laiming to be acting under the emergency decree, a sergeant allegedly lured two nine-year-old girls into a washroom where they were sexually abused last Wednesday. The alleged crime took place at Royal Thai Army Aviation facilities in Lop Buri, where the girls – one of them the daughter of a foreign pilot – were using the swimming pool. Sergeant Jeerasak Somsuk, 34, is said to have approached the girls while they were playing in the pool, told them to go to a washroom and remove their clothes, then performed an act of oral sex on them.

It is alleged that Jeerasak planned to take the girls out of the military facilities and was fetching his car when the foreign pilot discovered his daughter and her friend’s whereabouts. Jeerasak was arrested in the process of packing his clothes. He has been charged with sexually violating minors under the age of 13. Police say that three years ago, Jeerasak was accused of raping a woman, but the case was settled out of court. He was also found guilty of seriously injuring a victim during a robbery. The military has placed him on probation.

olice have sought the opinion of TV game show winners to identify the vehicles used in the attempted assassination of media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul last week. Prajuab Bunkhoon and a man who prefers to remain anonymous used their knowledge of cars to become champions on the “Genuine Fan” show in 2007. They identified vehicles used in an April 14 grenade attack on the Constitution Court during a red-shirt rally and in the attack on Sondhi as black Toyota Vigo pickup trucks – but not identical models as had previously been thought, said Bangkok police chief Worraphong Chewpreecha yesterday.

P

Worraphong dismissed a theory that the murder attempt was planned with the help of police or other authorities, following news reports that all five security cameras at the scene on Samsen Road were broken the day before the April 17 shooting of Sondhi. He said it was not unusual for the cameras, operated by traffic police and the Phra Nakhon district office, to malfunction.

Cameras targeted? Worraphong said that two cameras that could have recorded footage were damaged by bullets – possibly shot at by gunmen seconds before they launched the attack. The other three cameras had been broken

for a while. “District officials monitor the footage they get – they don’t always check whether cameras are working,” he added. Deputy police chief PolGeneral Thanee Somboonsab, head investigator in the case, said police had made good progress in solving the case but need to gather more evidence before identifying the masterminds behind the murder plot. Investigations are ongoing into whether Sondhi’s attackers were the same people responsible for the grenade attack on the Constitution Court. Forensic experts are due to complete their examination of Sondhi’s bullet-riddled Toyota van next week. Meanwhile, Chulalongkorn Hospital director Dr Adisorn Phattharadool said Sondhi might be allowed home on Friday, while his driver, Adul Saengpradab, is recovering well from brain injuries.

Bangkok streets will soon be monitored by 10,000 more closed-circuit TV cameras, adding to the 3,000 already installed, City Clerk Phongsak Semsant said yesterday. Seven-hundred will be used for security reasons while the rest will monitor traffic. The time footage will be stored for has been extended from seven to 30 days. Owners of hotels, shopping malls and petrol stations will be asked to link their internal CCTV systems with those operated by police and authorities, to ensure greater effectiveness in monitoring crimes. Responding to the lack of security-camera footage of the attempted assassination of ASTV-Manager Daily founder Sondhi Limthongkul on April 17, Phongsak said cameras in the area had been broken. City Hall’s policy is that repairmen fix cameras within three days of them being reported broken, he added.

Anti-riot volunteers Defence volunteers will soon be authorised to handle crowd control in case of future riots. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are setting up a new company of “municipal policemen”, the first 200 of whom along with 100 defence volunteers will soon receive military training from First Army Area troops, City Clerk Phongsak Semsant said yesterday. Their priority will be to protect BMA property and assist police and soldiers when called upon.

THE WORLD Father: I didn’t try to sell child star

he father of “Slumdog Millionaire” child actress Rubina Ali has denied trying to sell his daughter, after a British newspaper claimed he was willing to put her up for adoption at a price. Indian media said yesterday that Rafiq Qureshi described the News of the World report on Sunday as lies, although he accepted meeting a “Middle Eastern” man who approached them with an offer for the nine-year-old. The man, posing as a wealthy Arab sheikh, was in fact a reporter at the weekly tabloid. The tactic has been employed successfully in the past in sting operations against the rich and famous in Britain. “They kept saying we will give you a lot of benefits and it will be good for your daughter, but I declined,” Qureshi was quoted as telling reporters. “The reports that I wanted to sell Rubina are false.” Rubina, who played the young Latika in the hit film and still lives in Mumbai’s teeming slums, was also quoted as saying: “I want to remain with [my father].” The News of the World claimed Qureshi demanded

He allegedly complained that the family had not made any money out of the film, which won eight Oscars in February, including the coveted best picture. Rubina’s mother Kursheed, who is separated from Qureshi, has now filed a complaint against him with police and claims she heard about his intention from their eldest daughter about two weeks ago, according to Indian media. “I did not believe he would actually agree to it,” she was quoted as saying.

