S.C.’s environmental movement is a 35-year overnight success story

With the 2024 regular legislative session now in the books, environmental advocates and legislators from both parties agree that South Carolina is emerging as one of America’s greenest red states.

They also agree on the reasons: a state whose culture is inseparable from the land and water that shaped it, and an environmental advocacy community that’s consistently bipartisan, pragmatic and solutions-oriented.

“The environmental advocates have the ear of most of the legislators in a bipartisan manner,” said Charleston Republican Sen. Sandy Senn, who recently won the endorsement of the Conservation Voters of South Carolina (CVSC), an environmental group that rates legislators based on their voting records. “They truly try to be inclusive, as they would have to be to get any traction in Columbia.”

Senate Minority Leader Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, another CVSC endorsee, echoed Senn’s comments, stressing the groups’ practical approach.

“They understand that legislation is crafted through compromise,” Hutto said. “They understand what their priorities are — where they can make tweaks to strengthen their position and where they can give a little. I find

them to be very effective.”

Moreover, he said, they’ve earned the trust of both sides.

“If somebody, anybody, has a question, they meet with them,” Hutto said. “And they don’t tell Democrats one thing and Republicans another, or Upstate people one thing and Lowstate people another. They’re consistent in their messaging.”

Environmental advocates say they’re proud of the trust they’ve fostered and the bipartisan relationships they’ve built. But to any other groups hoping to replicate their success, they offer this note on the process — it’s taken almost 35 years.

Rapid growth … and a very big win

Dana Beach, a pioneer of the state’s modern environmental movement, founded the Coastal Conservation League in 1989. In those days, Beach said, there were “maybe half a dozen” environmental groups working in the state, with no more than 20 total staffers and combined budgets of less than $1 million.

“What happened over the subsequent 34 years is that the number of organizations expanded to in the neighborhood of 20,” Beach said in an interview last week. “The total staff are probably around 160 working

S.C. ranked 8th worst for mental health care

South Carolina ranked as the eighth worst state for mental health care in the U.S. in a 2024 study crafted by Forbes from federal and mental health data.

The study looked at treatment centers and treatment quality in 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine which have the best overall care across seven metrics. Out of the top 10 worst states for mental health care, six are located in the South: Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina.

According to the report, South Carolina has the fewest mental health treatment centers in the U.S. — 6.84 per 10,000 businesses. Additionally, the study showed there is a lack of people in the state’s workforce to operate these facilities and tend to patients.

full time on conservation, with a total combined budget in excess of $2o million.”

And as Beach is quick to point out, those are just operating budgets. He estimates that the current public and private investment in land conservation is “now in the hundreds of millions, approaching billions.”

“The sheer capacity was just very limited 34 years ago,” Beach said. “And that’s the big change in the movement — a massive increase in capacity, staff and budget, and organizational depth and ability.”

Also present in those early years was S.C. Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Charleston, who was first elected to the state legislature in 1997. Like most observers, he says the movement’s success has been built on a foundation of bipartisan compromise and pragmatic solutions.

“It is a big-tent conservation movement, and you don’t see that in other states,” Campsen told Charleston City Paper. “And a big reason is because most of our conservation initiatives are conservation by negotiation and compensation and not by regulation.”

Key to that strategy since 2004 has been the South Carolina Conservation Bank, which to this day is described by many in the environmental movement as their most historic achievement, with 375,000 acres of

Dorchester tribe to seek federal recognition

The Edisto-Natchez Kusso Tribe of South Carolina said it will soon tell the federal government it intends to seek recognition as the second sovereign Native American community in the Palmetto State.

It could take a year before the tribe submits a formal application to the U.S. Indian Affairs for the highly coveted status that was granted in 1941 to the Catawba Indian Nation near Rock Hill, said Chief John Glenn Creel.

The designation would give the local tribe the long sought-after acknowledgement that it exists, he said. It would also create the “opportunity to improve health care and housing.

“This would make resources available to acquire land in and around our communities for conservation and to use for teaching our next generations how to be good stewards of the land while farming, hunting and fishing,” the chief said.

As part of the process for federal recognition, the Edisto-Natchez Kusso people in Dorchester and Colleton counties have recovered a nearly forgotten part of their history.

With the help of College of Charleston assistant professor Brennan Keegan, the tribe is doing a comprehensive genealogy study that shows “in our genealogy we have the blood of Indian Mary [of Edisto Island] in our tribe,” Creel said.

Historians consider Indian Mary’s descendants as living links to the Edisto Indians, who are considered to be extinct as a tribal group.

When Europeans arrived in what would become South Carolina, the Edisto lived between today’s Savannah and Edisto rivers. St. Helena Island was the tribe’s original home. By the late 1500s, the Edisto settled on Edisto Island.

The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians near Moncks Corner in Berkeley County also says it has a genetic connection with Indian Mary.

The Edisto-Natchez Kusso’s kinship ties with indigenous people will be displayed at the tribe’s community center that is expected to be completed in October in time for the tribe’s homecoming, Creel said. The community center is near the tribe’s Edisto Indian Free Clinic in the Four Holes Indian Community southwest of Ridgeville where Creel is a family physician.

The tribe recently broke ground for the center named for Robert Davidson, who served as chief from 1969 until 1982 and

John Glenn Creel, chief of the Edisto-Natchez Kusso Tribe of South Carolina, said a community center currently under construction in the Four Holes Indian Community in Dorchester County is just one of the planned construction projects the tribe is considering

led the tribe’s efforts to gain recognition in 1972 from South Carolina as an indigenous Native American community.

About 800 tribal members live along the Edisto River in the Creel Town Indian Community in Colleton County and the Four Holes community in Dorchester County.

Two tribes become one

The story of how this amalgamated tribe was created and settled in Lowcountry South Carolina begins in 1729 during the French and Indians Wars in Mississippi.

