elephone lines provided to give people information on the benefits of germinated brown rice became congested after thousands with health concerns tried to find out about the crop. The Rice Department told Daily Xpress that up to 2,279 people called the department between January 6 and 15 to ask for information and register for a free course on how to make the rice and other products. All seats for the training course held every Wednesday DAILY

are fully reserved till March 4, said an official in charge of the registration.

Healthy rice juice The germinated brown rice or GABA-enriched rice gained huge interest following reports in early January that the healthy rice juice had been offered to His Majesty the King, so the department opened phone lines to help thousands hungry for information. “Each time our officials hung up, another call would come in immediately. This happened during the first week after

opening the lines,” the official said. About 250 people on average have called the department each day during the period. Most of them asked how to make the rice juice, where to sell it and what price they could command. The department also reported that the rice, and products made from the crop, have been in short supply.

A trend Associate Professor Orapin Kerdchoechuen of the Centre for Research and Development of Tropical and Sub-Tropical Crops at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi is one of the researchers who developed the

rice over the past five years and sold it for more than two years. She said eating the rice has now become a trend. “Only two days after an article was published on the rice, over 100 people called us to reserve 400 kilograms as it has been out of stock since the beginning of this month,” Orapin said. Krongkarn Jarupoom, a 72year-old housewife, was one of those who attended the free course despite a long wait. She wanted to learn about the rice in the hope that it would help cure her husband’s forgetfulness and her diabetes. “I’ll try to make the rice every day, though it’s difficult to find rice suitable for germination,” Krongkarn said.

and immerse them in water for at least 12 hours. You need to change the water every 2-3 hours to prevent the grains from getting a preserved smell; change the water every six hours if you oxygenate the water. SECOND: Remove the grains from the water and wash them again. Store them in a thin piece of cloth and protect them from light for at least six hours or until you see the embryo of the grains sprout 0.1 centimetre. THIRD: Wash the germinated rice grains and cook them immediately, or if you want to store them for longer time you can bake them at 65 degrees Celsius until the humidity of the grains is reduced to 11-14 per cent. The centre also sells germinated brown rice and provides workshop training for small and micro-community enterprises or other groups. Call 02-470-7780 or 02-470-7781 or e-mail crdc2007@hotmail.com.

Beware of imposter monks Seems like the downturn is bringing out the worst in some of us. In the face of a worsening economy, more and more men are using monks’ saffron robes as a means of getting money from others. “We have found an increasing number of monk impostors since last year, when the economy started to turn sour,” Phra Rattanamethee said yesterday. He heads the Buddhist clergy’s patrol and monitoring division in Bangkok. According to him, the latest case of a monk impostor was found just behind the Samiannaree Temple in Don Mueang district. “He pleaded guilty,” Phra Rattanamethee said. “He said that by acting like a monk he could get free food from religious people and share it with his daughter. And in the evening he could still live a normal life.” The impostor was reported to the police. Phra Rattanamethee said impostors generally do not fear legal action because their offence carries a light punishment. “Some impostors say they welcome the arrests because they always get free clothes from police as a replacement for the saffron robes that must be removed,” the senior monk said. In fact, many genuine monks who brought the impostors before police have reportedly agreed to give the no-gooders some money. Phra Rattanamethee said a good economy and harsher punishment can stop the impostors. D A I LY X P R E S S

There are wounds on his legs, his right hand, his right cheek, his abdomen, his throat and even his penis, and the wounds must be cleaned on a daily basis. “I’d never thought a cellphone battery could explode,” the 21-yearold truck driver said yesterday. He had used a Nokia 3310 cellphone and usually charged its battery. Samart believes he did everything right when he put the fully charged battery into his phone last Thursday. “But when I turned on my cellphone, the battery exploded. The

THE WORLD Eleven-year-old Franco-Mexican bullfighter Michelito Lagravere performs in Lima on the opening day of the ‘Senor de los Milagros’ festival last year.

