THIS WEEK’S OPPONENTS Georgia (8-5, 0-2 SEC) Sept. 24 • 7 p.m. • Athens, Ga. Ramsey Student Center

Auburn (10-4, 1-1 SEC) Sept. 26 • 1:30 p.m. CT • Auburn, Ala. Student Activities Center

ABOUT THE WEEK BROADCAST INFORMATION  Friday: GameTracker: UTLadyVols.com or GeorgiaDogs.com  Sunday: GameTracker: UTLadyVols.com or AuburnTigers.com ABOUT THE OPPONENTS  Georgia • The Georgia Bulldogs moved to 8-5 on the year after going 1-2 over a three-match road swing last week. Georgia opened the road trip with a 3-2 victory over Georgia State in Atlanta before traveling to Fayetteville to open league play against Arkansas. The Razorbacks won that match 3-2, which marked the third straight five-set match the Bulldogs played in including a fiveset lost to Georgia Tech at the end of the Bulldog Invitational on Sept. 11. It marked the first time in the rally-scoring era that the Bulldogs have played three-straight five set contests, and the last time the UGA program was involved in three five-set matches in a row was 1994.  Auburn • The Auburn volleyball team opened Southeastern Conference competition on the road last weekend as the Tigers traveled to LSU on Friday and Arkansas on Sunday. Auburn opened its match against LSU with a 25-22 first-set victory, but couldn’t hold on as LSU finished out the match with wins in the second, third and fourth sets. Sophomore Sarah Bullock tallied 14 kills and 12 digs, while Liz Crouch had a season-best 26 digs on the night. On Sunday, Auburn turned it around as the Tigers outlasted Arkansas and took the 3-2 victory. Senior Morgan Johns finished with 17 kills and had a .429 attack percentage, while Bullock recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Auburn now stands at 10-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. SERIES HISTORY  Georgia • Tennessee has an all-time record of 38-23 against Georgia, including wins in 13 of the last 14 matches between the two squads. Last season, the Lady Vols swept the Bulldogs at home, 2511, 25-15, 25-17, before outlasting them in five frames on the road in Athens, 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10.  Auburn • The Big Orange holds a commanding 24-13-1 advantage over Auburn, but has had a tough time putting them away on the road the last few seasons. Although UT has won 16 of the last 18 matches against the Tigers, both losses have come on the road in the last three seasons, including a tough, five-set defeat last year, in a match it led two sets to none. UP NEXT  The Lady Vols will return to Rocky Top next week for a Wednesday night showdown against No. 24 Kentucky at 8 p.m. on ESPNU. They will then host Ole Miss at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.

QUICK NOTES  Tennessee ranks No. 6 in the Rich Kern Percentage Index  Senior Nikki Fowler needs six more kills to move into seventh all-time at Tennessee She is also just 67 swings away from taking possession of the top spot on the career attacks chart   As a team, UT ranks 13th in the nation in kills per set and 15th in hitting percentage  Tennessee ranks first in the SEC in hitting percentage and kills per set  Four different Lady Vols rank among the top-12 in the SEC in hitting percentage  Leah Hinkey and Nikki Fowler rank fourth in the SEC in blocks and kills per set, respectively  The Lady Vols have four Tennessee natives on the roster for the first time since 1981 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE HEAD COACH ROB PATRICK Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 13 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in five of the last six years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in six of the last eight campaigns. Prior to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

When Tennessee volleyball coach Rob Patrick was a walk-on quarterback and captain of the volleyball team at Miami University, he was surrounded by a coaching tradition that has been a “huge influence on his career.” Long known as the “Cradle of Coaches” for its uncanny ability to produce high-caliber coaches, Miami served as training grounds for such greats as Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown and Earl “Red” Blaik, in addition to the roughly one hundred Miami of Ohio graduates who currently coach at the collegiate or professional level. With six NCAA tournament appearances and an SEC title of his own, Patrick is already UT’s all-time wins leader with 276 in 14 years as head coach. Continuing Miami’s tradition of producing future generations of coaches, at least 15 Lady Vols players and assistants have gone on to coach after their time with Patrick.

TENNESSEE NO. 6 IN RKPI

Although the NCAA has yet to release the first official RPI of the season, Tennessee would likely be very pleased if it did. In the Rich Kern Percentage Index, a computer-generated ranking system on RichKern.com designed to simulate the NCAA’s RPI, the Lady Vols currently rank No. 6 in the nation behind only Florida, Nebraska, Hawaii, Northern Iowa and Iowa State. Much of UT’s high ranking has to do with the quality of opposition it has faced so far this year. Including the top-ranked Gators, the Big Orange has already taken on No. 10 Florida State, 13th-rated Oklahoma, No. 14 Northwestern and 17th-ranked Virginia Tech. For Florida State (9-1) and Virginia Tech (10-1), Tennessee is the only team that has defeated them to this point in the season.

ATTACK OF THE LADY VOLS!

