This month, the Chandler Chamber celebrates their accomplishments by observing National Small Business Week from April 28 to May 4. Small businesses, entrepreneurs, sole proprietorships: no matter what you make or who you serve, we are proud of your contributions to our East Valley community. Support a small business this week, and start a resolution of giving back to Chandler businesses all year long.
In May, the Chandler Chamber is partnering with Chandler City Lifestyle Magazine to recognize the 2024 Women of Chandler. Award winners will answer questions about their career journeys and share insights into community leadership. Registration is open for this Tuesday, May 21 event.
Later in the month, our Diversity Equity Inclusion & Belonging Committee is hosting a free roundtable discussion with Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) leaders. Their invaluable insight will help you improve your workplace by (1) recognizing & overcoming AAPI stereotypes, (2) celebrating local AAPI community members, and (3) sharing a crash course on intercultural communication.
I am also pleased to announce that our 37th Annual Chandler Chamber Community Awards will be on Thursday, May 30, and tickets are on sale now! Our job titles and educational degrees frequently emphasize the technical and hard skills we acquire, yet it’s often the cultivation of soft skills in the latter stages of our careers that truly paves the path to success. While proficiency in technical aspects lays a solid foundation, it’s the ability to communicate effectively, collaborate seamlessly, and navigate complexities with emotional intelligence that distinguishes exceptional professionals. These soft skills, honed over time, not only facilitate teamwork and leadership but also foster resilience and adaptability in the face of evolving challenges. Therefore, while technical expertise may open doors, it’s the mastery of soft skills that ultimately propels individuals toward enduring success in their careers.
Soft skills are of paramount importance in today’s fast-paced professional landscape. Individuals with strong interpersonal skills often tend to be more empathetic, understanding, and supportive, which fosters a sense of trust between employees and teams in the workplace. This trust is the foundation upon which effective collaboration is built. When team members trust and respect each other, they are more likely to freely communicate, share ideas, and work together towards common goals. This boosts team morale but also increases productivity through collaboration and knowledge sharing, ultimately leading to high employee satisfaction rates.
Moreover, the modern work environment is characterized by constant change and uncertainty. Businesses increasingly prioritize collaboration, adaptability, and creativity to stay competitive. In such a dynamic landscape, individuals with welldeveloped soft skills are better equipped to navigate and thrive. They possess the ability to adapt to new technologies, processes, and ways of working, which allows them to (continued)
(continued) stay ahead of the curve and contribute to the growth and success of their organizations.
To illustrate the significance of soft skills in the modern workplace, let’s consider a specific example. Imagine a project team working on a complex task with tight deadlines. The team members possess the technical knowledge required to complete the project, but without strong communication and collaboration skills, they may struggle to effectively coordinate their efforts. However, if each team member can effectively communicate their ideas, actively listen to others, and collaborate seamlessly, they can overcome challenges, make informed decisions, and deliver high-quality results. In this scenario, the mastery of soft skills becomes the catalyst for success.
While technical expertise is undoubtedly important, it is the development and mastery of soft skills that truly set individuals apart in the modern workplace. Interpersonal skills such as effective communication, collaboration, and emotional intelligence foster trust, enhance teamwork, and drive productivity and innovation. Additionally, soft skills enable individuals to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing work environment, ensuring they remain adaptable and innovative. Therefore, investing in the development of soft skills is of utmost importance for professionals seeking enduring success in their careers.
In a world marked by rapid change and complex challenges, the call for people to engage in community service and public service has never been more urgent. Individuals who identify as Asian American, Pacific Islander and/or Native Hawaiian (AAPINH) should consider embracing opportunities for involvement and service. Not only do these activities enrich our lives, but they also play a pivotal role in driving economic development and fostering a thriving, interconnected community in the City of Chandler.
Beyond involvement, community engagement is a commitment to understanding, advocating for and uplifting the voices and experiences of those around us. In a broader society that often perpetuates stereotypes and marginalizes minority voices, finding a sense of belonging within our communities is essential. Through community engagement, we can find opportunities for connection and belonging. We create spaces where our voices are heard, valued and amplified—a crucial foundation for personal and collective growth.
Community engagement plays a crucial role in driving economic development and prosperity. Engaged communities are more resilient, innovative and cohesive—qualities that are essential for (continued)
(continued) attracting investment, fostering entrepreneurship and creating sustainable growth. From blending technology with traditional arts to incorporating sustainability practices into cultural preservation efforts, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders are at the forefront of creating meaningful change. By actively participating in and contributing to our communities, we honor our heritage while amplifying our voices to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
One potential path forward is to join the Chandler Chamber of Commerce’s DEI&B Committee. Participating in this committee provides a valuable networking platform where members can connect with other local entrepreneurs, professionals and potential customers. The committee offers a variety of resources and support services to help members thrive, including the opportunity to advocate for the interests of its members.
