Pohara’s super sand sculptures

Sunday’s weather was perfect for one of Golden Bay’s summer highlights, the eagerly awaited Sand Sculpture event at Pohara Beach. Crowds of kids and families from the neighbouring motor camp and around Golden Bay turned up at mid-morning for the outgoing tide, and for over three hours, dug, scooped and sculpted up an amazing collection of sand art. These were no mere sandcastles; amongst the creations were marine animals, mermaids and other mythical creatures, a surfing Lego-man, Mickey Mouse, the Bismarck and even an orca eating a hammerhead shark.

Golden Bay Arts Council worker Tania Marsden, who organised the event, was thrilled with the response. “This is a family fun day,” she said. “It’s not a competition - it’s all in the spirit of participating and creativity, and it’s open to everybody. We get whole families, even three generations, but because we have so many different age groups, we can’t categorize the prizes. There is a prize draw at the end; everybody puts in their little donation and their name goes in the box.” A chilly bin, cafe vouchers and go-cart rides were amongst goodies sponsored by hugely supportive local Pohara businesses. The traditional Sand Sculpture trophy for the

“Spirit of Participation”, a sand lantern for the group who most “shone”, was awarded to Joel Gemmell and Logan Gearry, both from Wanaka, who met at the beach and decided to collaborate. They have already hatched plans for next year to create a sculpture based on a labyrinth. Other contenders were the “Melting Potatoes”, and eight-year-old Tom from Invercargill, whose army barracks creation was based on the book Kiwis at War. Tania gave special mention and thanks to the “awesome” businesses that support this family event, to Creative Communities who fund the promotions, and to the Pohara Top 10 Holiday Park for allowing access through

the camp and use of their toilet facilities. Before handing out ice blocks to thirsty workers, she requested that everyone leave the beach as it was found, so that the sculptures could be enjoyed by others before being offered to the tide to take away. “ The Arts Council focus is about strengthening community through the arts,” said Tania. “I’m grateful for this precious Golden Bay beach and the freedom we have to gather here together. I’m reminded of the saying, “The family that plays together stays together.” More photos on pages 2 and 4
