I feel with New Year brings a new set of positive thinking, whether that is a new year’s resolution or a business project, it just feels like a fresh start.

I know it’s a sad time for the town with shops currently closing on our High Street and plans for the Post Office unknown.

However, we have so many positive things coming to our town! With the Parkrun on Saturday 2nd March, read more on page 7. Plans to HOPEFULLY build a BMX Pump Track, read more on page 29. NEW Around and About Builth website which will be live from the 1st of March to help visitors see what our town has on offer and locals to keep up to date with what’s on. l have to say it’s been great putting this issue together with much more local features, great advertisers and more.

It’s great to get your feedback, which helps me strive forward with new ideas for this publication and how we can help the town!

Our current project on page 17 is to help raise awareness of the Wyeside Arts Project. We are working with Wyeside to create an Easter Hunt in the town over Easter. More information will be available on the website.

This allows a real get-together and social gathering acting as a belated Christmas party.

There was an added input from the local COOP, who contributed a generous monetary gift to help with overheads. The party was attended by nearly 90 pensioners, who were treated to a sherry reception, all served by the Rotarians.

This was followed by turkey dinner, trifle, cheese & biscuits, mince pies and a warm beverage.

The duo Les & Lesley, accompanied by vocalist Holly, got the party in full swing with some guests dancing in their seats. An extensive raffle saw everyone going home with a gift, and of course, the party ended with nail-biting bingo.

The day was a success, with everyone enjoying themselves, even the hard-worked ladies of the Rotary, who provided and served the meal.

Builth Parkrun Builth is pleased to be holding it’s first Parkrun on Saturday 2nd March, 9am at The Groe. This popular fitness event will soon become a regular fixture in the Builth events calendar. Parkrun, a free weekly 5k event is fantastic for fitness. It is not a race against other runners, but a 5k timed run and it can be whatever you want it to be, whether that’s for fun or as part of a training plan.

It offers an opportunity for all the local community to come together on a regular basis to enjoy the outdoors.

The Groe will become one of the 750 locations across the UK and will be open to all abilities. The event will be held on Saturday mornings.

This popular event started 14 years ago and now has five million people registered.

Lee Jarvis from Builth Wells & District Running Club and Groe Parkrun organiser, said the project started to get more people running in the town. The nearest event to Builth is Newtown.

Post Office News As the Post Office is currently closed and no news or any updates on the future of the Post Office.

For those of you who may not know the mobile Post Van will be situated on The Groe car park every Tuesday from 9:30am - 3:30pm.

Smallholding and Countryside Festival Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th May 2019 Always willing to grasp opportunities and adapt our events to better suit the demands of a changing industry and a dynamic audience, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society is pleased to announce some exciting developments to its annual festival, held each year in May. Next year the Smallholding and Countryside Festival (formerly known as the Spring Festival) will be held at the showground in Llanelwedd on the weekend of the 18th & 19th May. The event will pay homage to it’s humble beginnings and will be centred around smallholding and country life, with smallholders and those who have a love of the countryside and outdoor activities at the heart of the festival.

With an emphasis on celebrating rural life, the festival will still be packed with all different types of livestock, horses and other animals taking part in a busy two-day schedule of competitions and displays.

The Smallholders Centre will continue to be the main port of call for those wanting to dip in and out of the free talks and workshops or pick up some useful advice from the ‘getting started’ stand. It will be the ideal place to stock up on the essentials from the agricultural and smallholding themed tradestands - whether you are after a couple of chickens to add to your flock, a new bucket or perhaps a piece of machinery or new construction project advice to make life back on the smallholding easier, you’ll be sure to find what you need at the event.

We will also be showcasing how to make your land sustainable, whether that is through different management techniques or exploring some diversification options, there will be ideas to consider whilst you’re here. Just pop along and talk to our experts and take a look, first hand, at some of the opportunities for each and every acre.

No Royal Welsh event would be complete without its offering of food and drink… the food hall will once again be bursting with regional producers 10

“Getting hands on and stuck in to all the activities on offer throughout the festival has always been a big attraction to our spring event.” explains Kay Spencer, Festival Director.

