SCOUTING THE OPPONENT  Ole Miss • Ole Miss closed out the road portion of its regular season this past weekend with a pair of wins at Georgia and Auburn that improved the Rebels’ record to 19-8 on the season and 13-5 in SEC play. The wins also gave Ole Miss season sweeps of both foes after defeating the Bulldogs and Tigers in Oxford earlier in the season. With one more win, the Rebels will hit the 20-win mark for the second time under head coach Joe Getzin. The last time Ole Miss posted at least 20 wins was the 2007 season when the Rebels went 25-8 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Despite her season being over due to injury, junior middle blocker Regina Thomas continues to hold a spot as one of the top players in the nation by hitting percentage, holding down the fifth spot with a .421 hitting percentage for 2010. Thomas was also averaging 1.16 blocks per set on the season to lead the Rebels. Senior middle blocker Miranda Kitts has also been a solid force for the Rebels, putting down 14 kills and hitting .414 against the Auburn Tigers in the win. She is hitting .303 on the season and also averages more than a block a set. Junior libero Morgan Springer continues to lead the Rebels’ back row defense with a 4.62 dig per set average, putting her second in the SEC in the category as she has played a key role in Ole Miss’ success this season. The Rebels currently are tied for third in the overall standings with Tennessee and second in the SEC West with a bid for a third NCAA Tournament appearance in five years in site. It would be the third NCAA Tournament bid for Ole Miss in program history. SERIES HISTORY  Ole Miss • Tennessee currently holds a dominating 36-6 lead in the all-time series with Ole Miss, including a victory earlier this season in Knoxville. The Lady Vols made quick work of the Rebels in that contest, sweeping them, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, behind the strength of a .343 team hitting percentage. Nikki Fowler posted a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 12 digs, while Kayla Jeter just missed one of her own with a match-best 16 putaways and nine scoops. UP NEXT  Following its match against Ole Miss, Tennessee will close out the regular-season portion of its schedule with a 7 p.m. showdown against Kentucky at Memorial Coliseum in Lexington on Wednesday, Nov. 24. The Lady Vols will then await word as to their NCAA Tournament fate which will be announced between 3-3:30 p.m. on ESPNews on Sunday, Nov. 28.

2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HEAD COACH ROB PATRICK Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 13 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in five of the last six years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in six of the last eight campaigns. Prior to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

ROB PATRICK “Cradle of Coaches” When Tennessee volleyball coach Rob Patrick was a walk-on quarterback and captain of the volleyball team at Miami University, he was surrounded by a coaching tradition that has been a “huge influence on his career.” Long known as the “Cradle of Coaches” for its uncanny ability to produce high-caliber coaches, Miami served as training grounds for such greats as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown and Earl “Red” Blaik, in addition to the roughly one hundred Miami of Ohio graduates who currently coach at the collegiate or professional level. With six NCAA tournament appearances and an SEC title of his own, Patrick is already UT’s all-time wins leader with 289 in 14 years as head coach. Continuing Miami’s tradition of producing future generations of coaches, at least 15 Lady Vols players and assistants have gone on to coach after their time with Patrick.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its third year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. The Big Orange has brought with it the tradition of home-court dominance that it displayed in Stokely, where it amassed an impressive 98-34 (.742) record following a multi-million dollar renovation that was completed prior to the 1998 season. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 36-7 (.854) in home matches, including a near-perfect 12-2 record this season. The seventh version of the NCAA Division I Volleyball RPI of the 2010 campaign was released earlier this week and Tennessee continued to find itself in good position as it is ranked No. 16 in the nation. The NCAA RPI rankings take into account strength of schedule, as well as the team’s record both on the road and at home. Tennessee is one of six SEC teams currently ranked among the top-50 in the nation, behind only No. 1 Florida and 14th-rated LSU and ahead of No. 41 Ole Miss, No. 48 Auburn and No. 49 Kentucky. The Lady Vols have wins over No. 24 Florida State, 27th-ranked Oklahoma, No. 35 Virginia Tech, No. 41 Ole Miss, No. 46 Louisville, 48thranked Auburn and No. 49 Kentucky. Four of their five losses have come to top-ranked squads as well, as they have fallen to the No. 1 Gators and 14th-ranked LSU twice each, as well as to No. 19 Northwestern. Tennessee will learn its NCAA fate between 3 and 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28 when the NCAA Selection Show airs live on ESPNews.