During the war, a band of the Natchez people left its Mississippi land near present-day Natchez to live among the Cherokee in North Carolina. By 1747, the Natchez left the Cherokee and settled in the Charleston area.

In 1675, a group of Kusso people sold about 12,000 acres to the colonial government at today’s Charlestowne Landing, according to a story map prepared by Keegan and her post-graduate student Kit Kelly of Summerville.

Eventually, the Natchez and Kusso were pushed to the interior where they were granted land near the Edisto River and later joined to form its communities. Beginning in the 1840s, they began to move off of land reserved for them to form Creel Town and Four Holes communities.

Civil rights history

During the period of school desegregation, tribal members joined with Black civil rights activists to integrate schools in Dorchester County.

Florence Crittenton looks to empower young mothers in new ways

Nonprofit maternity group Florence Crittenton hosted its annual Legacy of Hope Brunch May 21 to support the agency’s ongoing work as well as several coming changes, including relocating from its historic St. Margaret Street residence.

Florence Crittenton, the only maternity group home in South Carolina that services minors, is now looking to relocate from its 14,000 square-foot building into something more home-like, which will provide a better environment for the girls, ages 14 to 22, who grow up in the agency’s care.

The tribal communities had schools for their children during the period of racial segregation.

“They were trying to get our children in the public schools,” Creel said. “And the African American parents held out registering their children to allow the native children to register so [the state government] could not say there was no room for the native children,” he said.

Dorchester County advocate Victoria DeLee and John Reynolds, an activist with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), were part of the effort to desegregate the county schools, he said.

“When we [were] integrating the school and we [were] picketing … the sheriff went to arrest me … said I didn’t have no Indians in Dorchester County,” DeLee said in a 2006 interview with University of South Carolina professor Cleveland Sellers. “The news media was going to [interview] us … to find out from me … did I have any Indians.” To prepare for the interview, DeLee said she and others plucked turkey feathers for headbands.

“It’s bad, but we pulled them feathers out of them turkeys so we could get feathers.” she said. “The news media showed up to the school that morning because we [were] picketing the school, and the sheriff … and all was there, so when we [came] out there … we had real Indians with feathers and their [head] bands. And then the news media went and [said], ‘Sure enough. There [are] Indians in Dorchester County.’ We laughed about it.”

“It is sad sometimes when we read that the Kusso are extinct and the Natchez are extinct,” Creel said. “It is [like a] knife in the chest because we are still here.”

“When you think about the younger end of the spectrum … they’re not growing up in a home, they’re growing up in an institutional building,” said Cheryl O’Donnell, executive director of Florence Crittenton Women who live in the house and give birth are allowed to keep their children in the home with them until they are 2. O’Donnell said they also thought about the young women’s children when considering the best path forward.

By selling the property, O’Donnell aims to open up more of the agency’s finances for use on developing innovative programs that serve not only the girls living in Florence Crittenton’s residence but also young women living at home, with friends or with other trusted adults.

“There was a time when congregate care was the most appropriate for young women in our care,” O’Donnell said. “They lived here preparing for their children to be put up for adoption, and that was in a time where there was a lot of societal pressures and stigma. Those aren’t there anymore, and yet we still continue to fund that model, and we’re seeing every day that’s not what they need.”

“We know that a residential home is needed because we get calls every single day requesting help,” O’Donnell said. “But can we do it in a different way, in a better way, that gives us improved outcomes, but also allows us to help young women who need more than just this building?”

According to O’Donnell, most of the young women who have come through Florence Crittenton’s residential building in the past five years have a plan to raise their child.

“A big misconception is that the young women are here preparing to have their babies adopted, and that’s not the case,” she said. “They’re coming here with the need for parenting support while they’re still kids themselves.”

land protected at a cost of $865 an acre..

“We have been able to protect property at an ecosystem scale because of this — because (leveraging every dollar makes) it’s so efficient and because it respects property rights,” said Campsen, primary author and sponsor of the bill that created the bank.

Taken together, the Conservation Bank and private programs with similar models have protected 3 million acres — or about 15% of all the land in South Carolina. Gov. Henry McMaster has set a goal of doubling that number to 6 million by 2050.

Today and tomorrow

By any standard, this year’s regular legislative session was a success for conservationists, who worked to secure new investments in land protection and clean water, as well as the state’s first legislation to protect its increasingly endangered blue crab population.

But their real accomplishment was in stopping — or as they describe it, “pausing” — a massive energy bill that called for a new, generational commitment to natural gas at the very moment the nation is moving away from long-term reliance on fossil fuels. And once again, their efforts were pragmatic and constructive, recognizing from the start that South Carolina is the nation’s fastest growing state with expanding energy needs.

“The environmental community has never been a ‘just say no’ movement in South Carolina,” said Eddy Moore, a greenhouse gas emissions expert with the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy. “We’ve tried to put processes in place that develop new sources of energy at a benefit to ratepayers.”

John Tynan, president of the CVSC, points to the passage of 2019’s Energy Freedom Act as an example of Moore’s point.

“This was a transformative piece of cleanenergy legislation that was unanimously supported in the House and the Senate,” Tynan said. “To get unanimous votes in both chambers and get it signed by the governor really speaks to our ability to build consensus, and also work on some bold and critical issues.”

In terms of the future, Tynan says the movement is focused on three big issues: meeting the goal of protecting an additional 3 million acres, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by generating abundant renewable energy and ensuring that citizens’ environmental concerns continue to be heard by legislators, regulators and the courts.

And in pursuit of those goals, Tynan said his organization plans to keep doing what’s worked so well for the past three-plus decades — real bipartisanship, and not just in terms of policy-making.

“What’s really unique across the country is that we do support Republicans when they run for office — we do give them our accolades, along with Democrats,” he said. “When folks have our back, we want them to know we’ll have their back on the election trail.”

