The RiverDogs welcome the Augusta GreenJackets to The Joe for the first time this season. The teams met earlier this month at SRP Park in Augusta where they split the series 3-3. The GreenJackets are in town for three of the

next four RiverDogs homestands.

Augusta, an Atlanta Braves affiliate, enters the match-up with a 19-22 record and is currently in third place in the Low-A East’s South Division. The GreenJackets are batting .225 as a team and are ninth in the league with 180 runs scored. They are a patient group at the plate, having struck out the second-most times of any team in the league and drawn the third-most walks. Augusta’s pitching staff has combined to post a 4.80 earned run average and has more strikeouts than any other team to this point in the season.

The RiverDogs begin the series having won seven of their last eight games and leading the South Division by 3.0 games. The pitching staff leads Minor League Baseball in both shutouts and ERA. Cole Wilcox, the scheduled starter for both Tuesday and Sunday’s games, leads the league with a 1.46 ERA. Fellow starter Taj Bradley ranks third in strikeouts. At the plate, the RiverDogs are tied for fourth in the Low-A East with a .247 batting average and have scored the third most runs. Infielder Curtis Mead was named the Low-A East’s Player of the Week for the week of June 14-20 after hitting .407 with five doubles, two home runs and ten runs batted

in against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

Tuesday, June 22, 7:05 p.m.: Dog Day: Four-legged friends are welcome every Tuesday so don’t leave them at home! Bring the pup along to the ballpark for each and every Island Coastal Lager Dog Day, when we encourage you to #TakeItEasy. Fans can also enjoy $2 hot dogs and $2 beers on a Tuesday night. This week’s spotlight will shine on Bulldogs. Tuesday games are presented by 96.9 the Wolf.

Wednesday, June 23, 7:05 p.m.: Teacher Appreciation Night/Wicked Wednesday: The RiverDogs will celebrate all of the deserving educators in the Charleston area for their hard work during a difficult year throughout the second game of the homestand. As is the case for every Wednesday at the ballpark, we will celebrate craft beer and throw in some wicked good fun thanks to Wicked Weed.

Thursday, June 24, 7:05 p.m.: Thirsty Thursday: DJ Natty Heavy makes his return to The Joe! He will be dropping beats all night on the Ashley View Pub. Where else would you rather be on a Thursday evening? $1 beers are available throughout The Joe on each Budweiser Thirsty Thursday this season! That’s right, you can grab a $1 beer (or two) no matter where you are in the ballpark. Thursday games are presented by 95SX. Friday, June 25, 7:05 p.m.: Red Shirt Friday/Post-Game Fireworks: As always on the final day of the work week, the RiverDogs and Boeing invite you to wear red in support of those who serve our country. On the field, the team will participate as well, wearing special red jerseys.

The night will be capped with another fireworks spectacular presented by REV Federal Credit Union. The fireworks show will be set to a mix of the top hits from the year 2001. Friday games are presented by 103.5 WEZL. Saturday, June 26, 6:05 p.m.: Toilet Paper Night/Post-Game Light Show: Remember last year when toilet paper was a precious commodity? We would like to help wipe those memories away. After the game, pretend you are in high school, we are your friend and it’s homecoming week. That means you have permission to TP the Joe! This is a bad day to have a bidet. The RiverDogs will take the field once more as their alternate identity, the Boiled Peanuts! The team will tip their sweetgrass caps to South Carolina’s official state snack by wearing dark green uniforms with a peanut pattern on the sleeves. The cap features a peanut-patterned brim and the logo depicts a peanut relaxing in a boiling pot of water. Boy, we are on a roll. Following the game, stick around for a post-game light show featuring our new LED lights at The Joe. Saturdays are presented by ABCNews4 and MyTV Charleston.

Sunday, June 27, 5:05 p.m.: Family Sunday: We’ll close the week with a family Sunday presented

by MUSC Health. Parking is free and all children in attendance will have the opportunity to run the bases following the game. The team will also have fun activities for children throughout the game, both on the field and the video board. This Sunday is presented by Star 99.7.

MiLB:Minor League Brothers Commitment, fortuity, and coincidence all played a part in the story of Brett and Alec Wisely. Two siblings becoming Major League Baseball draft picks is a rare occurrence. Even more rare is for them to be drafted in the same year. Yet, the Wisely brothers, made it happen.

A few days into the 2019 MLB Draft, Brett got a call from a scout preparing him for his selection by the Tampa Bay Rays. “We were all on a bus playing summer ball when I got the call, so we were all pumped for that,” said Brett. “Right when we got to the stadium and got off the bus, one of my buddies told me ‘Hey your brother just got picked up too’”. Brett was selected in the 15th round by the Rays out of Gulf Coast Community College, and Alec was taken in the 34th round by Cleveland out of South Florida.

Brett, who is a year and a half younger than Alec, spent his whole life as his brother’s teammate. Playing youth baseball, Brett always played up a level, which allowed him the chance to compete and play with his older brother. In turn, they shaped each other into the players and the teammates that they wanted to be, “He would always try to help me out. He was always there to make me better,” Brett explained.

While sometimes having your brother and best friend as a teammate is helpful, it is not necessarily always easy. There are times in which you compete for the same spot, or the same role. The pair had to spend their lives competing on a daily basis. “We competed every day. Even when we were younger, we had chores around the house and we would go out to the ping pong table and the loser had to take out the garbage” said the younger Wisely. Luckily, the brothers were able to take their competition with a grain of salt. Brett has always looked up to and wanted to be like his older brother.

Now that Brett and Alec both have their own professional careers, rather than trying to be like one another, they have each grown into their own unique player. Brett has made a name for himself as an infielder and a middle of the order hitter. Meanwhile, Alec has established himself as a professional pitcher.

Brett enters this series with a .254 batting average, four home runs, and 15 RBI in 32 games with the RiverDogs. His brother Alec has appeared in eight games with two different Indians affiliates. He is currently on the High-A Lake County Captains roster.

While they are currently playing in two cities approximately 730 miles apart, the two still stay in touch and try to follow each other’s careers when they can. “My dad messages me all the time telling me about my brother’s game and vice versa,” said Brett.

“If he’s struggling, I’ll give him a call and try my best to cheer him up and tell him to keep at it and have fun”.

Two brothers, teammates, and 2019 draft picks. While the brothers are naturally gifted players, it takes more than pure talent to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft. The ability to lift up and bring out the best in one another is what brought Brett and Alec Wisely’s games to another level. Of course, a little sibling rivalry never hurts.
