In the northerly section of Kahurangi National Park, manpower has restored order where nature had created chaos.
It’s almost five years since ex-tropical cyclone Gita’s devastating downpour destroyed bridges and damaged the footpath on the Kaituna Track. Now, after thousands of hours of hard graft by a small team of volunteers, the track from Kaituna has not only been reinstated, but also extended with a walkable trapline that extends to Mangarakau.
Last Saturday evening, the volunteers were joined by sponsors, members of the public, and a representative from the Department of Conservation (DOC), to celebrate the official opening of the stunning 18km route.
Once assembled in the DOC carpark at the end of Carter Road, the 40-strong group walked to the start of the Kaituna Track where volunteer extraordinaire Des Clark welcomed everyone, before DOC community ranger Andrew Lamason recited a karakia.
Des resumed his opening address, emphasising the theme of “appreciation”, beginning with the initial realisation that Gita had effectively taken the track away. “…You don’t appreciate something until you lose it.”
Given the widespread significant damage inflicted by Gita on the Bay’s other more highprofile tracks, including Abel Tasman, Heaphy and Wainui Falls, DOC were unable to allocate any resources to the Kaituna Track. Rather than complain and protest about the decision, however, the pragmatic locals set about doing it themselves, along with help from friends and sponsors (see full list of acknowledgements on page 23).
Des expressed appreciation for DOC’s ongoing advice, and to local iwi who allowed the trapline to cross their Te Tai Tapu land. “Without their backing and support, we wouldn’t be celebrating today…The ‘old firm’ of Darryl [Wilkins], Patrick [Mulcahy], Brian [Sixtus] and I appreciate all the generosity, support and goodwill we received in the
early days. And that has followed on with the ‘new firm’, that includes Keith [Tomlinson], Rowan [Pomeroy], Jono [Osmers], Shelley [Pomeroy], Haydon [Miller], David [McBurney], Sally [Everett], and Giff [Murray Gifford], plus our trappers Robyn [Darney], and Simon and Barbara [Graves].”
Des also paid tribute to “long suffering partners”, plus the committee, businesses, individuals, and the wider community that he said were part of the “support team”.
He acknowledged that, although most volunteers were of the superannuated variety, it had its benefits when it came to the route design. “…Our aim has always been to form a trapline that is easily walkable.”
Concluding his address, Des called on a colleague to conduct the official opening. “As is sometimes the case up on the track, I do a lot of the talking and Darryl and the team actually get stuff done, so I’ll ask Darryl to cut the ribbon on our collective behalf.”
After the ribbon had been cut, Haydon
acknowledged the team’s “great work, skills and expertise” and said he enjoyed being part of it. “It’s nice to work with people who get things done.”
The party then reconvened at the former Naked Possum, where owners Todd and Michelle McCashin provided spit-roast meat and salad.
During pre-meal conversation, Giff explained that he initiated the far end of the trapline near his home on Snake Creek Road, Mangarakau. “I started by myself.”
Des pointed out that the trapline had already made a significant contribution to the ecology of the surrounding area by deploying around 150 traps to remove pest predators. “We’re up to around 200 stoats and 1,200 rats.”
The subsequent increase in native bird life will be one of the features trampers will be able to enjoy, on what key sponsor Peter Butler of Forest Herbs Research believes will become “the best one-dayer in the Bay once word gets out”.

“It is the club that no one wants to be in,” is how Cheryl Elsey describes the group that she her husband, Ian, are part of. The club is the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support network (SANDS), a group of volunteers which formed 30 years ago, with branches now in most NZ cities.
Members of SANDS have all experienced the loss of a baby and are there to support other families facing the same trauma. Cheryl explains that “the role is to be with someone in their deepest despair from a place of knowing and understanding. To sit and be present with their grief, to support along this unknown journey. Holding their hands and sharing together to take small steps towards healing, and one day to find resilience and peace.”
Because there is no government funding, each SANDS group is responsible for fundraising to provide resources in their area, which are shared with local hospitals and midwifes. Resources include memory boxes for bereaved parents, knitted early loss “pockets”, quilted baby blankets, hats and booties from the tiniest sizes to full term.
