Welcome to Your CSO! At the Charlotte Symphony, we are reimagining what an orchestra can mean to its community. We believe in the transformative power of music, and our commitment to making this art form accessible and meaningful to all has never been stronger.

Hard on the heels of our first performance at Lenny Boy Brewing Co. as part of the Symphony’s On Tap series, and a welcome return visit to Richmond County’s Cole Auditorium, we’re delighted to present The Hot Sardines with their signature take on cool jazz, and kick off the Domtar Family series with Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Missing Maestro.

On November 14th, CSO musicians perform side-byside with the talented young musicians of the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, before we welcome returning guest conductor Kwamé Ryan to lead the Symphony in stellar performances of Verdi’s Requiem, 150 years since it was written, featuring the Charlotte Master Chorale and an outstanding cast of soloists. For Thanksgiving weekend, I hope you’ll join us for the delightful holiday classic Elf in Concert: details of all our holiday offerings can be found on our website!

We understand the power of music to bring people together, enrich lives, and create community, more than words ever can. That is why I am thrilled we have recently announced a trailblazing new initiative — CSO Roadshow, the Charlotte Symphony’s new mobile stage. Launching in the spring, with the first event planned for April 28th with the Latin American Coalition, this innovative traveling performance showcase will take the power of live orchestral music right into the heart of neighborhoods throughout the region. I invite you to learn more on page 14.

Your Charlotte Symphony Experience Whether you’re attending your first Symphony performance, or you’re a longtime subscriber, we’d like to extend to you a warm and inclusive welcome! Below is some helpful information to ensure you make the most of your Charlotte Symphony experience.

What should I wear?

The Charlotte Symphony has no specific dress code. We encourage you to be comfortable and come as yourself in a style of your choice.

When do I applaud?

Audiences applaud to welcome the concertmaster, conductor, and featured artists onstage. Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief silent pause. It is tradition to hold applause until the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, do not be afraid to applaud!

Can I take photos?

Certainly! We welcome and encourage you to capture and share photos before and after the concert, as well as during intermission. Feel free to use your cell phone for photography without flash during the performance, but please refrain from video or audio recording.

Ian Passmore guest conductor

With adventurous musicality and a captivating stage presence, Filipino-American conductor Ian Passmore leads a rich career as an orchestral leader and pedagogue. Hailed as “a rising young conductor” by Fanfare Magazine, his unapologetically Romantic renderings of the standard repertoire harken back to a bygone generation of conductors.

Following two seasons as the Omaha Symphony’s Assistant Conductor, the orchestra named Ian their Associate Conductor in 2019 — a position never before created in its 100year history. Ian has appeared with the orchestras of Kansas City, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Lincoln, the North Carolina Symphony, and the Hanoi Philharmonic in Vietnam. In the 2022-23 season, he debuted with the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Winston-Salem Symphony, and the Oak Ridge Symphony in Tennessee. Artists with whom Ian has recently collaborated include the Canadian Brass, violinist Susanna Perry Gilmore, jazz singer Jackie Allen, pianist Clare Longendyke, and composer Liz Gre. He has also prepared ensembles for Maestro Franz Welser-Möst and violinist Joshua Bell, respectively.

Having begun his own conducting studies at a very early age, Ian’s career also prioritizes conducting pedagogy and music education. His educational contributions include frequent appearances as a guest conductor and adjudicator for student ensembles, as well as numerous speaking engagements.

Recent conference presentations include the International Conductors Guild, the South Dakota Bandmasters Association, and the Nebraska Music Educators Association. Before his appointment in Omaha, Ian served as Associate Instructor of Orchestral Conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he taught conducting, led the IU Conductors’ and All-Campus Orchestras, and guest conducted the IU Chamber, Concert, Symphony, and Philharmonic Orchestras.

University, the Conservatoire de musique de Lyon, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and the Aspen Music Festival & School.

Ian holds a Doctor of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Delaware, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Additional conducting studies were completed at UNC Chapel Hill. In 2022, Ian was nominated for an Outstanding Alumni award at the University of Delaware. His principal conducting mentors were David Effron, Arthur Fagen, James Allen Anderson, Tonu Kalam, and the late Robert Gutter. Ian is a member of the League of American Orchestras, the International Conductors Guild Board of Directors, and the honors music society Pi Kappa Lambda.

Ian is based in North Carolina with his wife Dianna Fiore and their dogs Beethoven, Charlie, Belle, and Heidi. When he’s not on the podium, Ian enjoys cooking, traveling, road biking, and CrossFit. He is the creator of the podcast and YouTube series, “Symphonic Shorts,” which seek to tear down the walls of formality that often surround classical music and make it more accessible to everyone.

“Not many bands have seized the postmillennial early-jazz spotlight with as much gusto as The Hot Sardines.” - WBGO Founded in 2011 by Elizabeth Bougerol and Evan Palazzo over a mutual love of Fats Waller, the Hot Sardines skyrocketed from the wild underground parties of Brooklyn.

Described by The New York Times as “potent and assured” and The Times of London as “simply phenomenal,” the Sardines have been touring their brand of reinvigorated classic jazz worldwide behind a string of celebrated albums and over 60 million digital streams, across platforms.

On August 4, The Hot Sardines released C’est La Vie, a bilingual affair of vintage jazz standards and originals, written by Bougerol and Palazzo. The title song, a Bossa nova original in French, is a timely ode to fully living each moment, even when you don’t know what the next will bring. Unable to travel home in past years, Elizabeth spent time rediscovering and recording early French music, including the 1938 gypsy-jazz breezer “J’attendrai” (Dino Olivieri, Louis Poterat), the dark Django Reinhardt ballad “Si Tu Savais” (Georges Ulmer), and “I Wish You Love,” the 1942 standard by Charles Trenet and Léo Chauliac, with English lyrics by Albert Beach.

The ensemble is sharing a video for a gospel-inflected version of “Moon River”, born when Elizabeth and Evan were tapped by director Greg Mottola to contribute music — and a cameo — to the Miramax release Confess, Fletch (2022, starring Jon Hamm and John Slattery). Additional music for the film includes the new Sardines original “Adieu l’amour,” a foray into the sounds of film noir, and “La Vie en Rose,” a hushed duet with Bob Parins (with whom Elizabeth sang his original “Sweet Pea,” a breakout hit from the Sardines’ album French Fries + Champagne).

“We called our last album Welcome Home, Bon Voyage because we were literally always getting on a plane. We were so lucky to have that success, and we were finally able to reflect on it,” says Elizabeth. Adds Evan, “So we said, 'What do we want to do now?' It turned out we really wanted to write and record more music.” The pair focused on a strippeddown sound to record remotely, calling on collaborators from Los Angeles to Beijing, using very 21st-century technology to record songs written nearly 100 years ago.

The Hot Sardines will be touring throughout 2023-24, including a debut at Carnegie Hall on April 19, 2024, featuring special guest Alan Cumming. They are also producing an original show about that larger-than-life driver of the Harlem renaissance, Fats Waller.
