FOREWARD

From the beginning of time the plan of God for His people was for them to have fellowship with Him. We see in Scripture that it was for the purpose of praising God that mankind was created. When Jesus ascended into Heaven, He left His followers with the promise that He would send the Comforter. On the Day of Pentecost, the full earnest of our inheritance came in the form of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit as the disciples of Jesus Christ who had gathered in Jerusalem in an upper room, became the first group to receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. The whole would be impacted by those who were endued with this Power from on High.

Gerald Archie and Vesta Layne Magnum

Centuries later, many had mistakenly adopted the idea that receiving the Holy Spirit in the manner that 6

the disciples of Jesus Christ did on the Day of Pentecost was a thing of the past. Thankfully, some vehemently disagreed with that ideology. On January 1st1901 that changed forever when believers received the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues just like the disciples in the New Testament. This launched the greatest period of growth in the History of the Church.

Sister Verbia Rowe, Bishop Glenn Beecher (G. B.) Rowe, Sister Ida Haywood, Bishop G. T. Haywood and Unknown. In the back is a man who was referred to as “uncle Jack”.

Today, more than 5 generations later, the posterity of those early 1900’s Christ followers’ number in the hundreds of millions with some 25% of the worlds Christians believing in the baptism of the Holy Spirit!1 631 Million Pentecostals in 2014! Inevitably, Pentecostals will exceed 1 Billion worldwide! The flow of events is outlined in this historical timeline.

Dedication To the Life and Ministry of Bishop Raymond Oscar & Ruth Cornell, founding Pastors of Apostolic Faith Church of God (1930-1971) 2030 W.55th Street, Cleveland Ohio. Bishop Ray Cornell served as District Elder in the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ (PAJC) (1931-1945). District Elder in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) including hosting the 1948 National Convention (1945-1954). Bishop and 1st Chairman of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ (PAJC) 1955-1971. The Cornell’s faithfully served, providing a church family to thousands including this author’s Grandparents, Bishop George Arthur & Lois Ethel Wade, George & Olive Ann Gillespie and parents Bishop Sanford Lee & Georgia Ann Wade. The Cornell’s pastors were Bishop Glenn Beecher (G. B.) & Verbia Rowe who founded churches in Ligonier, Bourbon, Plymouth, Shelbyville, South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana. In 1920, the Rowes planted what has become one of the most powerful and influential Pentecostal churches in the United States - Midway Gospel Tabernacle, in Mishawaka, Indiana (Now Apostolic Temple). Bishop Rowe was selected as one of the first five original Bishops of the P.A.W (1925). He also labored as an evangelist, scholar, singer and writer. Bishop Rowe became the lead Bishop at the death of Bishop G. T. Haywood (1931) and spearheaded the merger between the AC of JC (Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ) and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) that merger resulted in the creation of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ (PAJC) (1931-1945). In 1945 the PAJC merged with the PCI to become the United Pentecostal Church (UPC). Bishop Rowe served on the first Board of the UPC (1945-1948). Later, Bishop Rowe contributed to the fledgling IMA (International Ministerial Association (1954-1963) and led the Oneness Ministers Association (1950). To the Life and Ministry of Charles Fox & Sarah Parham who became spiritual parents to all of us who are spirit filled. To the Life and Ministry of A. J. Tomlinson who, like the Parhams, stood the test of cultural bias to offer the world a vision of the Church of God that truly represents the people of the earth just as Apostle John saw: After this I beheld, and, see, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands. (Revelation 7:9 King James 2000)

“I look upon all the world as my parish; thus far I mean, that, in whatever part of it I am, I judge it meet, right, and my bounden duty to declare unto all that are willing to hear, the glad tidings of salvation. This is the work which I know God has called me to; and sure, I am that His blessing attends it. Great encouragement have I, therefore, to be faithful in fulfilling the work He hath given me to do. His servant I am, and, as such, am employed according to the plain direction of His Word, ‘As I have opportunity, doing good unto all men’; and His providence clearly concurs with his Word; which has disengaged me from all things else, that I might singly attend on this very thing, ‘and go about doing good.’”

January 24, Jack Moore, Gordon Lindsay, Ern Baxter, and F. F. Bosworth join William Branham in Houston at the Sam Houston Coliseum. The meetings grew, gathering as many as 8,000 people in a single service. It was here that the photograph of Rev. Branham with a supernatural halo of light above his head was taken. This event caused a great deal of controversy with some calling it a “Pillar of Fire”. Branham’s people claimed it was real but many others denied its authenticity. Experts claim it was merely lighting and camera related. Today, people worship this picture and image. This type of manifestation was part of the mysticism invoked in Branham’s ministry. There was always an emphasis on angelic visits, meetings with ‘spirit guides’ and other unbiblical manifestations and phenomena.

