The Chandler Chamber of Commerce supports business and our community by providing vital programs and services that attract and retain business while embracing our diversity.

PRESIDENT | CEO

UPDATE

PRESIDENT | CEO What Does a Chamber of Commerce Do and Why Should You Join One? The best way to spread the word about your business is by making connections. Whether you’re new to the local community or a veteran company that has been around for decades, your reputation grows as you engage in other influential entities within your community.

Terri Kimble CEO

@terri_kimble

What is a Chamber of Commerce? The first chamber of commerce ever created came about in 1599 in Marseille, France. Its purpose was to gather merchants, industrialists, traders, and craftsmen in order to discuss and table community challenges. The chamber of commerce was a place of unity, even among competitors. Their voice soon became a persuasive power amidst public authorities and community. So much so that more would pop up throughout the centuries, and even throughout the world. Here at the Chandler Chamber we table both issues and trends taking place in our community as well as offer resources and services to help local businesses succeed. It isn’t just a goodwill effort, but an effective strategy. What Does the Chamber of Commerce Do? Chamber of Commerce organizations are not out-of-the-box, cookie-cutter setups. Every chamber is unique, with different benefits, resources, and opportunities. The Chandler Chamber has become a recognized source for business throughout the State of Arizona as the third largest Chamber in the state and growing. Our goal is to serve as an influential voice and power that stands for the wellbeing of the local business environment. This includes helping to promote local businesses and improve their growth. From regular networking and volunteer events to promotion and marketing packages, your membership will gain you access to opportunities to make connections, meet potential new clients, and gain exposure for your brand. The Chandler Chamber is actively advocating for all of our businesses, whether it be permitting, signage, office space or policy. If you are in need of assistance with any issues you are experiencing, we are here for you. Remember we are member driven, business strong.

Business & Relocation Guide

The Chandler Chamber of Commerce has partnered again with E&M Consulting, Inc. to produce our Business & Relocation Guide. The publication will be available in both print and digital formats. E&M will be managing the project, including advertising sales and layout/graphic design. They are extremely professional and produce a high-quality publication, and we ask that you give them a moment of your time. E&M will be contacting all members about the advertising opportunities available. The publication will be mailed to every member – a great opportunity to promote and give your company additional exposure. If you have any questions or would like to advertise, please contact an E&M sales associate at 800-572-0011 ext.8005 or advertising@eandmsales.com. As always, your support is greatly appreciated!

Rick Heumann CMA

BOARD CHAIR

Summer slows us all down a bit in Arizona, which means the Chamber and its Board of Directors can take a little time to prep for the future. Here are just a few things the Chamber Board is talking about this month. Our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee is diligently planning its next event, which will focus on making disabilities inclusion a priority. We are excited to welcome Judy Heumann, an internationally recognized disabilities advocate and leader in the disability community. Judy has been featured in the award-winning documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution”, TED talks, was one of Time’s 100 Women of the Year, and is a published author. Mark your calendars for July 26th, this

is a speaker you will not want to miss! While it’s hard to believe we are at the halfway mark for 2021, we are already planning for the future and how committees and Chamber staff can work more efficiently to create great results for business. The Chandler Chamber continues to be an advocate for the business community and all members it represents. Finally, we are planning for one of our Signature events – the Chandler 100! The Chandler 100 event has traditionally been one of our most well-attended programs as it honors Chandler’s largest employers. Keep an eye out for more information on this event to come.

CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT Si Se Puede Foundation strengthens communities The non profit Si Se Puede Foundation is widely recognized as a bridge builder and leader in providing community programs that improve the quality of life and strengthen communities, families and children. We aim to provide students with opportunities to excel and access experiences in their community beyond what the average school system provides or has the resources for. Students have the chance connect with learn from mentors in the community, operate world-class machinery, and connect with our experienced leadership team of active STEM professionals. There’s an opportunity to compete and succeed in competitions and challenges. Our teams have gone on to do some amazing things and you can be part of that tradition. 4

FROM THE MAYOR Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke

Budget Adoption

Last month, the City Council passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2223 budget. As I reflect on the 7-month process, there are a few

things that really stand out about the past year. I must admit – when I first saw the budget proposal, there was some hesitation. Chandler is a responsible, fiscally-sound city and the numbers caused some sticker shock. But as we moved through the process, it became clear that cutbacks due to the pandemic created a strong need for investment. So many projects that were put on hold will now be brought to life. And since 60% of the increase is for capital projects, we have the flexibility to delay projects in the event of any

negative economic fluctuation. Here’s some more great news. Even with the budget increases, we were still able to lower property taxes and continue to have the lowest costs of services of all towns and cities in the county. The FY 22-23 budget is packed with improvements for City parks and ballfields. It also funds several street projects and invests in Police and Fire. With this budget, Chandler will continue to emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever, continuing its legacy as a top destination for businesses.

What is an Estate Plan and Why Do You Need One? by Richard H. Agina, Esq. CPA, MBA | www.aginslawfirm.com An estate deals with the distribution of your assets, plans for estate and income taxes, and expresses your wishes for health care when you can’t do so yourself. By a WILL, you deal with the distribution of your property to your heirs and other beneficiaries. You may also appoint a guardian for your minor children, which you can do in no other way. Your executor or personal representative gathers your assets and distributes them according to your wishes. A TRUST also deals with the distribution of your property but,

as a private contract, avoids court supervision known as probate. Your trustee carries out the instructions in your trust as your fiduciary, and places your wishes above her own. Powers of Attorney (financial and healthcare) instruct your appointed agent to deal with your health care providers concerning your treatment both during incapacity and at the end of life. People often delay planning their estate on the mistaken assumption that (i) they don’t have enough property to protect; or (ii) doing so will accelerate their death. Nothing could be further from the truth – failing to plan is planning to fail, so don’t wait to do your estate plan in order to protect yourself and your family.

Venezia’s is excited to be part of the Chandler community! We opened our 1st location in Tempe off Of Mill and Southern in August of 1998, just after I married my college sweetheart Jaime. We both graduated from ASU, and felt that Arizona was lacking in the pizza market. Pie ATM Debuts

The locally owned and operated bakery Pie Snob recently debuted their Chandler 24-hour pie ATM to supply the demand for their handmade pies. “We sell handmade from scratch just like what your grandma used to make,” said Miranda Grause, district manager of Pie Snob. “Every ingredient that you see- like the caramel, the whip-everything is handmade, even the crust, we hand roll that ourselves.” “The flavors that we typically carry in our ATM machines are just the weekly menu pies. We rotate our menu every Tuesday,” said Grause to ABC15. “We fill the vending machine two to three times a day.” Read more about Pie Snob’s 24hour pie ATM HERE.

DISABILITY EQUALITY CHANDLER CHAMBER DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

April 5, 1977 marked day one of sit-ins at Federal Health, Education, and Welfare offices across the nation. The most prominent office, in San Francisco, CA, was reviewing the implementation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 states “No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…”. On April 28, 1977, 23 days later, Section 504 was signed into law and the sit-in at the San Francisco Federal building ended. Thirteen years later, George H.W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which passed through the House of 20

“No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States... shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance…” Representatives and Senate, with vote counts of 377 to 28, and 91 to 6, respectively. The passing of the ADA was necessary to give disabled individuals access to all public entities and services. Times are changing, and the needs of the disabled community are continually shifting. For businesses to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities in their place of employment, they must listen to the needs of these employees, which may include

office equipment, office layout, and the ability to work from home. On Tuesday, July 26 from 8:00 to 9:30 AM, please join the Chandler Chamber’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Roundtable for a disability awareness workshop. Guests will hear from nationally renowned disabilities advocate, Judith Heumann who has been involved in the passing of legislation and policies to benefit individuals living with disabilities.
