2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

UT RANKED NO. 17 IN AVCA POLL The Lady Vols moved up two spots to No. 17 in the most recent version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division-I poll, following their perfect 3-0 performance at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Tennessee started the season with a national ranking for the first time since 2006, coming in at No. 19. The preseason ranking was the seventh in program history for the Lady Volunteers, who concluded the 2009 campaign rated as the 24th-best team in the nation after going 24-8 and reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

UT IMPRESSES AT COMCAST LADY VOL CLASSIC The 17th-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball team opened the 2010 campaign with a bang, sweeping through its competition at the 29th-annual Comcast Lady Vol Classic this past weekend at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. The Big Orange christened the season with a three-set triumph over Xavier on Friday night before downing Chattanooga the following morning. It then took out Virginia Tech Saturday evening to claim the tournament title. Senior Nikki Fowler claimed MVP honors at the competition for the second straight season, while fellow classmate Leah Hinkey and sophomore DeeDee Harrison joined her on the all-tournament team. Fowler, who also picked up Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades for her strong performances, led UT in both kills and digs for the weekend with totals of 35 and 30, respectively. She also averaged a tournament-best 3.89 kills per set in addition to hitting at a stellar .310 clip, tallying a squad-high five service aces, collecting four blocks and finishing as the team’s top passer, with a .974 reception percentage

UT TABBED AS SEC FAVORITE The University of Tennessee volleyball team has been selected to win the 2010 Southeastern Conference volleyball title in a preseason vote by the league’s 11 coaches. This marks the first time since 1994 that a team other than Florida has been voted to capture the title, snapping at least a 16-year run at the honors by the Gators. The Lady Vols received nine of the 11 firstplace votes for the league champion. The other two tallies both went to UF. Tennessee received 11 points to win the Eastern Division, followed by Florida with 21 points and Kentucky with 25. Georgia and South Carolina are picked to finish fourth and fifth in the division respectively. The Gators did receive

two first-place votes for overall champion. The defending SEC Champion LSU Tigers are predicted to win the Western Division for the third consecutive season with 13 firstplace votes. The Tigers posted an 18-2 league record and a 25-7 overall record. The Auburn Tigers have been selected to finish second with 19 points, and the Arkansas Razorbacks are predicted to place third with 25 points. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while the Alabama Crimson Tide rounds out the poll in sixth-place. Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

UT HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS

REPLACING THE BEST

Throughout the years, the University of Tennessee volleyball team has amassed a stellar 27-5 (.844) record in home openers, including a 3-0 triumph over Xavier on Aug. 27 this season. During the Rob Patrick era, the Lady Vols have been even better with an 13-1 (.929) mark in his 13 years at the helm. The lone loss during that span was to LSU on Sept. 21, 2001. This season marked just the fourth time in the past 20 years that the Big Orange has opened the season at home. Before starting off last season at home with a sweep of Tennessee Tech, the Big Orange last did it in 2006 when it welcomed Virginia, Centenary and Miami (Ohio) to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Prior to that, UT had not opened a campaign at home since it hosted Chattanooga on Sept. 6, 1991.

Tennessee faces the unenviable task of finding a replacement for the best defensive player in school history this season, following the graduation of all-time digs leader Chloe Goldman. An AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Libero of the Year and an All-SEC First Team member, Goldman shattered the Tennessee record for career digs, finishing with a total of 1,755 to break the previous record by 281 and place her fourth in the conference record book. She also finished her collegiate career with the top digs per set average in program history with 4.37 scoops per set during her four years at Rocky Top. The Monterey, Calif., native led the SEC in 2009 with 568 digs and 4.73 digs per set, becoming the first player to record three consecutive seasons with 500+ digs while donning the Orange and White. Goldman also holds the three highest single-season dig totals in school history with her 2009 tally ranking second behind only her 628 scoops in 2007.

