Internships serve as a bridge between the academic and professional world, offering invaluable experiences that equip students with the skills, knowledge, and connections necessary for a successful career launch. These professional environments provide a hands-on learning experience where knowledge meets real-world application, fostering the development of key skills and enhancing future employability.
Internships provide practical experience, and allow students to apply classroom learning to real-world situations. Theoretical knowledge gains a practical perspective, as interns engage with industry professionals on projects relevant to their field of study. This experiential learning not only reinforces academic concepts but also cultivates critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability which are foundational skills essential for career success.
Additionally, internships serve as a catalyst for students to grow their professional network. A robust professional network is instrumental in today’s competitive job market, and internships provide a space for students to establish meaningful relationships with industry professionals, mentors, and peers. These connections not only offer guidance and mentorship, but also open doors to potential job opportunities and career advancement down the road.
Internships also provide a great deal of benefits to the host organization, as employers gain access to a new pool of talent that bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. The ability to offer internships allow businesses to evaluate potential employees in a real-world environment, and serve as an effective long-term recruitment strategy. This process helps employers identify top talent and reduce both risk and cost of onboarding new team members. A successful internship program creates a talent stream of (continued)
(continued) individuals who can seamlessly transition into full-time positions.
Furthermore, employers known for successful internship programs are often seen as industry leaders set on fostering the next generation of professionals. This kind of reputation can attract top talent and enhance the public’s image as a highly-desirable employer.
Internships play a critical role in preparing students for the workforce. From skill building to career exploration, these immersive learning experiences empower students to transition from the classroom to the workplace with confidence, competence and connections. As community leaders continue to recognize the transformative power of internships, efforts to expand access to quality internships becomes increasingly important in shaping our future workforce.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared “that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.”
Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The name “Juneteenth” is a blend of two words: “June” and “nineteenth.” It’s believed to be the oldest African American holiday, with annual celebrations on June 19th in different parts of the country dating back to 1866. Moreover, it is also a celebration of African American culture.
The state of Texas, a significant player in the Civil War, was one of the last holdouts of the South to free enslaved people. It wasn’t until two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed that slaves were informed they were free. Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and announced, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves the absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.” With General Granger’s (continued)
(continued) announcement, June 19th became known as Juneteenth, marking a significant moment in the history of African Americans in Texas and the United States.
Today, Juneteenth is not just a historical event but a vibrant celebration of freedom and African American culture. It is an official American holiday observed annually on June 19th. Juneteenth celebrations include a wide range of activities such as church services, public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, rodeos, food, dancing, storytelling, and fellowship, all of which serve to honor the past and celebrate the present.
Here’s what the attendees had to say:
“This was a great roundtable, a lot of great discussion surrounding the industry and what is directly impacting it. There was a consesus on the need for more skilled labor.”
- Michael Schilling, Head of AZ Operations at WGNSTAR
“Thank you Terri Kimble and the Chamber for hosting this insightful event and [for inviting] Edwards Vacuum to be part of these series. Looking forward to the next session.”
- Najwa Khazal, VP/GM of Edwards Vacuum
Public safety continues to be a top priority as local news stories call attention to the rise in retail theft and teen violence across the East Valley. These trends underscore the critical need to further open lines of communication with local law enforcement agencies.
At a recent Chandler Chamber of Commerce Public Policy Series event, the new Chandler Police Chief, Bryan Chapman, offered valuable insights into fostering effective communication between the local business community and law enforcement. Chief Chapman detailed the appropriate contact methods for various public safety concerns, explaining when to use the 911 emergency number versus the non-emergency number. He emphasized that 911 should be called to report active crimes, while the non-emergency number is intended for reporting incidents that have already occurred.
Additionally, Chief Chapman praised the efforts of the Community Outreach Navigators, who aid the homeless population to secure stable housing and rebuild their lives. This targeted effort not only mitigates homelessness, but also fosters a safer community by addressing a root causes and providing vital services. Chief Chapman demonstrated his commitment to proactive engagement with the community to ensure the safety and well-being of Chandler businesses and residents.
Furthermore, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors (continued)
(continued) Chairman Jack Sellers highlighted the role of county government in providing essential services such as public safety and transportation. He emphasized the significance of Proposition 400 in advancing county-wide transportation infrastructure over the last 20 years. As the state continues to experience increased economic growth, it is necessary that we remain committed to maintaining a robust transportation system and improved connectivity. Chairman Sellers stressed the critical importance of Proposition 479 to continue advancing the local transportation system to benefit both businesses and residents alike.
Lastly, Matt Dunbar, Director of Budget and Policy for the City of Chandler, clarified the arduous but thorough annual budgetary process, as City Council prepares to vote on the FY 2024-25 proposed budget and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) in June. The new fiscal year begins July 1, 2024
The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) reveals how this technology can be an enabler and a disruptor for small businesses and the workforce.
For companies facing labor shortages, AI offers a lifeline to handle routine and repetitive tasks. Appointment scheduling, data entry, basic analysis and some aspects of customer service are being automated. This reduces entry-level job opportunities, making it harder for workers to gain the initial experience needed.
The challenges and opportunities of this AI disruption requires evaluating how it can free up small business owners and employees to focus on higher-value activities.
We’re proud to partner with the Chandler Chamber, higher educational institutions and local companies to develop programs that prepare people for opportunities in the modern workforce. The growth of AI in small business sectors illustrates the importance of workforce development, continuous learning and adaptability. New graduates and people who embrace lifelong learning and remain flexible in their career paths are more likely to thrive in an AI-augmented job market.