Our communities are not just the places we call home; they’re the heartbeats of our heritage and the pillars of our support. We have a responsibility to ourselves to actively participate in service and strive to make a difference in the world. Together, we can create inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, heard and valued.

Aaron and Tony Gonzales, founders of Slick Barrier, to be fireside chat guests at May 1’s free financing event
“If it can’t climb up glass, it can’t climb up Slick Barrier.”
That’s Tony Gonzalez, co-founder of Slick Barrier: a patented revolutionary barrier system that stops crawling pests from getting inside your home. Spiders, Cockroaches, scorpions, ants, rodents - if it crawls, their clear coating will stop them.
Tony Gonzales and his brother, Aaron Gonzales, will be the Chandler Chamber’s featured fireside guests at Wednesday, May 1’s free Entrepreneurship Event, where small business owners will be connected with finance experts to learn about securing capital for their companies. (continued)
(continued) These financing experts include:
• Cecilia Ashe, VP and COO for Landings Credit Union
• Rashi Duttagupta, Executive Director for Arizona Microcredit Initiative
• George Kimble, Business Analyst for the Maricopa SBDC
• Geoffrey McGivern, Senior VP of Business Development at TMC Financing
• Lucia DelGrosso-Plouffe, Small Business Banker for Wells Fargo
Tony and his brother / co-founder, Aaron, started Slick Barrier after finding one of their homes was infested with Arizona Bark Scorpions, and after finding that traditional pest control methods didn’t keep those critters out. They partnered with their friend, Christian, to develop the Slick Barrier system.
The team pitched Slick Barrier on Shark Tank. They received an offer from Lori Greiner. Now, their business has grown exponentially, and, to give back to Chandler small businesses and entrepreneurs, they’ll share how they were able to successfully finance their company.
“In the hustle of entrepreneurship, we’ve learned firsthand that having a supportive community is key. We’re all about creating a space where local entrepreneurs can thrive, connect, and lift each other up. Because let’s face it, building a business is about more than just making money—it’s about building relationships and giving back. We’re pumped to join the Chandler Chamber and spread our story, inspiring other dreamers in our neck of the woods,” said Aaron Gonzales, Cofounder of Slick Barrier.
After May 1’s free financing event, select participants will be able to pitch their business to a panel of judges on Wednesday, June 5 for a chance to win over $3,000 in cash and prizes, awarded by the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
To have a chance of pitching for cash and prizes, participants must have attended the first two Chandler Chamber Entrepreneurship Series events on April 10, 2024 and May 1, 2024.

Congress, notorious for its cumbersome nature, finds itself increasingly challenged with the daunting task of simply keeping the government operational. In March, Congress managed to pass two phases of funding, with the second part narrowly crossing the March 22nd midnight deadline. This $1.2 trillion measure aimed to fund crucial departments like Defense and Homeland Security, along with other essential government functions, although arriving already six months into the fiscal year. While imperative to prevent a government shutdown, the hurried passage of this funding package underscored the mounting frustrations within the Republican party. Members, like Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana, clamor for reform, advocating for guaranteed 72-hour review periods for single-subject legislation, alongside assured debate and amendments on the floor.
However, the delay in passing the last funding package means Congress is already lagging in negotiations for its looming September deadline. Under Speaker McCarthy’s tenure, attempts to amend spending bills with reduced funding led to prolonged debates and negotiations between chambers, ultimately grinding the process to a halt. This impasse forced then-Speaker McCarthy to acquiesce, mere hours before an imminent and costly government shutdown, by agreeing to a short-term funding extension. The last time the government shutdown in December 2018, it lasted a costly 35 days, resulting in permanent losses of $3 billion for Americans. (continued)
(continued) Caught between competing interests, McCarthy’s capitulation cost him the speakership. Now, Rep. Johnson faces similar pressures as he navigates the delicate balance between appeasing staunch fiscal conservatives within his party and averting catastrophic and costly government shutdowns.
As Congress reconvenes from a two-week recess, prospects for change in this process appear unlikely. With the election cycle gaining momentum, the appropriations process is likely to take a back seat, further complicating efforts to address looming funding deadlines.
A series of educational courses and forums are empowering businesses with practical insights and strategies to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and propel the growth of their businesses. These classes are serving a diverse sector of entrepreneurs and businesses in our community.
