A WORD FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, I am happy to report that The Chaplaincy Institute (“ChI”) is healthier than ever. And it feels somehow odd to say this during these extraordinary times, so I have chosen the theme, “Blessings In This Moment” for this report as a reminder that hope is alive, and that we are called to cultivate it - especially now.

I am fortunate to work with, for, and around such passionate people. This organization is a bright exemplar, with students continuing to say they wish they’d known about us sooner. What a testament to the world-changing vision that Gina Rose Halpern brought to life in 1998!

This report tells the story of ChI in more detail. It is a story of hope, of spiritual and physical growth, and of love made manifest by a dedicated group of people.

Guided by our strategic plan, we are moving to meet the challenge at hand — training and supporting innovative interfaith caregivers for a world in need, while making ourselves truly accessible to all who speak to love, dignity, and justice. We celebrate that we have recovered from the financial crisis of 4 years ago, and yet there is much to be done.

CHI’S CHI’SSTORY STORY Honoring the sacred connection of all is no small task! As we train our healers — interfaith chaplains, community ministers, and spiritual directors — we equip them with diverse and deep skill sets. This enables our graduates to provide relevant and informed spiritual care in hospitals, homes, prisons, corporations, the military, movements, and other emerging settings.

This sacred connection is woven into our approach to chaplaincy and has been since our founding in 1998 by Rev. Dr. Gina Rose Halpern. ChI was born of a dream and vision that came to Gina Rose and led to a new place of learning, connected to the earth, rooted in ancient wisdom and traditions, yet innovative and fresh. It teaches us to remember what is most important and to release what no longer serves.

Chaplaincy as we practice and teach it, recognizes life as a relational, interwoven, and inseparable whole. Our spiritual directors, chaplains, and community ministers bridge the secular and the sacred in daily living and dying. They serve as connectors, change agents, educators, leaders, and spiritual care providers for those moving through a season of uncertainty, instability, and an environment at risk.

Our curriculum combines a study of the world’s religions, an exploration of mystical paths and teachings, and ministerial formation for a life of spiritual care.

There are many pathways in the ChI Journey—board certified chaplain (BCC), interfaith ordination, interfaith chaplaincy certification, community ministry certification, and dual or transfer of ordination. The seminary also offers a Spiritual Direction Certificate program and continuing education courses and electives, such as Restorative Justice, Being With Dying & Death, and Eco-Ministry.

We encourage seminarians to retain and deepen their theological perspectives while expanding their capacity to care for a diverse world. Ours is a complete educational experience that prepares graduates to lead and serve wherever they are called to serve.

RESPONSIVE, RELEVANT CONTENT AND CULTURE Our focus is on cultivating academic rigor while being nimble enough to respond to real-world needs.

During the past 18 months, ChI staff and faculty have worked unbelievably hard to adapt our two key internationally recognized programs to a new COVID-19 environment while maintaining what is often called the “ChI secret sauce” or the magic that is possible in our classrooms.

First, we listened to feedback from our students. Then, using funds from our generous donors, we hired a consultant to help faculty members further improve courses to reduce Zoom fatigue.

Finally, we are nimble and responsive at our heart. During the past 18 months, our nation and world have begun an overdue reckoning around race, class, equity, and justice. We acknowledge our own shortcomings and commit to living our vision, fostering an Interfaith spiritual identity that connects all paths and wisdom traditions with a commitment to radical inclusivity and service.

Important discussions around how our own culture can both invite and exclude, both nourish and do harm, are happening even now in our Deep Culture working group. We must, and will, do better.

To that end, current and planned new course offerings include:

In just a few months, 10 faculty members creatively designed 19 strong academic classes that students now take at their convenience via our online learning platform.

We found an unexpected blessing in who began to show up. Our new virtual-first format meant that students began arriving from far beyond California, going from 39% to 57%. That number is still growing!

It is important to note that we are not 100% virtual. Our new format will see students come together in person once at the beginning of their studies, and once at the end — each time for a weeklong residential retreat. The first of these is scheduled for April, 2022, in the San Francisco Bay area, and we are excited to gather!

OUR PROGRAMS INTERFAITH CHAPLAINCY CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Through study, reflection, writing and engaging with others, students gain a broad understanding of the world’s faiths, while simultaneously deepening their relationship to their own spiritual traditions. The curriculum includes class instruction, group interactions, theological study, spiritual care skills, spiritual leadership, and practicum experience. It also incorporates a deep focus on individual spiritual formation for ministry.

Spiritual Direction, or spiritual accompaniment, is the art of companioning people on their spiritual journey. This program is designed for those who feel called to private practice in personal, one-on-one spiritual direction, and who anticipate working with clients from a variety of faith traditions. The program is also suited to other helping professionals who want to add a spiritual guidance perspective to their current work (such as psychotherapists, health practitioners, ministers, and chaplains.)

Students who successfully complete all requirements of this program are designated Spiritual Directors and receive a certificate of completion.
