Builth Fest Carnival Bringing you a week of varied and exciting events for all ages. Beginning on Saturday 8th June at The Fountain, with an open mic night.

Followed by the Car Treasure Hunt on Sunday 9th June with a BBQ at the White Horse.

On Monday, find the Aliens in the shop windows and solve the puzzle followed by a bedtime story with a cookie and drink in the stone circle.

Tuesday is the active night. On the Groe we have children’s races helped by the superb members of Builth Wells Fire Station. After that, Builth Running Club will be organising an adults running race around The Groe.

Flex your brain muscles with a quiz on Wednesday in the Rugby Club and join us on Thursday for the voting for the best scarecrow. The ballot box will be outside The Strand Hall, so come and cast your votes! Friday is the night of the beer race, through the town.

Saturday 15th June is the big day. On the Groe from 12pm with the grand procession through the town at 2pm. Come and see the floats, the fancy dress, stalls from local charities and organisations and enter the crafts. Take a donkey ride, practice your circus skills, play on the inflatables and see it all in comfort on the land train. Performances from a BMX stunt team, our local fire service and a horse display will ensure a thoroughly brilliant day.

August Bank Holiday will be the return of the duck race. With a rounders competition and BBQ. Keep checking the Builth Fest Facebook page for all details. Have a great summer everyone!

The aim of this event was to draw visitors into Builth town. With closures on our High Street and spirits low this event was organised to tackle these issues.

The first event was the Builth Food Festival with an overwhelming number of visitors through the door! With over 500 visitors some stall holders sold out within the first 2 hours. So apologises to anyone who came along later in the day as even though we were hoping to run until 4pm many of the stalls had completely sold out of everything they had brought by midday.

Due to increasing demand we are looking for more Volunteer Drivers for our Community Car Scheme, you can choose whether to drive on local journeys or travel further to the hospitals in Abergavenny, Hereford, Cardiff or even Birmingham. Whichever you could do, would be a huge help to us and to the people in our area who need to use this essential service. Volunteer drivers will need to have a DBS and are paid mileage expenses.

Last year we provided nearly 1500 journeys, travelling over 55000 miles!

We are also looking for more Volunteers in our Charity Shop which raises vital funds to subsidise the cost of these journeys.

Taste of Welsh Hospitality Why did you buy The Lion Hotel in Builth Wells?

Our business has been looking for the right type of hospitality investment in this area for some time. When we learned that the Iconic Lion Hotel had become available for sale, we were absolutely delighted and made an immediate offer. After a few months of tying up the loose ends, we are now the very happy and proud owners of such a wonderful building with such fantastic potential.

What challenges do you expect to face in the The Lion?

We understand, from talking with many of the locals, that The Lion was once a real ‘hub’ of the community, and that over the last few years, it had become a shadow of it’s former standing.

What inspires you when putting your menu together?

Our new menu is constantly being developed and improved by our very enthusiastic Head Chef, Joe Lilly. He is passionate about sourcing the best of Welsh produce for our menus. We have encouraged Joe to show off his skills a little, by having a weekly-changing ‘Specials Board.’ and by the time this edition is published, we will have started our new Sunday Roasts! What do you think people will get out of playing Touch Rugby?

Hopefully a combination of enjoyment, improved fitness, ball skills and the development of teamwork. In fact, if we can make sure the event is enjoyable I think all of the other points will take care of themselves. I am also hoping it can be one of a number of activities and events in and around Builth to help build a strong community spirit which will help everyone.

Roots Touch Rugby What are your main motivations for setting up Touch Rugby?

I suppose it is the combination of a few things.

When at my previous agency in Cardiff, I was part of a small group in our team who arranged a very similar event for 6-8 weeks during the summertime. We then invited all team members along as part of our health and wellbeing programme (although that probably makes it sound more formal than it was). Also as part of my role at Back To Roots, I am constantly looking at ways that we can bring free or low cost health and wellbeing events to the Mid Wales area and partnering up with Builth RFC was a natural fit.

Who can join Roots Rugby?

Almost anyone! We have a guideline age of 12+ (although younger participants are welcome if their parents are happy to join in and help them along), under 16s are to be accompanied by an adult. Other than that it is open to anyone, we would recommend that anyone with health concerns to speak to a doctor beforehand.

Do you need a knowledge of Rugby to be able to join in?

Thankfully no, you don’t need any prior knowledge of the sport. We are proud of the fact that people joining us who have never thrown a rugby ball in their life and to my relief they have returned the following week wanting more! Touch rugby is a far easier game to pick up than 15-a-side rugby and during the first 15 minutes of each session we focus on the basics 32

Do you need to be fit to play Touch Rugby?

Not at all, however it is a great activity to improve fitness. I ran 9k (or nearly two parkruns) in the first week alone without really noticing! Roots Rugby is spread over an hour and a half with regular water breaks. We also have rolling substitutions so first-timers can ease into the sport. We would also like to invite people to come and support friends or family if they are initially uncertain about getting involved.

Are the games competitive?