Photographer disputes Madonna story A photographer who says he captured images of Madonna after she fell off a horse in the Hamptons over the weekend disputes the singer’s account of how the accident happened. Madonna’s spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg says the singer took the tumble on Saturday when her horse was spooked by paparazzi. The singer, who recently turned 50, suffered “minor injuries” and bruises, Rosenberg said. Photographer Thomas Hinton told Newsday for its online editions that “the only photographer present” when the “Material Girl” fell was Steven Klein, her host in the Hamptons, a playground for the rich and famous on the eastern end of Long Island. Hinton said he received a tip-off that Madonna was in the Hamptons and photographed her from a public road before and after the accident. He said he wasn’t there when she fell. The accident was the latest setback for Madonna. Earlier this month a judge in Malawi denied her request to adopt a three-year-old girl from the country. Madonna has said she will appeal the ruling. – A P

US surgeon on trial in Aust for manslaughter US doctor Jayant Patel was committed to stand trial in Australia for the deaths of three of his patients in a Queensland hospital in what police allege was bungled surgery. The manslaughter charges stem from Indian-born Patel’s time as director of surgery at Bundaberg Base Hospital between 2003 and 2005. Patel, 59, was extradited from Portland, Oregon, to face the charges. He was hired by Australian health authorities even though a simple Internet search would have shown that he had been cited for negligence in Oregon and New York state. Lurid tales that portrayed him as a monster led to a backlash against overseastrained doctors in Australia. Patel’s lawyers argued that media reports branding him “Dr Death” had jeopardised his chances of receiving a fair trial. D PA

Great Wall far longer than thought

Archaeologists locate Cleopatra’s tomb A F P , Burg El-Arab, Egypt

A

rchaeologists revealed a rocky hilltop in northern Egypt on Sunday where they believe Cleopatra was buried 2,000 years ago by the side of her Roman lover Mark Anthony after she committed suicide with a self-inflicted asp bite. The team, led by antiquities chief Zahi Hawass and Kathleen Martinez, an Egyptologist from the Dominican Republic, hopes that the site around the ancient temple of Taposiris Magna, erected to honour the Egyptian god Isis in 300 BC, will soon reveal the legendary lovers’ final resting place. The team has worked there for three years – the latest in a chain of digs since an expedition by Napoleon in the 19th century. Martinez says that the find of a carved male head, a fragment of a mask with a cleft-chin, coins and other artifacts prove that this is Anthony’s burial site. And she is convinced that

The alabaster head, right, of a Queen Cleopatra statue and a part of a mask believed to belong to Mark Anthony were found at the temple of Taposiris Magna, west of Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday. Archaeologists will begin excavating three sites that are expected to contain the tombs of doomed lovers Anthony and Cleopatra. Cleopatra’s body also lies somewhere on this rocky outcrop overlooking the Mediterranean, 50 kilometres east of Alexandria. “There are historic proofs in the works of [Roman chronicler] Plutarch where he says

Cleopatra was buried with Mark Anthony,” Martinez said. Martinez said that trying to unravel the fate of the lovers began as a hobby but has now become what Hawass said could be “one of the most important discoveries of the 21st century”.

The most comprehensive and technologically advanced survey of China’s Great Wall has discovered the ancient monument is much longer than previously estimated. However the project has also shown the World Heritage-listed site is in danger of disappearing in many places due to road construction and other forms of development, as well as extreme weather, the China Daily said. The wall, built over centuries to keep foreigners out of China, stretches for 8,851.8 kilometres, much further than common estimates of 5,000 kilometres, according to the findings of the survey. The defensive structure includes 6,259.6 kilometres of actual wall, plus 359.7 kilometres of trenches and 2,232.5 kilometres of natural barriers such as hills and rivers. The two-year mapping project involved using global positioning systems and infra-red technology. AFP

She was here to introduce Fox clothes from her homeland, Israel. So when Daily Xpress asked the 24-year-old about the controversy over her failure to serve as required in the Israeli Defence Force, she was a bit flummoxed. “I really wanted to serve in the IDF, but I don’t regret not enlisting, because it paid off big-time,” Refaeli had told the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth. “Why is it good to die for our country? Isn’t it better to live in New York City?” The statement was a bombshell in a country where military service is mandatory for everyone over 18, and it turned toxic amid reports that Refaeli had dodged the army by marrying a family acquaintance and divorcing him soon after.

