Welcome to #LIF19

We would like to thank LeedsBID and Leeds City Council for their continued support. We feel we have a festival the city can be proud of and one that is as inclusive as possible, whilst shining a light on food being culture and culture being food.

This year we wanted to bring some form of celebration and outdoor theme and build upon the sustainability themes from last year. What you can expect is more collaborations, more new people ( OWT, Moortown Supper Club, Jane Lawson to name a few), the new Leeds Indie Cocktail hours, which aims to bring Leeds’ ace bars properly into the festival for the first time, and more collaboration menus. Let’s get more people working together and creating these one-off events.

We aim to launch the Leeds Indie Food Fund and the Indie 500, whilst also working towards a longer-term dream - the ‘Leeds Indie Food Factory’ - a real space, year-round, which could offer so much.

We’re super-proud to empower and encourage our Leeds indies, and we think what they’ve put together for LIF this year shows real imagination. Here’s to #LIF19!

This is our big 5th Festival, can you believe it? We have so many memories to share and new ones to make. This year we had so many colour combinations to pick from. We went big and bold on colour - partly because we’re going big and bold on LIF’s future.

Become a LIF Patron

LIF PATRONS This year we have introduced the LIF Patron scheme, as something of a trial year. This is an annual subscription, in which you’ll receive the LIF passport - but also lots of other goodies.

We want people to get more out of their indies, year round, and not just during LIF season in May. We also want to encourage Leeds’ amazing foodies to support indies year-round, and not just during the festival, for festival offers and deals. We’ve priced the Patrons scheme intelligently, so you get lots of bonuses (plus eight free beers at #EatNorth, for a start!) but also support indies. We’re excited to see where this can take food in the city.

Leeds Indie Food – Future Next up as part of this year’s festival we’ll be launching the Indie 500 Club, a brand new B2B network for the independent food and drink producers and purveyors of Leeds. This was designed not only as a network but as a thank you and reward for all the hard work and effort that independents put into building some of the most unique and desirable dishes in the UK today; but the Indie 500 Club has a serious side too.

We want to support those businesses who have come this far with us to take the leap to the next level, scaling up, expanding and growing their business. Indie 500 Club members will have access to discounts on industry knowledge events such as beer and wine training from some of the best in the business; inside access to some of the biggest entrepreneurs in the industry from across Europe at the annual Indie 500 Club Lunch; and exclusive access to the Leeds Indie Food Fund – our next big venture!

The future of food is here, and we are unbelievably excited to share our plans with you throughout this year’s festival, but for now here’s a sneaky little taster.

We’ve already announced our Patrons Scheme for those of you who have a year-round hunger for hospitality bringing you exclusive deals, updates, guest passes, free beer at Eat North and of course the all-important shiny new pin badge.

With Leeds Indie Food Fund we will create a no-strings-attached grant fund that will help the Leeds independent food and drink scene continue to punch above its weight. The fund will support the entrepreneurial spirit of the independents, developing and testing new ideas, reaching new audiences, scaling up some of our best-loved eateries, bars, restaurants and pop-ups, and building an international culinary reputation for Leeds.

Leeds Indie Food Factory is a bold ambition to create a venue concept like no other: a test kitchen and development centre for new food and drink start-ups; a sustainable food production facility pushing the boundaries of innovation and technology; a community kitchen and education centre bringing our communities and cultures together to break

bread daily; a support and advice centre dedicated to start ups and scale-ups in the food and drink sector; and not forgetting an open and welcoming events space and venue which will act as a festival hub for our annual festival of fodder.

We are culinary connoisseurs, on a mission to make Leeds the go-to city for gastronomy. By 2023, we want to have created a focal point for food in Leeds. We want to support the next wave of startups, bring communities together around a food-laden table, offer support for the next generation of chefs, sommeliers and publicans to help them take the leap - all so that together we can push the boundaries of food innovation and welcome food cultures from all over the world, all under one (preferably green) roof.

Eat. Our main category. We love eating and 2019 is no different.

We have some special #EatNorths with the first ever #SeaNorth and the popular #VeganNorth both during the festival.