The Lady Vol offense has been extremely effective thus far this season, as it leads the SEC in two major offensive categories. As a team, Tennessee is hitting nine points higher than any other team in the league at an impressive .283 clip. It is also averaging a tenth of a kill more per set with 14.30 putaways per frame. Leading the way is senior Nikki Fowler who ranks fourth in the SEC with 3.50 kills per set. Fellow senior Leah Hinkey and sophomore DeeDee Harrison, meanwhile, check in at the eighth and ninth spots on the league’s hitting percentage chart withattack averages of .331 and .329, respectively.

KEEPING IT LOCAL

For the first time since 1981, the Lady Vol volleyball roster features four players from the state of Tennessee in Nashville natives DeeDee Harrison and Ellen Mullins, Chattanooga product Jasmine Brown and Knoxville’s own Kylann Scheidt. The last time UT had four players from Tennessee was under Bob Bertucci 29 years ago when Pam McMahan, Beverly Garner, Kim Hackler and Pam Hackler all suited up for the Orange and White. In another roster oddity, this season also marks the first time since 1993 that the Big Orange does not have a player from the state of California.

three years alone, including an unprecedented three straight during one stetch in 2009. She has now won four of the past six awards handed out by the SEC dating back to last season.

SEC STRONGER THAN EVER

With four teams currently among the top 25 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, the Southeastern Conference is as strong as it has ever been. In addition to No. 20 Tennessee, Florida is ranked third and LSU and Kentucky come in at 17 and 24, respectively. All four teams also participated in the NCAA Tournament last year with each squad hosting the first and second rounds.

OHIO NATIVES THRIVE IN RETURN HOME TO BAYMONT INN & SUITES INVITE

The University of Tennessee volleyball team wrapped up the tournament portion of its schedule last weekend with a pair of hard-fought wins at the Baymont Inn and Suites Invitational, hosted by Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Junior Kayla Jeter and sophomore Leslie Cikra, both Ohio natives, were named to the alltournament team. In the team’s three matches, Jeter tallied 32 kills while hitting at a sparkling .313 clip with just six miscues in 93 swings. She also had nine digs, six blocks and a pair of assists. Cikra, meanwhile, had 30 kills, in addition to seven blocks.

LADY VOLS STAY PERFECT AT HOUSTON INVITATIONAL

Arguably the greatest all-around player in Tennessee history, senior Nikki Fowler become just the fourth player in program annals to hit the 1,000 mark in both kills and digs with nine scoops against Florida State on Sept. 4.

The Big Orange traveled to the Lone Star State where it took out Big 12-foe Oklahoma, then-No. 13 Florida State and host Houston in impressive fashion, Sept. 3-4. Senior Nik k i Fowler was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player for the second straight weekend and was joined by sophomore Leslie Cikra and freshman Kelsey Robinson on the all-tournament team. Fowler led UT with 39 kills on the weekend, while hitting .348 and averaging 4.33 kills, 2.78 digs and 0.56 blocks per set. Robinson recorded 26 kills and had a squad-best 30 digs, while Cikra pounded out 22 putaways and hit .364 with five blocks.

Fowler, who also picked up Lady Vol Athlete of the Week accolades for her strong performances, led UT in both kills and digs for the weekend with totals of 35 and 30, respectively. She also averaged a tournament-best 3.89 kills per set in addition to hitting at a stellar .310 clip, tallying a squad-high five service aces, collecting four blocks and finishing as the team’s top passer, with a .974 reception percentage

UT TABBED AS SEC FAVORITE

The University of Tennessee volleyball team has been selected to win the 2010 Southeastern Conference volleyball title in a preseason vote by the league’s 11 coaches. This marks the first time since 1994 that a team other than Florida has been voted to capture the title, snapping at least a 16-year run at the honors by the Gators. The Lady Vols received nine of the 11 firstplace votes for the league champion. The other two tallies both went to UF. Tennessee received 11 points to win the Eastern Division, followed by Florida with 21 points and Kentucky with 25. Georgia and South Carolina are picked to finish fourth and fifth in the division respectively. The Gators did receive two first-place votes for overall champion. The defending SEC Champion LSU Tigers are predicted to win the Western Division for the third consecutive season with 13 firstplace votes. The Tigers posted an 18-2 league record and a 25-7 overall record. The Auburn Tigers have been selected to finish second with 19 points, and the Arkansas Razorbacks are predicted to place third with 25 points. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while the Alabama Crimson Tide rounds out the poll in sixth-place. Points were compiled on a 1-2-3-4-5-6 basis for the Western Division and 1-2-3-4-5 for the Eastern Division. Each coach is not allowed to vote for his or her own team and each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

UT HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS

Throughout the years, the University of Tennessee volleyball team has amassed a stellar 27-5 (.844) record in home openers, including a 3-0 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

triumph over Xavier on Aug. 27 this season. During the Rob Patrick era, the Lady Vols have been even better with an 13-1 (.929) mark in his 13 years at the helm. The lone loss during that span was to LSU on Sept. 21, 2001. This season marked just the fourth time in the past 20 years that the Big Orange has opened the season at home. Before starting off last season at home with a sweep of Tennessee Tech, the Big Orange last did it in 2006 when it welcomed Virginia, Centenary and Miami (Ohio) to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic. Prior to that, UT had not opened a campaign at home since it hosted Chattanooga on Sept. 6, 1991.