Blotter of the Week

A North Charleston woman on May 17 told police that the metal chair she usually keeps on her front porch was on the ground in front of her home near Dorchester Road. She was unable to tell police who may have moved it, but she wanted it to be documented. We aren’t ones to speculate, but maybe Triple H just needed to borrow the chair for a minute. Maybe.

Dude, you almost had him

Mount Pleasant police on May 8 chased down two vehicles apparently street racing on U.S. Highway 17, reaching speeds between 90 mph and 100 mph, according to a report. Both vehicles reportedly stopped for a responding officer, who noted how one driver “made an excited utterance” of “I have never gone that fast on the highway before.” Maybe you should have gone faster.

Too cool for rules

Charleston police on May 13 arrested a downtown man after receiving reports about a drunk person wearing slippers waving “finger guns” at passersby on Meeting Street. The police report does not say whether the man was also saying, “Aaaye,” as he pointed at folks, but we think that may have helped his case.

The Blotter is taken from reports filed with area police departments between May 8 and May 17.

S.C. Freedom Caucus isn’t ‘conservative’

Any number of “c” words spring to mind when one thinks of the so-called South Carolina House Freedom Caucus: combative, corrosive, childish, churlish, chuckleheaded and crazypants, just to name just a few. One that doesn’t or at least shouldn’t? Conservative. Because the S.C. Freedom Caucus, with its taste for institutional vandalism and radical policy demands, is anything but that.

Ready to put a scared 17-year-old girl to death for getting an abortion? Members of the S.C. Freedom Caucus sponsored a bill to make it happen (H-3549). Looking to refight the nullification crisis of 1833? Again, the Freedom Caucus can help (H-3539). Or how about sowing distrust in our electoral institutions by falsely accusing state employees of trying to register non-citizens to vote? Yeah, the Freedom Caucus has got you covered there, too.

Of course, the 17 caucus members hate it when anyone points out any of this. After all, hijacking the popular word “conservative” — turning it into a synonym for hormonal rightwing rage, rather than a generally honorable set of political commitments — is key to their electoral strategy. Without appropriation of the “conservative” label, they’re just one more gang of angry crackpots ALL CAPPING their way through another long and lonely day on X or other social media.

So the task for mainstream Republicans this primary season is to remind South Carolinians what conservatism actually stands for — and to unapologetically retake the word from the dilettantes.

“To be conservative,” the political theorist Michael Oakeshott said in his famous definition of the term, “is to prefer the familiar to the unknown, to prefer the tried to the

untried, fact to mystery, the actual to the possible, the limited to the unbounded, the near to the distant, the sufficient to the superabundant, the convenient to the perfect, present laughter to utopian bliss.” Or as National Review founder William F. Buckley more pithily put it, “A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling ‘Stop.’ ”

Put simply, conservatism is less a political ideology and more a philosophical argument for slow, evolutionary change in government, society and culture. (Although, truth be told, if you look at recent fast changes on guns, abortion and sex emanating from Columbia, you may wonder who are the real conservatives.)

Everyday conservatism views established institutions and traditions as storehouses of hard-won and all-too-easily forgotten wisdom. It warns against grand schemes and unintended consequences. It sees rashness in passion, peril in certainty, folly in zeal, and danger in disorder.

In other words, it should exist to oppose every radical and irresponsible move the S.C. Freedom Caucus makes, from recent and unwarranted attacks on our state’s electoral system to extreme and often just plain kooky legislation that seeks to suddenly change our state in ways we can hardly imagine.

Long story short, there’s a reason Lexington Republican Rep. Micah Caskey — a Marine Corps veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and longtime man of the right — recently donned a tinfoil hat to mock Freedom Caucus members on the House floor. And it wasn’t because they’re “ultra-conservative.” It was because they aren’t conservative at all.

GOP voters need to keep all of this in mind when they find themselves staring at a Freedom Caucus name on a primary ballot. Perhaps they’d like to consider a conservative instead.

CHARLESTON

objectives

We encourage community leaders to act on these audacious priorities:

1. Deal with the water. Build a strong resiliency plan to harden infrastructure and make smart climate change decisions about development, roads and quality of life.

2. Fix roads, traffic. Repair and improve roads and reduce traffic. Speed up alternatives, including more public transportation.

3. Be smarter about education. Inject new energy into the broken Charleston County school board by focusing on kids, not national mantras.

4. Conduct public business in public. Be transparent in public business. Stop the secrecy.

5. Invest in quality of life. Build more parks. Have more festivals. Invest in infrastructure that promotes a broad sense of community.

6. Engage in real racial conciliation. If we embark on more conversations and actions on racial reconciliation, our community will strengthen and grow.

7. Develop fewer hotels, more affordable housing. Make Charleston a more affordable place to live for everyone.

8. Develop Union Pier at scale. Let’s not put ship-sized buildings on the coveted Union Pier property downtown. Instead, make what comes appropriate.

9. Build and follow a 50-year plan. Plan for the county’s long-term future and follow the plan.

10. Pay people more. Pay a living wage. Push South Carolina lawmakers to set a real minimum wage.

State is leader in land conservation

If you’re ever caught in a situation where you need to give an example of national leadership in South Carolina, just focus on land conservation. What we do here is pretty amazing. Some facts to remember:

Lots of forests. South Carolina is home to about 13 million acres of forests– about two thirds of all land in the state, according to the S.C. Forestry Commission. It’s split almost evenly between hardwoods, like oak, and softwoods, like pine. Some seven out of every eight acres of forested land is privately owned, mostly by families who manage forests of an average of 80 acres. Public agencies manage about 12% of forest lands, including more than 90,000 acres of state parks.

Big impact. Forestry is a huge business, generating a total impact of $18.6 billion annually, including more than 90,000 jobs, the commission says.

