PRESIDENT | CEO
In 2022, the Chandler Chamber implemented numerous programs and services to cultivate and solidify our relationship with not only our members, but all businesses in Chandler as we recover from the pandemic.
We have gained knowledge, we have changed in the face of adversity, and we have gained the tools required to make 2022 a positive journey.
The events of the past few years have demonstrated that the diverse challenges we faced as a nation are truly complex and require an effort to ensure that every person realizes the opportunity for justice. The Chandler Chamber stands behind our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion series to bring us all together, sharing and educating so that we may understand and appreciate each other.
Our goal for 2023 is to focus on our mission of providing unparalleled support for our businesses and to strengthen our community – now and in the future.
BOARD CHAIR
As we head into the new year, we are starting with one of my favorite Chamber events: Meet the Elected Officials Breakfast. This event brings together business, community, and government; we will have the opportunity to hear from our local, state, and federal elected officials. The 2023 edition of How We Stand, the Chamber’s award winning legislative agenda, will be revealed as well. This document is proof that the Chamber supports businesses taking an active part in advocacy at all levels.
Also in January is the Tri-City Economic Update hosted by the Chandler, Gilbert, and Queen Creek Chambers. The speakers will provide updates focused on major expansion projects in the East Valley. Our
community is moving forward in population, innovation and culture at a rapid pace and we have the opportunity to hear about it first-hand.
As evidenced by the Meet the Elected Officials Breakfast and TriCity Economic Update, the Chandler Chamber takes pride in connecting businesses and community leaders to catalyze growth. The Chamber has a variety of tools, such as networking events, roundtable discussions, and small business counseling, to support your business goals. We know from experience that when businesses succeed, our community thrives. Join me as we kick off 2023 and embark on this exciting journey to bring innovation, success and prosperity to Chandler. Happy New Year!

• To provide social activities for our members to bond and support one another
FROM THE MAYOR
On January 12, 2023, I will have the incredible honor of being sworn in again for another four-year term as Chandler’s Mayor. For two decades I have had a role in shaping the direction of our great city, first serving on three boards and
commissions, as a councilmember, and then as Mayor. Though we’ve come a long way since then, our work isn’t done. I remain fully committed to building an even better community and a stronger Chandler.
I’m fortunate to continue working with Councilmember Matt Orlando, who will also be sworn in as a councilmember in January. He has been a pillar in this community for decades and his experience is a tremendous asset to the Council.
I’m also excited to work with Council-elects Jane Poston and
Angel Encinas. Both are new to the political arena, and I welcome their fresh sets of eyes. They are both successful Chandler entrepreneurs, embedded in our community. They will bring such unique business perspectives to the Council.
Each new year brings with it an opportunity for positive changes to this wonderful community in which we live. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the city in 2023.