We’re proud to partner with the Chandler Chamber and co-sponsor the three-part Entrepreneurship Series that provides tools for start-up businesses to get their company off the ground.
The first event held in April focused on marketing, a second event held in May addressed financing and the final event to be held June 5 will highlight pitching their business to investors.
We’re also working with DAS Foundation and the East Valley Hispanic Chamber to offer three essential business courses in Spanish this spring. These five-to-ten-week courses are addressing business fundamentals, finance and digital marketing and sales. Providing these courses in Spanish offers support for entrepreneurs to access essential business information in their native language.
We recognize the importance of providing resources and education to entrepreneurs and small businesses. The growth of small and minority businesses results in economic prosperity for all in our community.
In the Chamber’s February newsletter, I addressed amendments we’ve made to Chandler’s Infill Incentive Plan and Infill Incentive District to support future development projects. The Infill Incentive District encompasses all areas of Chandler north of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway.
On May 16, we’ll hold a lunchtime forum at Chandler City Hall to provide an overview of the recently approved Infill Incentive Plan. Attendees will hear about infill and development trends from expert panel members representing a developer, broker and land use attorney.
I’m grateful for the multitude of forums and programs available in Chandler to support the establishment and growth of entrepreneurs and small businesses. The resources available through the Chandler Chamber and its members are essential to the health and prosperity of our business community. We’re proud to partner with you to bolster the success of entrepreneurs and Chandler businesses.

Now that we’ve had a chance to sit one-on-one with Chandler City Council candidates, it’s time to bring them together in a free May 7 debate, open to the public.
The debate, hosted by the Chandler Chamber Good Government Committee, is a civil opportunity for candidates to discuss their ideas, policy positions, and current local issues. The Committee has created questions in a non-biased and business-oriented fashion, for the purpose of defining the candidate’s views on the government and its role in the business community.
The state’s fiscal health is in question at the Arizona State Legislature, with projections of a budget deficit in 2024. This deficit stems from revenue losses and unforeseen expenses, as lawmakers begin the allimportant task of passing a state budget.
At a recent Policy Impact Series, Arizona’s Legislative District 12Representative Stacey Travers, Representative Patty Contreras, and Senator Mitzi Epstein – gave a mid-session update on their legislative agenda and the looming budget discussions.
As the business community continues to rally support for the continuation of the Arizona Commerce Authority, Chandler’s Legislative District 12 remains strong in their belief that the Authority must continue to exist, and provide additional small business resources and drive economic development for the state.
Additionally, lawmakers spoke about the impact of ancillary sunset audits on government agencies. Sunset audits are typical in nature; however, the timeline of these audits have become more brief, and place additional strain on the Auditor General’s time and resources. Lawmakers emphasized the critical importance of long-term planning, and highlighted the inefficiency of short-term continuations in budgetary processes. (continued)
(continued) Additionally, lawmakers spoke about the impact of ancillary sunset audits on government agencies. Sunset audits are typical in nature; however, the timeline of these audits have become more brief, and place additional strain on the Auditor General’s time and resources. Lawmakers emphasized the critical importance of long-term planning, and highlighted the inefficiency of short-term continuations in budgetary processes.
More and more, conversations within the business community inevitably shift towards workforce. In a similar effort, the Legislature is considering several bills to bolster workforce development. Among them, are several bills that create an interstate compact for specific professions. This approach allows individuals with the appropriate certifications or credentials to do business in Arizona, without government red tape. Lawmakers were particularly proud of a measure that would enhance military programs to help veterans transition into civilian life after service.
Furthermore, the business community continues to draw attention to education funding and the larger education system. Proposition 123 is a ballot measure that uses funds from the State Land Trust to invest in K-12 public education. More specifically, Proposition 123 temporarily increases the percent of funds available to use from 2.5% to 6.9% for 10 years. Increasing teacher pay has been among the top priorities for both parties in the Legislature this session.
In their final remarks, lawmakers emphasized the challenges ahead, and the importance of bipartisan collaboration in a divided government.
The Chandler Chamber Community Foundation Leadership Institute Class 40 completed another successful issue day! April’s issue day highlighted Government at both the City and State level. The focus of this issue day was to learn about Government programs and services. Class 40 was able to get an in-depth look at the legislative process and how it affects our community as a whole.
The class visited the State Capitol and received a Tour of the House of Representatives and State Senate. In addition, they heard a very informative update from Tracy Lopes, Deputy Chief of Staff, office of Governor Hobbs. After returning to Chandler, they had City Government 101 with the Chandler City Manager, followed up with Q & A with Chandler City Council.