In any year, in NZ over 600 babies die between 20 weeks gestation and 12 months old. No official statistics are recorded for pregnancy loss prior to 20 weeks, but the Ministry of Health estimates between 7,500 and 12,750 annually.
Figures don’t tell of the heartache and sadness for every single child, but Cheryl knows. She and Ian lost seven babies. It was only when they were in Wellington with their last one, daughter Lily, that they were told about SANDS. After experiencing so much loss, she now would like to be part of a “national pathway for every hospital to have the same resources and every midwife to have the same awareness”.
Golden Bay is fortunate in that she is here as SANDS “in-person support” for our postcode. Cheryl has completed all levels of SANDS training courses. She explains that there is a “three-point model of care” for shocked and grieving families. Firstly,
to slow down. Secondly, to make memories like taking handprints and photos. Thirdly, “to allow parents to parent their baby by holding, bathing and dressing”, as this is the only opportunity parents get to be with their baby. Although confronting, Cheryl knows personally that in later years these experiences become precious memories.
My own family has been impacted, as my parents lost three babies close to full term. Fifty years ago, there was no counselling, the babies were not even named, and my mum sought support when she was over 80 years old. Thankfully people like Cheryl are now available to support any family who has experienced baby loss.
SANDS has a national conference every two years which includes midwives, doctors, and counsellors, as well as bereaved parents, with Cheryl recently a speaker. Monthly national support meetings happen on Zoom. Cheryl
also runs the monthly “Empty Arms” Zoom meeting for parents who have experienced baby loss and have no living children. October is “Baby Loss Awareness Month”, and a candle ceremony is held as part of the global wave of light in memory of the children who are loved but not growing up.
SANDS also provides advocacy and is part of an independent government-based review committee into deaths of babies and mothers in NZ. In 2019, the Department of Internal Affairs established a website called “Whetūrangitia”, which provides information for anyone to learn what support is available.
As we look back on 2022, I acknowledge and send love to families who have experienced baby loss and will forever carry that child in their hearts.

Jake Baxendale, ex-Golden Bay local, will be back in the Bay in the next few weeks with two different bands: Richter City Rebels and Bazurka.
Richter City Rebels are on their album release tour for Big Fresh and Bazurka is touring the South Island this summer.
“Having grown up in Golden Bay it’s always a huge pleasure to return with different groups, it feels like giving back in some small way to the community that gave me such a love and appreciation for sharing music,” says Jake.
“Richter City Rebels are a bit of a crowd favourite, we’ve been touring Te Tau Ihu/Top of the South every summer for most of the past seven-eight years. A full-on New Orleans style brass band, it’s definitely a huge party vibe. Big Fresh is our new album and it’s been a long time in the making. It’s our third studio album and we’ve done it a bit differently, covering some songs by our friends from Wellington bands Odessa and Raw Collective, and one by Troy Kingi, as well as a few of our own originals.
“I’ve been involved with Bazurka almost as long and it’s great to come back to the Bay with them after our first tour there in 2018. Our music is a uniquely kiwi spin on Eastern European folk music: an aural smorgasbord of raucous jigs, sultry tear-jerking ballads, and spicy dance floor starters! The band is full of heavy hitters like Justin Firefly on guitar and Briar Prastiti on vocals, who reunited with us after living in Greece for a few years – and of course our fearless leader, trumpeter Michael Costeloe, who
has graced the Bay’s stages with groups like Tunes of I and The Wellington City Shake-Em-On-Downers in years past.
“I really hope to see some familiar faces in the crowds when we come through!”
Richter City Rebels, at The Mussel Inn Friday 27 January, 9pm and Bazurka is at Roots Bar, Saturday 4 February, also from 9pm.

Sweet Paname duo hit the road
After two years working on the album and book project Sweet Paname, Sonia Wilson and Nigel Gavin are excited to take their new show on the road. Joining the duo for this part of the tour is young Kiwi/French singer-songwriter Anna Feillet.
The multi-cultural acoustic duo features French-American Paris-born Sonia on vocals and ukulele and Kiwi-American virtuoso musician Nigel on seven-string guitar. After meeting and playing together for the first time at the Whare Flat Folk festival in Dunedin, during Sonia’s first visit to New Zealand on a solo round-the-world trip in December 2014, the pair have since become well-loved in the New Zealand folk music scene. They weave French, Kiwi and American songs with their own original compositions and inspiration from their travels around the world.

