Grand Canyon University expanded its academic offerings by developing pathways to fill labor gaps in a growing metro Phoenix area. To help bolster Arizona’s workforce, GCU launched the Center for Workforce Development which encompasses the university’s Pre-Apprenticeship for Electricians and a new Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist Pathway. The CNC Pathway is in its first year and is a partnership with Benchmark Electronics, Modern Industries and Lux Precision Manufacturing that will prepare students to learn CNC, a high demand trade that uses computers to precision manufacture parts.
Students take four classes over the course of 15 weeks while getting hands-on experience as paid interns at Lux Precision Manufacturing, based in Canyon Ventures at the 27th Avenue complex, to produce parts for medical, aerospace and semiconductor industries, among others. It takes partnerships to make a difference. Lux, Benchmark and Modern Industries have all committed to hiring students who complete the program. The Pre-Apprenticeship for Electricians is in partnership with Rosendin Electric and Maricopa County. The electrician’s pathway prepares students to go directly into an employer apprenticeship program in the State of Arizona.
GCU’s Center for Workforce Development’s innovative and flexible apprenticeships and non-degree programs create additional pathways for those who may not be able to obtain a four-year degree. Combined with GCU’s current priority of educating teachers and nurses across the country through its ground and online baccalaureate and graduate programs, the university is bolstering Arizona’s workforce by addressing the ongoing labor shortages that plague not only the state, but the entire country. There is a critical need for skilled labor in the workforce. GCU is working as an industry problem-solver by addressing economic development through programs to educated new nurses, electricians and machinists.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (BLS) estimates job growth for electricians to increase nearly 6% in the next ten years, creating over 49,000 jobs for electricians. The BLS also states the CNC workforce is projected to create 90,000 job openings annually in the next decade. GCU’s Accelerated BS in Nursing site in Chandler is one of six sites already contributing to the national nursing shortage. By partnering with local healthcare systems in Arizona, Nevada and Utah, GCU is preparing students for the approximately 1.5 million additional nurses needed in the U.S. in the next five years, and according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 195,000 spots for registered nurses will be open in Arizona between now and 2031.
With over 300 academic programs and its new Center for Workforce Development pathway offerings, GCU recognizes the need for skilled labor in the workforce and is stepping up to address it.

Seton Catholic Preparatory is excited to introduce Ian Rodgers as its next Head Softball Coaching as it heads into the 2024-25 school year
“We couldn’t be more happy to have Coach Rodgers as part of our program here at Seton Catholic,” Athletic Director Jim Shewbridge said. “He has been a part of building strong club programs here in the East Valley and, most importantly, is a man of integrity that plans on building upon the legacy that is Seton Catholic Softball.”
Rodgers comes to Seton Catholic having had success as a head coach in the club softball scene over the past few years, most recently with the Athletics Mercado 14U East Valley program.
Rodgers steps into a Sentinel program that has had plenty of success under 38-year head coach Jerry Mullin, who retired at the end of the 2024 season. Rodgers hopes to build off of the foundations from Coach Mullin and continue to bring success to the softball team both on and off the field.

Dr. Michael M. Crow, president of Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe, AZ, has been named the 2024 Brock Prize in Education Innovation Laureate for his significant contributions in the field of education, including his role in reimagining the university as an institution that is both widely accessible and excellent in all measures.
Upon assuming the presidency of ASU in 2002, Michael Crow took this simple yet provocative idea and embarked on a mission to reanimate the purpose of higher education, shaping ASU into what is now known as the New American University. This innovative concept positioned ASU as an egalitarian, public research institution committed to access, inclusion, academic rigor, and positive societal impact.
The New American University model combines design thinking, technological innovation, and the intellectual capital of a top tier research-intensive university to dismantle barriers to education, unlock individual potential, and foster a more just, prosperous, and sustainable society. Key components of this groundbreaking innovation include the cultivation of a culture of continuous innovation, where risk-taking and entrepreneurship are not only encouraged but expected from faculty, staff, and students alike.
Flags were waved, glasses raised and happy tears of reminiscence were shed at our Chandler, AZ site over the past weeks. It’s not every day that a global semiconductor giant gets to celebrate three decades of greatness! The party in late June marked the anniversary of the first silicon that shipped from NXP’s Chandler Fab back in 1994.
For Geno Fallico, VP Chandler Manufacturing Operations, this milestone served as further proof that the Chandler team is a world-class collaborative force. “I am so honored to be part of this amazing NXP team,” he said at the lively event, which brought together employees from every decade of the site’s operations. “I am delighted and appreciative of the outstanding partnership between NXP and the City of Chandler, who joined our celebrations today.”
NXP’s Chandler Fab has expanded steadily since its first establishment and now occupies an impressive 80-acre site, with a total manufacturing space of 200,000 sq. ft. (18,600 sq. m). Today, some 750 employees keep the fab running smoothly. Chandler is now home to two of NXP’s five front-end fabs, delivering some of our most important products and technologies. As well as the Chandler Fab, we also have the world’s most advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) fab, the ECHO fab, opened in 2020.
Chandler is known by customers and colleagues alike as the source of automotive-quality (the highest benchmark of quality) output. It was here that the drive to establish a company-wide quality assurance program first began. Now known as the Total Quality Program, it began life as ‘The NXP Way,’ the assurance that the highest quality levels are a given, just how we do things … the NXP Way. And in a stroke of coincidence we were delighted to hear from the City of Chandler that a local byway will carry our name, making our mark and showing the way… you guessed it: The NXP Way!
“It meant a great deal for employees to receive such a heartfelt and thoughtful gift from the City of Chandler,” said Geno. “We thank you for your gift and your continued support.” Now, thanks to the “NXP Way,” everyone in the city looking for quality will find that their path leads to NXP!
Some 200 employees have been at the Chandler site in various capacities since the very beginning of our operations there. As Geno remarked at the party, “there must be something pretty special here that keeps people around for so long!” Greg Blazek, Equipment Engineer, is one of the original team at Chandler Fab, with this year marking his last with the company, as he takes a well-earned last walk along the NXP Way. “I’m retiring this year,” he announced at the celebration. “After 43 years at the same site, it’s time to go. I’ve enjoyed the job, the opportunities and the people tremendously. I’m going to miss the challenges, the encouragement, the work, but most of all, I’m going to miss the people here at Chandler Fab.

