From the Desk of Principal Robert Miller

Reflecting on this past year, I am incredibly grateful for our St. Paul High School community's strength, dedication, and compassion. In 2021-22, we emerged from experiences none of us could have imagined before March 2020. During the 21-22 school year, we re-established our stability. We worked our way together as a school community through the chal lenges and excitement of a return to normalcy.
The total high school experience reminded our students and staff of those aspects which set St. Paul High School apart from other communities. We remembered special moments together on retreat, lunchtime games and interactions with peers, athletic events, school plays, school-wide liturgies, the annual March for Hunger, and so much more.
Our community took stock of what we value most about St. Paul High School and our mission. Once again, the importance of relationships took center stage. Our relation ship with each other, our relationship with our community and the world, and our rela tionship with Christ are at the center of what makes St. Paul High School special.
As Swordsmen, we continue to pursue and build excellence. While the academic world saw historic declines throughout the country in reading and math, the Swordsmen had a 9% increase in math and an 11% increase in English test scores. Our seniors brought the best of St. Paul to the forefront, with 98% of our graduating seniors matriculating into college and earning over $4.6 million in merit scholarship monies.
Our students work hard, play hard, and lead with courage, compassion, and humility. They continue to build on the foundation of hard work, integrity, loyalty, social justice, family, and God, which our alums have created. We are leaders of all men.
In spring 2022, work began on a 2.5 million dollar campus renovation project. The proj ect would help create a modern aesthetic and ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Through a continued partnership with the Shea Family Foundation, the concrete on our campus was removed and replaced, leaving our campus revitalized. The initial work was completed in early October, and now we are tasked with raising funds to furnish the newly renovated areas around campus to enhance the overall stu dent experience.
I hope that you see how your support enhances the experience of our students, faculty, and staff. You directly impact our ability to Pursue Excellence and Change the World. As St. Paul reminds us, we are all many parts of the same body. You continue to build a foundation of excellence for Swordsmen of the future. I am grateful for this extraordi nary community and your generosity.
With God, Robert MillerTHEN NOW&

Alumnus Of
Jennifer Arthur Perez
Class of 1993
Jennifer Perez, a graduate of the class of ’93, followed in the footsteps of her mother, Susan Christianson Arthur (’67) by attending St. Paul High School along with her sister Deborah and brother Robert. Jennifer was a Varsity Song Leader for two years, celebrated many awards with her team, enjoyed the senior trip to New York and Washington DC with Mr. McNeil, and was selected to be a Christian Leadership Member her senior year.
Many years after graduation, Jennifer met her husband, Michael Perez. They have been married for 22 years with two wonderful sons, both of whom are Swordsmen: Andrew ’19 and Gabriel ’23. Jennifer works full time for TRIMEDX, a biomedical clinical engineering company, where she supports and manages over 30 hospitals along the West Coast.
In 2017 Jennifer sought her first political seat and won! She is one of 5 Councilmembers for the City of Norwalk, and during her term she has served as Mayor from March 2018 to March 2019 and again from March 2020 to December 2021 which was during the pandemic. Along with her full-time job, and being an elected official, Jennifer also serves as a Board of Director for Coast Plaza Hospital and the Goals for Life, a non-profit organization that works with retired NFL players and the youth in our communities, setting goals for their future! One of her favorite associations is the CA Contract Cities Association where she was selected as an Executive Board Member, and the Chair of the Legislative Committee.

Since 2016, Andrew’s freshman year, Jennifer continues to be an active parent at St. Paul High School. She was always available when a sports team needed her, donated food for retreats, and worked to go above and beyond in fundraising in many ways. As a parent, she has volunteered to be a part of the WASC Accreditation Team, assisted with the Pandemic Recovery team and has most recently assisted Principal Miller with several of the current development projects that you are starting to see actualized!
If you ask Jennifer, her favorite time on campus is that spent with the students and athletes. For the past 7 years, she has helped our Ambassador’s Club with the art of public speaking and mar keting our school. As a former Pep Squad Song Leader, cheering on the Swordsmen will always be a top priority!
The Year
Marcel Viens
Class of 1969
A Los Angeles native, Marcel Viens was adopted before his first birthday by a loving couple shortly after they moved to East Los Angeles. The family then moved to Santa Fe Springs where St. Pius X School opened in time for him to attend eight years and then on to St. Paul where he graduated with the class of 1969.