The first event to sell out this year was Laynes x Wayward Wine, but we have been promised walk-ins will be available (pg 17).

Food For Thought is a series of dinners with themes ranging from food waste and ethical food to food fads and food poverty. We can’t wait to see these. We have plenty of vegan options and not just vegan junk but plant-based dinners (pg 62).

Meat lovers unite at Sheaf Street (pg 19), and the Latitude Tasting Rooms visits Ox Club (pg 18) this year.

We've got collaboration menus aplenty this year (including Whitelock's Yorkshire Pudding Wrap specials, Tapped doing pizza collabs and many more), and Taco Tuesday is back (be warned - this sold out by 8pm last year)!

Lastly, the Bloody Big Brunch comes to Leeds (pg 59)!

Bundobust are taking over Below Stairs to create a Bombayinspired speakeasy (pg 38) whilst the bubbles will flow at the Pizza and Prosecco Festival, too. Swapping alcohol for caffeine, Echelon and Laynes are doing great things together, and flying the Leeds flag for great coffee. The list goes on.

This year, the Drink category has expanded. That’s partly due to our idea of bringing in the bars, by launching Leeds Indie Cocktail hours, which will feature all sorts of great Leeds drinking establishments. We have some new beers being brewed (Little Bao Boy), and Kirkstall Brewery making some specials to go alongside LIF events. The North Bar Mystery Bus Tour is back, too (would it even be LIF without it?!) and we have cake and cocktails events (pg 35), beer paired with cheese and cake (pg 44), and the Grape Debate (pg 38) amongst others!

Probably one of our strongest Do categories yet. This year we have stellar special events, from the three night sold-out Harry Potter dinner (pg 23 & 28), to The Grand Budapest Hotel cake and coffee night (pg 35) to the Pulp Fiction experience at Hyde Park Book Club (pg 60).

Once again, Cafe 164 and the Gallery are onboard for the LIF vibe. The Chef’s Hands project

by Joakim Blockstrom will be on display at the gallery, and their Hands On Sensuality event (pg 27 & 29) promises to be a real one-off.

We have food photography workshops (pg 34 & 37), seitan making workshops (pg 36) and a forum for small businesses (pg 42). We’ve even got gateau and biscuit decorating classes (pg 27 & 17). Foraging and sustainability are once again LIF staples (pg 56), and Perfecting your Palate (pg 20) promises to help you get the most out of your mouth!

Leeds Indie Food pal Little Bao Boy are pretty good at cooking with beer... but how good are they at brewing it?

The bar team from the new North Brewing Co. Taproom on Sovereign Square and the dumpling slingers are teaming up, to make their own awesome beer for Leeds Indie Food, launching on opening night.

Thursday 9th Plants Styles x Laynes (All vegan, all good.)

Plant Styles are bringing some taste-good, feelgood vibes to the festival with an all-vegan evening at Laynes. This creative sharing menu is here to celebrate plant-based food in all its forms, and once again illustrate how much diversity, satisfaction and damn-good flavour there is in an all-plant diet.

Come along and get the chance to indulge in authentic Persian flavours, like smoky aubergine dips, beautiful steamed saffron rice, herby salads, and layered rice dishes, aromatic slowcooked stews and plenty, plenty more, all served as sharing platters. Spend an evening out, but take hints home to inspire your own cooking too; Afsaneh is passionate about Persian cooking and will give you lots of tips and recipe advice to try at home.

Jane Lawson Loves will be preparing a 4 course vegan dinner in the beautiful surroundings of The Little Bookshop in Chapel Allerton. Taking influences from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours, expect delicious plates packed full of flavour, great music and perhaps some inspiration to bring more plants to your own menu. The evening will feature Ralph Lawson DJing a rare selection of laid back grooves to accompany the food.

Master biscuit bakers Bloom Bakers are opening the doors of their home bakery for the first time and will be hosting a biscuit decorating workshop with a ‘garden party’ theme. Here we have a celebration of the great outdoors, of creativity, and of awardwinning local food. For one night only, Bundobust is looking back to its origins, winding back the clocks five years and returning to where it all began...as a collaboration between Sparrow Bier Café and Prashad.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock you will know that Meanwood is packed with indie heroes. So once again, Alfred’s have teamed up with a host of local favourites to present the Dinner Box: a four-course celebration of all things Meanwood.

