This striped animal is actually more closely related to a giraffe than a zebra, despite its appearance. It lives in the North-eastern Ituri Rainforest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where illegal mining and logging pose the greatest threat. Although it's unclear how many are still roaming free, it's estimated that their population has decreased by half over the past three decades. FFI is observing and studying these animals in their forest habitat using video traps to better understand how to protect these species.
These social sharks thrive in tropical mangrove habitats, such as the woods off the coast of Cabo Verde. These waters serve as an essential haven and breeding ground for the lemon shark. Fishing, where bycatch is a common occurrence, and clearing mangroves to make room for coastal development and aquaculture pose two big dangers to these sharks.