Golden Bay’s 125th Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show gets underway at Tākaka’s Rec Park from 8am tomorrow and it promises to be a great day out for everyone – locals, summer visitors, tradespeople and competitors – of all ages.
The show is the Bay’s largest single-day annual event and it’s no surprise that it takes a mammoth feat of organisation to make it happen every year. This week, the full committee, aided by local volunteers, assembled at the show grounds to prepare the produce booth, sheep pens, shearing stands, horse jumps, trade stand allotments, sound systems and complete a hundred other tasks. They were all busy over the festive season, too – finalising entries, preparing catalogues, collating prizes, organising trade stands, sorting prize money, chasing
promotions sub-committee while at the same time dealing with a myriad of phone and email messages.
The executive committee is currently made up of Clive Bird (patron), Duncan McKenzie (president), Noel Baigent (vice president), Jean Wedderburn (secretary), Daphne Woods (treasurer), plus members Jim Nalder, Averill Grant and Tina Delceg.
The horse events are coordinated by chief steward and long-term committee member Anne McKenzie, assisted by the president Duncan McKenzie.
Their combined efforts have created a programme packed full of interest and entertainment, featuring traditional show classes for goats, sheep and poultry. Throughout the day, horseriders, sheep-shearers, wood-choppers and chainsaw experts will be competing in a series of highly entertaining events.

Competitions and exhibitions
Solly’s sheep shearing competition will run all day. This event always attracts a large crowd happy to sit on the hay bales and marvel at the skill and speed of the expert shearers. Next door to the sheep-shearing is the wood-chop competition arena. This year there will be around 20 axemen and women from around the South Island, including several NZ reps and local competitors. Competitions include standing and underhand chops, butchers-block and the spectacular jiggerboard. Requiring less physical exertion but an equal level of concentration, operators will choose their chainsaws for a noisy high-noon showdown between Stihl and Husqvarna teams.
Equestrian events, coordinated by Anne and Duncan McKenzie, start at 8am, run throughout day, and range from the miniature horse class to ponies and hunter class competitions. Immediately after the Grand Parade, Baerbel Hack’s Vaulties will
give an exhibition of gymnastics on horseback.
Another equestrian event follows with the “Two fence challenge”, an elimination event which pitches riders and horses against fellow competitors to see who can jump the highest obstacle.
Show-goers who prefer to get stuck in rather than simply watch should head over to TG Contracting’s digger challenge where they can test their handling skills or “just come and have a go,” says company boss Tristan Graham. “Everyone is welcome – it’s free and it’s not a competition. We’ll also have a few sossies for our clients who can come along for a catch up and a yarn.”
The Tākaka Volunteer Fire Brigade will be there with one of their appliances and FENZ are bringing a Pigeon Valley museum exhibit and an interactive fire escape challenge.

Farm animals, stars of the show For many, the farm animals are the real stars of the A&P Show. The good news is that cattle are back at the show following their absence over previous years due to concerns about Mycoplasma bovis. The 40 or so bovine entries will be joined, though not all at once, by sheep, goats, roosters, ducks and other fowl, all competing for the coveted winner’s ribbons. Sheep, cattle and poultry judging runs from 9.30-11am while goats will be assessed between 11-11.30am.
For those interested in big boys’ toys, the farm machinery dealer stands are the places to visit. BMTT is bringing along heaps of heavy machinery including two tractors (Kioti CK3710 and Deutz Fahr 5125), a couple of JCB excavators, plus bale grabs, a bale feeder and a slasher. The company’s salesman Keith Little and technician Todd Carter will be on site for the day.
Tractor Repairs and Spares will be showing off a variety of tractors and other machines from Fendt and Massey Ferguson.
Branch manager Craig Hovenden will be there to outline the features of the range. “We will have a brand new Fendt 714 G6 tractor with a new Fendt 160V Baler behind it, the new Massey Ferguson 5711 Global Dyna 4, the very popular Massey Ferguson GC1723 with FEL and 60-inch mid-mount deck, a Massey Ferguson 1840 baler, and Massey Ferguson Rake and Tedder,” says Craig who is also planning to feed visitors at his stand. “We’ll have the BBQ going and cold refreshments.”