A Franco-Mexican child bullfighter killed six young bulls in a controversial spectacle that child protection and anti-bullfighting campaigners had hoped to stop. “I’m happy to have achieved this great victory,” said the 11-yearold matador before leaving the bloodied bull ring in Merida, southeastern Mexico. A local judge earlier gave the go-ahead for the child to fight six calves aged from one to two years after reviewing licences and permits submitted by the child’s father, former French bullfighter Michel Lagravere. Animal-rights groups and child protection officials had previously complained to the state humanrights commission to suspend the event. A video of the fight will be sent to Guinness for consideration for a world record – for the number of bulls killed and the age of the bullfighter. Some 3,500 people, including many young children, witnessed the bullfight. – A F P

briefly Couple gets jail for children’s deaths A husband and wife were sentenced to prison for the deaths of two of their children in a house fire, which was sparked by a candle after money relatives loaned them to restore utilities was used to buy drugs. Ryan Donachy, 26, was sentenced to three-to-seven years in prison. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. Debbie Donachy, 25, was sentenced to just under three years to six years for involuntary manslaughter. The couple’s two-year-old son and one-year-old daughter died in the house fire in November 2007. ‘DEAD ZONES’ MAY SWAMP OCEANS Carbon emissions must be cut or we will lose all seafood, study warns A F P , Paris

G

lobal warming may create “dead zones” in the ocean that would be devoid of fish and seafood and endure for up to two millennia, according to a study published yesterday. Its authors say deep cuts in the world’s carbon emissions are needed to brake a trend capable of wrecking the marine ecosystem and depriving future generations of the harvest of the seas. In a study published online by the journal Nature Geoscience, scientists in Denmark built a computer model to simulate climate

change over the next 100,000 years. At the heart of their model are two well-used scenarios which use atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas, as an indicator of temperature rise.

Worst scenario Under the worst scenario, CO2 concentrations would rise to 1,168 parts per million (ppm) by 2100, or about triple today’s level. Under the more optimistic model, CO2 would reach 549 ppm by 2100, or roughly 50 per cent more than today.

The temperature rise that either would yield depends on several factors: when the peak in carbon emissions is reached and how quickly it falls, and whether the warming unleashes natural triggers, or tipping points, that enhance or prolong the warming in turn. Taking such factors into account, the scientists predict a possible rise of around five to seven degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times under the worst scenario. Under the other scenario, there would be warming of roughly between two to four degrees Celsius. Either scenario spells bad news for the ocean, said Jens Olaf Pepke Pedersen, a physicist at the Technical University of Denmark.

Harry, Chelsea split Britain’s Prince Harry, third in line to the throne, has split with his girlfriend Chelsy Davy after five years. According to the BBC and Britain’s domestic Press Association, both of which cited unnamed royal sources, the 24-year-old split with Davy, a post-graduate law student at Leeds University, weeks after holidaying with her in Mauritius.

Now, 3D erotic flick A Hong Kong film-maker aims to lure audiences back to the cinema with what he says is the world’s first 3D erotic movie. Stephen Shiu Junior, chairman of One Dollar Production, said he would use special effects to make the love scenes in his “3D Sex and Zen” as realistic as possible. “It will probably be the world’s first,” he said. “Just imagine, you’ll be watching it as if you were sitting beside the bed.” – AFP

aunched six years ago by the national arts centre Esplanade as one of three cultural festivals celebrating Singapore’s multi-ethnic heritage, the 2009 edition of “Huayi: Chinese Festival of Arts”, which starts on Friday, promises a delicious feast of entertainment. “Huayi has become a recognised platform to develop and showcase new works,” says JP Nathan, Esplanade’s director

of programming. “This year, we are especially pleased to be working with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Finger Players and new theatre company Paper Monkey.” In “Chinese Opera Meets Animation with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra”, familiar characters like “Red Cliff ” strategist Zhuge Liang and Yang Guifei of the “Four Beauties” are brought to life through the soaring Beijing opera vocals of Zhao Qun and Fu Xiru and captivating ani-

mation by the China Academy of Art. Incorporating their signature puppetry, “Whispers” by Singapore’s Finger Players, tells the story of three women who run away to rediscover the long-suppressed whispers of their heart.