SWEEPING AWAY THE COMPETITION

Tennessee has made a habit of making quick work of its opponents this season with a total of 16 sweeps, which marks the most by an SEC team. No. 1 Florida is second with 14. Twice this year the Lady Vols have gone on extended runs without dropping a frame,. They first opened the season with 20 straight set victories, finishing just one off the school record. UT also won 16 straight stanzas and 19 of 20 from Oct. 24-Nov. 12.

ATTACK OF THE LADY VOLS!

The Lady Vol offense has been extremely effective thus far this season. As a team, Tennessee ranks sixth in the nation with 14.71 kills per set, seventh with a .293 hitting percentage and 13th with 13.49 assists per set. It is also the top team in the SEC in all three of those categories. Leading the way is senior Nikki Fowler who ranks fourth in the conference with an average of 3.61 kills per set. Fifth-year senior Leah Hinkey, meanwhile, checks in at the sixth spot on the league’s hitting percentage chart with an attack average of .371, while Fowler sits just outside the 10th with a career-best .320 hitting percentage this year.

FOWLER TABBED TO ESPN/COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT FIRST TEAM

For the third straight season, University of Tennessee senior right side hitter Nikki Fowler has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District IV First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday. The Dallas, Texas, native will move on to the national ballot where she attempt to become the program’s second academic All-American in

five years. A marketing major with a collateral in international business, Fowler currently holds a sparkling cumulative GPA of 3.80 and is the first Lady Vol volleyball player to ever earn academic all-district honors three times in her career. The award gives the Lady Vols six players in as many seasons that have earned academic alldistrict honors. Fowler first accomplished the feat in 2008, just a year after Jena Berg earned secondteam laurels. In 2006, Kelsey Fautsch claimed a spot on the first team en route to third-team AllAmerica honors, while Kristen Andre was named to the second team in 2005.

LADY VOLS RAISE OVER $1,300 FOR SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE

For the third straight year, the University of Tennessee volleyball program partnered with the Knoxville affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to host a “Dig for the Cure” event designed to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer. This year, the Lady Vols helped to raise over $1,300 for breast cancer research when they took on Auburn on Friday, Oct. 29. Playing in front of 1,064 pink-clad fans at Thompson-Boling Arena, UT donned pink jerseys for the first time ever thanks to a generous donation by Comcast. The evening kicked off with a one-mile “Victory Walk” throughout the UT campus, beginning and ending at Thompson-Boling Arena. All walk participants received a free “Live Pink, Bleed Orange” bracelet that also provided free admission to the match. Anyone wearing pink will also be admitted into the match for free. During the contest against the Tigers, a silent auction was held on the concourse, featuring items such as game-worn jerseys, pink jerseys, mini volleyballs, football and basketball ticket packages, an autographed volleyball and a Susan G. Komen prize pack. “We are excited and proud to partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” UT Head Coach Rob Patrick said. “This is a very important part of what we do with the women’s athletic department at the University of Tennessee. We are proud that we are able to partner with them and help raise money to help them beat this dreaded disease. We are excited that so many people came out to be a part of not just a volleyball match, but an entire evening dedicated to breast cancer awareness.”

BIG ORANGE GOES ON THE OFFENSIVE

in its 3-o home sweep over Auburn on Oct. 29, Tennessee hit an amazing .423 as a team with 48 kills and a season-low seven errors on 97 swings, all while holding the Tigers to their lowest hitting percentage of the season at .082. The last time the Lady Vols posted such an impressive offensive performance came against Alabama on Nov. 11, 2005, when they hit .467 (567-105). UT’s previous high this season also came against Auburn when it notched a team hitting percentage of .421 on Sept. 26.

