It’s the end of an era for roller skaters. Music in Motion Family Fun Center roller rink in Summerville shut its doors for good Sunday night. A rink employee confirmed Monday that the skating facility has per manently closed. Last Thursday, at the rink’s final adult night, skaters zipped along, displaying skills that spanned from spinning and dancing on wheels backwards to apprehensive firsttimers feeling it out. A disco ball spun along with the tunes that weren’t necessarily child-appropriate.Aswordspread the rink would close per manently, skaters unabashedly filmed one another to document their joy and cama raderie as they zoomed around in circles grooving to the beat.

A few months ago, Auburn Fiore, who lives in Knightsville, visited Music in Motion for the first time in 10 years. As a child, she said she visited frequently.

The dynamic of teaching and learning is a big part of the roller skating experience at Music in Motion, others said. “Everybody’s really nice and supportive,” said Nick Velez, who’s been skating regu larly at Music in Motion since February. He has roller skated for about 16 years and used to be an instructor in Southern California before he moved to Goose Creek. “Everybody’s really cool and down to help out,” he said. “If you’re struggling, don’t fear. They’ll help you up. If you have any questions, if you want to learn something, they’re more than happy to show you how to do it. If you’re trying to pop off and be your self, they’re all about it.”

“When I came here for adult skate night, I realized how joyous and amazing the com munity is here,” Fiore said. “While we’re here, we’re all one big community that loves to come together, dance and have a great time. I’m definitely scared of losing a place for us all to gather and bond over roller skating.”

Roller skating as one man’s therapy Summerville native Demont Teneil said he has skated at Music in Motion for 14 years. For him, roller skating is therapy to help navigate career and relationships changes. “I needed something that no one could take from me — and it was skating,” Teneil said. “It’s been my outlet. I just kept going and just kept trying new tricks and it rolled me out of depression.”

Shmeika Hall from Goose Creek said she worked at Music in Motion for almost a year before she left her position as a rink floor guard last “WorkingJune.here was important to me because I was able to teach people how to skate,” she said. “I was able to interact and make skating friends. When I first started skating here, maybe five years ago, it was a very small crowd of adults, but over time it has grown. [The rink] was like a safe place for adults to come and have fun, and I don’t know how we’re going to do that now.”

Roller skating is just as much about congregating as a group as it is the privi lege to have a space to skate, she said. Outdoor roller skating isn’t an ideal option for beginner skaters, she added, because of uneven concrete, blistering heat and rules that prohibit skating at sports courts around the area. “It’s definitely devastating,” Fiore said. “Now all the people that have bonded over this super-interesting talent and hobby,

In the injunction, the state’s five justices granted an emergency motion by abortion providers to suspend the state’s current abor tion law, which was triggered in June after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned federal protection offered by the landmark Roe v. Wade case. The order essentially returned South Carolina to the status quo on abortion in the state before the federal June ruling that turned the matter over to the states. And now at issue is whether state law enshrouds privacy protection that extends to abortion. Also of note in the state Supreme Court’s order:

When an officer walked up to him, he put the can at his feet, dumped it over and said, “It’s empty.” Then he picked it up and turned it upside down and more liquid came out. “I guess not,” he said. He got a ticket for open container.

“For more than six weeks, patients have been forced to travel hundreds of miles for an abortion or suffer the life-altering conse quences of forced pregnancy,” Jenny Black, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, said last week. “Today the court has granted our patients a welcome reprieve, but the fight to restore bodily autonomy to the people of South Carolina is far from over.”

The Blotter is from recent reports filed with Charleston Police Department.

From staff reports As state senators met in a Columbia com mittee room to talk about almost com pletely banning abortion, the S.C. Supreme Court unanimously issued an order Aug. 17 to block the state’s recently triggered ban temporarily on abortions after fetal cardiac activity is detected. That law generally has ruled out abortions after six weeks.