Theatrical feng shui For younger audiences, Paper Monkey presents “The Journey West: White Bone Fiend”, a much- loved Chinese adventure epic, through traditional hand puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets and human actors. Huayi’s curtain raiser is

“Design for Living” by the Edward Lam Dance Theatre from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The production examines the complexities of the struggle for love, wealth and power. Actress-director and Golden Horse winner Sylvia Chang co-wrote the script and also plays the leading role. Another highlight is Zuni Kosahedron’s drama “Tears of Barren Hill”, which was originally created and performed in 1929 by Beijing opera artist Cheng Yanqiu. The story of a woman searching desperately for her husband, it explores issues of humanity against a backdrop of upheaval.

Music fans will not want to miss “in::music” featuring works by independent singersongwriters from Singapore and the region. Meanwhile, classical music enthusiasts await Fan Jingma’s – one of China’s leading vocalists – rendition of Chinese and Western folk songs. Visual arts programmes include an exhibition of woodblock printmaking with a Chinese New Year theme by youths from the Singapore Boys’ Home, and “Ink-finite”, Chinese ink-painting by local artists Lee Yu Juan and Tan Puay Khoon Harry.

But the two stars of “Red Cliff”, Hong Kong heartthrob Tony Leung and JapaneseTaiwanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, were overlooked by judges for the third annual Jeeja kudosfest. Nominated in three categories, Woo’s battle picture faces stiff competition from “The Good, the Bad and the Weird”, leading the field with eight nominations. Set in the lawless Manchurian desert during the tumultuous 1930s, the South Korean “noodle western” was nominated for

best film, best director and best actor. Female star Yanin “Jeeja” Vismistananda is the only Thai among the nominees, getting the nod in the new “best newcomer” category for her role in “Chocolate”. “Forever Enthralled”, which stars China’s Zhang Ziyi, received three nominations, although the “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” actress’s bad luck continues – after being snapped by paparazzi cavorting nude on the beach this month, she misses out on a nomination here. Entries from the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Taiwan have also been selected. Viroj Somnimitr co-founded Global Pets in 2003 to make use of the leftover sheet metal from his family firm View Line, which makes electric switchboards. “We were thinking of expanding and wondered what else we could do with our machinery and metal,” says Viroj, the firm’s export manager. “We did some research and came across a change in the way dogs were being kept. With limited space, urbanites wanted better doghouses to compensate for their pets’ lack of freedom to run around.” There’s quite a choice in styles and sizes, more than 20 models in all, and everything can be customised. They all come in kits, which have proved to be a popular

Freshly split from actress Cherman “Ploy” Boonyasak, singer Pakorn “Dome” Lum is back in the available-heartthrob listings, most recently flogging the perfume DKNY Men. Elca (Thailand) chief Ampornpim Vajrabhaya had him at the State Tower last week to help launch the scent at a party themed around the Donna Karan mantra “Unique … Strong … Soulful”. Before Dome hit the stage to sing his new tune “Tee Ma Tee Pai”, three other handsome blokes took turns embodying the three elements of DKNY Men.

Architect Vasu Varajsilp represented “The Energy”, showing off plans for the industrial-style “Deviated House” he’s dreamed up for the editor of Day Bed magazine. Anon Pairoj was “The Emotion”, and as proof had the award-winning bamboo sofa he calls Par Chaise Lounge: Tropical Minimalist. Federer has not recovered from that position since 2005, when he fought past Rafael Nadal in the Miami Masters final, and has not failed to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinals since the 2004 French Open. He also battled through a five-set tussle with Igor Andreev in the fourth round of last year’s US Open before recovering to win the title. “I enjoy those kind of fights because it doesn’t happen very often, I’ve had maybe five or six in my life,” Federer said. “It’s always special to come back from 2-0. It’s nice for me and I hope it’s a good omen.” Federer came into the match on the back of a sweeping vic-