ROBINSON SHOWING VERSATILITY

One of the most highly touted recruits in UT history due to her wide-ranging skill set, freshman Kelsey Robinson has put that versatility on full display in her rookie campaign. The Bartlett, Ill., native opened the season as a starting outside hitter for the Lady Vols, recording 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

92 kills and 19 blocks through the first 14 matches. Following a minor ankle injury, however, the 6-2 rookie took control of the libero position. In her first five matches in that spot, she averaged a remarkable 5.22 digs per set, which represented a solid increase over the 3.20 digs per set the Lady Vols received from their liberos in the first 15 contests of the season.

FOWLER REACHES MILESTONE MARK

With a 20-kill, 15-dig effort against Louisville on Oct. 27, Nikki Fowler recorded the 50th doubledouble of her career. In those 50 matches Tennessee had a 3317 record. She notched 12 in her freshman year, seven her sophomore season, 19 during her junior campaign and has a team-high 12 so far this year. All but two of the double-double have been a combination of kills and digs. She tallied a killassist double-double against Notre Dame on Nov. 23, 2007 and picked up the only triple-double in school history (19 kills, 19 assists, 18 digs) at Ole Miss on Nov. 2 of that same year. The only Lady Vol with more double-doubles in the past decade is Julie Knytych who had 61 from 2002-05. (Special thanks to James Whitson of TennesseeVolleyball.net for help with the research for this note.)

FOWLER MAKES HISTORY (TAKE ONE)

Arguably the greatest all-around player in Tennessee history, senior Nikki Fowler became just the fourth player in program annals to hit the 1,000 mark in both kills and digs with nine scoops against Florida State on Sept. 4.

by Ariana Wilson from 1998-2001, and placing her eighth all-time in the SEC record book. She is the first player to take more than 4,000 career swings while wearing the Orange and White.

SEC STRONGER THAN EVER

With five teams having been ranked or receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll this season, the Southeastern Conference is as strong as it has ever been. In addition to No. 21 Tennessee, Florida is currently the top-ranked team in the nation and LSU comes in at No. 16. Kentucky has also been ranked for a number of weeks this season, and Ole Miss appeared in the receiving votes category on mulitiple occasions.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

For the first time since 1981, the Lady Vol volleyball roster features four players from the state of Tennessee in Nashville natives DeeDee Harrison and Ellen Mullins, Chattanooga product Jasmine Brown and Knoxville’s own Kylann Scheidt. The last time UT had four players from Tennessee was under Bob Bertucci 29 years ago when Pam McMahan, Beverly Garner, Kim Hackler and Pam Hackler all suited up for the Orange and White. In another roster oddity, this season also marks the first time since 1993 that the Big Orange does not have a player from the state of California.

HINKEY CLAIMS SEC HONORS

For the second time in her career, Lady Vol senior middle blocker Leah Hinkey was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25. She previously picked up the award in the opening 1,000-1,000 CLUB week of her sophomore campaign on Aug. 27, Name Kills Digs Years 2007. 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

UT IMPRESSES AT COMCAST LADY VOL CLASSIC

The Lady Vols opened the 2010 campaign with a bang, sweeping through their competition at the 29th-annual Comcast Lady Vol Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Aug. 27-28. The Big Orange christened the season with a three-set triumph over Xavier on Friday night before downing Chattanooga the following morning. It then took out Virginia Tech Saturday evening to claim the tournament title. Senior Nikki Fowler claimed MVP honors at the competition for the second straight season, while fellow classmate Leah Hinkey and sophomore DeeDee Harrison joined her on the all-tournament team. Fowler, who also picked up Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades for her strong performances, led UT in both kills and digs for the weekend with totals of 35 and 30, respectively. She also averaged a tournament-best 3.89 kills per set in addition to hitting at a stellar .310 clip, tallying a squad-high five service aces, collecting four blocks and finishing as the team’s top passer, with a .974 reception percentage

UT HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS

Throughout the years, the University of Tennessee volleyball team has amassed a stellar 27-5 (.844) record in home openers, including a 3-0 triumph over Xavier on Aug. 27 this season. During the Rob Patrick era, the Lady Vols have been even better with an 13-1 (.929) mark in his 13 years at the helm. The lone loss during that span was to LSU on Sept. 21, 2001. This season marked just the fourth time in the past 20 years that the Big Orange has opened the season at home. Before starting off last season at home with a sweep of Tennessee Tech, the Big Orange last did it in 2006 when it welcomed Virginia, Centenary and Miami (Ohio) to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Prior to that, UT had not opened a campaign at home since it hosted Chattanooga on Sept. 6, 1991.