A policeman pulled over a woman Aug. 10 for speeding in West Ashley. The officer found two bottles of vodka in the car. She said they weren’t hers because she’s under 21. He poured out the bottles and gave her a speeding ticket and a court date. At least he didn’t write a note home to her parents.

• Observers say the injunction doesn’t indicate how the court will rule down the road. It highlights how there’s a conflict in the law that needs to be settled.

Even under the expedited schedule, that process could take weeks or, more likely, months,” said a spokesman from Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, one of the plain tiffs. “We expect the process to continue into the fall, during which time we’ll be able to pro vide abortion care to people like we did before the six-week ban went into effect in June.”

• The Supreme Court set out an expedited two-month schedule for abortion providers and the state to file briefs and motions.

“We have a solid understanding of housing needs in Charleston County, and now we’re exploring the tools at our disposal and detailing strategies that will work best for Charleston County residents,” said Darrell Davis, director of Charleston County’s Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Department. “Charleston County is big and complex, and we’re identifying what strategies will have the most impact and sup port throughout the county.” Residents can take the survey at chscp.co/housing-survey or go to the Charleston County Public Library at 68 Calhoun St. down town to fill out a hard copy. The department will host public meetings at several locations in the area to talk about housing needs and receive feedback from the community about the county’s fair housing strategy, which is called “Housing Our Future.” Housing Our Future is the county’s first comprehensive affordable housing plan to address affordability challenges, housing needs and resource programming. It is an integrative approach that connects local officials, community partners and residents with a system to navigate challenges and address ineq uitable housing.

“For beginners, it’s super important to have a roller rink to learn not only because the floor is amazing, but [it] also has skates to borrow,” she said. “Roller skating is not the easiest hobby to just pick up and not having a local roller rink and its community just takes that option away for a lot of people.” Doutaz joined Highrollers in 2010, and she said it was popular up until about 2015 when the group lost its bouting venue at The Citadel. Then Covid-19 hit and roller skating blew up, Doutaz said, so there was renewed interest in Highrollers. After more than a year of searching, North Charleston Coliseum offered the group a space to practice and hold bouts currently. The closest roller derby club for men is in Columbia, she said.

Just drive down Calhoun Street or Hagood Avenue or Line Street or any of dozens of roads throughout Charleston County and you’ll be lucky not to hit your head on your car’s roof.

For all

On top of political incompetence that made many local roads a bumpy rollercoaster, there are more people who live in the Palmetto State. They now drive more road miles on what’s one of the largest state-owned road networks in the nation. More road miles from growth mean more wear and tear, which causes road quality to erode even more quickly than it used to. On top of all of this, in Charleston there are more frequent days of flooding, which further degrades the quality of local roads.

We encourage readers of the Charleston City Paper to download the free Carbin road quality app developed by MIT and send results to city, county and state elected officials. Send data to illustrate how bad your roads are — and demand something be done about it. But with this kind of complaining, you also need to be ready for something else — to pay more in taxes to fix our roads. More than likely, such an investment, shared by all, would quickly pay for itself because you won’t have to replace as many tires ruined by potholes, nails, glass and other trash on the road. Investments won’t be inexpensive. In Charleston County, for example, there are 4,000 lane miles of roads. Local officials are expected to spend the repaving money they have this year to fix (wait for it) 25 miles of roads. Any politicians who want to take on restructuring and how we go about fixing roads would likely have widespread support. So take a broad community hint and get to fixing the problem.

Fix our roads Views

o paraphrase the late New York City Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia, there’s not a Republican or Democratic way to pave a road. And there’s not really a Republican or Democratic way to react about local roads. In interacting with hundreds of people, we found no one who disagreed that our roads suck. It’s time for local and state governments to do something about it — rather than continuing the current structural mishmash of bureaucratized reactions that compound problems. Instead of using a worn government structure set up 90 years ago to channel money and roadwork in a long, drawn out process from the federal government and state to fix roads, maybe the General Assembly should set up a new structure that gets things done more quickly and efficiently. Look at what’s happening elsewhere. It’s got to be better than what South Carolina is doing. Our roads are a mess for reasons far beyond bureaucracies. Problems also stem from decades of deferred maintenance caused by political shenanigans by Republicans and Democrats to keep the state’s gas tax among the lowest in the nation. That caused the S.C. Department of Transportation to be woefully underfunded in dealing with potholes, resurfacing, preventive maintenance and just about anything smart to keep roads smooth.