After attending college at Cal State Long Beach and UCLA he noticed his “spiritual phone” con tinued ringing. He answered by studying for the Catholic priesthood in the Archdiocese of New York, attended St. John’s University, and then returned home to study for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He considers those years the most transformative and blessed experiences of his life. Realizing his passions focused on Secondary Education and Healthcare in a Catholic setting, he returned to St. Paul as teacher, atletic trainer, and coach. Beloved St. Paul teacher Brother Otto (RIP) accepted his dare to join the Hospice Volunteer program at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach. Over the past 36 years, following roles with Hospice, Neonatal ICU and Pediat rics, he now serves on the St. Mary Ethics Committee.
He retired early and joined the Jesuits’ Ignatians West Volunteers where “seasoned seniors” put gratitude to work by providing their career expertise and experiences where needed. His years in Catholic education as teacher, administrator, and coach provided wonderful opportunities to make a difference, especially for at risk students and their families.
Following volunteer years in several Catholic schools, he has returned “home” and enjoys his daily routine at his beloved alma mater assisting in development, engaging alumni by managing one of our social media platforms, continuing his research on aspects of our Swordsmen history and traditions, and keeping his Canon camera always at hand to record our events and what he refers to as the greatest entertainment on earth – our wonderful and amazing students!
...Changing the World
One of the most common professions that St. Paul graduates pursue following graduation is a career in education. Countless Swordsmen Alums have purused careers as teachers, instructional aids, administrators and beyond. There’s no telling the impact St. Paul graduates have had on our youth over the past seven decades.
Thelma Melendez Class of 1976
Retired educator Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana ’76 credits the social justice teachings she learned at St. Paul High School for guiding her into a career in education. A successful educational leader with 38-years of experience, including two years in the United States Department of Education (ED) as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education, and five years as Superintendent of Schools of both Pomona Unified and Santa Ana Unified School Districts, she also served as the appointed State Administrator / Super intendent in the Inglewood Unified School District.
Prior to her retirement in December of 2019, Thelma sered as Chief Advisor to Mayor Eric Garcetti on Education and Workforce Development for the City of Los Angeles, and for the last 2½ years serving as Chief Executive Officer in the Office of Educational Services at LAUSD.

Following her graduation from St. Paul, Thema attended UCLA. It was there that she noticed that, “no body looked like me on the (Westwood) campus.” It was then that she realized her calling as she felt a sense of responsibility to provide opportunities for students of all backgrounds. She earned a BA cum laude from UCLA, a Ph.D. from USC’s Rossier School of Education, and received an Honorary Doc torate from Pepperdine University. Dr. Meléndez’s recognitions include an Alumni Merit Award from the USC Alumni Association (2012), the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation’s 2011 National Hispanic Woman of the Year, and Hispanic Business Magazine’s 2010 Woman of the Year.
St. Paul High School provided her the foundation go to college and pursue higher education. Reflecting on the impact St. Paul had on her life, Dr. Meléndez says, “a lot of what we learned at St. Paul about So cial Justice, from teachers like Dan Jiru and the Brothers and Sisters that taught there, inspired me to go into a field that would allow me to make a difference in the world. My educational journey has permit ted me to ensure that teachers around the country can have the support they need to make a difference in the lives of those they educate.”
Thelma currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico with her husband, Otto Santa Ana, who is a retired UCLA professor.
Dr. Monica Melendres Oviedo Class of 1986
Dr. Monica Melendres Oviedo ’86 has been an educator in Whittier Union High School District for more than 25 years, starting as a his tory teacher and currently serving as Whittier Union’s Superintendent (11,221 students), a term that began in June 2022.
Monica graduated from St. Paul in 1986 and returned to teach there in 1990. In 1997, she left St. Paul to teach in the Whittier Unified School District where she spent three years as a teacher before becoming a site administrator for the next 16 years, culminating in two successful prin cipalships at SantaFe and Pioneer High Schools respectively.
She was named Secondary Principal of the year for ACSA Region XV in 2009. Prior to her appointment as Superintendent in June of 2022, Dr. Oviedo served for six years at the Cabinet level.

As Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services she supported the district’s robust profes sional learning efforts, expansion of their Student Well-Being Program, as well as implementa tion of new courses like Ethnic Studies, which will be a graduation requirement beginning in 2030.
Prior to her role in Educational Services, she served as the Assistant Superintendent of Business Services where she oversaw a $175 Million budget and established a $11 Million transportation enterprise fund. In 2019, Dr. Oviedo was selected as ACSA Region XV’s CBO of the year.
Monica credits the teachers at St. Paul for instilling a desire to help others. She says, “as a stu dent, Mr. Dan Jiru was the teacher that made the greatest impact on who I am and how I lead; his commitment to service, compassion, empathy and social justice are ideals I strive to emulate in my personal and professional life.”
She is also grateful for the amazing colleagues at St. Paul who she had the pleasure to work with including Mary Anderson, Susie Rosales, and especially Monsignor Robert Gallagher. “It was Father Gallagher who saw my leadership potential and planted the seed to consider school ad ministration.”
While teaching at St. Paul, Monica met her husband, Robert ‘82. They have two sons, A.J. and Josh, both of whom are currently educators in southern California.

Lilia Dominguez Bozigian Class of 1989

Lilia Dominguez Bozigian ‘89, known to colleagues and students as “Lil lyBo,” began her teaching career at Roosevelt High School in 1995 before moving to the Whittier Union High School District in 1997 to teach at Pioneer High School.
While at Pioneer, she quickly moved up the ranks serving as the school’s GATE/Advanced Placement coordinator, assistant principal, and in 2016, was named the school’s principal.

At Pioneer, Bozigian instituted a culture of academic rigor and success by providing all students with open access to courses and removing bar riers to learning.
As a teacher and coordinator, Bozigian established Pioneer’s Advancement Via Individual Deter mination (AVID) program, and the school was designated as an AVID National Demonstration School in 2017. Pioneer was named a California Distinguished School by the California Depart ment of Education in 2021.
After serving six years as principal at Pioneer, Bozigian was named Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services in 2022. As Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, she plans to continue the district’s focus on English learners and maintain Whittier Union’s high achievement levels.
Following her graduation from St. Paul in 1989, Lilia earned her Bachelor of Arts and Letters in English from California State University, Los Angeles, and her Master’s in Educational Leader ship from California State University, Fullerton.
She credits her 9th grade English teacher, Mrs. Heckert, and her Physics teacher, Sr. Mary Paul, for inspiring her to server others. Lilia says, “Mrs. Heckert modeled what it looked like to love one's profession but, above all else, those you teach. Sr. Mary Paul had a passion for science, students, and Jesus. She had the unique ability to engage high school students and make learn ing fun. These women are the foundation on which I have modeled my teaching and leadership abilities.”
1982
Ann Fitzgerald ‘82, began her teaching career at La Serna High School in 1994 and spent nine years as a teacher before she was promoted to the position of assistant principal of curriculum and instruction in 2003.

Under her guidance, La Serna students experienced tremendous success helping to get more than 70% of the student body to meet college entrance requirements and helped raise the school’s graduation rate to 98%.
As a result of her dedication to the students she served and her commitment to excellence, Ann was named the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 15 Principal of the Year in 2019 for her outstanding innovation and leadership in the educational environment.
The Class of '61 held their Covid delayed 60th (61st) Reunion on Saturday, September 11, 2021. This class was the second graduating class at St. Paul. The class had a great night sharing stories, memories, and they've still got that great Swordsmen Spirit. It was a grand affair and they're al ready planning their next gathering, possibly out to sea! Congratulations and God Bless our '61 Swordsmen - you still ROCK!

The Class of 1972 held their 50-year reunion over several days with a golf tourney, cocktail party at St. Paul, reunion/dinner, and then a night at the O.C. Fair. It was a wonderful series of events and a great reunion of an awesome class of Swordsmen.

The Class of 1986 hosted 50 guests of their class, and managed to raise $3,500 dollars worth of emergency scholarship funding to celebrate their 36th reunion!

If your class is planning to hold a reunion and would like to consider holding it on campus, please email Libby Lafferty at llafferty@stpaulhs. org. The backyard of the Franciscan Center can accomodate about 120 people. You may also apply on our School Website at: Stpaulhs.org/nav-header-utility/alumni We look forward
