2022–2023 GREATER CHARLOTTE
COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT
Friends of Heart,
I am truly amazed and proud of all that we’ve accomplished through the generosity of our incredible volunteers, supporters, donors and alongside relentless community partners dedicated to improving health outcomes and saving lives.
We are fortunate to have an impressive and committed Board of Directors and Campaign CoChairs who guided us through an unprecedented year of both financial successes and sustainable community wins that will impact the Greater Charlotte region for years to come. Together this fiscal year we:
• Advocated for the successful passage of Medicaid Expansion which increases healthcare coverage for approximately 600,000 North Carolinians.
• Educated more than 500,000 people on the importance of CPR and AED awareness through Hands-only demonstrations, CPR training toolkits and online resources.
• Established community-based blood pressure, screening, education, and referral initiatives with area partners reaching over 220,000 individuals.
• Increased our partnering organizations’ capacity to store and serve fresh produce, while increasing access to these foods for over 84,000 area residents.
• Equipped over 500 residents with new skills for healthy eating and healthy living through Healthy for LifeTM programming.
• Launched the Collaboration for Equitable Health, powered by Bank of America, with the goal of changing the health trajectory and outcomes of Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, and Native American communities through our pillars to increase access to quality care, activate communities around health education, and empower communities to advocate for policies that influence their opportunity to live long and healthy lives.
• Distributed a Healthy Community Toolbox that places CPR, blood pressure and nutrition resources in the hands of 31,000 families that fall within the largely rural communities that Nucor operates.
• Engaged more than 180 companies in our signature events, workplace well-being efforts and health education.
As we boldly approach the American Heart Association’s centennial celebration of lifesaving achievements and shared vision to equitably advance heart and brain health, we are grateful for your continued partnership and support.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Erin Link Executive Director
LETTER
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
THE MISSION
The American Heart Association is on a mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives.
As an organization, our community impact priorities are delivered in various ways. Although here at the local level we have a greater focus on nutrition security, our organizational priorities expand to many other categories with equity always at the center of our work, guiding all that we do.
2024 IMPACT GOAL
Every person deserves the opportunity for a full, healthy life. As champions for health equity*, by 2024, the American Heart Association will advance cardiovascular health for all, including identifying and removing barriers to health care access and quality.
*Addressing the drivers of health disparities, including the social determinants of health and structural racism, is the only way to truly achieve equitable health and well-being for all.
DRIVING COMMUNITY IMPACT
COLLABORATION FOR EQUITABLE HEALTH
IMPACT REPORT LivableMeck meeting
COLLABORATION FOR EQUITABLE HEALTH
Year One Accomplishments:
Added 80+ dedicated staff across the country
Engaged 188 leaders and community partners
Held over 160 strategy planning and community sessions
More than 80 contracted community health centers in 11 cities
• An equal opportunity to live a healthy life is not a reality for many people of color and people living in historically under-resourced communities in the United States. Bank of America is investing $25 million over five years to launch the Collaboration for Equitable Health, a joint effort to advance healthy outcomes for Black, Hispanic-Latino, AsianAmerican, and Native American people in communities that are historically underserved.
Charlotte was chosen as one of 11 cities across the country.
• Each organization provides tools and resources for different focus areas:
• American Cancer Society – Breast, Colorectal, and Prostate cancer
• American Diabetes Association – Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes
• American Heart Association – High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
• The goal of this work is to advance long-term health by supporting collaborative exchanges between individuals and their medical providers, such as primary care physicians, and support a deeper understanding of overall health.

CONTROLLING BLOOD PRESSURE
IMPACT REPORT HealthReach Community Clinic
The latest prevalence estimates show that 46% of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure. In Mecklenburg County alone, 35% of adults report being hypertensive. Despite the serious risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death, and the fact that we’ve made significant progress improving high blood pressure control rates in the US, blood pressure control remains far from ideal. Through clinical and community partners, we are integrating evidence-based strategies that result in improving blood pressure disparities in our region.
• We are establishing targeted initiatives to address the rural health crisis. HeartCorps recruits Public Health AmeriCorps volunteers to work in rural communities and address the health disparities that affect these communities the most — uncontrolled hypertension, cardiovascular risk and disease and limited public health capacity — while also preparing and inspiring the next generation of public health professionals. The Charlotte team supports two rural Western North Carolina HeartCorp members.
• Leading with mission and a commitment to the health and well-being of their community, Nucor has aligned with American Heart to integrate community health impact tools and trainings that focus on CPR education and blood pressure management reaching more than 300 communities and 31,000 families across the footprint in which they operate.

IMPACT REPORT
• We successfully increased our partners capacity to store and/or serve fresh produce, while increasing access to these foods for over 84,000 area residents. We educated and equipped over 500 residents with new skills for healthy eating and healthy living through Healthy for Life nutrition demonstrations.
• Since opening in May, over 1,400 residents have patroned the North Mecklenburg Community Farmers Market.
• American Heart recognizes that many factors make up whether individuals have nutritious foods available, affordable and/or accessible in their community. Collectively, we are striving toward equitable nutrition security for area residents through sustainable and supportive strategies, including policy efforts at the federal, state, and local levels.