Darby is right that men need to be present in schools. That’s why I went to a different school this week with my 6-yearold grandson. He entered the first grade at a Charleston County school. I was excited for him while being nervous at how he’d be accepted by his new teacher. When Darby called for men to be more involved in students’ lives, he didn’t single out Black men. However, I am keenly concerned that my grandson is in a public school system where Black boys experience higher rates of implicit bias in the classroom which means White teachers may tend to call on White children more or, because of stereotypes, White teachers also may suspect Black chil dren are more violent.

More men need to get involved with schools

Around the classroom are exercises to encourage good behavior. The teacher wants the 15 students in her class to be responsible, but if they make the wrong choice they aren’t necessarily punished. Instead, they are given a chance to reflect on what they did and how they can fix Goodit.behavior and encour aging words are rewarded with points that can be deemed for special activities. The room has opportunities for interactive learning that stimulates a student’s imagi nation. There is also time to stop, to dance and to sing, acknowledging that children need to move to learn.

North Charleston High School principal Henry Darby is urging men to be more involved in the lives of students as positive male role models. He went a step further and called for them to meet at the school to hear his message that mothers have long been active in students’ lives — and that it’s time for fathers to do more.

I also wanted to learn more about the expectations of my grandson’s teacher and to let her know his family members are partners in his care and education. For this meet-and-greet, my grandson’s White teacher had strung white lights around the dimly-lit classroom accented with pink and blue colors to create a soothing atmo sphere. She invited my grandson to explore the room. One encouraging display was a mental health check list where students would place a heart next to how they’re feeling that day. The choices include “I am great.” “I am okay.” Or “I am struggling.”

The third-year teacher said the room is designed based on her philosophy to make students feel like a family of kind and caring people. She said in this environment students can thrive. I applaud her for staying in a profession where there is a shortage of teachers. I like her, too, because her message of kindness might start to turn around the trend of kids bullying one another. Only time will tell, however, if Papa can stop being skeptical of young White female teachers with young Black male students.

Darby said he was pleased 30 men attended the Aug. 16 meeting, the most he has seen during the first week of school since he was named principal in 2017. The men were also pleased with the response. They’d like to meet monthly. The men represented the school’s diverse enrollment of mostly Black students along with Latinos and Whites.

theytheconnectedwhoTeachersaren’ttocultureofthestudentsserveoftenhaveadifferentinterpretationofthestudents’behaviors.

Black students, who are one-third of the enrollment in Charleston County, are suspended at nearly 10 times the rate of White stu dents, according to data compiled by the Charleston Area Justice Ministries (CAJM). Black students are also arrested eight times more often as compared to White students, CAJM said. I wanted to attend a meet-the-teacher session at my grandson’s school to see his classroom and quietly present myself as that positive and loving male figure in his life. He is an energetic boy with a big imagi nation who is prone to typical 6-year-old behaviors. Unfortunately, typical 6-year-old behaviors in Black boys may get them in trouble more often than their White peers. White teachers often feel threatened by Black boys and girls who often are loud and communal. This is true regardless of the race of the teacher. However, teachers who aren’t connected to the culture of the students they serve often have a different interpretation of the students’ behaviors. Last summer, the district reported that of its 3,500 teachers, 83% were White, 14.6% were Black and 1.5% were Hispanic. Most of the district’s teachers are women. As a result, the chances are slim that a Black or Hispanic student will have a male teacher who looks like them. That’s a statistic that Darby understands.