tory over old adversary Marat Safin and one-sided wins over Andreas Seppi and Evgeny Korolev. But despite winning his last seven matches with Berdych he immediately looked out of sorts against the Czech, plodding around the court and making errors of every description. Berdych was set for an almighty upset but he suddenly collapsed at 3-3 in the third, missing three easy volleys to hand Federer the break, the set and the momentum. “To get the break then was crucial, no doubt,” Federer said. “I came back and it really gave me momentum.” Federer will play del Potro in today’s quarter-finals after the young Argentine also came from behind for a hard-fought win over Cilic. It will be tough for me, but I can try to beat him.” Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Roddick was in ominous form as he steamrollered Spain’s Tommy Robredo 7-5 6-1 6-3 to reach the last eight for the loss of only one set. Roddick will play either Djokovic or Baghdatis in the quarter-finals as he seeks to add to his sole Grand Slam win, the 2003 US Open. “I like the dynamic of me sitting in my room after dinner watching them as opposed to having to work tonight. I’ll watch it,” said the American.

The third seed narrowly avoided the same fate as Jelena Jankevic and Venus Williams when she survived two match points to defeat Cornet 6-2 2-6 7-5. But despite twice serving for the match and at one stage having 5-4 and 40-15, Cornet was unable to take advantage and it was Safira raising her arms in triumph, leaving the Frenchwoman slumped in her chair in tears. “From one-love [in the second] to go down 5-1, it should have never happened to me, being number three in the world,” Safina said. “I played really like a junior today. I think it’s just lucky that I went through. “But really it’s sad that I can make these kind of mistakes.” A brutally honest Safina said it wasn’t the first time it had happened at this year’s Open. “How many chances do I need to have?” she asked. “I’m also lucky that I won the first round [against Alla Kudryavtseva]. “I didn’t even have to stay on the court because she was playing against herself – so

Any chance she gets she just does it to get under my skin, and she does it very successfully.” Serena sparked laughter earlier in the week when she was asked at a press conference what was her best ever win. She answered Roddick, saying she had beaten him 61 when they were both 10 years old. After beating Tommy Robredo in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday Roddick confirmed the result, but disputed the scoreline and said Serena was still refusing to give him a rematch. “The score gets better for her also,” he said. “She’s good at not letting the truth get in the way of a good story sometimes. SERB FALLS WITHOUT A FIGHT W

orld No 1 Jelena Jankovic insisted she still deserved her top ranking despite crashing out of the Australian Open yesterday in a humiliating straight sets loss to French 16th seed Marion Bartoli. In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, the top seeded Serb slumped to a 6-1 6-4 fourth-round loss when a firedup Bartoli tore her game apart. The defeat extends Jankovic’s Grand Slam drought and its comprehensive nature is certain to fuel criticism that she cannot expect recognition as the world’s best until she wins a Major. It also weakens the 23-yearold’s grip on the top spot, with a trio of players capable of overhauling her if they progress far enough at the season-opening Grand Slam. But Jankovic denied feeling pressure to justify her top rank-

I still need to get better, to improve, be much, much tougher out there.” She shrugged off her Melbourne exit as a temporary setback and said that even if she did lose the number one spot she could win it back. “Maybe it will change, the number one ranking, but it’s not important ... [there’s] the whole year ahead of us, a lot of tournaments, a lot of battles out there. “For me, the most important thing is how you finish, not how you begin.” Renowned for her fighting qualities, Jankovic was unable to launch a comeback against Bartoli, saying she struggled to focus and let her opponent dictate the terms of the game.

Barcelona’s formidable attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry came up trumps again as the league leaders crushed Numancia 4-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday. Barcelona’s victory opened up a 15-point cushion over Real Madrid and Sevilla at the top of the Spanish league table. Asian Tour slams Aust PGA move Furious Asian Tour executive chairman Kyi Hla Han yesterday slammed the Australian PGA for its “desperate” attempt at launching a new professional golf series in the Asia-Pacific region. It follows the PGA of Australia announcing on Friday that the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship will be part of a new “super series” of Asia-Pacific golf tournaments from this year. It said it had agreements with the China Golf Association, the Japan Golf Tour, the Korea Golf Association and the Korea PGA to launch the series, which will begin with six elite tourneys. They are scheduled to start with the China Open from April 16-19 and wind up with the Australian PGA Championship on December 10-13. The Asian Tour has long been opposed to the moves with Kyi Hla saying they violate the protocols which govern the International Federation of PGA Tours. – A F P