New team members join Chamber
After serving two internships with The Chamber, Shannon Watson has joined the team as the Data and Operations Support Coordinator. She graduated this December with honors and received her Bachelors of Science in Political Science with a minor in Women and Gender Studies from Arizona State University. Shannon’s first internship was Data and Research where she assisted with the development of the Chandler 100 Magazine. Her second internship was Public Policy and Government Relations, where she assisted in editing the award winning How We Stand legislative document. Shannon is excited to support her community and continue her work here at the Chamber.
Shannon is a Public Policy intern who is helping to organize and plan the “Meet the Elected Officials” Event. She is a proud Polish-American citizen and her passion for politics and international affairs has been greatly instilled in her since a young age. She is inspired to pursue politics more every day while observing increasing polarization, and unfortunately also observing decreasing active, meaningful change.
Currently a student at Northern Arizona University, Emilia is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, with a minor in public relations. In addition, she is President of Pi Sigma Alpha, an active Best Buddies ambassador, and a certified state provider to work with kids with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Vincent Harris is a First-Generation Jamaican from Florida. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History as well as a Mater’s in Health Administration from Florida Gulf Coast University.
After completing his studies, Vincent worked at a startup law firm dealing with Elder Law and Medicaid in Florida and obtained an Assisted Living Facility Administrator license. He partnered with many Assisted Living Facilities throughout the state of Florida to advocate for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients at a local and state level.
Vincent recently relocated to Arizona to advocate for changes within public policy and politics on every level. During his time in Arizona so far, he campaigned in local, state, and federal elections. He is currently a Public Policy Intern for the Chamber helping to organize the Meet the Elected Officials Breakfast.
ECONOMY IN 2023
What to Expect $
by Curtis Dubay CHIEF ECONOMIST U.S. Chamber of CommerceThe end of 2022 is shaping up to be strong, with fourth quarter growth projected to be over 2%. Here’s what the Chamber’s Chief Economists Committee predicts for the economic outlook in 2023.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently convened its Chief Economists Committee to discuss members’ outlooks for the economy in 2023. The committee consists of chief economists from member businesses and helps the Chamber formulate economic policies and analysis.
A Mild But Short Recession is Likely in 2023
The consensus among Committee Members is that the U.S. will experience a mild but short recession in the middle of 2023 caused by consumer and business spending falling because of rising interest rates. Further contributing to the downturn would be consumers finally exhausting historic savings built up during the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning they would no longer have that source
of money to keep spending at pace with inflation.
Businesses Less Likely to Pass Along Price Increases to Consumers
RSM’s Chief Economist Joe Brusuelas noted that businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to pass along higher prices for their inputs to customers through price increases. This was made clear in the RSM-U.S. Chamber of Commerce U.S. Middle Market Business Index:
“Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the pricing data is that the ability to pass along price increases to consumers is beginning to ebb. Roughly 53% of respondents noted an increase in prices received, down from 69% in the third quarter.”
This will likely mean shrinking profit margins for businesses.
How Businesses and Families Will Weather the Downturn
Although we are likely to have a mild recession, there is always pain caused by a decline in the economy. Members pointed out this will likely be the first recession in memory where there will be no extra
assistance, other than automatic stabilizers, from fiscal or monetary policy.
Congress sending recession relief to families and the Federal Reserve loosening monetary policy would both make inflation worse, and hence be self-defeating. Families and businesses will have to weather the economic downturn with the resources already available to them.
The Fed’s Role
Members of the committee also agreed that inflation will come down significantly next year. They see the Federal Reserve’s anti-inflationary policies curbing demand and tightening financial conditions enough to start bringing prices down much closer to the Fed’s 2% inflation target over the course of 2023.
Other Economic Issues to Watch
Other economic issues noted in the meeting that bear watching in the year ahead:
Worker Shortages Still Matter
We have more than 3.3 million workers missing from the labor force based on labor force
participation rates and 4.3 million more job openings than unemployed workers. Businesses are still struggling to get the workers they need, even while inflation receives most of the attention from policymakers. Committee members highlighted the ongoing problem:
- The food service industry is still short about 300,000 workers
There is a massive shortage of skilled workers, including in fields such as auto mechanics. This, in turn, creates issues for a variety of industries reliant on these skilled trade workers.
Consumers are still spending
Consumers still have buying power because wages are rising, albeit less than inflation, but they have savings and available credit to fill the gap. However, those savings are dwindling, and available credit is shrinking, which is why many economists see a recession coming.
Other interesting observations by the Committee Members on spending include:
- Consumers are – as expected coming out of the pandemic – shifting their spending from goods to experiences.
- Inflation is driving down how much consumers are buying, but they are spending more in total dollars. For instance, they are buying fewer items when they go to a quick service restaurant, foregoing things like an extra bag of chips or fries, but because of higher prices, they are still spending more per visit than they did before the pandemic.
Flexible work and alternative forms of income are changing the economy As inflation remains a problem,
people are turning towards alternative forms of income to help make ends meet. This rise in gig work and other forms of alternative income earning are changing how our economy operates and contributing to the worker shortage.
As inflation remains a problem, people are turning towards alternative forms of income to help make ends meet. This rise in gig work and other forms of alternative income earning are changing how our economy operates and contributing to the worker shortage.
Homeowners are increasingly
particularly for heating.
For example, New England is likely to see shortages and much higher prices for natural gas and home heating oil.
We’re beginning to see the effects of Europe ending the importation of Russian oil and natural gas. We do not know the full consequences of this yet.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is low which means there likely are not enough reserves available for release into the market to help alleviate high prices should oil and gas spike again.
looking to use their homes to earn additional income. For instance, bookings through Airbnb are up and homeowners are using this added source of income to keep up with rising home prices.
More than two million people are earning more than $100,000 a year as influencers. These people are most likely not working traditional full-time jobs and thus “absent” from the workforce as we previously conceived it.
We are not out of the woods on energy
Gas prices have fallen recently, however Committee economists see energy prices rising again,
The Bottom Line and The Good News
The U.S. economy is in for a bumpy 2023. Businesses should be prepared, and as always, also be prepared for those unexpected events that come out of nowhere.
The good news is that 2022 is shaping to end strong, with growth in the fourth quarter projected to perhaps be over 2%. And the economy is on sound footing once the volatility caused by high inflation ends.

Councilmember Orlando was elected to two-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy, governance and membership activities.
NLC is the largest and most representative organization for cities, their elected leaders and municipal staff, and advocates for city priorities in Washington by building strong federal-local partnerships.
“After serving consecutive terms this past year as the Chair on the NLC’s Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Relations (FAIR) federal advocacy committee, I’m thrilled to change roles and represent the City of Chandler on the NLC Board of Directors,” said Councilmember
Upgrade Your Hydration with Alkaline Water
Everyone knows that drinking enough water is good for your health. Here in the desert, staying properly hydrated is important year-round. It can improve your productivity, mood, & energy level. Drinking alkaline water can enhance that and provide even more benefits.
Potential benefits of alkaline water are increased energy, improved metabolism and better digestion. Some studies show improved hydration and relief from acid reflux & heartburn. It may even slow bone loss and help manage diabetes.
Even with a growing number of advocates, many people don’t know what Alkaline water
is. Simply put, it’s water with a higher pH than regular drinking water along with minerals like calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Regular drinking water has a pH of around 6-7. Most Alkaline water is 8.5 or higher.
The best place to get great tasting alkaline water is Crystal Water and Ice on the N/E corner of Pecos and McQueen. You’ll find two fast filling stations that provide delicious Alkaline water at a pH of 9.4. No need to leave your bottles behind to be filled and picked up later like some other stores. You’ll be in and out fast with your great tasting Alkaline water.
Orlando. “I will continue to advocate for our residents and guide effective policy decisions to benefit our region — leading to a better quality of life locally.”
As a member of the board, Councilmember Orlando will meet in March, June and November to guide NLC’s strategic direction. Board members are selected by a 15-member nominating committee and are confirmed by a vote from NLC’s membership at the organization’s annual business meeting.
More than 3,000 mayors, councilmembers and other delegates from nearly every state and the District of Columbia convened in Kansas City for City Summit. Local leaders are on the frontlines of the nation’s most pressing challenges and are working hard to pioneer innovative solutions that move our cities, towns, and villages forward.
