Mohua MenzShed recently “ramped up” its contribution to the local community, according to one very satisfied client. “The Mohua MenzShed members have just finished replacing three access ramps and rails here at the Workcentre with the materials and labour funded by a donation from The Lion Foundation,” explains Golden Bay Workcentre Trust coordinator Alli Gardener, adding that they did “a wonderful job”. Mohua MenzShed chair Dave Myall says a team was assembled following an approach from Alli. “Mohua MenzShed provided five
retired men to reconstruct the three ramps at the Workcentre.” But it wasn’t an entirely male workforce. “Katy Smith, who hopes to form a Womens’ Shed, also attended.” Dave says that the team found it a very rewarding experience. “Although most of the blokes hadn’t had any contact with the Workcentre they all enjoyed mixing with students and tutors attending courses there.” Alli believes the outcome is a win-win. “This project has been a very effective collaboration between the Golden Bay Workcentre Trust and has maximised the impact of the funding received for both of

Tasman District Council has assessed how people get around the urban areas of Tasman and created a new Draft Walking and Cycling Strategy. This project has been in development since 2018 when council identified a need to improve walking and cycling within our communities. Council is proposing this strategy as a way to improve several key issues facing our towns in Tasman: Safety – making it safer to get to work and school, to relax in our neighbourhoods and get around in our town centres, especially for children, the elderly and those with an impairment. Liveability – making our urban areas nicer to spend time in and visit, greener and more pedestrian friendly Accessibility – making it easier for all people to get around on four wheels, two wheels, or on foot. Congestion – in some areas, traffic is already slow at peak times. This is expected to get worse as our region grows, unless people have safe options available for getting around within our towns. Climate change – changing how we get around in our urban areas is an achievable and meaningful way we can collectively reduce our region’s CO 2 emissions. While electric vehicles are better for the environment, they are just as bad for traffic and congestion. The strategy sets targets out as far as 2050 and has a community focus which aims to improve neighbourhood streets. It proposes creating of a comprehensive network of connected cycleways and paths across all urban areas, as well as improved pedestrian crossings. The draft also contains plans for all residential and town centre areas of Tasman, and proposes creating 30kmph residential neighbourhood greenways and town centre commercial areas, much like Richmond’s Queen Street, which are safe enough for cyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities to use as part of the wider walking and cycling network. TDC says it realises that not everyone will be able to change their commuting and short journey habits overnight, but with a safer environment people will have better options about the way they travel. Funding has been allocated through the 10-Year Plan 2021 – 2031 with contributions for some aspects of the strategy coming from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency. Submissions are invited until 7 March 2022.

these organisations.” And she is quick to acknowledge those who supported the work. “Many thanks to Dave Myall, John Pearce, Jim Mackie, Gordon Stevenson and Nick Farr of Mohua MenzShed, with assistance from Cam Harwood for completing this work, and to The Lion Foundation for the gifted funds.” The Workcentre job is one of a variety of projects recently completed by the team, says Dave. “The MenzShed have made predator trap boxes for the Rameka Project, planter boxes and picnic tables for Tasman District Council, plus a demountable hide for Forest and Bird.”