Yes and no. Obviously we want participants to develop their basic skills and improve their fitness levels through playing this fantastic game. We want people to have that great feeling of scoring or setting up their first try. A healthy competitive edge makes it all the more worthwhile. At the same time, the aim of touch rugby is to use as minimal contact as possible. We have a zero-tolerance approach to aggression and more experience players are tasked with the responsibility of avoiding accidental collisions whenever possible.

100th | Royal Welsh Show

Royal Welsh Show The pinnacle event in the British agricultural calendar, the 100th Royal Welsh Show, will be held on 22nd - 25th July at the showground in Llanelwedd, Builth Wells.

Throughout the four days there will be a number of commemorative celebrations to mark this milestone in the show’s history. These include hosting a wedding for one lucky couple during the first day of the event, a farming through the ages display in our main ring each day, and an awe-inspiring Supreme Champion of Champions class, which will see horses, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs all competing for this one-off 100th Royal Welsh Show title.

Every year, the livestock classes attract thousands of entries from far and wide promising a popular and exciting four-days of competitions.

Along with the fantastic livestock, the show provides something to interest everyone through its wide range of activities including forestry, horticulture, crafts, countryside sports, food and drink and a 12-hour programme each day of exciting entertainment, attractions and displays.

The big attractions in the main ring will be the incredible Atkinson Action Horses, who have spent the past twenty years training horses and riders for film and TV. With recent credits from Poldark, Victoria, Peaky Blinders, The Living and the Dead & Hippopotamus – it is guaranteed this elite force has at some point invaded your TV screen! Prepare to saddle up, strap in and hold on tight, as this fearless team of stunt riders bring their unique display to the main ring each day of

the show.

Visitors can also look forward to watching the daredevil Bolddog Lings motorcycle display team. With non-stop action from start to finish, their display will feature the UK’s top ranked freestyle motocross riders, incorporating the latest heart stopping tricks, entertaining the crowd with their on board commentary - even talking to the crowd while performing a trick flying 35ft in the air!

Returning to entertain the crowds will be the spectacular Regimental Band of the Royal Welsh, Black Mountains Falconry, Tristar Carriage Driving, Meirion Owen and the Quack Pack, Inter Hunt Relay and much more.

Fresh from our May meeting which saw the vivacious Bernie Benton of Bernie Benton Art & Glass give an entertaining and informative class on glass making using beautiful coloured glass, we are still buzzing with enjoyment. Bernie engaged two assistants from the group who had tremendous fun designing a jewellery piece for themselves under her expert watchful eye. We are now looking to engage her again for an actual workshop in the near future.

Wyeside Easter Hunt We hope you all enjoyed the Easter Egg Hunt we helped organise with Wyeside Arts and Glenn Weale from the Co-op. Thank you to all the shops who took part in the Easter Egg Hunt.

This event was organised to raise awareness of the Wyeside Redevelopment project.

The Lucky Winner was Taliesin Parry. Taliesin’s Prize was a VIP Family Cinema ticket allowing him and his Family the exciting opportunity to see what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ at Wyeside.

Now hoping to go from strength to strength many fundraising activities are planned leading up to this year’s performance. A fantastic open mic night was held on April 10th at the Fountain Inn raising funds for Cancer Research. Our next open mic night will be held at the Fountain Inn on June 8th which promises to be great night!

Builth Wells Community Arts Society (BWCAS) wants you. We are performing the Wind in the Willows later this year and would love as many of the local community to get involved, be it on stage or even putting up a poster.

Then another open mic night at the Rugby Club will follow on 25th July. BWCAS would like to thank everyone who takes part and to the venues for their support.

In the year 2000 applications were sent out for millennium funding and with this and also funding from Powys County Council BWCAS was formed.

Their first play ‘A little below Heaven’ was written

by Kevin Dyer, a professional playwright who came and researched the area to make the play relevant to the locals. It was performed in 2002 and directed by Jonathan Morgan, who was instrumental in the launch of BWCAS, and Sue Best, Director of the Willow Globe Shakespeare Company who work very closely with BWCAS.

These are very exciting times for BWCAS so come along and support us or get involved, we’d love to see you. Look out for our posters in the town or log on to our Facebook page, Builth Wells Community Arts Society for more details.

When Wyeside was refurbished in 2012 two comedy playlets by Alan Ayckbourne, Between Mouthfuls and Gosforths Fete, were performed at their launch night by BWCAS to great applause.

From then things went a bit quiet as Jonathan became ill and unfortunately passed away. After a tribute night was held for him at Wyeside, people felt a fitter tribute would be to revive BWCAS and last year a play about Builth Castle

Method

Frango Churrasco (Grilled lemon & garlic chicken)

Ingredients

1. Place the chicken in a shallow, nonmetallic dish and cover with all the other ingredients and mix everything together.

Cover and chill for at least 2 hrs, or overnight if possible. Bring to room temperature 1 hr before grilling.

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

2. Thread half the thighs onto 2 large metal skewers, or wooden ones soaked in water for 10 mins. Repeat with the remaining thighs and another 2 skewers. Heat an outdoor barbecue until very hot, or use an oven grill.

Place on the grill for 6 mins on one side, then turn over and cook for 4 mins. Cook for a few mins more on each side if they are large – keep the heat on medium so they don’t burn. Remove and keep warm under foil.