More acreage. A 2012 forest inventory revealed South Carolina then had 2.3 million more acres of forests than in 1936. Interestingly, there are no areas of virgin forests, indicating man’s impact on the land in recent centuries. Longleaf pine forests, now rare, have generally been replaced by loblolly pine forests. Once dominant chestnuts got wiped out generations ago by a blight. But

softwood and hardwood forests have recovered since Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

So with this background, what’s remarkable in South Carolina is how conservation leaders across the political spectrum are dedicated to conserving land. Why? Because South Carolinians generally agree that protecting land for future generations is important so that people can keep heritage connections with the outdoors.

“We have an ethos in this state,” observed Mike McShane, chairman of the S.C. Conservation Bank. “We are extraordinarily benefited by people in this state appreciating outdoor recreational space.”

The bank, which leverages public money to help preserve land, has spent $244 million since 2004 to fund 470 grants to protect 375,000 acres of land. In the last five years, the bank received $65 million of state funding, which has protected 75,000 acres, two thirds of which provided public access to otherwise inaccessible lands.

“That’s $865 an acre,” said McShane, a biomechanical engineer who lives on Johns Island. “That is an extraordinary metric.”

And the land is protected forever. An example of the merit of the process will be the new Black River State Park. It will snake along the banks of the river from Kingstree to Andrews and allow public access to the river.

“We were losing the ability for communities to access the water as they [riverbank lands] became sold off and

gated,” McShane said. “This park will allow ingress and egress to the river.”

An even bigger success story is the work done by the federal and state governments with private conservation groups and landowners to protect the ACE Basin in the Lowcountry between Charleston and Beaufort counties. When the project started 35 years ago, collaborators dreamed of protecting 90,000 acres of land through purchases, conservation easements and more. Now 35 years later, they have protected more than 305,000 acres of the 350,000 acres in the ACE Basin — a whopping 85% of the wild places in the area.

“It’s a wonderful model because it demonstrates how private landowners and public owners work collaboratively in a public effort,” McShane said.

Now conservationists dream of applying this model around the state to protect even more land — millions of acres above the 3 million acres of land and water already protected in South Carolina. They want to double — even triple — what’s held in trust or used for limited purposes. Will they get there? Who knows? But remember how the ACE Basin model protected more than three times the amount of land it sought to protect originally.

“Remember the adage: You aim for the moon and you might land in the stars,” McShane said.

Spanish moss hangs low over the graves of Magnolia Cemetery, catching the morning sunlight and bringing a haunting beauty to dozens of acres on hallowed grounds on the outskirts of Charleston. Walking through row upon row of memorials, lichen-covered monuments and occasionally rusted fences around family plots pulls visitors back in time. You kind of feel like you’re a spectator in the Savannah book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil — but in Charleston.

A large mausoleum anchors the entrance of the cemetery before its rambling paved and dirt paths spiderweb outward, leading to hundreds of gravesites — some dating back to colonial-era Charleston. The grim quiet is compounded by the serenity of the marsh as herons gently swoop across the still water and the Ravenel Bridge looms in the background against the Lowcountry sky. It’s no wonder why the cemetery, dedicated in 1850, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

In Magnolia and several other historic and picturesque cemeteries tucked behind churches or along the edges of Lowcountry salt marshes lie scores of people who made a mark on history. From statesmen and war heroes to pirates and poets, Charleston has seen more than its fair share of historic burials.

Here is a list of eight people, in no particular order, buried in one of Charleston’s most stirring and beautiful locations, Magnolia Cemetery. It’s open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during daylight saving time. More: magnoliacemetery.net

Julius Waties Waring (1881-1968)

Serving as a federal judge in South Carolina in the 1940s and early 1950s, Julius Waties Waring is regarded by many as a civil rights hero after he concluded that segregation was not only wrong but unlawful. Waring issued a series of decisions attacking Jim Crow laws, including a famous 1952 dissenting opinion about a South Carolina school segregation case that shaped the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1954.

Frank Bunker Gilbreth, Jr. (1911-2001)

Frank Gilbreth, Jr. co-authored the book Cheaper by the Dozen with his sister Ernestine in 1948. The book was an instant hit and has since been re-issued several times, remaining in print today.

This downcast angel honors Lizzie Patrick (1881-1885), who died of scarlet fever when she was 4 years old. The angel holding the cross and wreath suggests the little girl will be rewarded and protected in Heaven.

The Smith/Whaley Mausoleum houses several members of the Smith and Whaley families. It rests in a shady spot amid flowing Spanish moss and Palmetto trees along the back lagoon of the cemetery.

Rosalie Raymond White’s (1882) death mask is one of the most unique child graves at Magnolia Cemetery. She was 7 months old when she died of cyanosis.

Josephine Lyons Scott Pinckney (1895-1957)

Charleston native Josephine Pinckney was a novelist and poet during the literary revival of the American South in the wake of World War I. An active member of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, which transcribed and annotated African American music, Pinckney was involved in several local and institutions devoted to the historic preservation of Charleston, including the Charleston Museum and Dock Street Theatre.

Robert Bentham Simons, Sr. (1888-1971)

A Charleston native, U.S. Navy Admiral Robert Simons, Sr. served on several ships through World War I. He eventually was promoted to the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Raleigh, a cruiser stationed in Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. His ship was struck by a torpedo, a bomb, and more, though it did not sink, earning him the Legion of Merit and other accolades.

Andrew Gordon Magrath (1812-1893)

S.C. jurist Andrew Magrath famously resigned from his seat as a federal judge in November 1860 following the election of President Abraham Lincoln. This move is often considered the first overt step toward secession in South Carolina. Magrath later served as the last governor of South Carolina during the American Civil War under the Confederate States of America from Dec. 20, 1846 to May 25, 1865.

