It is clear that we need to create belonging in our cities, in our schools and in our workplaces. The Chandler Chamber of Commerce has taken the lead to prepare and educate our business community.

This year at the Legislature, there has been over 1,000 bills introduced to date.

As an advocate for business, we continue to monitor and keep you informed on the issues that affect business at the local, state, and federal levels of government. In fact, at February’s Public Policy, we will hear updates from Senator Bowie, Representative Jermaine, and Representative Epstein addressing some of the 1,000 bills and what each of them as working on. We will also have the City of Chandler Budget Manager, Matt Dunbar talking about proposed changes in the city fees as it relates to the Cost-ofService Survey. Water, solid waste, and trash are a few of the areas looking at increases that will not only effect residents but also have a direct effect on business. There will be an opportunity to ask questions to each of our speakers.

Last week, Gov. Doug Ducey unveiled his final budget proposal as Arizona’s commander-in-chief—a $14.25 billion spending plan that boosts state spending by $1.4 billion, roughly 9% over the budget enacted last year. About $364 million of that new spending will be ongoing, with nearly a third going toward new tax cuts.

EXECUTIVE BUDGET SUMMARY The governor’s budget proposal essentially serves as his opening bid as he’ll spend the coming months negotiating a final budget with the GOP-controlled Legislature. At this point, the only thing we know for certain is that lawmakers are required to ink a plan into law by June 30.

Workforce and hiring continue to be a challenge for businesses of all sizes. February 22, we have invited City of Chandler Economic Development Director, Micah Miranda to address these issues in Chandler and how we are addressing the business needs. Intel will be talking about how they are addressing workforce at the local level and long-term solutions across the nation.

During the coming year you will see a broad range of touches into many areas of the Chamber that will bring to light this important issue. We are especially proud to offer DE&I training as part of our Community Foundation Leadership Institute. This year’s participants will be exposed to valuable DE&I instruction that will culminate with a program certification in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

The quarterly Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Round Tables feature relevant speakers and topics that evoke discussion and the sharing of ideas.

As you can see, the Chandler Chamber’s programming for the coming year touches many facets of our businesses, our schools and community. We look forward to creating many other ways in which we can incorporate and promote “belonging” in Chandler.

ow, the excitement is starting tobuild toward the annual Chandler Ostrich Festival at Tumbleweed Park. This year will be bigger than ever because we are not doing just one week, but we are adding a second exciting weekend. Seven days to entertain and to eat your way to happiness, March 11-13 and March 17-20.

For our Chamber members, you know this is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it helps fund so many great programs that we offer here at the Chamber.

To make this a success we need everyone’s help as a volunteer. We have seven days, so you have plenty of choices and times where you can give us your great support. At the same time, when your shift is over or before, you can enjoy all the fun family friendly activities.

The bands for the two weekends are: Walker Hayes, Nelly, The Band Perry, Uncle

Kracker, The Four Tops & The Temptations, Flo Rider, and The Spazmatics. They are a very diverse group of acts to cater to all the different residents of the valley. I am super excited to rock out on several of these nights!

Our Ostrich Festival committee led by Ralph Guariglio and Michael Garza have done an amazing job as usual in putting this together.

We are still also looking for sponsors so if you or your company or someone you know would like to be a sponsor, it isn’t too late to get in on it. Thousands and thousands of people will be attending these two weekends, so what a great way to have your business showcased. Just contact the office for more information.

CHAMBER NON-PROFITSPOTLIGHT ICAN Provides Positive Programs for Youth ICAN: Positive Programs for Youth is a free afterschool program located in downtown Chandler. ICAN has been serving the Chandler community for over 30 years, striving to fulfill the organization’s mission to empower youth to be productive, self-confident and responsible members of the community. ICAN operates three sites – ICAN Main, ICAN @ Galveston and ICAN @ Hartford – serving over 500 youth each year. Youth receive snacks 4

Chandler Chamber CONNECT | February 2022

and dinner daily, along with homework help, literacy lessons, S.T.E.A.M. activities, and structured sports & recreation. All of ICAN’s activities are focused on the 5C’s of Positive Youth Development – connection, confidence, character, contribution and competence.

ICAN’s in-school life skills training lessons reach another 2,000 youth each year at Chandler Jr. High Schools. ICAN is a qualified charitable organization for the tax credit program – couples can

donate up to $800 and individuals can donate up to $400 and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state income tax. Learn more or donate at www.icanaz.org/ taxcredit.