The City of Chandler has contracted with Sunland Asphalt to construct improvements to Boston Street, between San Marcos Place and California Street. Improvements include full asphalt and subsurface removal and replacement as well as widening sidewalks on the north side of Boston, east of Oregon Street, and on the south side of Boston, west of Oregon Street, with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and pedestrian crosswalk improvements, and a ride share/drop off area. Construction is expected to begin the week of May 5 and be complete in October 2024.
To accommodate Downtown Chandler visitors, this work is being conducted during the summer and has been phased to accommodate one-way traffic (westbound only) on Boston Street, west of San Marcos Place. Work will be conducted one phase at a time with tentative dates provided (see graphic). Dates may need to shift slightly due to weather, resource availability, or scheduling; however, the sequence will remain the same to maintain access at the alley west of San Marcos, and (continued)
(continued) to San Marcos Place and Oregon Street.
Once all four phases are complete, crews will need to complete work in the roadway, which may require a short-term closure of Boston Street for approximately two weeks. Details will be provided as the work is scheduled.
Thank you for your patience during this work.
Salt River Project (SRP) announced last week that Apple has joined as a partner supporting SRP’s Resilient Water and Forest Initiative, part of a continuing effort to ensure water resiliency. The company will support the initiative’s restoration of nearly 30,000 acres of forests over the next 10 years, helping strengthen a critical water supply for Central Arizona communities, including the Town of Payson and the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The project centers around the strategic thinning of forests located in northern Arizona that are at a high risk for severe wildfires. This includes forests around the C.C. Cragin Dam and Reservoir near Payson, Ariz., an area which supplies water to the C.C. Cragin Reservoir.
Apple’s support of the thinning project is expected to result in 1.8 billion gallons of water benefits over the next 20 years.

The Chandler City Council recently voted to establish a Historic Preservation (HP) District zoning overlay within a portion of Downtown Chandler’s Silk Stocking neighborhood. The HP overlay encompasses 23 designated properties along Washington and Coronado streets whose property owners signed a waiver to adhere to the historic preservation ordinance and its accompanying design guidelines for property maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation.
Of the many historic homes within Silk Stocking, the majority exhibit the “Early Ranch” style with examples of Craftsman, Ranch, and Spanish Colonial Revival.
The request for this new historic district was a grassroots effort led by Silk Stocking neighbors Melisa Lalich and Cheryl Bell — spanning years of conversations with fellow property owners, Planning Division staff, the Historic Preservation Commission, and the Chandler City Council. In fact, neighborhood involvement from Silk Stocking community leaders was instrumental in the creation and adoption of Chandler’s historic preservation ordinance that established the Historic Preservation Commission and various historic designations recognized by the city.
Chandler’s City Code requires 60% of property owners to sign a declaration and waiver as required to be included in the HP district. These properties must have sufficient historic integrity. There are a total of 39 homes designated as contributing properties within the Silk Stocking neighborhood. With the 23 properties noted above having signed waivers, along with Washington Street’s unique hardscape being considered a historic improvement, the 60% threshold was met.
Clarity begins with defining an organization’s vision, mission and values. Everything, and I really do mean everything, done within an organization must align with the company’s True North so that everyone understands what they are all working to accomplish.
Once the foundation is established, the “how” and the “who” must be determined. Specifically, what is the work that needs to be done in order to accomplish the company’s mission, and who will do the work. Creating an org chart is one of the best ways to clarify the roles and accountability framework that the organization will use to maintain alignment towards accomplishing the shared mission.
Next is aligning the right people to the right roles based on each individual’s unique set of skills and abilities. One of my favorite tools to determine your team’s strengths at work is the Working Genius assessment by Patrick Lencioni of The Table Group. It’s a quick activity to give everyone on your team an understanding of their gifts and frustrations, specifically in relation to how they work, so they can better experience fulfillment and dignity in their roles.
Once your team is set, it’s time to determine the best processes, systems and technology that will enable your team to complete their work as efficiently as possible. Documenting best practices is key to ensuring knowledge is quickly and easily shared amongst team members and to prevent single points of failure.
Lastly, a growth oriented organization must invest in their team by offering ongoing training and regular feedback. Recognizing and rewarding performance, keeping in mind this doesn’t just apply to numbers but also to the impact an individual has to team morale and engagement, reinforces clarity to the entire organization on what success looks like in your company.
Clear is kind - it’s such a simple phrase but it perfectly describes how to ensure your team operates in such a way that not only allows your organization to succeed, but also creates an atmosphere that encourages everyone to find value, joy and fulfillment every day.
