FROMTHEHEADOFSCHOOL

Dear Friends,

I am proud to present this year’s edition of Chapin Today, a review of some of the exciting accomplishments the school community experienced together during the 2022-2023 academic year! As the new Head of School at Chapin, I am eager to see what new heights we are able to reach in the current year to share in the future.

I was so impressed with the emphasis on character education when I first visited the Chapin campus; with the obvious affection that students had for the school and for

their teachers; with the dedication of the faculty, staff, and administration; and with the palpable sense of community evident in my conversations with students, faculty, and parents alike. Now that I am fully immersed on a daily basis in the learning environment at Chapin, I can see that my first impressions were correct. It has been a pleasure meeting so many people who have great affinity for the school during my 10 months here.

In this issue, we share our gratitude with so many members of our extended school family for their generosity during the 2022-2023 academic year; offer some excerpts from our 2023 graduation speeches; acknowledge the recipients of school awards, celebrate the secondary school choices of the Class of 2023; provide some updates about our graduates (a section I would like very much to expand…); and outline some future plans in our Chapin Tomorrow section.

There is so much to be proud of as Chapin continues its 93-year history of opening the doors to more for its students. Enjoy this issue of Chapin Today - I look forward to seeing or meeting many of you in the weeks and months to come.

Kind regards,

congratulations TOTHECLASSOF2023

Each year, students are chosen to speak to their classmates at graduation. It is always a highlight of Chapin’s graduation ceremony. Here are excerpts from the speeches delivered by three members of the Class of 2023.

There’s a saying that all you really need to know about how to live can be learned in Kindergarten. I think that statement applies to our time at Chapin, as well: all of the fundamentals we really need to know to take our next steps, we ’ ve learned here at Chapin. Not only have we learned important lessons across all different academic subjects, but Chapin has also emphasized the invaluableness of character and community The Five Virtues, Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Kindness, and Perseverance will always serve as a moral compass for us because of how deeply they were ingrained into our education and community life.

We’ve put these core virtues into practice in our family groups, in Loaves and Fishes projects, during the hard times of COVID, and simply through our everyday actions as a community. Throughout our journey as Chapin students, we ’ ve all continued to be supportive and uplifting for each other whenever we were faced with challenges, were having a bad day, and as we each took steps outside of our comfort zones and found the courage to try new things.

ChloeCheng

There are many reasons that make Chapin a great school. The academics, arts, and athletics all make Chapin a place to learn, but we all know that. We all went to Chapin for these reasons. I believe what makes a school great is not only what pulls you there, but what keeps you there.

The thing that has kept me here at this school on Princeton Pike for 10 whole years was happiness I have felt an overwhelming sense of happiness every day when I come into school. Whether the happiness is a result of the helpful and amazing teachers, or my friends, Chapin is a happy place.

I will think of every happy moment Chapin has brought me. Sports Day, Ice Cream Bingo, and so many other moments of happiness will flood my mind.

Chapin Alumi, Former Faculty, and Current Faculty reunited at The Hun School’s rendition of Urinetown the Musical. Pictured are: Desiree Melegrito, P’21 and former faculty, Lucy Melchior ‘22, Jamie Staub ‘20, Erin Banque Cardenosa ‘23, and Joanna Franc, P’24 and current faculty.

Bryan Zhao, ‘23, is featured in Made in Asian America: A History for Young People, a new book by award-winning historian Erika Lee and three-time Newbery Honor author Christina Soontornvat. It is a great resource for young Americans. The book authors are doing virtual school talks in the AAPI month.

We asked a Chapin alumus, why he has included Chapin in his annual giving for over 20 years. Here is what Bill said.

“My first year at Chapin was in 5th grade, 1973. The class sizes were very small and the teachers were attentive. About 25 years after graduating there I reconnected with Mr. Steve Gingo who was my science teacher and cross country coach. Steve retired from a long career at Chapin in 2015. We remain in touch to this day. Sometimes I would visit the school during the annual Runathon and walk a dozen laps. Years ago after I made my first donation I felt the need to continue the habit every year.”

thank you to everyone who made GIFTSTOCHAPIN

The annual report details the generous contributions of the many constituents who supported the students and faculty of Chapin School during the 2022-2023 school year. This report reflects all donations received between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.

