This Guidebook explains each of the 11 Principles that form an evidence-informed framework designed to cultivate a comprehensive and sustained culture of character in your school. The very first version was published ni 1996 as a peer-reviewed article in the Journal of Moral Education. Soon after, the Board of Directors at Character.org adopted the 11 Principles Framework, and ever since we have actively shared the importance of the Framework with teachers and school leaders across the world.'
At the core of the 11 Principles Framework is the premise that character development - for all ages and grades - extends far beyond character lessons or a designated class. Rather, a comprehensive and sustained character initiative needs to be intentional, involve al school stakeholders, and be woven into all aspects of the school's culture, teaching, and learning.