The State of the City will highlight successes in business attraction, expansion and retention as well as investment by private office and industrial developments creating spaces for new job growth. Building upon recent announcements from EMD Electronics, Skin Script and Stryker, I’ll discuss upcoming initiatives and investments in our employment corridors for 2022.

The State of the City also kicks-off a year-long Chandler Changemakers campaign, highlighting amazing youth making a difference as entrepreneurs, awarding-winning inventors, champions, survivors and charitable contributors. A youth art contest showcasing entries from students ages 6 – 18 years old will illustrate what Chandler looks like through their eyes, awarding monetary scholarships for the top three entries. MEMBERNEWS Environmental Education Center changes name to Chandler Nature Center

The Environmental Educations Center (EEC) is getting a new name.

Park & Recreation Board members along with City Council unanimously agreed last year to rename the facility the Chandler Nature Center.

The new name reflects the center’s mission to connect children and adults to the natural world and its many inhabitants, but also broadens the scope of recreation classes and events that can be offered in a dynamic outdoor setting. Ariane Francis, Recreation Coordinator II and manager of the center, located at Veterans Oasis Park, described the rebranding as a “subtle but very important shift” in the center’s identity.

2022 Maricopa County StandDown The Maricopa StandDown is set to be February 10-11 at the Arizona State Fair Grounds Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Each year, they bring together community organizations and service providers to help provide critical care and services for our community’s most at-risk Veterans.

BLACKHISTORYMONTH DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION

by Dr. Cindy Banton, Avid Consulting | Dr. William Crawford, DW Consulting Group Celebrating Black History Month is where we honor and celebrate Black Americans’ contributions, accomplishments, and endeavors in our country. Although its origins date back to 1915, President Reagan issued Presidential Proclamation 5443, which proclaimed that “the foremost purpose of Black History Month is to make all Americans aware of this struggle for freedom and equal opportunity.”

This year’s theme is “The Importance of Black Health and Wellness. According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History,® “The

theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but others such as birth workers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, and herbalists throughout the African Diaspora.

In order to foster good health and wellness Black people have embarked on self-determination, mutual aid and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and nursing schools (i.e., Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, Provident Hospital and Training School, Morehouse School of Medicine,

etc.) and community clinics. Clinics were established by individuals, grassroots organizations and mutual aid societies, such as the African Union Society, National Association of Colored Women and Black Panther Party, to provide spaces for Black people to counter the economic and health disparities and discrimination that are found at mainstream institutions.”

The celebration of Black History Month aligns with the Chamber’s vision of a fully diverse business environment where all belong and can thrive.

2023 Incoming Board Chair

Warde Nichols is a successful business entrepreneur who has owned and operated small businesses for over 20 years. He also served four terms in the Arizona House of Representatives. While in the House, he served as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and Rules Committee among other accomplishments. Warde has the proven ability to successfully bring groups together to focus on solutions to current challenges we face.

At Arizona State University, Warde works closely with various business and civic organizations throughout the East Valley and Pinal County and acts as a liaison with state and local governments. He is a lifelong learner and loves learning and growing with his work at ASU. Warde is a fifth-generation Arizona native who grew up in the East Valley and currently lives in Queen Creek with his wife, Paula, and their children.

As owner of J2 Media, a video production and communications company, Jane enjoys taking complicated and difficult topics and making them interesting and easy to understand. Her career has sent her across the country, producing award winning videos, and working to tell clients’ brand stories.

She founded J2 Media with her husband Jason Heinkel 21 years ago, the year they were married.

Working for two decades together they have built a business that prides itself on a culture of telling “Your Story. Your Way”, meaning they find ways for the customer to be the star, then get out of the way.

She enjoys building and creating relationships through her Chamber membership, and welcomes any input into how the Board can better serve its members!

Peter Sciacca has been serving the community over 2 decades in varied capacities, including 10 years on the Downtown Chandler Community Partnership as member & Chair, 8 years on the Chandler Architectural Review Committee as a member & Chair, 4 years on the Downtown Gilbert Redevelopment Commission as member & Chair, as well as 2 HOA’s. After living in Taiwan 10 years, Peter and his family moved to Chandler and began rehabilitating historic buildings in Chandler, home to fun restaurants and bars, as well as running his handblown glassware import business for over 23 years. That business supplied over 3000 restaurants and liquor companies across the US with custom glassware, also spawning a retail gallery in downtown.