By Andy Brack I f you’re looking for one thing — just one issue — that virtually everyone can agree on, it’s this: Our roads suck. Their plethora of potholes wreck suspensions. Some are as thrilling — and scary — as roller coasters. Nails, rocks, glass and other trash eat tires, causing Charleston drivers to spend millions of dollars more on maintenance than they “Drivingshould.ondeteriorated roads costs South Carolina motorists $1.7 billion a year — $439 per driver — in the form of additional repairs, accelerated vehicle depreciation, and increased fuel consumption and tire wear,” according to a 2022 report by a national group that analyzes surface transportation. Hundreds of readers on social media complained when asked, “What’s the bump iest or worst route to drive in Charleston?” Some of their answers: “Literally all of them.”

“What’s not the bumpiest/worst route to drive in Charleston?” Responses filled six pages. More will stream in. Now there is data The biggest problem to date with com plaining about roads is that complaints have been anecdotal based on experiences of drivers who have bumped and bounced along their way to work or to shop. There hasn’t really been any accessible, reliable data from drivers to back up systemic complaints. So we went looking for a data solution. We didn’t have the budget for a $700,000 van with lasers to test road quality. At one point, we saw a $200 gadget that could be fitted onto a car, but that seemed kind of a pain if more than one person wanted to conduct tests. Turns out there’s a free app called Carbin. It was developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (yep, the brainiacs at MIT). According to the director of the project, it’s just as accurate as those $700,000 machines and has been used

According to the app’s road quality score based on the commonlyaccepted International Roughness Index (IRI), well-maintained roads have an IRI rating of less than 62 inches per mile, while poor-quality roads have IRI values greater than 128 inches per mile. In the Charleston area, none of the 40+ routes measured by the City Paper scored less than 62. Read that again: None. That means Carbin ranked no roads as having a good quality. More importantly for peninsular Charleston: Every one of the 21 city streets and roads measured scored above 127, meaning that every measurement collected in down town Charleston showed the road was bad. Some good news? Data generally showed better road quality in other areas of the county. Most roads measured in West Ashley, James Island, North Charleston and Mount Pleasant were smoother, scoring IRI ratings between 62 and 127 inches per mile. Translation: These roads weren’t smooth, but they weren’t nearly as horrible as Charleston’s streets. One of the best roadways: The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge over the Cooper River, a road without a roadbed. (IRI score = 74) The worst? Chalmers Street (454), which makes sense because it’s a short, old-timey cobblestone byway. Also bad: Line Street (322), Hagood Avenue (276), Ashley Avenue (243) and Calhoun Street (218). Note: Most of the measurements we made were for relatively short distances as streets don’t go on for miles. We noticed, however, that when Carbin collected data over several miles, scores typically dropped. Most likely that’s because longer routes have long distances of relative smooth ness with intermittent choppiness. Some downtown streets, however, are continually bouncy and don’t have smoothness to round down scores. What public officials say about roads There are two main reasons that Charleston has sub-par roads and streets. First, much of the city is built upon filledin marshland. (It is called the “Lowcountry” for a reason — it’s close to sea level, tides, flooding and shifting ground levels.) That means roadbeds often sink as roads settle, as is the case of the roads and parking lots around Brittlebank Park, the city police station and the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Stadium. They’re built on top of an old garbage dump, which constantly compacts and settles.

“Charleston’s unique topography, soils and weather and unprecedented growth all contribute to continuous wear and tear on This is part of an ongoing series about the big issues that face Charleston-area residents.

“The error between Carbin and laser measurements of the roughness profile is less than 3%,” said professor Franz-Josef Ulm, faculty director of MIT’s Concrete Sustainability Hub. “From an academic perspective, the Carbin algorithm has been published in peer-reviewed journals, which is critical to ensure scientific value of the devel opment. This gives us great confidence ...

“Every road is trashed somewhere in the area! Worst roads ever! As soon as you leave the roads in South Carolina — even as close as the North Carolina border, roads are like night and day. Clean and smooth!” “On Calhoun, on the approach to the James Island Connector, in front of the Children’s Hospital is terrible.”