FIVE PHOTOS

A solid base Five steps for avoiding that mismatched foundation line between face and neck By Melissa Magsaysay LOS ANGELES TIMES

Y

ou can have impeccably long eyelashes, perfectly shaded cheekbones and pink, pouty lips, but if your base colour is a mismatch in shade and application, the rest won’t shine the way it’s supposed to. “Most people’s biggest mistake is that they try and pick a colour that’s the opposite tone

of their skin," says Tim Quinn, artistic director of Armani Beauty and a foundation pro. When choosing a foundation, whether at the department store or drugstore, skip the old dot-on-the-edge-ofthe-hand trick and try the colour right at your jaw line and blend in. Look at it in a full-length mirror, not a handheld, it’s a more accurate perspective.”

1

Here, Quinn offers his tips for doing it at home.

3

Step 1 Dab a lightweight eye cream under the eye and on the brow bone to hydrate the area, then apply a daily moisturiser over the rest of the face.

Step 2 Use a pearl-sized drop of foundation primer and smooth it all over the face.

Step 3 Using a brush with synthetic hair, apply colour-correcting concealer to the deepest part of the eye. Use under-eye concealer on the outer eye and lids. Blend it all in with the brush.

Step 4 Put a drop of foundation on the edge of your palm and apply with a natural-hair

brush, starting from the centre of the cheek, brushing in short, quick strokes, By the time you reach the jaw area, there should be little makeup left. Next, define the cheek and brow bone by dabbing a tiny bit of highlighter on the top of cheekbones and brow bone and blending in.

4

Step 5: Sweep a loose powder with the same luminous sheen as the foundation – nothing too matte or heavy – onto the face. The result isn't drastic, and the look is anything but severe. It’s luminous, flawless – and free of a telling line at the jaw.

Smooth operator Your fingers will fly as you flick through the media on the Samsung S8300 By Smiley Byte D A I LY X P R E S S

I

f you’re looking for an elegant phone that offers both touch technology and a keypad, the new Samsung Ultra Touch S8300 is for you. This fun multimedia phone, which also features an eightmegapixel camera, comes with a 2.8-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) screen with 240 x 400 pixel resolution, which is very bright and excellent for viewing photos and videos.

The S8300 supports all the popular video formats – Divx, Xvid, MPEG4, H.263, H264 and WMV – as well as a microSD card of up to 16 gigabytes on top of its internal 80-megabyte memory. That means you can store full-length features and watch them on the phone when you have time to spare. For the touch-screen feature, the S8300 uses the intuitive Touchwiz UI interface and thoughtfully provides a lock that prevents you from accidentally activating functions of the phone when you touch the screen. We checked out the camera and were impressed by the quality of the pictures. It comes with a built-in GPS that works with Google Maps. And you can activate the geotagging feature when taking photos so the phone will automatically record the locations of your captured scenes.

The S8300 comes in black with a choice of red or blue back. We preferred the red, finding it more elegant, but that’s a matter of personal taste. Our only gripe was the lack of a wireless network feature but of course that won’t be necessary once 3G services are available here. The phone supports 3-G UMTS Dual Band of 900 and 1,200 MHz. The Samsung Ultra Touch S8300 is in stores now for Bt18,900.

KEY SPECS Band: Quad-Band (850, 900, 1,800, 1,900), Network & Data: HSDPA (7.2Mbps), EDGE, GPRS Class 12, UMTS Battery: Standard Talk time up to three hours; Standby up to 200 hours Memory: Internal Memory of 80MB, expandable with MicroSD up to 16GB Camera mode: Face Detection, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR),

ith its cheap price and great music quality, you might as well use the Nokia 5130 Xpress Music as your MP3 player that also happens to function as a mobile phone. The 5130 retails for a mere Bt4,240 and that includes the 1gigabyte microSD card.