LADY VOLS ON TV

The University of Tennessee volleyball team has been featured on national television a schoolrecord six times this season. The Lady Volunteers appeared on ESPNU twice, on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) three times and on Cox Sports (CST) once. Four of the six televised contests aired from the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. UT’s television opener came on Sunday, Sept. 19 against No. 3 Florida on CSS. The Orange and White made its next appearance on the air on Wednesday, Sept. 29, when it swept border-rival Kentucky on ESPNU. The first of two road matches that hit the airwaves took place in Fayetteville, Ark., on Fri., Oct. 8 when UT came from two sets down to squeak past a hard-fighting Arkansas squad on Cox Sports. The next was in Gainesville, Fla., when ESPNU broadcast the Big Orange taking on the top-ranked Gators in a mid-week showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 20 from the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The final two televised matches both aired on CSS from Knoxville. The first saw Tennessee cruise past Georgia on Sunday, Oct. 31. UT’s final TV contest featured a 3-0 sweep over Arkansas on Sunday, Nov. 14. The six television matches are the most in the league and break the previous program high of five set last season in the first year of the Southeastern Conference’s contract with ESPN. Tennessee has made 20 television appearances over the past seven seasons, posting a perfect 5-0 record on the tube last year. A total of 19 SEC volleyball matches will be broadcast this season in conjunction with ESPNU, FOX Sports Net (FSN), Cox Sports Television (CST) and CSS. That is one more than last year and is the most in conference history. All matches will be broadcast live. ESPNU reaches over 73 million homes, FSN reaches 25 million and CSS/CST reaches 10 million homes.

the Gators. The Lady Vols received nine of the 11 firstplace votes for the league champion. The other two tallies both went to UF. Tennessee received 11 points to win the Eastern Division, followed by Florida with 21 points and Kentucky with 25. Georgia and South Carolina are picked to finish fourth and fifth in the division respectively. The Gators did receive two first-place votes for overall champion. The defending SEC Champion LSU Tigers are predicted to win the Western Division for the third consecutive season with 13 firstplace votes. The Tigers posted an 18-2 league record and a 25-7 overall record. The Auburn Tigers have been selected to finish second with 19 points, and the Arkansas Razorbacks are predicted to place third with 25 points. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while the Alabama Crimson Tide rounds out the poll in sixth-place. Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

REPLACING THE BEST

Tennessee faces the unenviable task of finding a replacement for the best defensive player in school history this season, following the graduation of all-time digs leader Chloe Goldman. An AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Libero of the Year and an All-SEC First Team member, Goldman shattered the Tennessee record for career digs, finishing with a total of 1,755 to break the previous record by 281 and place her fourth in the conference record book. She also finished her collegiate career with the top digs per set average in program history with 4.37 scoops per set during her four years at Rocky Top. The Monterey, Calif., native led the SEC in 2009 with 568 digs and 4.73 digs per set, becoming the first player to record three consecutive seasons with 500+ digs while donning the Orange and White. Goldman also holds the three highest single-season dig totals in school history with her 2009 tally ranking second behind only her 628 scoops in 2007.

L A DY V O L PA I R S E L E C T E D T O PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM

Senior Nikki Fowler and junior Kayla Jeter both claimed spots on the preseason AllSoutheastern Conference team as the league announced the squad to launch the 2010 season. Fowler is the only player in the conference to have earned the preseason honor each season since its inception three years ago, while the award is the first for Jeter. The Lady Vols’ two selections tie Florida and Kentucky for the most in the league. The 10-player preseason All-SEC team was voted on by the league’s coaches and ties were not broken. The squad features five juniors, four seniors and one sophomore. Seven of the selections came from teams in the Eastern Page 8

Division, while the Western Division had three players named.