L A DY V O L PA I R S E L E C T E D T O PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM Senior Nikki Fowler and junior Kayla Jeter both claimed spots on the preseason AllSoutheastern Conference team on Tuesday as the league announced the squad to launch the upcoming season. Fowler is the only player in the conference to have earned the preseason honor each season since its inception three years ago, while the award is the first for Jeter. The Lady Vols’ two selections tie Florida and Kentucky for the most in the league. The 10-player preseason All-SEC team was voted on by the league’s coaches and ties were not broken. The squad features five juniors, four seniors and one sophomore. Seven of the selections came from teams in the Eastern Division, while the Western Division had three players named.

FOWLER NAMED CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD Senior Nikki Fowler has been named one of 30 candidates for the first-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in volleyball. The honor will be given to the student-athlete with the most notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The Lady Volunteers will appear on ESPNU twice and on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) three times. Four of the five televised contests will air from the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, opening with a 2 p.m. showdown against perennially-ranked Florida at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19 on CSS. UT ended up with a 2009 season total of 11,185, shattering the previous mark of 9,565 set in 2005. It also set the record for average attendance with 772 fans coming through the turnstiles for each contest in Thompson-Boling Arena in 2009. LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its third year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. The Big Orange has brought with it the tradition of home-court dominance that it displayed in Stokely, where it amassed an impressive 98-34 (.742) record following a multi-million dollar renovation that was completed prior to the 1998 season. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 27-5 (.844) in home matches, including a perfect 3-0 record so far this season.

The 2010 Lady Vol roster boasts a pair of freshmen with strong athletic pedigrees as the fathers of both DeeDee Harrison and Kayla Jeter are former stars in the National Football League. Harrison’s father, former Vanderbilt star Dennis “Bigfoot” Harrison, spent 10 seasons as a defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. In addition, her brother, David Harrison, played four years as a center on the Indiana Pacers roster in the NBA. Her father earned a spot in the NFL Pro Bowl in 1981, while her brother was named to the All-Big XII First Team and earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American honors at Colorado in 2004. In all, Harrison has 11 siblings, including five brothers and six sisters. Meanwhile, Jeter’s father, Gary, was an AllAmerican defensive tackle for Southern California, a top-five draft pick and played in the NFL for 13 seasons with the New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. During the 1985 season with the Rams, he was a teammate of and played on the same defensive line as DeeDee’s father, Dennis.

ROB PATRICK NAMED AVCA PRESIDENT FOR 2010 University of Tennessee Head Coach Rob Patrick will serve as the president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the 2010 season. “It’s an honor to represent such a great group of people,” said Patrick. “I’m very excited about working with the AVCA and the current board because it is a dynamic and forward-thinking group. There are some exciting initiatives that will be decided over the next few years and the AVCA will have a huge voice in shaping the future of our sport.” “It is exciting to welcome Rob Patrick to the AVCA Board of Directors as President,” AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said. “His big picture perspective and excellent coaching pedigree will guarantee that the AVCA will continue to be guided by some of the best minds in our sport. Cody Hein, John Sample and Jodi Manore have all been consistent leaders and innovative contributors to our Board and we welcome them all for three more years.”

2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HEAD COACH ROB PATRICK Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 13 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in five of the last six years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in six of the last eight campaigns. Prior to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. When Tennessee volleyball coach Rob Patrick was a walk-on quarterback and captain of the volleyball team at Miami University, he was surrounded by a coaching tradition that has been a “huge influence on his career.” Long known as the “Cradle of Coaches” for its uncanny ability to produce high-caliber coaches, Miami served as training grounds for such greats as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown and Earl “Red” Blaik, in addition to the roughly one hundred Miami of Ohio graduates who currently coach at the collegiate or professional level. With six NCAA tournament appearances and an SEC title of his own, Patrick is already UT’s all-time wins leader with 267 in 14 years as head coach. Continuing Miami’s tradition of producing future generations of coaches, at least 15 Lady Vols players and assistants have gone on to coach after their time with Patrick.
