Letter from the President

I

was wondering recently if there is a standard measure of the rate of technological change.

When my grandfather was born in 1900 in Kiev, then part of the imperial Russia Empire, there certainly were no automobiles, no airplanes, no telephones, no radio or television, no computers, not even effective antibiotics to treat an infection. In Richmond at the same time, the house we now live in was being heated by coal fireplaces and cooled by open windows. Before my grandfather died in the late 1970’s, a visit entailed driving to the airport and flying in a jet to Florida, where we sat in my grandparents’ air-conditioned home and watched Brady Bunch reruns in color. If I were to make the same trip today, I would use my smartphone to confirm my seat and perhaps watch a movie on my laptop during the flight. Amazing. And I am already starting to be left behind technologically. Emails to my teenage children go unanswered, as they now communicate by Instagram and Snapchat – platforms I am not (yet) conversant in – and I don’t know how comfortable I will be turning over control to a fully autonomous car when that technology inevitably arrives. However the rate of technological innovation is measured (it is a source of fierce debate I learned through a Google search enabled by a coffee shop WiFi), the pace is staggering.

How is the Church Hill Association keeping up with this change? We are an organization that proudly distributes a paper Newsletter. We meet in person every month at the St. John’s Church Parish Hall and take votes by raising hands or saying aye. We publicize our meetings by textonly email messages and maintain a web site that can be sort of hard to navigate and that is not mobile-friendly. So, I am pleased to announce that we have two new volunteers – Amy Atticks and Ali Schneider – recently arrived residents in Church Hill who have the ability and drive to invigorate our digital presence. Amy and Ali both work full-time for the Richmond Symphony where they have many duties, including maintaining their website, digital communications and graphic design. I am very excited that they are willing to bring their skills to our aid.

The very first task tackled by Amy and Ali was to create an Instagram account for the Church Hill Association. The handle is @chaofrva and the hashtag is #chaofrva. You can see it here: https:// www.instagram.com/chaofrva and you can start using it immediately by friending Church Hill businesses and community members, by sharing new and old Church Hill photos and whatever else you can do with Instagram – stuff I’m determined to learn. Next up is an audit of our website to find and prune outdated content, re-activate dead links and to generally reduce, consolidate, update and refresh all the content currently living on the website. They also plan to build out the resources tab on the web site (so please let us know what content and resources you would find helpful) and will help to integrate our communications between the web site, Instagram and the newsletter.

Community now arrives and coalesces in so many ways. Our enhanced digital presence will complement our mission to promote the common good of Church Hill. If you are interested in helping in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me – by email, Instagram(!) or even in person.

Inspired by Passion

Gini Koch, who will be in Richmond October 14-16 for the James River Writers Conference, writes the fast, fresh and funny Alien/Katherine “Kitty” Katt series for DAW Books, the Necropolis Enforcement Files series, and the Martian Alliance Chronicles series.

Touched by an Alien, Book 1 in the Alien series, was named by Booklist as one of the Top Ten Adult SF/F novels of 2010. Alien in the House, Book 7 in her long-running Alien series, won the RT Book Reviews Reviewer’s Choice Award as the Best Futuristic Romance of 2013.

What was your favorite book as a child?

So many. So, so many. The book that got me to read on my own (because I LOVE having someone read aloud to me) was Charlotte’s Web. The book I devoured again and again was The Phantom Tollbooth. But the books that remained with me all through into adulthood were the Complete Works of O. Henry and the Complete Sherlock Holmes.

Do you have a favorite sentence or character?

I’d say my favorite character is Katherine “Kitty” Katt, because she’s the character that gave me my career. I love all my characters, even the villains and, frankly, I like every scene I write, or you don’t see them. My favorite sentence is probably this one, uttered by Kitty in Touched by an Alien: “My crazy’s working a lot better than your sanity.”

What’s the best/worst part about being an author?

Deadlines. I write better with a distinct goal, so deadlines are awesome, and they’re also proof that I’m getting paid. They are also painful to miss and create sometimes more stress than I’d like, so they’re also the worst part about being an author.

Give us the elevator pitch for your book.

It’s True Lies crossed with Men In Black, with some Miss Congeniality thrown in.

Basically, my heroine discovers that the Roswell rumors are true, but with a twist – the aliens are here to help us and, as a side benefit, they’re all gorgeous. Kitty gets involved in the fight to protect the Earth from all the dangers, internal and extremely external, attacking it, and she ends up saving the day using a Mont Blanc pen, her knowledge of comics and pop culture, hairspray, and rock ‘n’ roll.

If you had to create a playlist for it, what songs would be on it?

LOL. Sorry, I’m laughing because every book in the Alien/ Katherine “Kitty” Katt series has a playlist in it. Very long playlists. Kitty is very musically driven. But, in the spirit and all that – the entire “Get the Picture?” album from Smash Mouth, “Sharp Dressed Man” by ZZ Top, “No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn” by The Beastie Boys, “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, “Keepin’ It Gangsta” by Fabulous and a host of other rappers, “Cold” by Tears for Fears, “Crazy” by Aerosmith, and “Accidentally in Love” by the Counting Crows.

