Port Of Thought

CONCEPT The roots of this design came from the history of Ipswich as a trading settlement which were dependent primarily of its connections via the marina to the sea. In particular it was suited to trading with Germany among many other countries. This started in the early 7th Century. Ports of trade are still predominent in the county of Suffolk, these are of economic importance and help to maintain many businesses. The innovation centre aims to meet similair requirements set by the trade in ports. This is where the concept started.

Spiral strand steel cable

Fixtures In order to facilitate the movement of the container across the width of the room and the movement of the table formed from the door taken off the container certain fixtures have been specified.

Spiral strand steel cable Dimensions 10mm diameter This will be used to suspend the door of the shipping container in the centre of the roof of the container. The cable will allow the table to raise and lower when needed and shall be operated by a motorised winch in the roof of the container. It will be visible and allow visitors to interact with the mechanism.

The movement will be facilitated by a heavy duty bearing sheath, which will act similair to that of a double pulley.

Lighting TruLine .5A creates glare-free architectural lighting accents within 5/8” drywall. The 24VDC linear LED system features a shallow, 5/8” deep plaster-in aluminum extrusion (thinner than drywall) that houses a single row of high CRI, commercial-grade white or color changing LED Soft Strip. Its .5” wide diffuser lens projects a clean line of light without LED dots. System mounts directly to studs without joist modification. TruLine channel is sold in 1 foot increments. TruLine .5A may be field-cut to any length. Channel ships in 8 foot lengths. Fixture includes 5 year warranty.

For work taking place in the shipping container canopy, there is a strip installed in the inside rim of the container.

Standard mesh industrial grating The seating is designed to be functional and flexible as a peice of furniture.

These arent designed for comfort for long periods of time, as the space is not designed to function in that way. The slots in the base allow give the ability to connect the seating into various arrangements that allow for individual and group work. With this aprticular material it allows for the seating to come in different colours.

Tables To improve on the flexibility of the space I have designed tables that come in sections attached to three of the walls within the room. Each individual table will be hinged to allow for a workspace or if not it can be folded back down. This works with the movement of the shipping container canopy which will move within the space along with the cuboid seating. This is also an environmentally friendly take on the space as it reduces the need for paper. The tables vary slightly in length due to the breaks in the spans of the walls with columns. The desk is made of MDF board and coated in a high pressure gloss laminate whiteboard top.

These desktops can be supplied by a company and made to measure.

I have specified double sided coating to allow notes taken when flipped down.

Ebony Bark Effect Solid Composite Decking

Concreate is stained to a rich dark grey with earthy tones which enhance the natural patination of the air cured cement. The panels are then finished with a specially formulated high solid oil to give the appearance of raw concrete whilst providing a treated stain resistant surface. Each panel is poured and pressed and left to cure outside before being kilned for strength. This process gives a unique individual appearance to every panel.