Horace Lawson Hunley (1827-1863)

Horace Hunley was the chief inventor of the H.L. Hunley submarine in 1863, which lost 13 crew members during testing, including Hunley himself. The vessel was raised again, however, in 1864, when it was used in the first successful sinking of an enemy vessel by submarine in naval history. The attack also sank the Hunley herself, and all eight members of its crew died, bringing the Hunley’s total death toll to 21. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery alongside the other crew members of the Hunley.

William Ashmead Courtenay (1831-1908)

William Courtenay was elected mayor of Charleston in the fall of 1879. During his tenure, he made improvements to public spaces, rehabilitated public hospitals and established the city’s first professional fire department. He accomplished all of this while reducing taxes for residents and while combating a major hurricane in 1885 and the Great Earthquake of 1886.

Colonel Robert E. Lee III (1869-1922)

Robert E. Lee III was the grandson of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and a prominent member of Washington, D.C., society. His wife, Mary Middleton, was widowed before her marriage to Lee. Not wanting to tempt fate a third time, she refrained from a third marriage after Lee’s death and was eventually buried with him in 1959 in Magnolia Cemetery.

William Ashmead Courtenay’s (1831-1908) grave is marked with a bust of the late mayor of Charleston. Courtenay’s tenure was marked by historic natural disasters, but longlasting improvements to the city.

James Island offers charm, comfortable community

James Island is just a short drive over an expressway from downtown, a straight route toward Folly Beach and a hop over to Johns Island. But nestled throughout the triangular sea island are wellestablished neighborhoods, comfortable eateries, shops, schools, recreation, entertainment — all of which give residents little incentive to step off the island to find something cool to do.

With a population of more than 35,000 people, James Island has long been defined by its strong sense of community and convenience, dating back to the 1925 development of Riverland Terrace, one of its oldest and most iconic neighborhoods.

Today, Riverland Terrace features not only historic homes and majestic oaks, but also an eclectic array of small businesses that thrive around the easily walkable Terrace Plaza area along Maybank Highway.

Quaint, inviting neighborhood center

It’s not hard to find a friendly face in any of the establishments in Terrace Plaza, including the beloved neighborhood pizzeria Crust, the all-in-one Charleston Flower Market and the Terrace Theater, the Lowcountry’s longest-running independent cinema since 1997.

Paul Brown became owner of the theater in 2010 and is also the majority shareholder of the Terrace Plaza.

“When I got the theater I knew that it was not only going to be a movie theater but it was gonna be a sort of a connection to the community,” Brown said. “It’s been an outreach to the community in various ways and that’s been part of the joy.”

The theater is a local favorite for many reasons. Its retro aesthetic, vast selection of snacks and refreshments, exceptional staff and comfortably worn-in seats. But it also serves as a focal point that naturally draws people to explore its nearby establishments.

“There is a large section of the population that can walk there [the plaza], it’s welcoming, the same people work in the same businesses for years,” Brown said. “It’s very familiar to people — I think that’s what’s key to us.”

Brown said the atmosphere feels like home. When walking in, people are hanging out, just talking.

The area’s vibrant local business scene has played an essential role in shaping its character, an atmosphere that differentiates James Island from its surrounding areas.

“The one thing about James Island as opposed to anywhere else — it seems uniquely different, no matter what the growth is around it,” Brown said. “It always espouses to sort of be its own island amongst islands.”

Island traditions

“James Island itself is unique,” said Raymond Dowty, Charleston native and manager of James Island County Park. “To find a park of this magnitude and with so many diverse offerings on James Island is monumental.”

The 643-acre James Island County Park offers a broad range of attractions, including a dog park, 50-foot climbing wall, disc golf course and water park in addition to amenities like a campground, saltwater fishing spots and an area to picnic and grill.

“Everyone has something personal to them about this park,” Dowty said. “They’ve all connected with it in a different way and for such a multitude of different reasons.”

Beyond everything it has to offer, it’s far more than just a place for recreation. The park is a community staple that locals and visitors alike often visit, again and again.

“People have formed a lot of traditions around our events, spaces and programs and that’s what we want to continue,” Dowty said. “Each person has their own

little experience — we want to preserve that so my kids and their kids can continue to enjoy the park and all that it has to offer.”

The foresight to develop this park is a testament that the community wants to continue to improve, Dowty said. The community values its recreation and green space, one of the island’s charms.

“We want to continue this culture because being part of the community is so much more than just being a park — it’s all these things interrelated,” Dowty said. “It’s that web of connections between us and nature, our neighbors and community — that makes all of it special. If you took one piece out, then the rest of it would lose a little bit of its shine.”

Community spirit

With a bit of searching, you’ll find an array of tasty eateries scattered throughout the island, or even better, right in your own neighborhood.

“We knew right as we were driving to the location to check it out for the first time; It’s completely surrounded by sprawling neighborhoods and that’s where we wanted to be — right there with everyone — our customer base” said Joel Lucas, chef and co-owner of Edison, with his wife Chelsea.

In April, Edison celebrated its seventh anniversary at its location nestled along Fort Johnson Road. The restaurant has established itself as a neighborhood restaurant, with an eclectic menu of global flavors that entices regular customers to return.

“It’s nice to recognize everybody,” Joel Lucas said. “People walk through with smiles and leave with smiles and that’s sometimes

tough these days in the restaurant business.”

During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the couple gained a deeper understanding of their impact as small business owners on the community.

“That was a time where we really noticed that people cared about James Island and really cared about us — they went out of their way to make sure they supported the local restaurants around here,” Joel Lucas said. “It was really a statement by James Islanders and it made us very proud to be a part of it.”

The community’s loyalty extends to its neighbors, establishments and everything that makes James Island what it is.

