The Journey of Microchip’s Radical Transformation

A Chandler 100 Company

Microchip Technology went from a failing company losing $10 million a year to one of the most successful semiconductor suppliers in the world gaining a global revenue of over $8 billion a year. The leader behind this transformation? Steve Sanghi, Executive Chair of Microchip.

He shares his journey of transforming Microchip into a semiconductor juggernaut, a top 10 Chandler 100 company with headquarters in Chandler, AZ, in his latest book, “Up and to the Right”.

When Sanghi was named the President of Microchip in 1990, the company was losing millions of dollars and he knew something needed to change. With his executive team, they developed the aggregate system with a goal to “redesign the enterprise in which all of the resources, strategies, goals, actions, and employees work in unison¨. Microchip began to make a profit.

Fast forward to the economic recession of

2008, the semiconductor industry plummeted but Sanghi and his team came up with a strategy to stay open and avoid layoffs. Sanghi recalled that although employees worldwide received a 10% pay cut, employees stayed loyal to Microchip. When the economy came back, Microchip was one of a handful of semiconductor companies still running -- the following year, they grew 57%.

Although Microchip was financially doing well, it was at a skill disadvantage. The company wanted to scale up to its competitors and manufacture a variety of computer parts. Over the next 13 years, Sanghi led the company through 20 successful acquisitions. Not only did Microchip grow its revenue, but they increased its capabilities.

Sanghi said acquisitions were very difficult because they would acquire employees that were marching to different values, skills, and goals. His leadership team set goals with every acquisition and used the aggregate system as

a method to encourage new employees to work in unison. He developed a company culture of success, confidence, loyalty, and innovation and in return, employees believed in the company and so did the rest of the world. Sanghi took Microchip from the jaws of bankruptcy to becoming the most respected, profitable and meaningful semiconductor company in the world.

He hopes ¨the youth learn to look up to scientists, engineers and inventors as heroes of society¨ through robotics. Microchip sponsors youth robotics competitions organized by AZFirst, a 501(C) foundation, to show students the value of science, math, and engineering. Students develop real life skills while solving practical problems in an intense and competitive environment. People will say the competition is about students building robots, but Sanghi argues ¨its robots who build the students ¨.

Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-24 Budget

Last month, the City Council passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 23-24 budget. As I reflect on the almost year-long process, here are a few things that make me particularly proud about this budget.

Let’s start with a few notable budget items that benefit every single Chandler resident and business. This budget maintains all existing City service levels while also enhancing programs that are tied to our Strategic Framework. It also lowers property tax rates for the 8th year in a row and pays off the City’s Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). And all of this happens as we continue to maintain the lowest annual cost of services across the entire Valley.

This budget helps grow our business and workforce community as well. The City Council has approved an IGA to implement the Chandler Endeavors entrepreneurship program, which connects aspiring entrepreneurs to resources. Additionally, City staff will soon initiate a workforce development pilot program to connect Chandler’s employers with talent, educational partners and resources.

Overall, the budget increases 22.5%, with around 43% dedicated to Capital Improvement Projects, many of those focused on aging infrastructure. The budget adds funding for police, fire and park maintenance projects.

The thoughtful, fiscally responsible approach of this budget takes into account inflationary impacts on operational costs. It also invests in personnel to attract and retain the very best employees to ensure we continue to provide the highest level of service possible.

I am confident that this budget makes us a stronger city for our residents and for the business community. It will also help ensure that Chandler remains as attractive as ever for businesses that are considering a move to Chandler. I’m grateful to my fellow councilmembers and all of the staff members who helped bring it to fruition.

July Is Disability Awareness Month! July Is Disability Awareness Month!

What is a disability? The definition that was contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act says that a person with disability is someone who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity. According to the CDC there are six functional types of disabilities, and they are: mobility, cognition, independent living, hearing, vision, and self-care. Having a disability makes it difficult to complete daily tasks, but not all disabilities are the same. Some disabilities are constant, some disabilities can flare up, some disabilities can even go away. In the workplace visible and invisible disabilities as well as temporary disabilities should be met with support, and the willingness to be understanding of the effects of disability. One in

four adults in the United States (if not more) have some form of disability. When thinking of disability we must recognize the scope of disability which can include anxiety, depression, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscular dystrophy, autism, that’s just a short list, that list is just an example of disabilities that can be seen and cannot be seen.

CUSD Graduates Win Seed Money for their Startup Company

5 entrepreneurs pitched their business idea at the Chandler Endeavor: Entrepreneurial Series for the chance to win seed money donated by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation. Congratulations BorroUp – the recipient of this funding! BorroUp is a peer-to-peer mobile adventure gear rental platform that is designed to take adventure gear people are not utilizing or don’t want to sell and creates a sustainable income opportunity. With the funding from the Chandler Chamber Community Foundation, BorroUp will further develop and improve their mobile app. This will enable their clients to offer an even more affordable and accessible way for outdoor enthusiasts to rent adventure gear.

Fun fact, the founders of this startup are Chandler Unified School District graduates. The Chamber Foundation and Arizona State University are excited to support BorroUp through their entrepreneurial journey!

The Chandler Endeavor Entrepreneurial Series is a series hosted by the City of Chandler, Chandler Chamber of Commerce, and ASU’s J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute. Navigating the Waves: Artificial Intelligence and its Cascading Impact on Industry Workforce

The arrival of artificial intelligence has been nothing short of a tidal wave, touching shores across various industries. As artificial intelligence applications proliferate, understanding their impact on the workforce is paramount. The wave carries both bounty and turbulence; it is vital to steer the ship adeptly to harvest the rewards.

Artificial intelligence is a double-edged

26 Chandler Chamber CONNECT | July 2023

sword that has primarily acted as a catalyst for enhancing productivity. Repetitive tasks, which used to be time-consuming, are now executed efficiently by artificial intelligence systems. These tasks allow employees to focus on tasks requiring human ingenuity. However, there’s a flip side; automation has led to job displacement, especially in roles involving routine tasks.

Artificial intelligence isn’t just about robots and algorithms but also a harbinger of new opportunities. The demand for artificial intelligence specialists, data analysts, and other tech-savvy roles has surged. Employees are in a dynamic ecosystem where adaptability and continual learning have become quintessential.

Navigating the change in the workforce requires a smooth sail; having a trained crew is imperative. Employers must invest in re-skilling programs, ensuring employees enhance their skills in the waves of artificial intelligence. The governments, on the other hand, should bolster this transition with policies that protect the workforce and incentivize learning.

Another aspect that deserves attention is ethical navigation. Artificial intelligence systems must be free of biases, and data privacy must be upheld.

Artificial intelligence is similar to a tidal wave that is revolutionizing industries. The transformation it brings is double-edged, with promises and challenges for the workforce. The focus should be on capitalizing on enhanced productivity, fostering an adaptable workforce through re-skilling, and ensuring ethical implementation. By navigating this artificial intelligence wave adeptly, industries can provide an open-handed catch for all involved. In doing so, the human workforce can coexist and thrive in this new artificial intelligence-dominated landscape.