“You’ll be able to try your hand at milking a cow, spinning some wool, learn about where your food comes from, to mention a few of the things on offer. Just roll up your sleeves and have a go!”

As usual all the other attractions and popular areas will still be there for you to explore and enjoy. Hundreds of horse classes, scurry driving, vintage vehicles and caravans. The Country Life area which features the only Premier Open Dog Show held in Wales, children’s activities, country pursuits and much more…

Once again all children aged 16 or under will get free entry into the festival, with the adult gate price remaining at £15 for the third year running.

Wyeside Works Project Wyeside Arts Centre, has now completed the first phase of its ‘Wyeside Works’ Project; a feasibility study which has focused on strengthening Wyeside’s business model and developing its facilities and access.

The Centre held a public meeting on Monday January 14th to present its plans to the public.

Those who attended the evening showed clear support for the project, many believing that the project would have a huge positive impact in the town and the surrounding area.

The proposed development would see visitors enter the building via an air lobby through a new main entrance in the centre of the building, and Wyeside explained that they have initiated discussions with the Wales Trunk Road Agency with the aim to improve the approach over the road, massively increasing the safety of pedestrians.

The ground floor would be open plan, with an improved Box Office and Bar to the right and a community studio space to the left. Visitors would be able to access all levels of the Wyeside via a proposed new central staircase with new accessible lift.

Plans for the lower ground floor included the creation of a balcony box to better accommodate seating for disabled customers, an accessible dressing room with shower and WC, and a new ‘Cellar Bar’ under the stone arches behind the auditorium seats.

The upstairs cinema is proposed to be split into two smaller auditoriums. Introducing a third cinema screen is central to Wyeside’s future

business objectives, giving them opportunity to widen the programme and be more immediately reactive to sales and demand.

A new meeting place named the ‘Assembly Room’ will be built above the Market Theatre with views looking out onto the River Wye. Along with the breath-taking view and public terrace, this new community space would be able to offer a range of activities not currently on offer such as trade fairs, large scale exhibitions, weddings, parties, conferences and private hires.

In addition, Wyeside intends to install comprehensive acoustic soundproofing and an efficient heating and cooling system.

Having now completed the feasibility study Wyeside must next work towards achieving RIBA Stage 3 which will involve further design developments and gaining planning approval.

Wyeside also announced the total cost to the redevelopment, which is estimated at circa £5 million. Fundraising consultant Emma Goad of Blue Canary presented a practical fundraising plan to achieve this goal and broke down that figure into achievable categories - which included Lead Gifts, Major Grants and an Individual Giving Campaign - and explained that conversations with major funders have already began to take place.

Get Creative with Wonderwool Wales A masterclass with award-winning crochet designer Jane Crowfoot of Janie Crow has been added to the everpopular programme of Woolschool workshops at Wonderwool Wales, being held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells on April 27th and Beading: Jane Crowfoot 28th, 2019.

Expected to be a sell-out for crochet enthusiasts, the beaded crochet workshop with the 2018 British Craft Awards Crochet Designer of the Year is the show’s first masterclass. Organisers are delighted that Jane has agreed to tutor it.

Recognised as one of the leading designers within her field, she is also acknowledged as one of the pioneers of the UK crochet revival.

A go-to diary date for fibre fans, craft-lovers and makers from the UK and abroad, the vibrant, annual wool and natural fibres showcase Wonderwool Wales 2019 provides the irresistible opportunity to stock up on wool and natural fibre products from more than 200 high quality stalls.

This is coupled with the chance to book on to hands-on workshops and learn or perfect skills with help from an expert.

Pre-bookable Woolschools are always very popular and organisers work hard to offer topics that appeal to a wide range of interests and levels of ability. This year, needle felt makers can join Lydia Needle to craft a cute bunny or Fi Harris to wet felt merino wool to make a beautiful embellished bowl. There will be workshops on knitting, spinning, braiding, willow weaving and more. Tina Francis, working hard to ‘bring bargello back’ in 2019, will teach her group three different bargello stitch patterns; Sue Blacker will show how to choose fleeces for hand spinning and yarn design; there’s a workshop on block printing with Pat Johnson and, thinking ahead, Louise Zlotnicki will inspire participants to create an up-cycled, standing wool Christmas Tree.