Another classic North Bar event and another festival classic. North Bar’s beer and doughnut pairing extravaganza is 100% back!

Teaming up with local hero and cake extraordinaire Liz, who runs the Porterhouse Cake Co., this event is a curated menu of four mini doughnuts, matched with four different beers. Expect both sweet and savoury, with some unusual flavour profiles...plus ace beers alongside!

Join us at our lively little bar in Farsley and meet the wonderful folk from Seagulls Reuse for some sustainable activism! Once completed, the mosaics will be taken to Seagulls gallery in Kirkstall to be displayed in a public exhibition on Saturday 25th January. It’s a takeover! Newcomers Echelon Coffee Roasters only started in January of 2019, but Ben Craggs and his coffee have already been seen in many of the city’s top coffee shops. Laynes Espresso will be serving up Echelon in a ‘bar take over’ for both espresso and filter coffee drinks, with Ben himself on site, pulling shots and brewing pots, all the while fielding any and all questions you may have about the process of buying coffee, roasting it and making it taste..

A beer and food pairing evening with added sausage meat, pastry and a dash of (light-hearted) conflict.

Keep the good times sausage- rolling.

Tandem transforms once again, this time into Hogsmeade’s favourite inn, providing muggles once-in-a-lifetime access to a wizarding wonder!

Hands on Sensuality is a heightened, sensory, pleasure-inducing night combining food and sensuality.

Get in touch with your inner-bake off champion to decorate a celebration gateau that Mary Berry would be proud of. Using fresh ingredients sourced from within Leeds Kirkgate Market you will spend two hours learning how to decorate a 7-inch sponge cake. In the process of creating your chocoholic confection you’ll dabble in truffle making, chocolate work and icing/ piping work. Afternoon Tea-style refreshments are included.

In something of a festival tradition, Whitelock’s will close the final Sunday of #LIF19 with another supper club, set in the dining room of Leeds’ oldest pub. Popular during the 1930s and 40s, supper clubs were often the centre of social networks, with an informal dining setting and exciting set menu as a talking point. Join them as their Head Chef Chris Dennett designs a 7-course tasting menu, showcasing some of the freshest fish, shellfish and seasonal vegetables available throughout the county of Yorkshire.

Rainbow Junktion are a café who intercept and make use of food that would otherwise go to waste from supermarkets, restaurants, and a whole host of other sources.

As well as this opportunity for waste-free fine dining, there will be talks, discussions and workshops to join in with, all revolving around solving some of the world’s most demanding food related issues.

Sustainability – one year on from our commitment One of the themes of #LIF18 was waste, and there were a number of events that got people talking about the issue whilst eating, of course, some delicious surplus food.

As the Festival drew to a close we started thinking about how to build upon the interest in this issue amongst the Leeds indie food sector.

We started with an issue where we knew we could make a difference – food and drink packaging.

Thanks to Hubbub’s #LeedsByExample project, there’s been a lot of work going on in Leeds over the last 6 months around “on-the-go” recycling. You’ll hopefully have spotted the yellow and orange bins in the city centre – making it easier for people to recycle when out and about.

We’re involved with #LeedsByExample – and in chatting to indies in the city about the project it was clear that a different approach was needed for them – in part because much of the packaging indies use is different to that used by the big chains. Most use compostable coffee cups for example, rather than plastic lined cups.

Over the last few months we’ve been looking at what more can

be done – so please keep an eye out for announcements during LIF19. The kind of thing you can expect is more collaboration to ensure that compostable packaging actually gets composted – alongside a scheme to encourage more takeaway coffee customers to use reusable cups.

It’s important that Leeds indies keep innovating on this stuff.

It’s great that the big chains are doing more on recycling - and that’s having a big impact in our city centre. But we need the indies to push things on further - for example by working with their customers to encourage more of them to use reusable cups - or to ensure food and

The fifth year of Leeds Indie Food brings another opportunity to highlight some of the amazing indie activity that’s forever bubbling away under the surface of the cityscape. Our event series is a great way to shout about what’s on offer, but make no mistake that there’s always something cooking away from the Leeds independent foodies.