LADY VOL PAIR SELECTED TO PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM

Senior Nikki Fowler and junior Kayla Jeter both claimed spots on the preseason All-Southeastern Conference team as the league announced the squad to launch the 2010 season. Fowler is the only player in the conference to have earned the preseason honor each season since its inception three years ago, while the award is the first for Jeter. The Lady Vols’ two selections tie Florida and Kentucky for the most in the league. The 10-player preseason All-SEC team was voted on by the league’s coaches and ties were not broken. The squad features five juniors, four seniors and one sophomore. Seven of the selections came from teams in the Eastern Division, while the Western Division had three players named.

REPLACING THE BEST

Tennessee faces the unenviable task of finding a replacement for the best defensive player in school history this season, following the graduation of all-time digs leader Chloe Goldman. An AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, the 2009 Southeastern Conference Libero of the Year and an All-SEC First Team member, Goldman shattered the Tennessee record for career digs, finishing with a total of 1,755 to break the previous record by 281 and place her fourth in the conference record book. She also finished her collegiate career with the top digs per set average in program history with 4.37 scoops per set during her four years at Rocky Top. The Monterey, Calif., native led the SEC in 2009 with 568 digs and 4.73 digs per set, becoming the first player to record three consecutive seasons with 500+ digs while donning the Orange and White. Goldman also holds the three highest single-season dig totals in school history with her 2009 tally ranking second behind only her 628 scoops in 2007.

FOWLER NAMED CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SENIOR CLASS AWARD

Senior Nikki Fowler has been named one of 30 candidates for the first-ever Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in volleyball. The honor will be given to the student-athlete with the most notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. The candidate class will be narrowed 2010 Tennessee Lady Vol Volleyball Match Notes

to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

FOWLER BRINGS GOLD MEDAL EXPERIENCE BACK TO KNOXVILLE

While most college students were spending their summer breaks at home soaking in the sun, relaxing and enjoying their time off from school, Nikki Fowler was hard at work, helping the U.S. Women’s National A2 Blue Team capture a gold medal. Fowler, a native of Dallas, Texas, traveled with the USA A2 Blue squad to Phoenix, Ariz., from May 29-June 1, where it swept through its competition to claim the Open Division title at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

LADY VOLS ON TV

The University of Tennessee volleyball team will be featured on national television a schoolrecord six times. The Lady Volunteers will appear on ESPNU twice, on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) three times and on COX Sports (CST) once. Four of the six televised contests will air from the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville. UT’s television opener came on Sunday, Sept. 19 against No. 3 Florida on CSS. The Orange and White will next be on air when it makes its ESPNU debut, hosting border-rival Kentucky at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The first of two road matches that will hit the airwaves will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., on Fri., Oct. 8 when UT plays Arkansas on CST at 7 p.m. CT. The next will occur in Gainesville, Fla., when ESPNU will broadcast the Big Orange taking on the Gators in a mid-week showdown on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. from the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The final two televised matches will both air on CSS as Tennessee will welcome Georgia and Arkansas to Rocky Top for 2 p.m. showdowns on Sunday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 14, respectively. The six television matches are the most in the league and break the previous program high of five set last season in the first year of the Southeastern Conference’s contract with ESPN. Tennessee has made 20 television appearances over the past seven seasons, posting a perfect 5-0 record on the tube last year. A total of 19 SEC volleyball matches will be broadcast this season in conjunction with ESPNU, FOX Sports Net (FSN), Cox Sports Television (CST) and CSS. That is one more than last year and is the most in conference history. All matches will be broadcast live. ESPNU reaches over 73 million homes, FSN reaches 25 million and CSS/CST reaches 10 million homes.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its third year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. The Big Orange has brought with it the tradition of home-court dominance that it displayed in Stokely, where it amassed an impressive 98-34 (.742) record following a multi-million dollar renovation that was

With an average attendance of 1,058 so far this season and nine home dates remaining, the Lady Vols are on pace to demolish last year’s record. If fans continue to come to TBA at their current rate, UT would have a total attendance of 14,814 for the 2010 campaign.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER

The 2010 Lady Vol roster boasts a pair of freshmen with strong athletic pedigrees as the fathers of both DeeDee Harrison and Kayla Jeter are former stars in the National Football League. Harrison’s father, former Vanderbilt star Dennis “Bigfoot” Harrison, spent 10 seasons as a defensive end with the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers and Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. In addition, her brother, David Harrison, played four years as a center on the Indiana Pacers roster in the NBA. Her father earned a spot in the NFL Pro Bowl in 1981, while her brother was named to the All-Big XII First Team and earned Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American honors at Colorado in 2004. In all, Harrison has 11 siblings, including five brothers and six sisters. Meanwhile, Jeter’s father, Gary, was an AllAmerican defensive tackle for Southern California, a top-five draft pick and played in the NFL for 13 seasons with the New York Giants, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. During the 1985 season with the Rams, he was a teammate of and played on the same defensive line as DeeDee’s father, Dennis.