“There’s a lot of pride,” Chelsea Lucas said. “People who live, grow up here, are born and raised on James Island — are very proud of that. And it’s a beautiful thing to see.”

Every aspect of James Island reflects a deep-rooted connection and community loyalty among its residents for its vibrant community brimming with history, a strong sense of togetherness and the shared pride in calling James Island home.

Fiddlers’ Fire serves elevated street food

After working in fine dining kitchens, including Tempest and Church and Union, chef Tyler Cook knew he wanted to break off and create his own food concept.

“I come from [working in] fine dining, really high level food,” he said. “I wanted to do my own thing — that level but much more approachable.”

And so Fiddlers’ Fire was born.

The open-fire pop-up/food truck concept is inspired by what Cook likes to eat global street food. Presentation and flavor are important to Cook, and he said that diners are already letting him know that he’s offering something a little different than what they may be used to.

“The number one thing we’ve been getting from this is [people saying], ‘This isn’t your typical food truck food,’” he said.

Cook is currently popping up at Munkle Brewing Co. from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays this month (enjoy $5 drafts from Munkle during that time, too) with a full menu as well as $2 roasted Crystal Coast fat belly oysters.

Additional menu items include bulgogi pork belly skewers served with sweet braised carrots, peanuts and coconut curry rice; smoked chili butter poached shrimp rolls; and a jerk chicken sandwich with white sauce, basil and Jamaican coconut bread.

“I didn’t go to school for this. I went to school for finance,” Cook said of his cooking

origins, adding that he’s watched and learned from chef mentors. “I always did my own thing … I like to kind of have fun and push the boundaries of what people think you can do with [ingredients] — because there’s a lot you can do.”

Power of the pop-up

Cook said that he knew his concept was a little different when the health inspectors, checking out his mobile pit room, weren’t really sure how to classify his food truck.

“I thought, ‘I might be on the right track to something cool,’” he said. “I thought this was a way to push the boundaries and kind of get much more intimate with Charleston, then from behind the scenes in a kitchen.

People might love my food, but it’s much different when you’re seeing it being made.”

He appreciates the opportunity to explain menu items, especially his roasted oysters, which he makes taste like chicken — yes, really. Made with chicken skin and caramelized onion butter, these oysters can turn non-bivalve lovers around pretty fast, according to Cook.

“I’ve done very high volume at a very high level, and this is just fun to me. I’m just having fun seeing the reaction of everyone,” he said.

As fun as pop-up life can be, Cook admits that it’s also a hustle. “One to two days of my week is spent scouting new places and trying to get new business … a day in the

week of a food truck owner, especially one like mine [is busy] where I’m going out to farms and picking up my product — all my chicken comes from Keegan-Filion Farm in Walterboro,” he said.

The hustle often proves fruitful, though. Earlier this year, Cook was doing late night pop-ups at Prohibition and he said those nights proved so successful that hungry night owls reached out to him for more Fiddlers’ Fire long after the residency had ended.

Fortunately for evening revelers, Cook is bringing late night Fiddlers’ Fire pop-ups back — this time to popular cocktail bar Dalila’s on Spring. Stay tuned to Fiddlers’ Fire Instagram, @fiddlersfire for updates, but Cook hopes to bring the pop-up to Spring Street most Fridays and Saturdays for late night eats.

You can find Fiddlers’ Fire at the Garden by Charles Towne Fermentory on May 26, June 2, June 9 and June 16; at Munkle on June 8; at Odd Duck Market on June 15; and at Prohibition June 10.

The Loutrel launched a new rooftop afternoon tea service that runs every Thursday through Sunday, now through June 30. Guests can enjoy botanical teas, alcoholic beverages and pastries at Lady Loutrel’s Afternoon Tea . Queen Street Playhouse kicks off summer series with Einstein!

The Queen Street Playhouse (QSP) kicks off its summer theater series with a bold oneman show from Los Angeles, Einstein! by actor and writer Jack Fry.

Fry created the show in 2012 and has enjoyed a consecutive run in Los Angeles and around the country since then (though it’s the first time he brings the show to Charleston). He’s won awards and critical acclaim for his portrayal of an iconic man that goes beyond what the history books say: According to Theater Scene NY, “Fry brings Einstein back from the beyond in this one-of-a-kind show filled with humor, wit and humanity.”

Fry, who has also worked as a teacher, made the show to “give insight into one of the world’s most brilliant minds,” he told the Charleston City Paper. He was coming off of the success of his first one-man show, They Call Me Mr. Fry which was centered around his first year teaching fifth grade in South Central L.A.

“I was looking for another show to do, and I’ve always been sort of interested in metaphysics, different dimensions, that kind of stuff. I’d always kind of wondered what Einstein thought about that — it all started from his quote, ‘We only see three dimensions, but there are at least 11.’ ”

Fry said he became truly fascinated when, in his research, he stumbled upon the story of Einstein’s early life in Berlin, which is full of tidbits and drama that most people aren’t aware of, like his struggles with spirituality, mental illness and his relationship with his wife and three kids.

Showing ‘the human side’

Fry said part of the motivation of this show is to reveal Einstein’s humanity, his struggles and ultimately, his resilience.

“When we talk about important historical figures from our past,” Fry said, “we often think about their accomplishments in the past tense, limiting our ability to truly see them.” To counteract this, Fry uses many perspectives, inventive storytelling and his dramatic abilities as an actor to allow the audience a closer look at Einstein’s personality and life.

Beyond acting as Einstein, of course, Fry also embodies eight different personas during his performance, including moversand-shakers of the then scientific world as well as Einstein’s 10-year-old son Hans.

“This show is Einstein coming back from the past, from the beyond, to set the story straight,” Fry said. “Within that structure are moments that I recreate in the present, to bring audiences into the emotion of the

moment — as opposed to, ‘I did this in 1912, and then I did that.’ It’s, ‘here we are in 1912.’ And everyone’s brought into that moment.”