Since we last met, independents have continued to thrive on the Leeds food and drink scene. It’s been a great year for existing favourites to take on new adventures, as well as some new-to-Leeds talent getting themselves set-up in the continuously growing food and drink capital of the north.

2018 saw North Brewing Co migrate a second offering into the city centre, with their new taproom on Sovereign Street forever full of thirsty craft beer fans. The slick new bar has Little Bao Boy in residence, offering their trademark steamed buns alongside sell-out events like the recent ramen night. The two indies have become so close that they’re now integrating, launching an exclusive beer collab for Leeds Indie Food.

Replacing an old favourite with something new, the nostalgic spot of Carpe Diem was refurbed.

Of course, the independent revolution isn’t restricted to the city centre. Indies are taking advantage of vacant spots in the suburbs, spreading the word of the independent eats far and wide. Feed has set up in Pudsey, offering a daily changing menu and the greats behind Belgrave, Headrow House & Water Lane Boathouse are transforming a Great British pub Stainbeck Road into something more in-line with the varied offerings of their city centre indie digs.

The Gallery at 164 Free 29th April – 31st May

The Gallery at 164 will be running a photography exhibition throughout the festival and beyond; a photography project capturing chefs’ hands. These hard-working, fast-moving, skillfilled and often unseen limbs will be showcased, and celebrated in this exhibition, which supports the Pilot Light Campaign. Pilot Light focus on changing the way people think about, and act on, mental health issues, through addressing the industry-specific contexts and environments found in the hospitality sector, and in professional kitchens. A must see.

We have the Brewery of the Year. We have the UK’s Best Beer Bar. We have over £1.5 million in brewery crowdfunding.

Safe to say, the craft beer scene in Leeds continues to thrive, in epic proportions.

While you’ve never had to look far for a fix of craft beer in the city, there are now even more taps to taste, from old favourites to brand new guest pours in Leeds. Not only does Leeds have a huge variety of beer on offer, but the bars to drink it in are spread across the city and continuing to pop-up.

In the last six months alone, the city has welcomed a plethora of new craft beer focused venues; Assembly Underground, Brew Society, two of Salt Brewery’s Craft Asylums, Brownhill & Co and the newest tap room location from North Brewing, to name a few.

With so many offerings from one industry in such a small place, you’d think there’d be some heavy rivalry…

We’re yet to see any evidence of it. That Northern hospitality obviously takes priority as brewers continue to share, collaborate and boost each other up across the North (and beyond).

Vegan Goes Viral

Veganism has gone through the motions. It’s been the underground choice, it’s been the token addition to menus, it’s had its fair share of pop-ups.

But now? It’s no longer a trend, or a sanctimonious, flavour-free zone. It’s an amazing option, and it’s for the masses.

Last year we reported on the growth of the V word, from the indies to the supermarket biggies upping their game.

Through the past year, veganism has gotten even more stubborn; and it’s not softening up.

If it wasn’t already apparent, the sausage roll gods, Greggs, made sure that 2019 would be the year of vegan kudos – launching their now world-famous vegan sausage roll.

An affordable offering to the vegan market, seemingly pissing off every meat and two veg fan in the country and pricking up the ears of vegans in waiting.

Through the past year, vegan options were no longer a token menu offering, but instead were entire menus or varied, tasty dishes integrated in amongst the usual meat and veg. From the true barbecue saviours at Red’s integrating vegan into their menu, to Knaves Kitchen sustaining their residency at Oporto with messy vegan junk food, the Leeds indies are (as always) fully on the bandwagon.

Of course, we don’t want to miss an opportunity to share the vegan talent from the postcodes of Leeds. For LIF19 we’re welcoming a whole host of purely vegan events onto the roster, including an all-vegan special for Eat North on the 18th May, an exclusive masterclass creating seitan from scratch and the Lean Lunch and Laynes collab, amongst so many more.

Veganism has broken free from the underground and we’re here to celebrate the diverse flavours it’s brought to some of our indie favourites.
