Teen & Tween Programs

TEENS & TWEENS

INDEPENDENT P.E. The Y partners with all Ventura Unified and Ojai Schools to provide an opportunity for those students who would like to secure P.E. credits for graduation. Independent Study P.E. forms can be obtained from a school counselor and must be approved by the Y’s Wellness Director. Students must also complete additional membership paperwork to become facility members.

TEEN STRENGTH TRAINING (AGES 12 - 19) This course helps teens learn, understand and practice the fundamentals of developing muscular strength for personal fitness. A YMCA fitness staff member will lead the program that includes a cardiovascular workout, endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility exercises. Participants will learn the five key components of fitness and how to develop their own personal training program. This is all done in a structured, yet fun, environment.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CARE

AFTER THE BELL (6 - 8 GRADES) The Ventura Family YMCA offers this award-winning program to middle school students in Ventura. It is held from the end of each school day until 6pm in the Ventura Y Teen Center. The program offers a healthy snack, homework help, computers, Nintendo Wii, basketball, group play and much more! Before school care is also available from 7 - 8:45 am on school days and on early release Fridays from 1 - 6pm.

YOUTH & GOVERNMENT (SEPTEMBER - FEBRUARY) Through the Y’s Youth and Government Program (Y&G), 9th -12th graders can take part in learning about state laws and government, as well as civil and supreme court processes, while developing strong social skills and building healthy relationships. Join over 3,500 teenagers from across the State of California for this amazing program. Participants are trained in various government and court roles in preparation for the Model Legislature and Court Conference held at the State Capitol in Sacramento in February. Participants spend the week debating bills, taking positions on legislative issues, running for elected offices, and covering government as members of the news media. Y&G is the only program in the State of California that gives students the privilege of working in the actual Senate and Assembly Chambers of the Capitol Building!