RURAL VIEWS: Farmer time
JOYCE WYLLIE
Many farmers across the country returned to the classroom last year, and I am one of them. The reason for re-enrolment is called “Farmer Time”. It is an educational programme launched last year by Beef and Lamb NZ Inc which connects students and their teachers from years 1 to 8 with farmers and growers. There are 40 teacher-farmer partnerships so far. It’s been a great start for the programme involving nearly 1000 students engaging directly with someone working on the land.
Farmer Time has been going for six years in the UK, where it originated, and is in Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Australia and now NZ, with USA and South Africa enquiring about it too. New Zealand started with a small pilot group of eight pairs in term one 2022 and have grown it from there. Marie Burke is the national Farmer Time coordinator who matches each class with a farmer. She is a former teacher who farms sheep, cattle and vegetable crops in Gisborne region. Marie says feedback from everyone involved has been really positive: “The kids get so much value from the programme, they absolutely love it.” Beef and Lamb NZ Inc chief executive, Kit Arkwright, says, “the learning opportunities are huge, it humanises the industry and plants the seeds of a potential career. This is real farmers, talking to real children in real time about real topics, giving the opportunity to make a real difference”. The programme promotion to schools says, “if you teach about healthy communities and environment, the living world, the economic world, people who help us, sustainability, healthy kai, statistics, measurement and careers this new programme should be added to your annual plan”.
I responded to a Federated Farmers newsletter requesting farmers to enrol as there was such a demand from schools wanting to join. My Farmer Time experience began in term 3 last year. The class I was connected to were seven-year-olds at
Waterloo School, Wellington. The aim is to Zoom call for about 15 minutes every two weeks but our chats went well over twice that long as the children were so keen and asked great questions. In addition to the size of the farm and numbers of sheep, and discussions about my house cow and why we have so many farm dogs, they raised interesting topics such as “how do you know where a fence starts?”, “how many times a year do you shift sheep and do you need a truck to do that?”, and “what do you do on your farm at Christmas?”. Some students had obviously done research and found that Kaihoka has native snails so we talked about that as well as farm operations. I posted up maps of the farm so they could visualise our place. Because our fences follow ridgelines we don’t have neat square paddocks, so maps were used in maths classes to measure and identify shapes and sizes. I also sent freshly shorn wool to share the feel and smell but not everyone liked it as much as I do.
The idea of Farmer Time is to connect city children with farmers and, for me, it certainly did. I enjoyed the relationships and interactions. The only downside is my lack of tech skills and our lack of cell-phone coverage. This meant Zoom calls needed to be on the computer at the kitchen table so we sent videos of animals, our rural views and what was happening on the farm instead of being able to walk around showing it live as I talked. I received a lovely pile of end-of-year letters: “I liked meeting you and the farm animals”, “I loved the chickens”; “I hope your house cows are having a great day“; “The wool was very fluffy”; “Thank you for giving us the maps and the zoom calls”. Farmer Time was a satisfying experience and I will continue next year with the same teacher and her new class.
Farmer Time would like more farmers to get back into the classroom with all types of food and fibre producers welcome. If you are interested contact details for Marie can be found on the website www.farmertime.co.nz
A new health practice based at the Junction Street’s Rooms for Courage in Tākaka has been established for adults (18 years +) that are “having difficulties managing their mental or chronic illness, wanting support and who want to make change”.
“Chronic Resilience” was started in late 2022 by occupational therapist Rebecca Rae-Hodgson, who wants to use her clinical knowledge and lived experience of chronic and mental illness to support the people of the Bay.
In practical terms, Rebecca works with individuals to understand “who you are, what you do and where you do it”. This information is then used to “work out what is supporting or hindering the [client’s] participation in things they want or need to do. It’s about what is important to you [the client], what matters to you and would bring more meaning to your life – and that is different for every person.”
Rebecca explains, “Occupational therapy is traditionally understood to be [such things as] assistance post-surgery and elderly support, but it is so much more than that.” Chronic Resilience expands this view of occupational therapy into self-management, wellbeing and meaningful activity, and she has the first-hand knowledge to work with clients to “live well with mental or chronic illness”.
