The RiverDogs will battle the Columbia Fireflies for the third time this season in a series that will feature eight games in six days, TuesdaySunday. Two of the first three meetings between the South Division

rivals have been played at Columbia’s Segra Park. The lone

series in Charleston took place in early June, with the final two games

impacted by weather. As a result, the teams will play doublehead-

ers on Tuesday and Saturday this week. The RiverDogs are 10-6 against the Fireflies in the first 16 games this season.

Columbia opens the series with a 35-35 record, placing them second in the Low-A East’s South Division, 15.0 games behind the first-place RiverDogs. The Fireflies are hitting .232 as a team, placing them ninth among the 12 teams in the circuit. They are fourth in the league in walks. Outfielder Juan Carlos Negret sits atop of the league’s home run leaders with 18 long balls, six more than any other player. The versatile Tyler Tolbert, cousin of NFL quarterback Josh Dobbs, is second in the league with 36 stolen bases. The Columbia pitching staff sits fourth in the league with a 4.08 earned run average.

The RiverDogs enter this match-up with the best record in Minor League Baseball and became the first team to reach 50 wins on Sunday evening in Myrtle Beach. They reached that mark approximately 30 minutes before fellow Rays affiliate, Bowling Green, also notched win #50. The RiverDogs pitching staff has posted a league-low 3.53 ERA and leads the circuit in shutouts and strikeouts. The squad’s 12 shutouts are tied with Somerset (Yankees Double-A) for the most in MiLB. The offense paces the league with a solid .260 batting average and is second with 77 home runs. Outfielder Diego Infante has hit nine home runs and his 53 runs batted are tied for the most in the Low-A East.

Tuesday, July 27, Doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m.: Dog Day/$2 Hot Dogs and Beer/Boiled Peanuts/Joe Torre Safe at Home: The RiverDogs and Fireflies will open the night with the resumption of a game suspended by rain earlier this season. The contest will start in the bottom of the second inning with a 0-0 score and be played through nine innings. Following a short break, the teams will play a seven-inning game. During the twin bill, fans can enjoy $2 hot dogs and $2 beers. In the nightcap, the RiverDogs will once again tip their sweetgrass caps to South Carolina’s official state snack by taking the field as the Boiled Peanuts. The team will be wearing dark green uniforms with a peanut pattern on the sleeves. The cap features a peanut-patterned brim and the logo depicts a peanut relaxing in a boiling pot of water. In addition, four-legged friends are welcome every Tuesday so don’t leave them at home! Bring the pup along to the ballpark for each and every Island Coastal Lager Dog Day, when we encourage you to #TakeItEasy. This week, we’ll pay special attention to French Bulldogs. Also, Minor League Baseball and the RiverDogs are teaming with the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation to raise awareness about domestic violence. The foundation’s mission is to educate to end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. Tuesday games are presented by 96.9 the Wolf.

Wednesday, July 28, 7:05 p.m.: Kooks vs. Pogues Night/Wicked Wednesday: Two tribes, one island. To celebrate the start of season two of a popular show filmed in Charleston, actor Charles Esten (Outer Banks, Nashville, Whose Line Is It Anyway) will be in attendance to throw out a ceremonial first pitch and perform the National Anthem. Our wicked ticket deal for this week depends on which tribe you want to claim allegiance to. Use code ‘Kooks’ for $5 off diamond view seats and code ‘Pogues’ for $5 off General Admission tickets. That’s right, the best seats in the building are just $15 or you can get in the ballpark for $3. We’ll also hold several scavenger hunts throughout Charleston leading up to the game and in the ballpark. As is the case for every Wednesday, we will celebrate craft beer and throw in some wicked good fun thanks to Wicked Weed.

Thursday, July 29, 7:05 p.m.: Thirsty Thursday/World Record Attempt: Is there a better combo than wings and beer? Wild Wing Cafe presents the world’s largest wing-eating contest. Purchase a ticket in Section 210 or 211 to join in the Guinness World Records official attempt for the World’s Largest Wing-Eating Contest. The winner will receive a year of free wings from Wild Wing Cafe. One of the first 1,000 fans in the ballpark will also receive a year of free wings! Now for the beverages…$1 beers are available throughout The Joe on each Budweiser Thirsty Thursday this season! That’s right, you can grab a $1 beer (or two) no matter where you are in the ballpark. Don’t forget, DJ Natty Heavy will be dropping beats on the Ashley View Pub. Thursday games are presented by 95SX. Friday, July 30, 7:05 p.m.: Red Shirt Friday/Post-Game Fireworks: Once again, on the final day of the work week, the RiverDogs and Boeing invite you to wear red in support of those who serve our country. On the field, the team will participate as well, wearing special red jerseys. The night will be capped with another fireworks spectacular presented by REV Federal Credit Union set to the tune of one-hit wonders. Friday games are presented by 103.5 WEZL. Saturday, July 31, Doubleheader beginning at 4:05 p.m.: Olympics Night/Post-Game Light Show: Get two games for the price of one! The RiverDogs and Fireflies will play two seven-inning games separated by approximately 30 minutes. By the time this contest rolls around, the Olympic Games in Tokyo will be well underway (hopefully). Athletes participating in the games take tremendous pride in representing their country. On this night, that pride will be focused on the section you are sitting in. Each section will represent a different country and compete in Olympic-themed games between innings with the goal of capturing gold. We’ll also recognize Olympians from the Holy City throughout the evening. Following the game, stick around for a post-game light show featuring our LED lights at The Joe. Saturdays are presented by ABCNews4 and MyTV Charleston.