There is also the chance to see work by BA Textiles graduate Helen Evans of Helen Margaret Textiles who has been given the chance to exhibit as part of a Wonderwool Wales bursary scheme.

Inspired by the pretty, pastel-coloured houses which give the harbour in her childhood home of Aberaeron its distinctive charm, Helen has produced a range of beautiful woven cushions, whose stunning designs are influenced by the town harbour’s palette of colours and Regency architecture. Helen also received a cheque of £1000 as part of the award scheme, set up for students graduating from the BA Textiles: knit, weave and mixed media course at Carmarthen ^ School of Art, part of Coleg Sir Gar in Carmarthen.

Look out, too, for a display of some of the thousands of poppies from Wonderwool Wales’ commemorative Curtain of Poppies which took centre stage at the 2018 show and to which knitters, crochet enthusiasts and crafts people from all over the UK and abroad sent their handmade contributions. The exhibition will include information about the venues the curtain has visited since its launch last year.

I was a founder and co-director of a digital media agency in Cardiff from 2004 and in 2015 my family relocated back to my home just outside of Builth. What had worked for us in Cardiff wouldn’t work in Mid Wales, so I wanted to try a new approach; to deliver an agency level service specifically for small businesses in Mid Wales.

Our key services are web design workshops; 1-2-1, group sessions and from 2019 there will also be a subscription-based online service.

What have you learnt from running your own business?

Lots! I suppose I am quite long in the tooth when it comes to digital media as the industry is still very new in relative terms. The industry is always changing and therefore the way I run my business and advise clients on their processes are constantly changing.

A Cycling Facility for Builth For the last few years a small group of people in Builth have been negotiating with the County Council for a community Asset Transfer of a piece of Aberfields, near Swingy Bridge.

Their aim is to build a BMX Pump Track, this would be suitable for all bikes, and scooters to use. The track consists of a series of bumps and corners (berms) in an oval shape that can be ridden at any speed. The design of the track means that the large trees on the field will be able to remain. The highest point of the track will be just over 2m high. The proposed dimensions are 25m x 60m.

The group (Builth Bike Bash committee) have just applied for planning permission, and hope to get started later on this year, once funds have been secured.

1. Cook the rice accordingly, drain & keep warm.

2. Meanwhile, make the wraps. Crack the eggs into a large measuring jug, whisk until smooth &season with a pinch of salt. Stir in the parsley.

3. Spray a small non-stick frying pan & place over a high heat. When hot, pour in one-eighth of the egg mixture (or enough to just cover the bottom of the pan), tilting the pan to spread the egg around.

Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until lightly browned underneath, then flip over and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Transfer the wrap to a baking sheet lined with baking parchment, cover with another sheet of parchment and keep warm. Continue this process until you have made 7 more wraps.

4. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add the kidney beans & sauce, pulses & tomato purée & warm through for 3-5 minutes.

Remove from the heat & season lightly.

5. Stir the beans into the rice & divide between the egg wraps. Scatter over the tomato, red onion &cucumber, and roll up loosely.

6. Serve hot with fat-free natural Greek yogurt and lime wedges to squeeze over.

Residents from across Powys are being called upon to gift their time to support a project which aims to improve social connection and wellbeing amongst older people in the county.

Connected Generation is a Big Lottery Fund partnership of five organisations - Royal Voluntary Service, Credu, Disability Powys, Age Cymru Powys and Citizen-’s Advice Powys - who work together across Powys to provide crucial one to one support.

Royal Voluntary Service’s role will be to provide low level practical and emotional support by recruiting volunteer Community Companions, to support older people in their town, village or community. These volunteers will provide valuable company and friendship through regular visits to client’s homes or by taking them out and about. Community Companions will spend time in the company of the older person – making sure they are safe and well, and signposting to other services and activities they could benefit from.