Rebecca is a warm and bubbly person who brings her own experience with mental and chronic illness, as well as empathy, compassion, creative thinking, and problem solving. The service is non-judgemental, and her approach is based on each client’s respective strengths and goals. The service offers a “safe space”, as Rebecca has found that the population she works with “often have had lots of invalidation and gaslighting from health professionals, and I want them to have a better experience”.
Rebecca has an upcoming workshop designed for the general community on “values exploration”, which is about “getting clear on your values” and taking steps to align with them in daily life. Attendees can expect to come away with learnings plus take-home resources. “OT is all about doing the thing, not just learning about the thing,” she says. Workshops are running on Saturday 21 and 28 January respectively.
Potential clients are welcome to contact Rebecca for a free 15-minute catch up designed to help understand the service and whether it is a good fit for both parties. Chronic Resilience is a part-time practice, with Rebecca offering plenty of flexibility around client availability and location.
“I’m here to help you work through the hard stuff, as well as find the moments of joy and celebrate the big and little wins. Let’s find ways to build your resilience and strength, while balancing it with self-compassion and rest.”

Short walks (and cycles) in the Bay: Motupipi Hill
Walk or cycle: Motupipi Hill
Distance: Approximately 10km network of tracks
Difficulty: Easy walking / Grade 2 or 3 mountain biking
Terrain: The terrain is a gentle undulating gradient on a well-formed forest track, including a few boggy sections depending on rainfall. The track navigates pine forest and regenerating natives.
Access/parking: Parking is available at Cassidy’s Corner at the corner of Abel Tasman Drive and Rototai Road. Access to the track is approximately 1km away from the carpark at the end of Burnside Road. You may be tempted, but hikers and bikers are strongly discouraged from parking on Burnside Road.
Tips and tricks: There is a map at the entrance and multiple maps scattered throughout the hill. Please respect the sections where you are asked to dismount; this is for your safety and the protection of the track. The hill provides welcome shade in the heat of summer and is well suited for kids, novices or people who want a relaxed ride. The hill is not suitable to use in high winds or after heavy rain.
Motupipi Hill is a community mountain biking park, and a local hub for “human-powered recreation”.
The 48-hectare site was purchased in 2010 and placed in the Rata-Tui Restoration Trust by Beth Burdett and Phil Castle.
The couple tell The GB Weekly, “We have always been great advocates for recreation – but to encourage this you need to have somewhere in proximity [to where you live] to be active. When we moved here in 2002, the only [mountain biking] options were Rameka and Parapara, and we wanted something for non-technical riders. At the time, DOC was not building mountain biking and cycle tracks and we wanted to show it was possible to combine wheeled recreation and conservation.”
To follow The GB Weekly’s favourite route, from Cassidy’s carpark travel on the cycleway across the new Motupipi River cycle bridge and turn left onto Burnside Road. Follow the road onto a farm track and at the signposted gate on the right, head between the paddocks to the start of the trails.
Head straight into the forest via The EZ Way on a cool soft track climbing to the ridgeline between pines and low regenerating natives. Cross the 4WD track and continue onwards to a junction. Here turn left, and at the next junction turn right onto La Rambla. This track zigzags lazily along the eastern side
of the peninsula for about 1.5km until reaching a large clearing, “the main skid site”. From here, you are spoiled for choice for short (and sometimes steep) loop tracks taking you to the edge of the headland, with views across the Motupipi estuary, Pōhara golf course and across Mohua Bay. From here, The GB Weekly likes to complete the loop from the skid site (back to the carpark) via The Grand Traverse – a track gently winding along via Half Pipe Gully, well-shaded and deliciously soft underfoot (or wheel).
Enormous work has gone into considering, engineering, building and maintaining the track, as well as reforestation, to create a community resource dedicated to recreation and biodiversity.. Phil and Beth would like to express their gratitude to several local “trail angels”, who go on missions to clear and maintain the tracks and mow the entrance. The couple are always keen to facilitate planting and maintenance around volunteer work parties.
The best way to get in touch is via the Motupipi Hill Facebook page.