January. US Congressman William Upshaw, who had been crippled for 59 years as the result of an accident, said he was miraculously healed and had regained the ability to walk in a Branham meeting, further fueling Branham's fame. Upshaw sent a letter describing his healing claim to each member of Congress. Among the widespread media reports was a story in the Los Angeles Times that described it as "perhaps the most effective healing testimony this generation has ever seen". Upshaw died in November 1952, at the age of 86. Sadly, this “testimony” has come under great scrutiny. William Upshaw was a notorious member of the KKK. The “testimony” seems like another ploy to prop up the KKK’s favorite minister.

June 4, 1951. Alexander, now in Bible School, was still in prayer outside in fields long after midnight when he sensed a strange feeling of something pressing down upon him, a great light surrounding him and a heavenly being enfolding him. The boy was terrified and fled back to the Institute.6 The heavenly visitor entered the Institute with him, and in a few moments all the students were awake with the fear of God upon them. They began to cry out in repentance as God by his Spirit dealt with them. The next day the Spirit of God came again upon Alexander as he was given prophecies of God's moving in far off countries. The following day Alexander again saw the Lord in the Spirit, but this time

he began to speak slowly and distinctly the words he heard from the angel of God. No one could understand what he was saying, however, until another lad named Celsio (with even less education than Alexander), overcome with the Spirit of God markedly upon him, began to interpret. These communications (written because he choked up when he tried to talk) were a challenge from God to pray and indeed the Institute became a center of prayer till the vacation time, when teams went out to preach the kingdom. It was the beginning of new stirrings of the Spirit across the land. The Bible Institute continued in prayer for 4 months, 8-10 hours a day, weeping. Bricks became saturated; one young man prayed against the wall daily, weeping. After 6 hours the tear stains reached the floor, and after 8 hours had formed a puddle on floor. The Lord gave them prophecies of revival in Argentina and around the world. They were told the largest auditoriums would be filled, and this happened with the visit of Tommy Hicks to Argentina.7 1951

The Apostolic Faith Alliance (founded by Charles Parham) meets in Spearman Texas to discuss challenges primarily dealing with the growing Latter Rain Bishop A. F. The older Apostolic Faith members are not receptive of the methods of these new Pentecostal “healers”. The rift ends with younger ministers including Robert Parham’s widow Pauline leaving. The group of 136 ministers and 83 churches divided nearly in half.12 Today, they remain headquartered in Baxter Springs with 109 ministers and about 50 churches.13

It only took Howard Goss 6 years to make many of the UPC members his opponents and they repaid him by voting him out of the all-white group he has invested his life to craft. Like some (i.e., B. H. Hite’s widow, Bishop G. B. Rowe, Diamond A. Nobel, just to name a few) who Goss had railroaded out of the UPC, the official UPC ‘party line’ was that he “retired”. Some expected him to join back with the AG. In some measure he did.14

Rex Humbard in Akron, Ohio, begins his televangelist program which will continue until 1983. At one time Humbard will have the largest network of television stations that carry a religious broadcast in the United States. His success in the new medium of television helps to build a "Cathedral of Tomorrow" at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Humbard recounts that he was inspired to go onto television while standing outside of O’Neil’s Department Store in Akron, Ohio. People were huddled around a television, marveling at a Cleveland Indian’s game. Humbard, an Arkansas evangelist passing through town, felt called to become the evangelist to spread the Gospel via television. Humbard purchased an old movie theatre in Akron, christened it Calvary Temple, and began broadcasting. 1951

Chile / Argentina. Tommy Hicks was involved in revival in Latin America. In 1952 he was conducting a series of meetings in California when God showed him a vision. While he was praying, he saw a map of South America covered with a vast field of golden wheat ripe for harvesting. The wheat turned into human beings calling him to come and help them. He wrote in his Bible a prophecy he received about going by air to that land before two summers passed. Three months later, after an evangelistic crusade, a pastor's wife in California gave that same prophecy to him that he had written down. Cash began to arrive till he had enough to buy a one-way air ticket to Buenos Aires. On his way there after meetings in Chile, the word Peron came to his mind. He asked the air stewardess if she knew what it meant. She told him Peron was the President of Argentina. After he made an appointment with the Minister of Religion, wanting to see the President, he prayed for the Minister's secretary who was limping. He was healed. So, the Minister made an appointment for Hicks to see the President. Through prayer the President was healed of an ugly eczema and gave Hicks the use of a stadium and free access to the state radio and press. The crusade was a spiritual breakthrough.18

condemning the Revised Standard Version of the Bible. The General Conference opposed the RSV Bible because “ many passages concerning the fundamentals of our Christian faith and doctrine have been changed and are very misleading, namely, the virgin birth of Christ, remission of sins as taught in the New Testament, the deity of Christ, and other truths.” Furthermore, the church denounced the translators of the RSV as “modernists and liberal scholars who do not believe or embrace the revealed truths of God’ s holy Word.” Church members, it declared, should use the King James Version of the Bible, because it was the most accurate translation.28 1953