App’s data illustrate quality of Charleston’s roads

It’s clear, however, that more money will fix more roads. City Paper staffers Samantha Connors, Michael Pham, Ruta Smith, Chelsea Grinstead, Scott Suchy and Andy Brack used Carbin to collect data for this story. Have a comment?

How to use the Carbin app

Over the next few months, the City Paper will profile one bumpy road a week. We’ll share this data with city, county and state officials. We can use your help. We encourage smartphone users to download the Carbin app via the Apple store for iPhone users and Google Play for Android users. Then send us screenshots of your data showing the quality of local roads. Send to: roads@charlestoncitypaper.com Make sure to attach the image with the data. Please include the time of the measurement, the road you measured, where you started and where you stopped measuring.

Jason Crowley, senior program director for communities and transportation at the S.C. Coastal Conservation League, added that Charleston’s potholes repre sented a bigger problem: “This isn’t just about deferred maintenance. It’s also about the fact that our roads are flooding more frequently from high tides and extended rainfall. Prioritizing our stormwater infra structure projects will also help preserve the quality of our roadways.”

Mackenzie Kelley, Charleston County’s pavement manager, added the county’s pavement management system uses sev eral kinds of treatments that allows it to improve more miles of roads than in the past. About 20% of the local budget is spent on preservation which saves $6 to $10 for every dollar spent on preservation.

“We take a lot of pride in always looking for new ways to help extend the life of our roads with new treatment types,” Kelley said. “Charleston County is leading the way in pavement management in not only South Carolina, but also throughout the Southeast.”

. One-time extra funding of $10.8 million is expected in coming months. And how much work will be done? This year, the county anticipates resurfacing and treating 25 miles of road in Ravenel/ Hollywood, West Ashley, Folly Beach, James Island and Mount Pleasant, according to county officials. The number of lane miles in Charleston County? More than 4,000. When asked whether people in Charleston should feel good or bad about the future of Charleston’s streets, here’s what Robbie Somerville, the city’s director of traffic and transportation, had to say: “People should feel good and look forward to improvements of the streets within the city. With the recent influx of federal money and an increase in the state’s gas tax, more funds than ever are being made available for the maintenance of the existing streets.”

Second is the interconnected hydra of funding and the huge road bureaucracy that seems to allow a lot of finger-pointing between agencies. In Charleston, the city controls 53% of its streets, which are gener ally maintained by the county. But the state or federal government controls the rest, many of them major thoroughfares. Both pay into county coffers for repaving, refurbishing and (fancy new term) “rejuvenation” of local roads. According to a county pavement man agement website, the state pays up to $3.5 million annually for local resurfacing proj ects from state gas tax funds. The county used about $4 million a year from sales tax monies for resurfacing projects. More info: charlestonctc.org/pavement.php

Brian added, “Fish don’t have an address.” It isn’t realistic to expect that all seafood you buy will be caught off your closest shores, especially when the demand for fresh fish is so high today, he said.

Luckily for the Tarvins, their good standing with the restaurants they supply helps their retail sales as well. When chefs take pride in their sourcing, they, in turn, educate guests on where to buy shrimp.

“The seafood business has a lot of ripple effects in Charleston, espe cially in the hospitality industry,” Tarvin said. After 10 reputable years, Tarvin raised her prices on shrimp by 15% per pound, and she said the response from her clients was: “That’s it? What took you so long?”

For Cindy Tarvin of Tarvin Seafood on Shem Creek, sustain ability means keeping the traditions of Mount Pleasant shrimping alive while being fair to shrimpers and longtime business partners.

That doesn’t mean everybody who comes in contact with local fish houses understands exactly what they are buying, though.

Diversifying what’s available

When it comes to supply and demand, it really “comes down to whether or not we can give them what they want,” Marhefka said. If somebody requests a certain fish that isn’t currently available, the best that seafood stores can do is offer a substitution. While this might make some retail customers less than satisfied, it provides local chefs with an opportunity to be creative. “I like the fact that I get texted a list every night,” Taimanglo said when speaking about his relationship with CudaCo. “I like theWhendiversity.”thequality and care are present in the processing and salesmanship of the product, people know that they are making the right“Abundantdecision.and Tarvin are both known for their excellent customer service and quality,” said Alex Eaton, executive chef of Estadio. “They make it easy to support [a] local and sustainable business because their quality outshines other distributors. They’re just on a completely different level.”

