Stances, Skills, & Stories for Healing & Reclaiming our Movements Learning and Leading Movements with the John W. Mack Movement Building Fellows

JOHN W. MACK MOVEMENT BUILDING FELLOWS PROGRAM

Change Elemental has had the honor of designing and facilitating the John W. Mack Movement Building Fellows Program in partnership with the Weingart Foundation since 2019. Mack Fellows lead us toward an equitable and thriving Southern California that centers the wisdom and experience of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color Communities — People of the Global Majority.

The purpose of the fellowship is to strengthen movement leaders to lead social and racial justice work that results in a more just and equitable Southern California region. To that end, the fellowship creates conditions for fellows to transform their leadership stance and skills to respond and adapt to ever-changing conditions with greater ease. Our fractal approach moves across individual, organizational, and movement leadership terrain.

Tending to inner work and embracing multiple ways of knowing is required for deep equity and liberation, to support a “big we” and be well in it all together. We also bring attention to liberatory power—the ability to create what we want through abundance, consciousness, and practice—while tending to the relationships necessary for “power with,” and some attention to appropriate uses of power over (like in supervision for example). Our central focus is on cultivating/growing and supporting power within.

We worked with LizArtistry over the past year to create graphic images that represent some of the spirit, skills, and stories of the fellowship. As you see the literal movement and sparkle portrayed throughout these images, we also invite you to consider which practices resonate with you. We designed each image to stand alone and yet it is together that they begin to hold the whole of the fellowship experience (the whole always being more than the sum of the parts).

We are now working with the third cohort of the Mack Fellows as well as facilitating an alumni network design team to seed deeper connections and collaboration across cohorts.