Gini will be teaching two Master Classes on Friday, October 14 on world-building and on character development as well as participating in several panels over the two-day weekend.

Church Hill Association’s Annual Holiday Festival

Church Hill, Where Richmond Began celebrates the 2016 winter holidays with an array of festivities.

restaurants, music, and holiday merriment. This is the season's must attend event for the entire neighborhood. Will Call at the door.

One of the nation’s most historically significant neighborhoods, Church Hill, will host its Holiday Festival on December 9, 10 and 11, 2016.

Participants will be able to celebrate history while creating new holiday memories with family and friends. Designed by Major William Mayo in 1737, historic Church Hill is Richmond’s oldest intact neighborhood and contains the most antebellum structures in the city.

Sunday December 11h 12 to 5 pm- The Annual Historic House Tour. $25 per Tour ticket in advance/ $30 the day of and “Will Call” at St. John’s Church Parish Hall (12 to 4 pm). We’re the oldest community in historic Richmond with homes built as far back as the 1700s. The neighborhood is an elegant mix of Federal, Greek revival and Victorian homes alongside innovative condominiums within historic structures and a growing number of thriving new restaurants and businesses. eighbors will open their treasured homes for you to experience the sights, smells and sounds of holidays past. Shuttle service is offered between each home beginning at St. John’s Church.

Join us for one or all events! CHA membership is not required. Proceeds from ticket sales go to support charitable causes that improve the quality of life in the Greater Church Hill neighborhood.

Friday, December 9th - The Candlelight Walk and Caroling. Free to all!

The candlelight walk begins in Jefferson Park at Union Hill at 7:15pm with bagpipes and drummers leading the way. Via Princess Anne St., it makes its way to join the Vespers at Historic St. John’s Church. (Vespers at 7pm) From there, the congregation joins in the walk at approximately 7:35 pm. As the crowd grows continuing down our streets lit by gaslights, neighborhood parties empty out into the streets and the crowd continues to swell. You will join in and gather on historic Libby Hill Park with the 180 degree View overlooking the James River and our city gloriously lit up for the holidays as the backdrop. The crowd then joins for holiday caroling and a visit from Santa. All are welcome to become part of a living fairy tale scene that will be long remembered.

CHURCH HILL ASSOCIATION OF RVA (CHA OF RVA) PRINCIPLES FOR GIVING AND DONATION ADMINISTRATION CHA of RVA Donation Principles 1. Donations must benefit our community and be consistent with the mission of the CHA of RVA. 2. Donations will only be considered upon formal written request to the CHA of RVA’s Development and Community Outreach Committee submitted prior to January 31st of the year in which the funds are to be distributed. Immediate/emergent needs will be considered on a case by case basis.

3. Following a request, donations must be evaluated through a formal review process which shall consider: a) the requesting organization’s name and confirmation that they qualify under our charter; b) the anticipated Church Hill community benefit resulting from the proposed donation; c) the specific project, as described in the written request, funded by the proposed donation; d) the name of person who will administer the donated funds; and e) the time frame or dates the project funded by the CHA of RVA will begin and end.

4. Projects with a specific purpose, defined duration, and tangible community benefits are strongly preferred.

5. “General Benefit” donation requests without specific defined benefits are discouraged.

6. Donations will be affordable and dependent on CHA of RVA’s success in fund raising. We shall retain adequate funds to assure the ongoing financial viability of CHA of RVA. We shall follow the conditions outlined in our charter.

Recipients’ Responsibilities Organizations receiving funds from CHA of RVA must provide a brief follow up report to the Board within 90 days of completion of project, no more than one year following the awarding of funds. This report must be received before any request for subsequent funds will be considered.

Recipient submittal of their project reports will help the CHA of RVA Board improve our grant effectiveness along with helping us determine whether past recipients should be considered if/when making future grant requests.

Donation Administration Obligations -The CHA of RVA membership shall approve an annual and, when appropriate, special cause donation budgets to be administered by the CHA of RVA Board.

-Specific donations shall be approved by the CHA of RVA Board, utilizing the 6 principles listed above. The Board is not obligated to donate all approved funds.

-Donations shall be consistent with the CHA of RVA’s 501(c)(3) obligations.

-The board shall communicate specific donation decisions to the CHA of RVA membership. When appropriate, the CHA of RVA shall communicate outcomes we support / fund to the broader Church Hill community.

Editorial Policy Submissions for inclusion to the Church Hill Association’s newsletter are welcomed. Editorial Policy does not allow for personal attacks or inappropriate tone, profanity, or anonymous submissions. Submissions may be edited for space and editorials should not exceed 250 words. CHA will not print editorial letters that are abusive or nontruthful. It is only as a courtesy that we may occasionally print letters from non-members when they add value to the conversation. Final approval of all submissions rests with the Board of Directors. The Church Hill Newsletter is distributed by volunteers throughout the Church Hill neighborhood (North and South of Broad Street). We also distribute to several area merchants. A total of 1200 issues are distributed monthly.

Due Dates Copy must be submitted by the 14th of each month to newsletter@churchhill.org.