FOWLER NAMED CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD

““It seems like Tennessee always plays their best volleyball in the second half of the SEC, which I think is a testament to great coaching. They also have two of the premier offensive players in the league.” — Florida Head Coach Mary Wise

Although she did not make the final cut in early October, senior Nikki Fowler was named one of 30 candidates for the first-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in volleyball. The honor will be given to the student-athlete with the most notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

FOWLER BRINGS GOLD MEDAL EXPERIENCE BACK TO KNOXVILLE

While most college students were spending their summer breaks at home soaking in the sun, relaxing and enjoying their time off from school, Nikki Fowler was hard at work, helping the U.S. Women’s National A2 Blue Team capture a gold medal. Fowler, a native of Dallas, Texas, traveled with the USA A2 Blue squad to Phoenix, Ariz., from May 29-June 1, where it swept through its competition to claim the Open Division title at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. ROB PATRICK NAMED AVCA PRESIDENT

FOR 2010

University of Tennessee Head Coach Rob Patrick will serve as the president of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the 2010 season. “It’s an honor to represent such a great group of people,” said Patrick. “I’m very excited about working with the AVCA and the current board because it is a dynamic and forward-thinking group. There are some exciting initiatives that will be decided over the next few years and the AVCA will have a huge voice in shaping the future of our sport.” “It is exciting to welcome Rob Patrick to the AVCA Board of Directors as President,” AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said. “His big picture perspective and excellent coaching pedigree will guarantee that the AVCA will continue to be guided by some of the best minds in our sport. Cody Hein, John Sample and Jodi Manore have all been consistent leaders and innovative contributors to our Board and we welcome them all for three more years.”

LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

The 2010 Lady Vol roster boasts a pair of freshmen with strong athletic pedigrees as the fathers of both DeeDee Harrison and Kayla Jeter are former stars in the National Football League. Harrison’s father, former Vanderbilt star Dennis “Bigfoot” Harrison, spent 10 seasons as a defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los

“Our fans got to see one of the premier players not only in the league, but also in the country. Nikki Fowler is a terrific talent and obviously gave us fits as she has for her entire career. When a player is that good and she starts from her freshman year, by their senior year they are just so difficult to defend. “ — Florida Head Coach Mary Wise “(Tennessee’s defense) is definitely frustrating especially as a hitter. You think you’re hitting these really great shots and then they keep bringing the ball back.” — Florida junior Kelly Murphy “At Tennessee, we just ran into a buzzsaw. They played absolutely phenomenally well on all cylinders. In my opinion, they are still the best team in the conference...We hit them on the wrong night.” — Auburn Head Coach Wade Benson “Tennessee is a very good team with a lot of options. They are a little different to scheme for because of where their setters and opposites play. I think that gave us a little trouble...We just couldn’t get them slowed down and it seemed to effect our spirit.” — South Carolina Head Coach Ben Somera “We knew Tennessee would be tough...They remind me of our team last year where we had most of the team returning.” — Florida State Head Coach Chris Poole “Tennessee poses a very difficult matchup for any team in our conference. They have four players at the pins that can put the ball away.” - Alabama Head Coach Judy Green Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. In addition, her brother, David Harrison, played four years as a center on the Indiana Pacers roster in the NBA. Her father earned a spot in the NFL Pro Bowl in 1981, while her brother was named to the All-Big XII First Team and earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American honors at Colorado in 2004. In all, Harrison has 11 siblings, including five brothers and six sisters. Meanwhile, Jeter’s father, Gary, was an AllAmerican defensive tackle for Southern California, a top-five draft pick and played in the NFL for 13 seasons with the New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. During the 1985 season with the Rams, he was a teammate of and played on the same defensive line as DeeDee’s father, Dennis. 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes
