Bay Art showcases local talent
Supreme Award winner: Pete Beverley hugs Bay Art judge Kay van Dyk on receiving his award at Last Friday’s opening ceremony at Golden Bay High School. Photo: Jo Richards. JO RICHARDS
At the climax of last Friday’s Bay Art awards ceremony, Pete Beverley stood on stage in the Golden Bay High School hall hugging Kay van Dyk, one of this year’s trio of judges. The artist, it appeared, could hardly believe he had just won the Supreme Award. However, there it was: his name on the certificate, physical proof of judge Eve Armstrong’s words, who moments before had delivered the verdict: “One Degree of Separation by Pete Beverley.” Pete’s work – a collection of 18 pencil portraits mounted on a triangular prism structure – was highly praised by the judges for showing, amongst other things, “a high level of technical skill with the sensitive rendering of each portrait” and a “striking and curious presentation”.

THE GB WEEKLY, FRIDAY 27 OCTOBER 2023
After the applause from the large and enthusiastic gathering died down, Golden Bay Community Arts Council (GBCAC) arts worker Claire French declared the formalities over, allowing artists, their family and friends, artlovers, and organisers a further opportunity to examine the 16 winning entries and view some of the other 201 works exhibited in Bay Art and Young@Art. As well as providing a visual feast, the evening also served up a helping of culinary art courtesy of Xanthe Willliams, with an impressive buffet that included some tasty donations from local suppliers. In the days leading up to the official opening, a great deal of preparation had been done behind the scenes to set up the space, accept the artwork, and curate the exhibition. On Friday afternoon, shortly before the
doors opened to the public, head curator Kathy Reilly was busy putting the final touches to the show. Standing close to the end wall in the refurbished hall, Kathy explained that selecting entries to display on the purple background required some thought. “With this colour, some pieces could disappear.” Once the hard choices were made, however, hanging the works was relatively easy. “The picture rail, funded by the high school, is a great system.” Looking around the hall, now flooded with natural light, Kathy said she was impressed by the exhibits and had tried to ensure all were displayed to best effect. “I’m excited by the standard this year ... Everybody’s art is honoured, and the kids are part of it.” At 4.30pm precisely, the doors opened and the public poured in. As they wandered around the exhibition, their eyes absorbed
the talent on show while their ears took in the mood music provided by pianist Jochen Maurer. Just over an hour later, Tilly Orchard cut the red ribbon at the foot of the stage steps, to officially open the formal proceedings. Claire began by welcoming everyone to “Bay Art number 36”, before thanking her fellow arts worker Gary Smith, the Young@Art team, the judges, and sponsors, plus a long list of volunteer helpers. Claire then handed over to GBCAC formerchair Brian Cooper. “This is amazing; it gave me goosebumps,” said Brian, who acknowledged the organising team as “an amazing group of people”, singling out “wonderful Claire” and Kathy for their individual contributions. “Bay Art is going from strength to strength,”...