To James London, chef and owner of Chubby Fish in Charleston, it comes down to “fishing for the future,” which he says ensures that overfishing is kept to a minimum and buying from fish farms should be considered only “when necessary.”

According to Marhefka, demand for fresh fish skyrocketed after the market crash in 2008 when people suddenly needed their dol lars to do the most in supporting not only themselves but their local economy as well.

By Alex Kohel Having a constant supply of fresh fish is integral to keeping many Charleston restaurants open and full of diners. To get the freshest products, chefs and business owners turn to local fish suppliers who have sustainability and longevity in mind. Sustainability in fishing takes on different meanings depending on whom you ask.

Supplying fish — and education — to locals Shrimping hasn’t always been fair to the fishermen themselves and that’s what Tarvin and her team hope to educate locals about. Shrimping in Mount Pleasant plays a major role in the town’s iden tity. Decades of shrimpers came before, and the only hope of con tinuing those traditions is to create and sustain a more long-term interest in the mechanics and personality of the industry, she said.

“She’s amazing and the fact that her entire family has hands in the everyday workings of the business is super important to the way we run our restaurant,” London added. “It’s about more than the shrimp; it’s about how much they care about what they do.”

Tarvin Seafood started selling shrimp to Charleston restaurants thanks to connections from their neighbors Abundant Seafood, owned by Mark Marhefka who began fishing in Charleston as a teenager in 1977. He also runs a family business.

Cindy Tarvin of Tarvin Seafood sells local and regional shrimp to consumers and restaurants

“There’s a lot of people who feel like if it wasn’t caught off Sullivan’s or Isle of Palms or Folly Beach, then they don’t want it,” Tarvin said.

Tarvin’s philosophy is: “Pay the boats better. Pay the people well,” a method she said is working in her favor. Tarvin added, “We figure if we pay more, that forces the other docks to pay more … even at a time when we can’t afford to stay open all day.” While doing so, she keeps her relationships with restaurants at the forefront of her business model.

To meet that demand, Abundant, CudaCo and Tarvin said they import fish and shrimp from surrounding coasts to liven up the market, which helps with sustainability by avoiding overfishing in concentrated areas. This practice also diversifies the type of fish sold, including lionfish, snapper, tuna, tilefish and monkfish.

To others in the industry, such as Shaun Brian, chef and coowner of CudaCo, James Island seafood restaurant and market, sustainability in fishing is aligned with not fishing the same spots constantly, as was the norm in days past. Brian is also adamant that “the biggest issue in seafood is styrofoam,” and he said he is doing everything he can to avoid using styrofoam in his business.

Along the way, Vanessa Harris (Alex’s now wife) joined Alex in this endeavor, and together they crafted a bold mission statement outlining their desire to cultivate a regional epicenter for music lovers, artists of various mediums and other like-minded individuals.

Umphrey’s McGee founding member Ryan Stasik told City Paper. “The [Harrises] basically fostered the beginning of [Charleston-based synthwave project] Doom Flamingo by allowing us to play, rehearse, record and almost live there.” Stasik has performed in the space with Everyone Orchestra, OUKUO, Ross Bogan & Friends, Little Stranger, Pedal Flex and a few“Iothers.alsosaw Sturgill Simpson play there once on a Wednesday before he blew up,” Stasik said. “It was epic. I love the PoHo.” Mike Quinn, arguably the Lowcountry’s hardest working sax man, shares the sentiment.“Ican’ttell you how many venues I’ve walked into as an artist that feel impersonal or even standoff-ish,” Quinn said. “There is nothing worse than feeling like you don’t belong somewhere, especially when you are the entertainment for the evening,” he said. “By contrast, the Pour House is the epitome of a grassroots family business, and I truly feel like a part of that family. I’m pretty sure just about every artist and patron that walks through those doors feels the same.” Quinn’s presence is frequently felt at PoHo through his ongoing work with groups such as Doom Flamingo, Motown