KEY SPECS System: Quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 Display: 2.0" 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA) displaying up to 256k colours Memory: 30 MB internal dynamic memory, expandable with

microSD card up to 2GB Battery: BL-5C 1020 mAh Li-Ion standard battery with about 6 hours talk time Camera: 2 megapixel Music playback file formats: mp3 AAC, eAAC, eAAC+, MP3, Midi, WMA, WAMR, MXMF Dimensions: 107.5 x 46.7 x 14.8 mm Weight: 88 g (with battery)

That’s a handy option to have, as the Nokia 5130 supports the eAAC+ advanced audio format, which can compress digital audio files at very high ratio, so you’ll be able to store more than 600 songs on your 1-gb card. And the phone comes with dedicated music buttons making it easy to access its music function, and also features an FM tuner, so you won’t miss your favourite shows. You can enhance the quality by using good headphones – just plug them into the standard stereo headphone jack. Best of all, it can be used with an optional Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH504. If you need to phone, you’ll find the voice quality loud and clear. The Nokia 5310 has

GPRS and EDGE connection for connecting to Internet and it supports Flash and Windows Live so you can use it to chat and check mails on the go as well. It comes with Opera mini browser and Nokia Mobile Search. Nokia 5130 Xpress Music is available in red and blue.

Liverpool’s Gillett seeks co-investor

Jagielka jittery about penalty

Liverpool co-owner George Gillett is seeking a junior partner to help refinance loans of £350 million used to secure the club, the Daily Telegraph reports. Gillett has held talks with several groups over joining his holding company. Gillett said selling the team was a last resort. The Telegraph says there has been “little interest” in Gillett’s proposal. – Bloomberg

Phil Jagielka, who scored the match-winning penalty to take Everton to the FA Cup final, said he didn’t want to take the spot kick, the Daily Mirror reports. “I wasn’t exactly at the head of the queue saying: pick me, pick me,” Jagielka is quoted as saying. “It was a hell of a long way Phil Jagielka from the halfway line to the penalty spot.” – Bloomberg

Yankees benefit from video review Umpires used the first video review of the season to rule that pinch-hitter Jorge Posada’s drive to right field was a home run in the Yankees’ 7-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Posada was batting for Jose Molina when he sent a fly to right off Jensen Lewis with one out in the seventh inning. Trevor Crowe leaped at the wall, but the ball was deflected by a fan and bounced off the top and then off Crowe’s glove before falling into play. “I was hoping the ball would carry the way it’s been carrying,” said Posada, who ended up with the 20th homer in the first four games at the new Yankee Stadium. “I didn’t think it was gone, though.” – AP

Safina is the new queen of tennis Dinara Safina made tennis history for herself and her family when she officially climbed to the world number one position in the women’s rankings on Monday. Safina, 22, is at the top for the first time. Her brother Marat Safin led the men’s rankings for nine weeks in 2000, making them the first brother-sister act to be number one in the singles rankings. “I didn’t know about that until recently. I was told that we are the first family. That is a huge honour, and I am proud of my brother, he has achieved everything in tennis,” Safina said.

Brian Gay broke the Verizon Heritage scoring mark on Sunday, winning by a record 10 strokes to earn his second PGA Tour title. Gay shot a 64 and his total of 20-under 264 bettered by one Loren Roberts’ winning score at Harbour Town Golf Links in 1996. His margin surpassed the previous best of seven strokes set by five-time champion Davis Love III in 1998. “I didn’t want to watch the board,” Gay said. – AP

Rafael Nadal gets his teeth into the trophy on the podium after the Monte-Carlo final.

NO PLEASING UNCLE Nadal’s tough-guy Toni wants more from Spaniard A F P , Monte Carlo

R

afael Nadal wrapped up a fifth consecutive Monte Carlo Masters title and is overwhelming favourite to make it five-in-a-row at the French Open, but his uncle and coach Toni is still not happy. World No 1 Nadal enjoyed a 6-3 2-6 6-1 victory over Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday to equal the record of five titles set by New Zealander Anthony Wilding from a century ago.

He is now 23-1 in claycourt finals, with his only loss coming at Hamburg in May 2007 to Roger Federer and has pulled level with the Swiss with 14 Masters crowns. Uncle Toni however wants more. “He played a good third set, but it’s obvious he must play better than this week,” said Nadal senior. “He was missing a little confidence in his game and you could see that his serve was incredibly weak. But it’s the first tournament on clay this season for him and I hope that with some more matches, it’ll get better.

“We know that there’s a lot of work to do before RolandGarros. But he still won. It’s a very important tournament for us and to win for a fifth time is incredible.” Nadal, who now has a 139-4 winning record on clay since 2005, insists that thoughts of a fifth French Open triumph are at the back of his mind with the Barcelona and Rome Masters to come in between a return to Paris. “I’m not thinking about Roland Garros yet, I’m focused on Barcelona and Rome – there are more important tournaments before Paris,” said Nadal.