Support from current parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and other friends of the school is vital. Independent schools like Chapin raise funds to enhance the opportunities provided by tuition alone.

Thank you to everyone who has invested in Chapin in this way. Every effort has been made to recognize all those who made gifts to the school. We apologize for any oversights. Please advise the school of any errors at advancement@chapinschool.org

AREYOUELIGIBLEFORAMATCHINGGIFT?

Many companies will match charitable donations by their employees dollar-for-dollar (or sometimes even more). Check with your Human Resources Department to see if your company matches gifts.

INVESTINGINTHEFUTURE:LEGACYGIVING

Chapin School has often benefitted from planned gifts, starting with a bequest from Frances Chapin’s estate which helped sustain the school in the early 1950s. Over the year, many generous and far-sighted donors have helped generations of Chapin students. Here are some options.

BEQUESTS

Through a provision in your will, you can make a gift in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or personal property.

IRACHARITABLEROLLOVER

You can make a gift from your Individual Retirement Account to satisfy your required minimum distribution Transfers must be made directly to Chapin School by your IRA administrator Gifts up to $100,000 are not included in your gross income for federal tax purposes

GIFTSOFSTOCK

If you donate appreciated stocks bonds, or mutual fund shares instead of cash, you will receive charitable deductions at full market value while reducing your capital gains impact.

LIFEINSURANCE

You may list Chapin School as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy, donate an existing, paid-up life insurance policy you no longer need, or purchase a new life insurance policy and name Chapin School as the beneficiary

Always discuss any potential gifts with your own tax advisor.

CHAPIN tomorrow

As we look ahead to the future of Chapin School, there are a number of exciting initiatives already in place:

A Reimagined Runathon

We are bringing back the logging of miles and encouraging donations to Chapin from afar using new technology that helps supporters give to their students’ Runathon webpage. This year marked the 48th Annual Runathon. We are excited to continue this community tradition.

Return of Grandparents’ Day

Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day is back in a big way! We look forward to hosting this annual event for years to come, filling the school with special guests who get a sneak peek into the school life of their grandchildren and friends.

Alumni and Parents of Alumni Reunions

Older alumni and parents of alumni want to get together at Chapin. We are making this space for them in the Spring on May 31, 2024, and are excited to welcome so many friends back to Chapin!

Alumni/Parent of Alumni Coordinator

As we look to increase alumni engagement, we have designated an administrative staff member to reach out to and keep in touch with all alumni throughout the year, organizing alumni events, soliciting news, and profiling alumni in Chapin Today.

Alumni Network

We are looking into ways our alumni can stay connected with each other and with Chapin. More details on this initiative are to come in the year ahead.

Parent Ambassadors

We will engage current parents in our admission and advancement efforts because word of mouth is still the best way to educate families on all Chapin has to offer and to keep members of our community connected. If you are interested in becoming a Parent Ambassador, please email the Advancement Office, advancement@chapinschool.org.

Chapin’sMission

Chapin is dedicated to the belief that lifelong habits of the mind and heart are formed in the elementary and middle school years. Chapin provides a richly textured education that inspires academic achievement and builds strength of character. Within a diverse, caring, and supportive community, we prepare our students to meet the future with skill, confidence, determination, and generosity of spirit.

Chapin’sPhilosophy

We believe that students learn best in a supportive, encouraging, and diverse community Chapin shares a commitment to each child's academic, emotional, ethical, creative, physical, and social development In small classes that promote active learning, dedicated faculty create environments where critical thinking, effective communication, creativity, and curiosity flourish. Encountering challenges that lead to success, students develop a positive sense of self. A strong commitment to Chapin's five virtues (respect, responsibility, honesty, kindness, and perseverance) foster an environment for character development that complements our rigorous academic programs.

During the 2023-24 school year, we will be rearticulating our Mission & Philosophy.
