ba n ks y A satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti done in a distinctive stencilling technique. Such artistic works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy’s work was born of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Asked about his technique, Banksy said: “I use whatever it takes. Sometimes that just means drawing a moustache on a girl’s face on some billboard, sometimes that means sweating for days over an intricate drawing. Efficiency is the key.” Stencils are traditionally hand drawn or printed onto sheets of acetate or card, before being cut out by hand. Because of the secretive nature of Banksy’s work and identity, it is uncertain what techniques he uses to generate the images in his stencils, though it is assumed he uses computers for some images due to the nature of his work.

bast

Brooklyn-based artist BAST has been an intricate part of the street art scene for the past ten years throughout New York and Europe, where his wheat-pasted images feature prominently across the urban landscape although screen printing is at the heart of most all Bast’s work, although it rarely stops there as he collages iconic images and logo’s, before adding thick, heavyhanded layers of paint. And, for fact fans, he can write his name upside down with either hand. The artists has remained elusive character rarely seen in public and whose very existence is debated. Little is known of his work outside what the public sees in throughout New York’s urban environment. His work has become better known as his images have evolved to gallery-exhibition.

Studied as a graphic designer in the early 90’s Bungle’s time finnally ran out and reality took hold, he walked away from what he enjoyed so he could get a job doing something else. Bungle sees everything in layers now. Paste-ups, spray painted graffiti, stencils and stickers all became a huge part of his life. His obsession to paint has born an artist who uses acrylics and spray paint with stencil and freehand techniques to make interesting and challenging work he can fine tune and exhibit on any object if for no other reason than to keep his own sanity. Bungle takes the iconic, famous, beautiful, glamorous and the unremarkable and creates an image with meaning either hidden or unashamed as he looks to question things we see in our daily lives.

copy rig h t Copyright decided to study photography and video production at his local college; it was here he discovered a seemingly limitless supply of art materials he could ‘borrow’ to create his own paintings. It was soon after he had his own eureka moment when he realised he could turn his photographs into stencils. When his source of free supplies finally dried up he turned to the streets as a new free canvas. It was in this very public domain that his work began getting noticed and it wasn’t long before his first showing at a gallery. Many years later with no formal art training or qualifications he is continuously experimenting and pushing his work forward, mixing new materials and techniques with his trademark style with the resulting paintings being as much fine art as street art. Over the last decade Copyright has been invited to show his work worldwide including sell out solo shows in London and Tokyo and most recently his Precious Damage show which saw him sell all 50 works in 3 hours. He was asked to design the cover of Reload Magazine to go alongside a feature about his art, as well as pieces in Harpers Bazaar,

james starr Jim Starr is causing a stir in the contemporary art scene. His work has been exhibited alongside some of the worlds most celebrated contemporary artists and has been exhibited solo at London’s Dalston Superstore and The Coningsby Gallery. He has also shown at The Pall Mall Deposit, London, and at Bristol’s 2 Degrees Gallery and the Wilder Street Gallery. Jim’s use of pop culture and pinup imagery is guaranteed to inspire anyone who loves the louche and the lowbrow. His work fuels the spirit and strikes a chord in the soul, continuing to resonate long after the first glance. Using a mixture of original screen printed material, his own photography, freehand drawings and collage Jim creates unique and sometimes complex hand pulled prints, with no two turning out the same. His current work reveals his borderline obsession with timeless and universal Icons. These easy-on-the-eye images skilfully offer an entry point into a complex world which offers much more than first appears. Jim’s love of travel and his insatiable appetite.

Twisted. Out of kilter. Distopian; are some of the words used to discribe Bristol’s most promising Urban Artist Liz Buckfield and her latest exhibition ‘Ridicule’ which reflects on the world in which we’ve created. Ridicule is an exhibition of painted street signs, canvases and illustrated documents all combined to create a comically animated backdrop of modern day Britain. The settings by turn dickensian, orwellian, populated by consumed characters rather than consumers. Each pursuing their own road to ruin in a world busy ruining itself. !

rupert morley Graduating from Falmouth College of Arts in 2005 with a degree in Illustration, Rupert Morley has since lived and worked in Bristol, part time as an Illustrator and part time as a print technician. Rupert’s work explores aspects of urban and rural life. Often starting with random compositions from ink splatters, he then builds the image around what is on the page, getting a sense of the images theme from the way in which it grows. This enables him to work quickly and therefore keep the images energy intact.

vermin

aka da l e v n. ma rsha ll

Dale Marshall (1974, UK) is a contemporary painter who lives and works in the Welsh countryside, at the foothills of Snowdonia National Park. Originally a graffiti writer painting the streets of Bristol and the South West of England, Dale was sectioned in 1999 in one of Britain’s oldest asylums whilst plagued with psychotic episodes and clinical depression. He attributes his mental health to his once volatile relationship with graffiti and drug abuse, forging a profound effect on his later works, and eventual move into fine art where he now fully embraces the role as a modern day, tortured master. Marshall’s work – along with his alter ego Vermin – documents a personal journey through order and chaos, ingraining deep emotional toil with remnants and empirical memento from his time inside the Cornwall County Asylum. Dale has gained much admiration and acclaim for his candid methodology, expanding his collector base internationally, with shows throughout the UK and USA, including the now legendary Room 101 exhibition and an upcoming largescale UK museum show scheduled for 2014.
