The refreshed Golden Bay Community Board held its first meeting of the triennial at the council service centre in Tākaka on Tuesday. By the time the meeting ended after almost four hours of presentations, discussions and start-of-term procedural matters, board members were probably in need of some further refreshment. Tasman District Council group manager environmental assurance Kim Drummond temporarily chaired the meeting, until the board had chosen its new chair and deputy chair – Abbie Langford and Grant Knowles respectively. In the meantime, in the rather full conference room, Kim welcomed new communit y board representatives Robert Hewison and Henry Dixon to their inaugural meeting, along with around a dozen members of the public plus several TDC staff. Public forum Paul Sangster ’s contribution was delivered in hybrid Zoom/in-person format; Paul Sangster appeared from his hospital bed while Chris Bennett spoke in the flesh. Paul’s issue was related to stormwater flooding in Reilly Street Tākaka, caused seemingly by TDC’s unconsented and illegal public drain on two properties, and which was preventing Golden Bay Affordable Housing Project (GBAHP) from applying for a Resource Consent. Paul asked the board to advise TDC that the current state of affairs was unacceptable. “I’d like the situation to be resolved.” Chris then provided an update on the GBAHP, pointing out that there were currently 80 families plus 15 pensioners waiting for an affordable home. To date, he said, the project has funded four houses, a fifth is on the way, a sixth has resource consent, and a further three are awaiting resource consent approval. He identified the two main challenges facing the project as land availability and access to finance. On the former, Chris returned to the Reilly Street discussion, explaining that the site could provide up to 16 twobedroom pensioner/disabled homes but the drainage problem was an issue for both resource consent application and approval of Government funding. He closed by making two requests to the board: to convince TDC to deal with the Reilly Street stormwater problem; and look at the viability of freeing up TDC land. Continued on page 3
