This project involved designing the lobby and restaurant spaces of an existing hotel in Montreal, Quebec. The space combines tailored minimalism with subtle Japanese design elements. The interior detailing take cues from Japanese vernacular architecture. Traditional Japanese buildings celebrate connections—beams and columns extend beyond their meeting points to draw attention to the joinery.

SUITE

A similar design approach was taken for the hotel’s executive suite. However, the space honors a different element of Japanese architecture—Enfilade room arrangements. Traditional Japanese houses were designed so that one room led into the next and there were no internal corridors. Spaces were divided by thin screens called ‘fusuma.’

CHILDREN’S LIBRARY

Children are naturally inquisitive and are often fascinated by space and the solar system. This library will give the the opportunity to learn more about our universe first hand. The design is inspired by the planetary orbits around the sun. The illuminated, circular cove ceiling at the center of the floor plan represents the sun, while the bookshelves and children’s areas that radiate out from that ceiling represent the planets. To create further visual interest, the space incorporates lots of curved elements and bold colors.
