The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) The world's largest specialty nursing org and was created in 1969. The purpose is "to promote the health and welfare of those experiencing critical illness or injury by advancing the art and science of critical care nursing and promoting environments that facilitate comprehensive professional nursing practice". The top priority of the org is education of the critical care nurse. AACN publishes numerous docs and is at the forefront of setting professional standards of care. The AACN Certification Corporation, a separate company, develops and administers a Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) certification examination valid for 3 year period and is offered in adult, pediatric, neonatal, and progressive care spacialties.
