March is here and with the sunshine and warmer weather comes the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival for two weekends: March 11-13 & March 17-20. Starting next week, the Chamber will celebrate Chandler with national music entertainment including The Band Perry, Uncle Kraker, Walker Hayes, Flo Rida, The Spazmatics, The Beach Boys, Nelly, and The Four Tops & Temptation.

On top of this amazing lineup, the Chandler Chamber Ostrich Festival will feature exciting midway rides, fabulous local entertainment, vendors, and delicious fair food!

Tickets can be purchased at www.ostrichfestival.com. Stop by the Chamber Hospitality Tent and say, “Hi!” We hope to see you there!

March is also Women’s History Month which celebrates the contributions women have made to the United States and recognizes the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. Keep in mind, The Chandler Chamber’s Women in Leadership program supports, educates, and elevates the business women of Chandler. This monthly event will take place Tuesday, March 15 and will feature top female Cardiologist, Dr. Himal Shah, and American Heart Association director, Edyth Haro. We encourage you to wear red in support of heart health!

CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT YMCA builds healthy spirit, mind, body for all The Chandler/Gilbert YMCA is a nonprofit organization serving Chandler, Gilbert and neighboring communities. The Y has been present in the Chandler/Gilbert communities since 1985, while also serving the greater Phoenix community since 1892. The mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. The Y focuses on three pillars; Youth Development, Healthy Living, Social Responsibility.

Through programs and services, the YMCA works to enrich the lives of children, families, and older adults.

Popular YMCA youth programs include Preschool (ages 1-5), Summer Camps, Youth Sports, Swim Lessons, Teen Leadership Programs, and ESports.

Programs offered for adults include health and wellness training, swimming, cancer support groups and group fitness classes such as Zumba, yoga, strength training and active older adult programs.

The YMCA ensures that nobody is turned away based on an inability to pay. The Y is able to make this commitment through generous donors and supporters.

I am excited for our community to attend the Ostrich Festival this month. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce and its event promoter, Steve Levine Entertainment, have put together a fabulous lineup of attractions and musicians spanning

seven event days at Tumbleweed Park. It’s a wonderful way to welcome back the Ostrich Festival and I look forward to seeing you there!

The state of our city is strong and focused on the future. The value of building permits surpassed $1 billion for the second consecutive year and many companies are growing and expanding their operations here. We have never had more jobs and corporate headquarters in Chandler, all over Chandler.

Chandler is among the safest cities in the nation with serious crime rates the lowest they’ve

been in 35 years. Rates this low last occurred in 1987 when our population was 80,000 residents.

Chandler is a top spot for an active lifestyle and investments in parks, recreation, events and programs are bringing residents together to preserve the character of Chandler neighborhoods and celebrate our rich heritage and diversity. Our annual report at chandleraz.gov/2021annualreport details these and many other accomplishments of the past year.

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S HISTORY

Every March, we celebrate the contributions of history-making women to our society. Women’s History Month is an opportunity to reflect on and recognize the strength and many accomplishments of brilliant women throughout history that are long overdue. From science to politics, it’s a chance to reflect on the trailblazing women who lead the way for change.

In 1980, the National Women’s History Alliance championed for the holiday to be observed as a national week, and this was backed by President Jimmy Carter, who issued the first proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week.

The following year, Congress forwarded a resolution establishing a national observance. Six years

later, the expansion of the event to the whole month of March was successfully petitioned by the National Women’s History Project.

This year’s theme is an inspiring tribute: Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope. This theme is “both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.” I would like to honor all Women by sharing a stanza written by favorite Black Women poet, American author, actress, screenwriter, dance, and civil rights activist Maya Angelo. May this Poem empower you to heal and deliver you hope in 2022. Celebrate the Women in your life!

Girls athletics are a point of pride at Seton Catholic Preparatory in Chandler Coach Karen Self leads a basketball dynasty at Seton Catholic Preparatory If Arizona sports has a dynasty, it’s at a small private school in Chandler “I think everyone pretty much knows it’s a dynasty.

You know, I’ve never seen a program with as much success as she’s had,” said Terry Licht, Seton Catholic Preparatory assistant athletic director.

He’s talking about his school’s girls basketball program, which has racked up 12 state titles and has played in 17 championship games in the past 30 years.

The she he mentions is the team’s head coach, Karen Self, who’s been here through it all.

“I really feel like she is a pillar of Seton. And Seton would not be what it is today without Karen Self,” Licht said.

The boys programs usually rule the roost at local high schools. But not here. Even according to varsity boys basketball head coach Raymond Patche, girls rule at Seton.