Sunday, August 1, 5:05 p.m.: Family Sunday/Holy City Sunday: Parking is free and kids will be invited to run the bases following the game! It’s a day sure to be filled with fun for the whole family. We’ll have activities for children throughout the game, both on the field and the video board. The team will pay homage to Charleston’s nickname as “The Holy City” by wearing special uniforms featuring an interlocking “HC” logo with a halo above the “H”. This Sunday is presented by Kickin’ Country.

Meet the Interns!

Needless to say, the 2021 Minor League Baseball season has been a strange one. And who better equipped to handle such a wild season than the new RiverDogs interns. With a smaller staff than normal, the full-time interns have taken the front office by storm.

Let’s introduce a few!

Tatum: The 20-year-old Tatum is a full-time Box Office intern. Going into her senior year at USC, she has a passion for Starbucks coffee and Harry Styles. During her free time, she enjoys going to the beach and boogie boarding! One fun fact about Tatum is that she is a part of the longest-running, family-owned soft drink company. She also had a tough fall down the stairs at our Marsh Gate entrance the other day, and has been the joke of the office ever since (how embarrassing!)

Lucas: The 33-year-old Lucas (who looks like he’s really 27) has spent the 2021 RiverDogs season as a full-time Ticket Sales intern. Lucas has been in the Coast Guard for 10 years and recently graduated from the Citadel as a Veteran student, but is now pursuing a career in sports. Lucas is one of the only interns who enjoys following hockey. Go Bolts!

Zachary: The 21-year-old Zachary started 6 weeks after the rest of the interns, but despite his late start is the best at answering the phone when it rings. Not only does he provide excellent customer service, but he and his mother provide the best banana bread in the world to the front office staff. He even had a banana bread business when he was 11 years old! Zachary will be entering his senior year at USC and plans on majoring in sports management. When he isn’t cheering on the RiverDogs, he enjoys watching Dexter and the Pittsburgh Penguins (another hockey fan!).

Yana: Yana is one of the RiverDogs’ full-time marketing interns. Yana prides herself in being a triplet and jokes around that she and her siblings would have been too powerful as one person so they had to be split into 3. Yana absolutely loves her Airpods, so if she walks by you and doesn’t say “hi” please don’t take offense (it’s not you, it’s her). She is currently entering her senior year at the College of Charleston and loves riding her bike to class to get fresh air and exercise. Her favorite meal is the Wendy’s 4 for $4 because… why not?

Christiana: The 24-year-old Christiana celebrated her birthday on July 26th (if anyone sees her walking around the stadium wish her a happy belated birthday!) and works as a graphic designer and illustrator.

Not only can she draw better than Michelangelo, she also plays 10 instruments including piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and bass! Needless to say, she adds a bit of culture to the RiverDogs office. Her favorite food is her grandmother’s grilled cheese sandwich and has a tattoo of one on her arm!

Sasha: Sasha is one of the RiverDogs video production interns and is responsible many of the beautiful

photographs and videos that get taken in games. She takes her pictures with TWO different cameras and has THREE lenses! (That’s how you know she’s talented). She went to the University of South Carolina (like everyone else in this office) and cheers against Clemson whenever given the chance. Her favorite movie at the moment is Coco (if you haven’t watched it, you really should).

Virginia: One fun fact about Virginia is that she loves baseball. Seriously, that is all she talks about. If anyone wants to strike up a conversation with her, just mention baseball and she will take it from there.

Her favorite part about working for the RiverDogs is watching baseball. Her favorite thing to do when she’s not working in the office is watch baseball. When she goes on vacation, you guessed it, she goes to watch baseball games. In her spare time, Virginia also works for the College of Charleston baseball team keeping statistics (which means she’s good at making charts). Since Virginia didn’t talk about anything other than baseball in this interview, the front office was asked to comment on her and here’s what they had to say: “She is a kind soul and is really good at sweeping things!” -Tatum “I think that she’s a very hard worker and will do anything anybody asks of her with a smile on her face.

She’s going do great things in the world. She also loves baseball in case you didn’t know.” -Caroline Caroline: Caroline is one of the few interns who doesn’t go to USC, but rather goes to the University of Florida, which automatically sets her apart from everyone in the office. Caroline doesn’t like dogs, which might make you think she’s not very friendly, but that would be incorrect! She is very personable and loves her family and friends more than anything in the world. She hopes to one day work in the NFL and is a very big fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Her favorite part about working for the RiverDogs was meeting her best friend Virginia (quick friends over here) and recognizing a newfound passion for groundskeeping. Her best friend Virginia had this to say when asked, “I give Caroline 4 ½ stars. She is a gem.”

The RiverDogs were the first team in Minor League Baseball to reach the 50-win mark this season. Fellow Rays affiliate, High-A Bowling Green, is the only other MiLB team with 50 wins as of Tuesday.

Outfielder Diego Infante is tied for the Low-A East lead with 53 runs batted in.

The player he is tied with, Carolina’s Joe Gray Jr., has been promoted to High-A.