“There is a definite sense that a lot of time, thought and money are put towards the quality of sound and the overall experience of seeing a band there,” The Reckoning’s vocalist/bassist Bobby Hogg said of his long-running relation ship with the PoHo team. “They are constantly making improvements, tweaking the PA, updating and buying new gear — basically taking all kinds of steps to ensure that they are providing the best experience.”

By Kevin Wilson “I cared about live music and knew nothing about the bar business. I was just doing something that I loved and trying to make it,” Charleston Pour House owner Alex Harris said of his auspicious 2002 takeover of the establishment formerly called Pour Hour Restaurant & Pub. The original West Ashley site of the modest operation migrated after a few years to its current James Island location off Maybank Highway with Harris’ reimagined Pour House concept.

Looking around the venue after 20 years in operation, it’s remarkable to see the sort of community the Harrises carefully cre ated and Besidesmaintained.offeringlive music nightly, PoHo regularly hosts markets, yoga sessions, mural competitions and plenty of kid-friendly programming. Throwdown and The Fake News.

Shortwave Kitsch’s The Adventure Begins opens on August 27 at the Flowertown Players with shows at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. For more information and tickets, head to shortwavekitsch.com.

The monthly shuffling of episodes also serves another purpose for Kitsch’s long term goals: making it easier for actors to commit to productions. Leads will stay the same in each series, but then one-off mon sters can be played by any actor at any time.

It’s little wonder that nonprofessionals hold the place in such high regard, too.

Shortwave Kitsch hopes to not only reig nite interest in an old style of theater, but also to bring the Charleston theater com munity together in a new way. They hope the lighter rehearsal commitments and different performance spaces will mean they get to work with talent from all over Charleston.

Pour House CONTINUED FROM PAGE 21

New theater companies are nothing unusual in Charleston. But when a com pany looks to introduce something that Charleston audiences haven’t seen before, that demands attention. Shortwave Kitsch is one such company, bringing a unique production to various Holy City stages. When Shortwave Kitsch officially debuts The Adventure Begins on August 27 at Flowertown Players, it will be the first live radio drama in Charleston. “Probably about six, eight years ago, I was looking for something to do,” said Brandon L. Joyner, actor, writer and one of the four founders of Shortwave Kitsch. “Just something different. I was listening to Thrilling Adventure Hour and Garrison Keelor on Prairie Home Companion. I was like, there’s a space in between this.” Radio drama originated in the early 1920s. Full audio productions, using actors and sound effects, would bring full-length stage plays and original stories to the living rooms of the masses through their radios. Radio drama has found a new life in the podcasting age. Shortwave Kitsch takes it a step further by using that audio performance tradition while mixing in live elements. Audiences in the theater will see two “radio plays,” performed by actors with live music, sound effects and songs. Live performances will be recorded and released as a podcast in 2023. Actors, much like their forerunners a hundred years ago, will be on book. The live shows and the podcast episodes they become will offer very different experi ences for audiences. The physical audience gets a live theater show that is almost a behind-the-scenes experience, complete with the knowledge that they will be a part of a podcast. The radio plays, written by Joyner, try to thread the needle between the bite of Thrilling Adventure Hour ’s irreverent comedy and the folksiness of Keelor. Joyner has written six ongoing series across different genres. Each Shortwave Kitsch show will feature two series, one episode each. The first show features adventure story Call the Lady Physician and sci-fi/spy story Extra Intelligence. Hardboiled detective stories, westerns, murder mysteries, old-Hollywood horror and more are in the works for future Kitsch

“Just like they did in the 1940s, we’re not gonna really have huge rehearsal periods,” Casto said. “We rehearse the night before the show. Although actors know far in advance what show they’re playing in and who they’re playing, all that stuff, but we’ll get together the night before and read through it a couple times. Get out all the kinks, and then the next day is the show.”