Fourth title for the twins

Sanchai and Sonchat with their trophies in Mexico.

Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana are eyeing a return to the ATP Tour after capturing their fourth title of the season at the $US35,000 Challenger Casablanca San Angel in Mexico on Sunday. The twins beat Dominican Republic’s Victor Estrella and Joao Souza of Brazil 6-3 6-3. The Ratiwatanas, who have collected 17 Challenger titles, also won at Salinas, Wroclaw and Melbourne this year. “Our opponents gave us so many free points, which made it easy for us,’’ said Sanchai who finally got acclimatised to the low-oxygen conditions in the city, which is 2,000 metres above sea level. “It was tough for every one because it was difficult to breathe. We just kept the balls on court more and it worked,’’ added Sanchai who moves up 11 notches to No 135, four places below his brother.

Van Gaal savours 6th league title

EYE ON THE FUTURE Pain of missed Grand Slam will make United stronger, says Fergie AFP, London

lex Ferguson insists his decision to field a depleted side in the weekend FA Cup semi-final defeat to Everton will benefit Manchester United’s long-term future. Ferguson, who said his side will be back to full strength for this week’s Premier League clash with Portsmouth, revealed he took the decision to make more changes than planned when he saw the impact of the Wembley pitch on the Arsenal and Chelsea players in the previous day’s tie. In all the manager made eight changes from the starting lineup that beat FC Porto four days previously and fielded a side packed with youngsters and fringe players. But he is adamant he will have all his big names back against Portsmouth tomorrow including ankle injury victim Wayne Rooney. He claimed his side’s performance in the 0-0 draw that was eventually decided on penalties gave hope for the future, and is certain the end of United’s quintuple ambitions will not affect their bid to lift the Premier League and the Champions League. “We had a team picked after Wednesday’s game, but when I saw the pitch yesterday I didn’t want to go into extra-time with our strongest squad,” said the manager. “We had to take the bold deci-

I’m delighted for them, and the only disappointment is they were in a losing team. “I’m satisfied with their performance. Everton didn’t make one chance in the game. I couldn’t see Everton scoring, put it that way. “It’s disappointing when you lose an FA Cup semi-final as we haven’t lost one in my time. But we have to pick them up as we’ve got an important game Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday.

THIS CLUB IS BUILT ON GIVING YOUNGER PLAYERS CHANCES, THEY GOT THAT TODAY AND DIDN’T DISAPPOINT.I’M DELIGHTED FOR THEM. Alex Ferguson

“The good thing is I’ve got no doubt in my mind that the young players can play during the run-in in any game. Marcheda and Danny Wellbeck were outstanding for me.” Ferguson denied a clean sweep of honours was ever realistically on. “It was impossible thinking we could do that,” he added. “In the last few weeks we’ve had a lot of injuries to defenders and I’ve been patching players up. If all our players had been fit you never know, but realistically it’s very difficult.” While Ferguson was left to contemplate United’s first FA Cup semi-final defeat since 1970, Everton manager David Moyes revelled in the success.

Louis van Gaal put an end to a decade-long trophy famine by guiding AZ Alkmaar to the Dutch League title on Sunday and he promptly hailed the achievement as arguably the highlight of his career. Van Gaal, who won back-to-back Spanish titles with Barcelona in 1998-99, said: “This was perhaps the most notable because it was the most unexpected. “I am truly very proud.” Since leaving Barcelona in 2000 the 57year-old had struggled to make his mark, failing to qualify Holland for the 2002 World Cup in his stint as national coach. A brief return to the Nou Camp between 2000 and 2003 came to nothing after which he had a spell as technical director at Ajax, a club he had guided to three Dutch titles between 1994 and 1996. But the call of the dug out proved too strong and in 2005 he returned as manager at AZ Alkmaar where his managerial career had begun back in 1986. “When I arrived here there was still an old 8,000-capacity stadium which was almost never full,” recalled van Gaal who has achieved success on an annual budget of 20 million euros, the sixth lowest in the Dutch first division. “Since 2008 we’ve had a new ground for almost 20,000 fans and since last season we’ve had a full house at each game.”

