Battling Maidens outfoxed

Golden Bay’s Shield Maidens took on women’s Division 1 champions Richmond Foxes on Saturday in an end-of-season friendly. Although the match was certainly played in a friendly manner, the visitors were far from generous to their Division 2 hosts, who suffered a heavy defeat. But the figures don’t tell the full story; five of the eight goals conceded by the home side came in the first half as the rampant red Foxes dominated possession and the Maidens struggled to get out of their own half. For the first 10 minutes, the home side managed to keep the Foxes at bay but in a 20-minute scoring spree the visitors chalked up five goals. Ten minutes before half-time the Maidens almost opened their own account when a misjudged a back-pass to the Foxes’ keeper almost crept into the net. The second half continued in the same vein, with the visitors dictating the play. But the Maidens are quick learners and they made it increasingly difficult for the Foxes and, despite conceding two more goals, they never gave Homes are where we feel safe. At our open homes, we're determined to keep it that way.

up, communicated well, and played some good football. The Maidens will have also learnt a lot from the Foxes’ attacking mid-fielder Paige Ferguson who put on a masterclass. The cunning little vixen seemed to be everywhere; whether tracking back, pressing forward or just controlling the play, the number 12 was the pivot around which the rest of her team revolved. And it was a fitting end to the game when she struck a sweet, unstoppable drive from outside the box to take the final score to 0-8. Immediately after the final whistle, Maidens’ coach Phil Smith gathered his players together. “The second half was another game,” said Phil, pointing out that their opponents were a highly experienced team. “The Foxes have taken six years to get where they are. We’ve just started the journey.” Later in the day, the Maidens and Foxes reconvened at The Wholemeal Café where the home team announced its annual awards. Phil says there was “nothing but positive feedback from parents and supporters” and a good time

was had by all. “It was a great night and the fact it was joint with the Foxes made it even better.” He took the opportunity to express the team’s gratitude to sponsors and supporters. “I’d like to thank Aydee and the team at Wholemeal Café, Michael and Trudy Page from Outback Spraying, Tony and Fiona from CabinsAndPods.co.nz, and Michael and Talia Lynch from Tangata Homes for all the support given to the Shield Maidens.” This season may be well and truly over, but Phil already has his sights on 2022. “Next season starts now with training resuming on the 19 October at 5pm at the Rec Park Centre for anyone interested.” Shield Maidens Awards: MVP – Ellie Hopkins; Player of the Season – Elizabeth Egan; Most Consistent – Tiana Olney; Most Improved – Renee Selin; Youth Women’s Player of the Season – Isobelle Johnson; Rosie Astill Cup – Mia Goodwin; Captain’s Choice – Jodi Lloyd and Tiana Olney; Players’ Choice – Marina Profendiner; Honourable Mentions – Abbie McConnon, Lily Pederson, Claire Sparrow.

Tasman District Council (TDC) is likely to opt out of the Three Waters Reform programme unless changes are made to the Government’s controversial scheme. Last Wednesday, councillors debated the proposal at length before passing a 17-point resolution, which formed the basis of TDC’s official feedback to the Government. The Three Waters shake-up is part of the Government’s seismic centralisation agenda, which also includes reform of the Resource Management Ac t and a fundamental review of the local government sector. The proposal seeks to transfer the country’s council-owned stormwater, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure to four regional Water Service Entities (WSEs), which would assume responsibility for planning and delivering services, including levying water charges. It’s not a straightforward transaction; under the proposed model, councils will retain ownership of the infrastructure but relinquish all ownership rights. In the centralised scheme, those rights will be exercised by a complex bureaucracy headed by a regional representation group (appointed by locals councils and iwi) which will be responsible for selecting an independent selection panel. This in turn will appoint members to the WSE. The current proposal places TDC, along with 20 other councils, in Entity C whose jurisdictional area spans the top of the South Island, plus Wellington and the East coast region of the North Island. Alternatively, TDC could become part of Entity D, which encompasses the remainder of the South Island, but that is not Government’s preferred option. Irrespective of where it ends up, with only 10-12 elected members on each representation group, there is significant probability that TDC will not have a seat at the table. The reliance on appointments rather than elections, coupled with a lack of accountability to local ratepayers, plus the disconnection between ownership and governance, is causing major concern for many councils and their constituents. There is also a great deal of uncertainty as to the role of Taumata Arowai, which is set to become the dedicated water services regulator for the whole country when the... Continued on page 2