“The Pour House was the first venue we befriended when we moved here,” Easy Honey’s co-frontman Selby Austin said. “The level of community is through the roof and they are equally welcoming to artists just starting out as well as legendary figures. I mean, where else could we be soundchecking on the stage inside and watching Phil Lesh tell someone to fuck off before he preps to play with his son’s band on the deck?”

“Probably my all-time favorite PoHo moment, though, was seeing my son play on the deck stage at his guitar teacher’s wedding in front of a few hundred people, including professional musicians,” Torykian said. “I think that was a prime example of the main thing that makes it so special out there: Everyone is egoless and typically sup portive, no matter the level of talent.”

The team came together by reading scripts during the pandemic, and discov ered they had this drive to create these sto ries. A chance meeting through a funeral led to Pedro Toro joining the production as composer and musical director. Toro and Joyner wrote original songs for each Kitsch show, and Toro scored the episodes. Shortwave Kitsch is opening at Flowertown Players, but it won’t live there permanently. The company plans to move around and perform on as many Charleston stages as they can. The hope is to bring these shows to every corner of Charleston. Joyner and Casto are joined by a cast of great local talents. Tiffany Parker Copeland, Michael Catangay, Luciana Marcial-Vincion, Chad Estel, Miguel Rabsatt, Michelle Junga-Murphy and David Joyner fill out the casts for Call the Lady Physician and Extra Intelligence Many of these performers will play recur ring characters in future episodes. With monthly shows featuring two of the six ongoing series, audiences can look for ward to hearing from these characters again and again.

“It’ll be kind of like this beautiful cross-pollination of all the theaters in Charleston,” Rash said. It’s an ambitious project, but one that the team is incredibly excited about. It’s the culmination of nine months of work, and Shortwave Kitsch hopes you’ll come get“Weinvolved.wantto celebrate this with you, and it just can’t be done without an audi ence,” Joyner said. Casto added, “It’s part of the magic of it. The reason we’re making this happen is for our audience.”

The venue built a reputation as a safe, nur turing space for up-and-coming acts from the Charleston area and beyond. Along with Doom Flamingo, alternative acts Shovels & Rope and Easy Honey have also been wel comed in and given the freedom to grow into their full potential at PoHo.

“All we can do is evolve with the times,’’ Vanessa said. “We have a great team and we are always evaluating how we can improve. For me, success is measured by keeping the doors open and creating a dynamic work environment that is beneficial for everyone that has a hand in it. My hope for the future is just more of the same. That’s really all we’ve ever hoped for.”

“The list of acts I have joined on that stage would be hilariously long,” he said. Notably, Quinn has also turned up at PoHo to support Los Angeles-based blues rocker Andy Frasco whenever he needed local musicians to back him up.

Keeping any business afloat for 20 years is reason enough to celebrate. Yet, even with all the exciting birthday festivities planned, the real plan is to keep on keepin’ on.

“We’reinstallments.tryingtorepresent all the genres of yesterday,” Joyner said. Kitsch co-founder Maddie Casto added, “The coolest thing is that each one of us has brought our own strength to the project, which I really love.” Casto is an actor, Kitsch’s social media manager and a singer with her own vintage act, Vintage Vibes. Other founders are: Brooke Rash, the company’s foley artist, and Kristen N. Granet, who manages the business.

“There really is no place like it,” Frasco said of his many visits. “I feel like every time I play the Pour House it’s like going to Thanksgiving dinner but instead of fighting about politics, we’re all preoccupied with getting drunk and laughing and smiling together.”

“For me, seeing live music is about having joy brought into the room,” widelytraveled music fan and local bartender Jim Torykian said. “It’s cliche, but the vibe of the room is Torykian’sinfectious.”manytreasured PoHo memo ries include seeing music legend Leon Russell dancing two feet away from him with Bill Murray and witnessing Andy Frasco turning the place into “a drunken Bar Mitzvah.”
