As the Summer months disappear we’re hanging on to the season before we hit the colder months.

With that in mind we have some great events happening this season for all the family! With the Builth Bike Bash starting us off on Sunday 15th September followed by the Builth Fest Duck Race on Saturday 21st September and we have the return of the Builth Wells Food Festival on Saturday 28th September, this is sure to keep you all busy!

Great NEWS! The Post Office is reopening so read more on page 37 and The Market has opened it’s doors for business so read what we thought on page 14. So excited to see doors opening in our high street rather than closing.

In this issue we have done a feature on financial advice, so a big thank you to the businesses that supplied their advice and helpful tips.

The People’s Manor Caer Beris Manor has been at the heart of Builth Wells since it was built in 1896.

With a wealth of history, the Manor is special in one way or another to many in and around the area. Countless locals have worked there, been married there, shared special occasions with loved ones and roamed the grounds on a sunny day.

Now under new ownership, The Manor is set to thrive once more.

The Southwick family arrived on the 1st August, keys in hand and a skip in their step.

Peter, Angie, Kimberley and Omar long to restore the Manor back to it’s glorious self.

They understand the significance the building holds to so many, and are keen to invite the residents of Builth back into what they are calling ‘The people’s Manor’.

A new head chef and team have already seen people flocking to the Manor to get a taste of Mike Evans’ flavourful dishes, with diners stating that their food was simply divine.

Carvery’s have been introduced on Sundays 12pm – 3pm, and their beautiful oak panelled restaurant is host to the new mouth – watering a la carte menu.

Afternoon teas are already proving to be a hit, with the on site Michelin Star trained pastry chef Natalia winning over guests with her delicious cakes and sweets.

Caer Beris has long been a dog friendly venue, which suits the grounds for long leisurely walks.

To ensure four footed pals are happy too, the owners have introduced a ‘Doggy & Me Afternoon Tea’. Which sees a 3 tiered handmade selection of treats for your pup and 10

even includes a Pawsecco or Doggy beer so your dog can join in the fun.

The new owners are keen to push the venue further into the Wedding market, and with the return of Claire Evans, they see the sky as the limit.

Over the next few months, the Manor will play host to a variety of exciting events including a Murder Mystery evening on November 2nd which will see a group of professionals bring the hotel to life Downton Abbey style. (Dressing up encouraged!)

The Christmas period will see a variety of parties and festive evenings.

Christmas day will see the Manor opening it’s doors to non residents, but a very limited number of seats are available.

New Years eve will be a grand affair with a Black tie Gala dinner and party.

We are excited to see what the Southwick family do with Caer Beris, the friendly family state that they are here to stay for a long time, and are excited to become a part of the Builth Wells community.

Derw Veterinary Surgeons Builth Bike Bash Including 2019 Welsh Series Cyclo-cross Race – Round 2 Sunday 15th September 2019 10am - 4pm The 8th Builth Bike Bash will be held on the Royal Welsh Showground, running alongside the 2nd round of the 2019 Welsh Cyclo-cross Series.

We will be running the ‘Tour of Britain Biking Challenge’ – this year it is the total distance ridden in both the men’s (777miles) and ladies (491 miles) Tour a staggering 1268 miles. Come along and help us ride this huge distance – we’ll be counting 1 mile laps, do as any many or few as you want.

There will be all sorts of biking related activities and information at the bash. Freedom Leisure are bringing balance bikes for the youngsters to try and Disability Sport Powys are bringing a range of accessible bikes for you to try. There will be lots of other activities going on; including local sports clubs holding taster sessions, unicycle sessions, info from British Cycling breeze initiative, and from the Powys road safety team, plus lots more (including refreshments).

Alongside the Bike Bash, The Bulls will also host the 2nd round of the Welsh Cyclo-cross series.

With races for everyone from Under 6 to over 60.

Starting at 9.30am.

The cyclo-cross races are a great introduction to racing, everyone is friendly and the courses are not difficult.

Children’s races are split into age categories; under 6, under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14 and under 16 and start at 9.30am. Followed by the adult’s races. Ladies race at 12.30pm and the men at 1.30pm Come a bit earlier than your race time to register or enter online.

Builth Fest News After a brilliant summer which saw us stage our biggest, most successful carnival to date, we look forward to a busy program of events to see us through the second half of the year.

Our first event is our annual duck race. Last year, the weather was against us. The hot dry days meant that the river was too low and then when it rained, there was too much water!

Hopefully this year things will be a bit more settled. We have decided to hold this years race on Saturday 21st September. Starting from Irfon Bridge at 11am and finishing at Swingy Bridge. Ducks are £1 each and are available from Conti’s Newsagents on Builth High Street or the Builth Fest committee members will be on the High Street throughout September and at the Co-op on Brecon Road.

On November 5th, join us at Builth Golf Club for our fireworks and bonfire. More details will follow so keep an eye on the Builth Fest Facebook page.

Natural Remedies Coughs associated with colds are the body’s natural defence intended to clear the airways of unwanted irritants and mucus. Before taking a cough suppressant – which may impair the body’s natural defence system – you may want to first allow homeopathy to help provide relief by supporting the immune system with the right natural remedy.

Tasty delights for all After the sell out success of the first food festival in May, Builth Wells Food Festival is back with it’s next event on Saturday 28th September and this time organisers are planning a bigger festival with even more great food and drink to tantalise your taste buds.

Held in the iconic Strand Hall right in the centre of town, visitors can look forward to sampling a delicious array of food and drink produced both locally and further afield as well as the chance to watch cooking and flower demonstrations on the main stage.

Builth Heritage Busy times at Builth Wells, our meetings have been extremely well attended and we have a full programme up until early 2021.

Our collection of photographs and artefacts at our storage unit will need to be moved in the near future and we are currently in the process of sorting out a new home for them.

Our ultimate aim is of course to house the collection in a location that is accessible to the public, where we can display some of our huge collection and items of interest and make available our research facilities and provide a focal point for visitors to the district and for students to research or learn about their town.

We have spoken to representatives from Heritage Lottery Fund, PCC and PAVO but finding a suitable building and obtaining funding is a huge challenge. Time will tell where we go with this, but the committee is still actively considering the options.

As we listen to the radio, or hear on our TV and online, global warming and governments declaring a Climate Emergency is flooding our thoughts.

On November 8th at 7pm the Strand Hall in Builth Wells will once again be the venue for the annual Remembrance Concert held by the Builth Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion.

Last year saw the commemoration of 100 yrs since the end of World War 1 and was an amazing success with fantastic support from the town and local area both on stage and in the audience, who thoroughly enjoyed the many varied items.

This year the Concert will be focusing on 80 yrs since the start of World War 2 and also D.Day which was commemorated nationwide on 6th June which I’m sure many of you will have seen in the media.

Builth Wells Ladies Choir will be taking part once again and also the local Schools & Organisations who all make this Concert such a wonderful and successful Community Event.

Hopefully there will be some surprise

30th Anniversary Royal Welsh Winter Fair It won’t be long until the showground in Llanelwedd is full of visitors, exhibitors and prize-winning livestock and preparations for the annual Royal Welsh Winter Fair are coming together well.

This year the fair is celebrating its 30th anniversary and will be held on the 25th & 26th November 2019.

As one of the finest prime stock shows in Europe, the Winter Fair draws crowds from far and wide to enjoy two-days packed full of competitions,

festivities and Christmas shopping.

Friday 11th October The Builth Wells & District Heritage Society The Gurkhas - Major Khusiman Gurang will give an insight into perhaps the most famous regiment in the army, that has had connections with Brecon for more than 45 years.