The show takes us back to Einstein’s early career, starting in 1912 Berlin, when Einstein was on the cusp of his greatest breakthroughs in physics, including his theory of relativity. The world is crumbling around him during this time of “the Great War” (World War I), and Einstein is faced with backlash for his pacifist views. He faces anti-Semitism and issues of plagiarism in the science world.

“While he is trying to prove relativity, his family life — his personal life — is falling apart. His relationship with his 10-year-old son was slipping through his fingers,” Fry said. “The science establishment did not believe his theory of relativity. Those that did wanted to probably steal it from him.”

The emotional height of the show takes place during Einstein’s nervous breakdown which kept him bedridden for two months. “That severely aged him,” Fry said. “There’s a point in the show where, in pure frustration, Einstein shakes his hair out into the crazy, messy thing that represents the Einstein that we all know today.”

Fry said his hope is that audiences can

Greg Elias releases 101 New Songs

VOTED CHARLESTON’S

CLUB

Last July, Greg Elias, under his musical pseudonym “Greg Islands,” quietly made one of the most audacious moves any Charleston musician has made in a long time: He released an album with 101 new songs on it, aptly titled 101 New Songs. It was unlike anything that Elias had ever attempted before. What’s more, Elias is the only musician on 101 New Songs, playing guitar, singing and overdubbing everything else.

If you’re wondering what label put it out, it’s Elias’ own label, Academia Tapes, which has spent more than a decade giving promising young (and often experimental) artists like Max Transmissions, Gracefully Aging Hippy Soloists and Eric Gaffney an inexpensive outlet for getting their material released.

101 New Songs runs nearly three hours, but there’s a lot of variety on it, even with the stripped-down settings and relatively brief song lengths. Most of them start with the unmistakable hum of a cranked guitar amp before a dark, chugging riff sets the tone, but then the tune might branch into a dark, murky and paranoid guitar explosion (“One Of Them”), eerie, sparse, searching ballads (“F.Y.E.”) or a subtle, muted rocker (“Silver”).

A musical challenge

Elias released 101 New Songs physically on a triple-CD set earlier this month, and if you heard the initial version that he posted on Bandcamp last summer, you’re in for some surprises, because even after its online release, Elias continued to tinker with it.

“I got it online about a week after I had finished the last bits of recording and mixing,” Elias said. “But for the first few months, I was still tweaking it. I’d get some

Charleston musician Greg Elias quietly released 101 New Songs, an album containing, you guessed it, 101 new songs

feedback from people and mix things a little differently and upload those on the sly. So if someone downloaded it right away last July, that’s probably a little bit of a different mix than what’s up there now.”

So how, exactly, did Elias come up with such a unique, and challenging, idea? Turns out it started as these things sometimes do: As a joke.

“When I was in my early 20s,” Elias said, “I was playing in some bands with a buddy of mine, and I would ask, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to put out an album with 100 songs on it?’ I would joke around about writing songs really quickly. And since then, it’s

always been in the back of my mind.”

When 2020 rolled around, Elias began to realize that the riffs and song ideas that he’d been storing as voice memos on his phone might be a way to make his project a reality.

“As I was listening back to these parts, I could hear how they might sound if I fleshed them out. So I started fleshing out my guitar tracks that I had done on voice memos with bass and drums, and I got to a point where I realized that if I had 25 or 30 of these songs, I can easily do 30 more. It became conceivable that I could actually do this thing that I

So Elias set up a relatively primitive recording space, grabbed his guitar and hit “Record,” and the ideas started flowing almost immediately.

“When I sat down, it was like I was just dipping a bucket into the stream and pulling stuff out,” he said. “I got to 100 songs. I wanted to keep doing this but I had to turn back, and that’s when a lot of the real work started with adding instrumentation. Writing lyrics was the last phase, and then it was about dressing up the songs and doing the mixes.”

Now that it’s out on a gorgeously appointed triple-CD set (the cover art is an early portrait of King Arthur on parchment surrounded by French text), Elias has been able to look back on what he learned from the experience of recording 101 New Songs in 35 individual sessions.

“I’m hoping that it’s helping me get to the next stage,” he said. “And I feel great about everything that’s come out of it. And it’s the happiest I’ve been playing music in my whole life. Thinking about things a little differently has really opened my eyes to how to make music in a different way and it’s been exciting and fun. I’m just happy to be able to do it.”

relate to Einstein’s struggles, frustrations and tenacity.

“I hope it can inspire [the audience] to do the best they can in their life,” he said. “He had nervous breakdowns, but meanwhile, he came up with a theory that changed the way we all live our lives today. … I think it’s a story that anybody who’s ever wanted to accomplish anything can relate to. Major struggles and obstacles are just thrown in front of you that you have to overcome. Einstein’s story is a story about hope.”

More to come in the series

Also on the summer theater series at QSP is a revival of last summer’s comedy hit, Five Lesbians Eating A Quiche, a subversive, funny and interactive show which sees the audience sitting on stage with the lady sisters at their atomic annual Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein quiche breakfast. (June 4, 5, 6 and 7) And rounding out the series will be the totally awesome Decade of Decadence concert, a live music event celebrating the music and fashion of the ’80s. (June 8 and 9).

Einstein! runs at the Queen Street Playhouse May 26, 28, 29, 30 and June 1 and 2. For tickets and times, visit footlightplayers.net.