Robinho celebrates scoring the first goal against West Brom.

ark Hughes wants Brazilian star Robinho to prove his worth by inspiring Manchester City’s bid for European football. Robinho, City’s record £32 million buy, ended his goal drought stretching back to December 28 in Sunday’s 4-2 victory against West Brom. The former Real Madrid star has struggled during the second half of the season and was

dropped by Hughes for City’s previous league game against Fulham. But he remains City’s most talented player and Hughes hopes he can recapture his early-season form to lift the Blues to a top-seven finish. Hughes said: “We are pleased Robby is back on the goal trail. It is his first in 2009 and important for him. “As he has not been scoring, people have been highlighting

that fact. But hopefully he will now go on a run again.” After Robinho’s goal, Nedum Onuoha extended City’s lead in the 20th minute. But West Brom rallied and drew level thanks to a brace from Northern Ireland winger Chris Brunt. Their revival lasted only a minute with Elano putting City back in front from the penalty spot after he had been floored by Jonas Olsson. Substitute

Daniel Sturridge then went on to complete the scoring in stoppage-time. Hughes defended his decision to replace Elano late on with Gelson Fernandes – a move that infuriated some of the crowd. “It was no reflection on his play,” said the City boss. “Sometimes we have to protect players. That was the thinking behind it as he had indicated to the bench he was struggling.”

Inzaghi sends Milan second Veteran Filippo Inzaghi fired a hat-trick to send AC Milan second in Serie A following a 5-1 win over Torino at the San Siro on Sunday. It was Inzaghi’s second hat-trick in his last six matches and took his tally during that period to nine goals to continue his remarkable resurrection this season. While it is Inzaghi’s name that will dominate the headlines it was his combination with former England captain David Beckham that was the true architect of this victory. He received another chance, though, when Donyell Marshall’s three-pointer with 35 seconds left knotted the game at 98-apiece. “I told myself I’ll get it back,” Iguodala said. “Donyell Marshall bailed me out, we got a stop and I got a shot to finish the game out.” After Orlando’s Rashard Lewis missed the potential goahead 17-foot jumper from the right corner, Sixers’ Andre Miller grabbed the rebound, and called a 20-second timeout with 12 seconds left to set up a final play for Iguodala. “He’s our go-to-guy,” Sixers coach Tony DiLeo said. “With most good teams they try to get it into their best players and let them either create for themselves or for others.” Iguodala received the ball following the timeout, took a few dribbles and launched his step-

aware of the importance of today’s result in the race for qualification spots. But he’s confident his side will put the record straight this time against Binh Duong. “We’re looking for nothing

less than a victory to restore our confidence. We’ve been on losing streak of late. [PEA have lost three games on the spin in all competitions] The door to qualification is still open for everyone. I’m absolutely certain we can at least take a point out of the game. Even though they are strong at home and have already beaten us, we have no fear. “We won’t not be underestimating them this time. We’ll clean up the errors that littered the first game. Expect to see a huge effort from every player.” PEA coach Thongsuk Samphangsit is hopeful that midfielder Narongchai Vachiraban can help inspire his side: “I just hope he recovers his form.”

Everton will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final after David Moyes’ side secured a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Manchester United following a goalless draw at Wembley on Sunday. Tim Howard, Everton’s former United keeper, was the hero as he saved from Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand, allowing defender Phil Jagielka to strike the decisive spot-kick. That took Everton to their first final since 1995 and ended United’s hopes of completing a clean sweep of honours. “It was a tough game for us,” Moyes said. “If they put out their under-14s it would have a been a tough game – they are going after every trophy. “For everyone at Everton it is fantastic. If they keep doing what they are doing now, success will not be too far away.” It was the first time Sir Alex Ferguson had experienced defeat at this stage of the competition, but the United manager was furious his side had been denied a second half penalty appeal when Jagielka clipped Danny Welbeck. Tim Cahill saluted Everton’s team spirit after missing the team’s first penalty. Cahill was just relieved that his teammates held their nerve to bail him out for the penalty miss. “It’s the best feeling in the world. I suppose the fans have been waiting for this forever. I’m just overwhelmed really,” Cahill said. “It is a reward for the fans and players. I’m just gutted I didn’t score. But that’s why we are a team because the boys got me out of it. “I wanted the ball to go in the back of the net as soon as possible and just skied it. It happens. If I get another one in the final I will probably have another go. “Tim [Howard] has been amazing. he has been saving everyone’s penalties in training.” Everton captain Phil Neville scored during the shoot-out and he immediately paid tribute to Moyes’ motivational abilities. “He wanted us to go out there and express ourselves. He gave us that confidence – now we need to go and win the cup final.” AFP