Workforce development and degree programs that include AI literacy and related skills are essential for businesses and people to navigate the realities of the marketplace. The key lies in recognizing AI’s benefits and mitigating its pitfalls by preparing both businesses and individuals for the evolving landscape it creates.
AI-powered systems help businesses create personalized recommendations and upsell customers based on data (continued)
(continued) such as past orders and preferences. AI predictive analytics assist with inventory management, identifying what items are going to be in demand at certain times. These automation tools can allow businesses to operate with leaner inventory and teams.
AI-driven analytics provide small businesses with insights previously reserved for large corporations with dedicated data science teams. Leveraging AI to understand market trends, customer preferences and operational inefficiencies, empowers local businesses to make informed decisions that drive growth.
AI helps small businesses create content for websites, blogs and social media that showcase their offerings to customers. Keeping online content up to date with AI takes seconds and gives customers searching online the best chance to find local businesses.
AI algorithms can speed up hiring processes by sifting through resumes and helping businesses develop qualified talent. Using AI for training and upskilling employees provides personalized learning platforms that adapt to individual learning speeds and styles, bridging skill gaps more effectively than traditional methods.
I’ll admit, at times, it seems like we’re heading toward life in a Sci-Fi movie. But, it’s important to keep this AI innovation in perspective. Like any technology, it provides the opportunity to evaluate and adapt what we do. Workforce and skill development programs offer vital resources that can help small businesses leverage technology and the skills of employees to best serve their customers.
In a dynamic display of civic engagement and community involvement, the Chandler City Council Candidate Forum took center stage. Moderated by the well-respected public affairs consultant and Chandler resident, Garrick Taylor, the Forum served as a platform for candidates to articulate their positions on critical issues.
From business and workforce to economic prosperity to public safety, the Forum dove into a wide range of topics that resonate with residents. Each topic offers the audience a glimpse into the vison, priorities, and commitments of the seven candidates on the July 30th ballot.
At the heart of any thriving community is a robust economic ecosystem. As candidates articulated their individual strategies to foster growth and innovation, dialogue rest on the need to leverage Chandler’s unique strengths, nurture entrepreneurship, attract investment, and foster community partnerships to stimulate economic vitality.
As the economy continues to thrive, the need for a reliable workforce development pipeline grows more immense. Candidates outlined their plans for workforce development. On top of the list is to address the skills gap, promote lifelong learning, and collaborate with businesses and educational institutions to further strengthen the city’s competitive edge in a global economy.
With public safety being a focal point for a vibrant community, candidates shared potential strategies to enhance law enforcement, emergency response, and public safety initiatives. Beyond proactive measures and community engagement, candidates support additional resource allocation to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.
The Forum provided a public platform for candidates to demonstrate their ability to navigate differences of opinion and make clear their vision for the office. Candidates were questioned about their effectiveness to collaborate and compromise with others, in the midst of complex challenges.
In an effort to encourage active participation in the democratic process, candidates encouraged residents to get out and vote on July 30th.
As the host of the Chandler City Council Candidate Forum, the Chandler Chamber of Commerce understands the critical importance of open dialogue, civic engagement and informed voting to ensure that the city remains a top destination to live, work and play.

Every year, the Chandler Chamber partners with Chandler City Lifestyle Magazine to recognize the men who define our community, from founders, to owners, to teachers, to captains.
Meet the 2024 Men of Chandler - a slice of our East Valley “village” - to hear their stories & learn about where they’re going next.
Northern Arizona University is bringing hospitality education to the East Valley—bachelor’s degree programs, undergraduate certificates, and non-credit professional development opportunities.
NAU’s nationally ranked School of Hotel and Restaurant Management—part of The W. A. Franke College of Business—hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mesa Workforce Development Center (MWDC) this spring. The center will be located near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport at Skybridge Arizona.
“The primary goal of the Mesa Workforce Development Center is to provide education and training programs that equip students and working adults with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the hospitality industry, and to create a learning environment that promotes inclusivity, excellence, and economic mobility,” said Galen Collins, Associate Dean of The W. A. Franke College of Business.
NAU will offer two bachelor’s degree programs: Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and Hospitality Leadership. “NAU’s HRM degree provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality industry; equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in various managerial roles within hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other hospitality establishments.”
The state-of-the-art center will include a restaurant and coffee bar on the first floor that will be open to the public and serve a dual role providing hands-on workspaces for students to hone their skills. Upstairs will be home to NAU learning spaces including modern classrooms, (continued)
(continued) rooms and study areas, as well as a specially designed industrial kitchen and beverage lab to elevate the hospitality student experience.
The university is accepting applications for fall 2024 admission! New freshmen as well as students who are ready to transfer to NAU are encouraged to apply now.
The center will also offer non-credit career education and workplace training opportunities to help grow and strengthen the hospitality workforce. “The MWDC will offer a unique blend of programs and experiences tailored to the specific needs and opportunities within the broader East Valley region,” Collins said.
The first non-credit course to launch through the center in collaboration with NAU Continuing Education is the ServSafe Manager program. Aspiring or current foodservice employees can enroll and complete the course and exam with NAU for only $79. Receiving the ServSafe Manager certification can provide students with a competitive advantage when applying for jobs or career advancement opportunities across the food-service and restaurant industry.