SRP has provided water and power to the Valley for more than 100 years, and that experience continues to serve our customers well.
SRP and our 5,000 employees have long been recognized as one of the top utilities in the nation and we are at the forefront of driving extraordinary changes to the power grid, our watershed and the greater Phoenix community while always doing right by our customers.
This means ensuring reliable, affordable and sustainable power and water now and for generations to come.
As a not-for-profit, community-based utility, SRP has among the lowest electricity rates in the southwestern United States and the lowest rates of any major utility in the state. This can be attributed to careful planning by the company and our publicly elected Board of Directors, and our customers have made it clear that we must continue to prioritize affordability and reliability even as we substantially grow our electric system.
SRP is taking significant, industry-leading steps to decarbonize the power it generates for one of the fastest-growing service territories in the country. In the last year alone, we’ve doubled the amount of utility-scale solar energy on the grid and are proud of the fact that our customers are benefiting from enough clean energy to (continued)
(continued) power nearly 500,000 homes. Five additional solar facilities are currently under development. When they are operational by the end of 2027, nearly half of our generation will be carbon free.
And we aren’t close to being done. Our Board recently approved more ambitious sustainability goals including net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To help reach this goal and meet the projected 56% increase in energy needed to serve our customers over the next 10 years while also retiring most of our coal generation, SRP will double the size of our current electrical system. We’ll do this by adding new carbon-free generation and new storage resources by 2035.
To maintain a balanced, low-cost grid and to meet the unique challenges of our Valley, new fast-ramping natural gas units will also be part of SRP’s future generation mix. This technology allows SRP to meet our customers’ energy needs and better integrate intermittent renewables, which are critical to maintaining our industry-leading reliability that helps keep our customers safe, especially during Arizona’s hot summer days (and nights).
SRP will also continue to support our growing number of customers who choose to add rooftop solar and batteries to their homes. We offer a variety of ways to help evaluate potential projects and avoid scams, including a rooftop solar calculator and a list of preferred solar installers.
SRP was created when a group of Phoenix-area landowners pledged their land as collateral for a federal loan to build Theodore Roosevelt Dam, establishing a regular flow of water to the Valley and ensuring our long-term growth.
SRP now supplies water to almost half of the Phoenix region. Even though our water comes from a watershed that is expected to be less impacted by climate change than the Colorado River, we continue to collaborate with state agencies, cities and tribes to develop programs and infrastructure that will help maximize the Valley’s future water supply. (continued)
(continued) These include increasing storage capacity on the Verde River and the SRP Central Arizona Project Canal Interconnection, allowing water to be moved to communities that need it. We are also seeking approval to extend the amount of time SRP can hold water in a portion of the Flood Control Space at Roosevelt Dam to put more of it to use, particularly during times of heavy precipitation like we experienced last winter.
SRP and our partners will continue to plan for future growth and variable climate conditions to help ensure reliable and well-managed surface water and groundwater supplies.
While we’ve experienced incredible change over the last 100 years, one thing has remained constant: We are driven to always make decisions in the best interests of our customers and the communities we serve. This commitment is ongoing and will become even more important to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable power and water as we address critical challenges facing our company and our state.
Teams from AZFirst—an Arizona 501(c)3 organization supporting FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)—took home top honors at the recent FIRST World Championship in Houston, TX. Arizona students, representing less than 1 percent of competitors, earned the FIRST Impact Award, Engineering Inspiration Award, Judge’s Choice Award, Engineering Excellence Award, Rising Stars Award and were a part of the Winning Alliance.
FIRST is a program that connects students, educators, the community and the expanding technology industry in a collaborative effort to teach science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles through project-based robot building. These efforts culminate in a challenging, fast-paced, robotics competition. In addition, all high-school students who participate on a FIRST team are eligible to apply for more than $95 million in scholarship opportunities.
During the 2023-2024 season, Arizona supported 449 teams across the state through five different levels of competition. The season kicked off with the FIRST LEGO® League challenge release in August, followed by FIRST Tech Challenge in September and FIRST Robotics Competition in January, culminating in April with the 2024 FIRST Championship.
More than 3,500 FIRST Robotics Competition teams competed during the 2024 season in regional and district events. Internationally, 600 teams advanced to the championship, where they competed in rotating alliances, in one of eight divisions, for several matches to earn ranking points and advance to playoffs.
At the FIRST Championship, 13 teams from Arizona competed against 1,015 teams from 57 countries to earn recognition for design, excellence, creativity, outreach and teamwork.
