A UK Boarding School Taster Programme

Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course

Set in a campus of nearly 240 acres of architecturally significant buildings and beautiful grounds, Charterhouse is one of the great British boarding schools. Established in London in 1611, the School has been on its current site for 150 years, offering an academically-focused yet all round education. With a focus on the values and skills that lead to academic achievement as well as success in the world beyond school, a successful education is an education for life.

Charterhouse became fully co-educational in September 2021, with girls and boys joining at Year 9 (age 13 years old). Currently, Charterhouse has 1,000 pupils from ages 13 – 18 years old.

Welcome to Charterhouse Young Learners

A Welcome from Academic Course Director, Chris Rose

We are very much looking forward to hosting young students at Charterhouse. This is a great opportunity for young students to experience two weeks of a typical British boarding school education, which will include a range of academic subjects plus exciting co-curricular activities.

Charterhouse is an idyllic and beautiful campus with outstanding facilities. Students will learn some of the history of England, its geographical features, conduct science investigations, and of course improve their

grasp of both language and literature. During the afternoons art, drama and sport are also catered for, and pupils will visit local historic sites, as well as some of the famous attractions in London.

Many of the teachers are experienced Prep School specialists who have worked on the Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course for a number of years and will ensure that students enjoy a stimulating, educational and inspirational stay, creating memories and making new friends.

Young Learners Summer Course

Introduction to the Course

We inspire learning and pupils are challenged to read outside the course syllabus.

The School’s core values are:

Beyond their academic, sporting and artistic endeavours, our focus is that students will feel secure and supported, comfortable, respected and safe in their environment.

Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course is an opportunity for young people to experience a UK boarding school environment, along with promoting learning in a fun, exciting and interactive way inside and outside the classroom. The boarding experience will bring about life skills, independence and help develop good manners.

The subjects covered during this course will be:

Geography | Science | History

Language and Literature | Art | Drama | Sport

Our four core subjects will cover:

Language and Literature Science

In our lessons we will be exploring the tales from Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Just So’ stories, and using our visit to Wisley Gardens and Marwell Zoo as the basis for our writing.

Geography

These lessons will involve the study of plants, trees and flowers around the Charterhouse site. Often this will mean outdoor activities, as well as practical work in the classroom.

History

We will be taking the children on a virtual geographical whistle-stop tour of the three countries that make up Great Britain, its cities and physical features. They will investigate landforms such as rivers, waterfalls, caves and arches – and learning how they were formed.

In this subject we will be studying 1066 and the Norman Conquest, together with the development of castles. In addition, we will look at the history of Charterhouse School, from its roots in London to its present-day location in Godalming.

Each participant who successfully completes Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course will receive a certificate issued by Charterhouse and a study report.

Young Learners Summer Course

A Typical Week...

During this course a number of excursions take place to encourage interactive learning outside of the classroom to further develop and enhance what has been learned during classroom lessons.

Boarding Life Summer Course Admission

The boarding house is the centre of life outside the classroom. Each house will have an experienced house parent and a team of house assistants who are there to provide pastoral care and support to pupils throughout the course. Each boarding house is single sex, accommodating either boys or girls. Rooms in boarding houses are a mix of single, twin and quad bedrooms, meaning some pupils will be sharing rooms.

It is extremely important to us to provide a healthy and balanced range of food that is both nutritious and enjoyable for pupils.

This is achieved in the following ways:

All our food is produced on site by our dedicated team of chefs. 90% of our dishes are made from fresh ingredients. Menus are rotated to provide a continuing variety. We cater for a wide variety of dietary requirements.

Pupils will be provided with a breakfast, lunch and dinner, along with refreshments between classes. On excursion days a packed lunch will be provided.

Dates: 16th July 2025 – 30th July 2025

Age: 8 – 12 years old

Capacity: 40 boys and 40 girls

UK domestic and International passport holders can attend the course. Charterhouse Young Learners Summer Course requires students to be of a minimum English language “medium level”, with all teaching, support and other activities conducted in English. It is, therefore, essential that all pupils demonstrate the appropriate level of proficiency in English at a compulsory spoken English of average to high (Level B1 – CERF). This is not an English language tuition course (EFL/ESL) but an average to high English language skill is required to successfully complete this course.