Bishop S. N. Hancock, along with other members of the PAW Executive Board, signed an affirmation of the Oneness doctrine. Bishop George A. Wade is the General Secretary. Black ministers and women ministers are encouraged to join as ministers. This effort to re-organize began in August of 1946. This reoranized effort expects (and for many years achieves) where both the UPC and the PAW failed. That is to exist; as a multicultural organization. The UPC was organized as an all-white organization and while not organized that way, the reorganized PAW would adopt a offended posture toward other ministers that would steer them to become an all-black organization.

June 11-15. Among William Branham's emulators was Jim Jones, the founder and leader of the Peoples Temple. According to Historian Catherine Wessinger, while rejecting Christianity as a false religion, Jones covertly used popular Christian figures to advance his own ideology. To draw the crowds he was seeking, Jones needed a religious headliner and invited Branham to share the platform with him at a self-organized religious convention held at the Cadle Tabernacle auditorium in Indianapolis. Wildly, it was reported that Jones called Branham a “dishonest person”.

most anointed, spiritually charged, emotionally moving service that many delegates had ever witnessed. That Friday night the atmosphere filled with excitement and joyful praise as Bishop Carr summoned Elder Saunders, Elder Dunn and Elder Watson to the altar to be consecrated as Bishops. The congregation wept with tears of joy during the ordination ceremony. The three young elders approached the altar slowly; simultaneously they fell prostrate on the floor before God and before the presiding prelate Bishop R. A. Carr. The three young men arose after the consecration with the official title Bishop Monroe Saunders, Sr., Bishop Sydney A. Dunn and Bishop John S. Watson. The brethren received them with thunderous applause, hallelujahs and praises to God.40 1957

January 1, 1958, in Phoenix, Arizona, Urbane Leiendecker, a recent convert, approached Allen and offered him 1,280 acres (5.2 km2) of land in Arizona.[21] This property, later expanded, was then named "Miracle Valley." As such, it served as the ministry headquarters for A. A. Allen Revivals, Inc. This location housed Miracle Valley Bible College and its dorms and classrooms, a domed church, administrative buildings, a large warehouse, a residential neighborhood called Miracle Valley Estates, a publishing and printing plant, a four-press phonograph record plant, and Miracle Valley Fellowship, which served as a ministerial fellowship with about 10,000 ministers as members.[14] In spite of the presence of its own print shop, however, Miracle Valley's business manager Gerald King said in 1969 that the ministry spent $27,000 per month "farming out" jobs to other print shops that could not be handled on site.44

A. A. Allen was arrested in 1955 for suspicion of drunk driving after a controversial incident in Knoxville, Tennessee. Allen resigned from the Assemblies of God shortly afterward.[11] After paying the fine without contest in order to avoid terminating his Knoxville meetings which were then in progress, Allen was re-ordained by his "Miracle Revival Fellowship."[3] Allen's associate Don Stewart claimed that Allen was occasionally drunk after Knoxville, and that his staff covered for him.[12] Allen continued the revival circuit, and in 1958, he purchased a tent that could seat over 22,000 (the tent was the one used by evangelist Jack Coe up until his death in 1956). Allen became one of the first evangelists to call poverty a spirit and believed in God's ability to perform miracles financially. At his peak, he appeared on fifty-eight radio stations daily, as well as fortythree TV stations.

Branham first spoke about original sin; he rejected the orthodox view of the subject and hinted at his own belief in a hidden meaning to the story. Branham may have become acquainted with serpent's seed doctrine through his Baptist roots; Daniel Parker, an American Baptist minister from Kentucky, promulgated a similar doctrine in the mid-1800s. According to Pearry Green, Branham's teaching on the serpent's seed doctrine was viewed by the broader Pentecostal movement as the "filthy doctrine ... that ruined his ministry". No other mainstream Christian group held a similar view; Branham was widely criticized for spreading the doctrine. His followers view the doctrine as one of his greatest revelations.