Free Will Astrology

ARIES (March 21-April 19): In the coming weeks, you will experience uncomfortable weirdness if you do the following: 1. Meander without focus or purpose; 2. give yourself permission to postpone, procrastinate, and engage in avoidance behavior; 3. ignore the interesting though challenging truths that are right in front of you; 4. hang out with people with mediocre ambitions. But you will experience healthy, uplifting oddness if you do the following: 1. Trust your instincts and intuitions; 2. authorize your spontaneity to invigorate and guide you; 3. take the straightforward path that gets you to the destination most efficiently; 4. be crisp and nimble.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Mysterious energies will soon begin healing at least some of the wounds in your financial genius. As a result, I predict new powers of attraction will awaken in you, making it likely you will add to your wealth in the coming months. To synergize these happy developments, I recommend you give yourself permission to have joyous fun as you lust for more cash. More good news: I will supplement your good fortune by casting a benevolent spell to boost the flow of riches into your bank account.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): When I first got my job writing a horoscope column, I wasn’t looking for it. It found me. My bike had been stolen, and I was looking for a new one in the classified ads of the Good Times, the local Santa Cruz newspaper. There I serendipitously spied a “Help Wanted” ad. The publisher of the Good Times was hiring a new astrology writer to replace Robert Cole, who had just quit. I quickly applied for the gig and got it. Ever since, Robert Cole has been a symbol for me of an accidental and unexpected opportunity appearing out of nowhere. I mention this, Gemini, because when I meditate on you lately, I see the face of Robert Cole.

ally feel it vibrating in your heart and gut. It literally alters your brain chemistry, fortifying your natural talents and attracting needed resources. It liberates you to feel pragmatically excited as you pursue your goal of fulfilling your soul’s code.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): When I was born, my parents gave me the name “Robert.” It’s derived from an Old North French word meaning “shining” and “bright with glory.” In Middle English, though, “robert” was a designation for “a wastrel, a marauder, a good-for-nothing.” I use this dichotomy as a reminder that my own nature is a mix of brightness and darkness. A lot of me is shining and inspirational, but there’s also a part that’s ignorant and confused. And what’s true about me is true about everyone else, including you: We are blends of the best and the not-so-best. Now is a good time to draw strength and wisdom from meditating on this reality. Your shadowy aspects have important and interesting truths to reveal to your brilliant aspects — and vice versa.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Here are some meditations on emotions. They are as key to our intelligence as our thoughts! But it’s crucial that we distinguish between emotions generated by delusions and emotions that are responses to true perceptions. Let’s say I get angry because I imagine a friend stole money from my room while visiting, but then later I put on my vest and find the supposedly stolen cash in the vest pocket. That is a delusional emotion. But if I am sad because my friend’s beloved dog is sick, that is emotion based on an accurate perception. I bring this to your attention, Sagittarius, because I believe it is essential that in the coming weeks you discern between the two types.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): In myths and legends, the consummate spiritual goal has various names: the Holy Grail, philosopher’s stone, pearl of great price, nirvana, alchemical gold, key of life and many others. I appreciate this profusion of sacred symbols. It encourages us to not be too literal about identifying the highest reward. The old fables are equally equivocal about where the prize can be found. Is it in an empty desert or dark forest? In the deepest abyss, on a mountaintop, or in the backyard? I bring these thoughts to your attention, Cancerian, because the coming months will be an excellent time to conduct a quest for the marvelous treasure. What do you need most right now? What’s the best way to begin your search?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): I have good news for any Leos who are devoted to pragmatism and rational analysis. Just this once, my horoscope will offer no lyrical teasers or mystical riddles. Your pressing need for no-nonsense grit has moved me to offer straightforward, unembellished counsel. Here it is, dear: Cultivate connections that will serve your passionate ambitions. Make vigorous use of your network and community to gather information that will serve your passionate ambitions. Meditate on what course corrections might be necessary to serve your passionate ambitions.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): For many of you Virgos, your health seems chronically unsettled. You may be constantly hyper-vigilant about the next glitch that could possible affect your well-being. There’s a problem with that approach: It may intensify your fear of frailty, which in turn saps your vigor. But I’m happy to report that in the coming months, you will have an enhanced power to break out of this pattern. To get started, try this: Every morning for four minutes, picture yourself overflowing with vitality. Visualize every part of your body working with joyful heartiness. Send streams of love and gratitude to all your organs. Do this for the next 21 days.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Many people regard the word “faith” as referring to delusional hope or wishful thinking. But I ask you to rethink its meaning — and consider the possibility that it could be an empowering force in the coming months. How? Imagine a faith that’s earthy and robust. You actu -

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): As an adjunct to the Ten Commandments, I have formulated the Ten Suggestions. Here’s Suggestion #1: Wash your own brain at least three times a year. I’m speaking metaphorically, of course. What I mean is that like me and everyone else, you are always accumulating junky thoughts and useless feelings. Some are generated by our old, conditioned responses, and some pour into us from the media and entertainment industries. And it’s best to be proactive about the toxic build-up — not allow it to become monumental. In my astrological opinion, now is an excellent time for a regular mind cleanse.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): So many writers have said terrible things about our existence on planet Earth. “Life is a disease,” wrote George Bernard Shaw. “Life is a bad dream,” declared Eugene O’Neill. Life is “a vast cold junkpile,” according to Stephen King. There are thousands more of these unnuanced disparagements. Why? Here are the facts, as I see them: As tough as it can be to navigate through problems and pain, being alive in our miraculous bodies with our dazzling awareness is a sublime gift. We are all blessed with a mysterious and fascinating destiny. In accordance with the astrological omens, Aquarius, I invite you to celebrate being alive with extra gratitude and ebullience. Begin the jubilee by feeling amazement and awe for your mysterious and fascinating destiny. Second step: Identify five sublime gifts in your life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the coming weeks, I ask you to refrain from indulging in extreme nostalgia. On the other hand, I encourage you to explore the past and sift through memories with the intention of clarifying what really happened back then. Pluck new lessons from the old days that will help you forge smart decisions in the near future. Use your history as a resource while you redefine the meanings of pivotal events. For extra credit, create a new title for the book you may someday write about your life story.