ichael Ballack has been given a clear hint he will be offered a new deal to stay at Chelsea next season. The German midfielder is out of contract at the end of this campaign but his two-goal display in the FA Cup fourth round victory over Ipswich Town was a timely reminder of his value to the Stamford Bridge club. Ballack has struggled to make an impact this year and his strikes were only his second and third goals of the campaign – and he is still to get off the mark in the Premier League. But Chelsea No 2 Ray Wilkins insisted manager Luiz Felipe Scolari is happy with the former Bayern Munich man’s contribution and expects Ballack to stay put. “I would have thought he will

Hodgson feared worst Roy Hodgson admitted he feared Fulham were heading for an embarrassing FA Cup exit against non-league Kettering before the Premier League team eventually edged into the fifth round. “A draw here would have been a defeat in our minds. But the players showed they have enough fight and character to come back and win a game when at 2-2 we were fearing the worst,” he said. “But we’ve still had just one defeat in 13 and we have to take a lot of pride from that. be in the manager’s plans for next year,” Wilkins said. “He’s a top quality player and that is what the club has been bringing in, top quality. “His contribution has been excellent. He probably covers more acreage than anybody else in our side. With the work he puts in for the team, he’s untouchable, he’s extremely good. “It surprises me he hasn’t scored more this season when you see the quality he has in front of goal. He scored a fantastic goal at Southend but it surprises me he hasn’t scored more. “He was very doubtful today, he took a nasty kick in midweek, and he was scanned yesterday. But the professional in him pulled him through today. He turned up this morning still feeling sore but really wanting to play today.” A 3-1 victory was sealed by Frank Lampard’s late free-kick and the only downside to the win was Ricardo Carvalho’s

We’ll test him in the morning.” Didier Drogba was restored to the substitutes bench and the assistant manager insisted it was unlikely the forward – or anybody else – would be leaving the club. And Wilkins repeated

Scolari’s claim that the club will not be making any moves to strengthen the squad this month and distanced himself from reports that a swap deal between Manchester City’s Robinho and Drogba was imminent. “I wouldn’t have thought anybody would be leaving,” he said. “We have a very strong squad and we will need that squad with all the competitions we are in. “And I don’t think you’ll see anybody coming in this week. I don’t think that will happen. “We haven’t had any dealings whatsoever with Manchester City regarding one of our play-

ers or Robinho so I would have said that’s not on our agenda.” A third successive victory has undoubtedly eased the tension at the London club after a difficult period when the position of Scolari has been placed under intense scrutiny. The fact that two of those wins have come against side in lower divisions suggests a Chelsea revival remains a work in progress but Wilkins insisted the Brazilian manager remained unaffected by the speculation surrounding his position. “He has come in for a lot of stick, and unnecessarily so as well,” Wilkins said.

Last season, Portsmouth were parading the cup around Wembley after Harry Redknapp’s men defeated Cardiff in the final. “In the first half we were out-played and out-fought,” Adams said. “I did warn the players we were up against a very good Swansea team who like to pass the ball and that

we would be in trouble if we weren’t prepared. “Sadly, I was proved right. Without that fight you go out of this competition. We didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down at

half-time but we didn’t play well in the first half either. We were very poor. “It’s disappointing to go out of the FA Cup, no matter what round it is. You have to put defeats like this to bed as quickly as possible.” Swansea, ninth in English football’s second tier, played the better football throughout and took the lead in the 27th minute when Nathan Dyer, on loan from Portsmouth’s local rivals Southampton, converted Jason Scotland’s pass. Trinidad striker Scotland added the second on the stroke of half-time with a penalty after Nadir Belhadj fouled Jordi Gomez and Swansea coasted into the fifth round for the first time since 2004.