Our regional transportation system serves a significant role in connecting Chandler businesses and residents to the greater Phoenix area. It fosters economic prosperity and expands access to regional amenities, educational institutions, workforce talent and business opportunities.
The completion of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway in 2005 marked the culmination of the regional freeway network through Chandler. Now, nearly 20 years later, the Loop 202 is about to receive a major makeover.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and its contractors, Sundt Construction and C.S. Construction, are beginning work this month on a $200 million project between the Loop 101 Price Freeway/Price Road and Val Vista Drive that will continue into 2027.
This project will add two lanes in each direction between Price Road and Gilbert Road in Chandler. One lane in each direction will be added between Gilbert Road and Val Vista Drive in Gilbert. To accommodate these additional lanes, freeway bridges will be widened over Arizona Avenue, Union Pacific Railroad and the Consolidated Canal, located east of McQueen Road.
Freeway ramps will be improved to better accommodate drivers entering and exiting the Loop 202 through Chandler. Each ramp may close for up to 60 consecutive days as the access points are widened as they connect with the freeway. ADOT plans to stagger this work to avoid closing consecutive entrance or exit ramps in the same direction. This portion of the project is planned to begin in 2025 and continue into 2026, offering businesses some time to prepare.
Initial construction activities this month and in September will focus on the removal of the freeway’s current asphalt surface and establishing work zones in the corridor. This work will result in consecutive weekend closures in August and September. Construction activities this fall also will commence on the bridge widenings previously mentioned over Arizona Avenue, the railroad and canal.
We’re working with ADOT to coordinate construction activities and traffic impacts associated with existing projects, utility improvements and private development near the freeway corridor. We recognize that there are several active construction projects underway within the Price Corridor and other segments of the community.
We’re also collaborating with ADOT to help them connect with businesses and community stakeholders to share information about the project. ADOT plans to attend the Chamber’s Public Policy meeting in October to provide members with a project briefing. In the meantime, you can visit chandleraz.gov/loop202 for easy access to ADOT’s project information and to opt in for ADOT’s project updates by email.
Internships are a great way to get your foot in the door of professional work. They provide opportunities to gain real life experience and often lead to more career opportunities. Internships are a way to put classroom knowledge to work in real time, helping students better expand their understanding of what they have learned. Making those connections and learning how to problem solve helps students go the extra mile in their studies, as well as prepare them for their future careers.
Creating internship programs in your business not only benefits the next generation of workers, but also strengthens your employees and hiring processes. Internship programs create a strong hiring pipeline. Since you have taken the time to train them and helped give them a foundation of skills, they make the perfect candidates for jobs you might offer. You are able to evaluate in real time their skills and abilities while they are interns. Interns are also able to improve your current employee’s workload and efficiency.
In comparison to the in-depth and hands on work internships offer, externships are a more informal, less involved option.
Externships often consist of a shadowing program where students and young people can follow the day of an experienced professional. They are focused on learning through watching. Showing externs how to do the day-to-day of a job and letting them absorb the responsibility and workload there is to take on. Externships are a great way to better understand potential industries and businesses to work in. It is a way to keep learning outside of the physical classroom. Since externships are less formal than an internship, they can last anywhere from one day to a few weeks.
Externships have many of the same benefits to employers that internships provide. Including being able to see a pool of interested potential candidates for hiring and getting to know a little about their skills and experience outside of an interview setting. While externships often happen over a shorter period of time, they still provide a way for employees to showcase their experience and give back to their community of young professionals. This creates a positive environment that students feel welcome in, bolstering excitement and enthusiasm about your business.
Internships and externships are both avenues to gain valuable professional experiences, as well as grow businesses and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with the new generation of workers. These kinds of programs are crucial to helping educate and prepare students for the workforce. They are also opportunities to increase workplace efficiency and recruiting efforts.
Crews for the Boston Street Reconstruction Project continue work in Phase 5, with Boston Street closed to vehicular traffic from California to San Marcos through approximately August 15. Detour signage is in place to direct travelers around the closure, and pedestrian access is being maintained during this time. Staff, patrons, and deliveries accessing the Oregon Street Parking garage may do so from the south, and those accessing the alley west of San Marcos Place may do so from the north.
Scheduled to take place Wednesday, July 24, paving will take place on Boston Street, with utility adjustments (for manholes and valves), striping, and signage installation scheduled for the week of July 29. Boston Street will remain closed as crews remove, reconstruct subsurface, and reinstall brick pavers in Boston Street, just west of San Marcos Place, which is expected to take 1-2 weeks to complete.
In an effort to minimize the impacts to Downtown Chandler businesses, crews begin work at 3 a.m. each morning, working 9-hr days Monday through Thursday, and a 4-hr day on Fridays.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has selected Carly Wakefield, Vice President of Workforce Development & Government Relations of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, to participate in the tenth cohort of its premiere business leadership program. The Business Leads Fellowship Program trains and equips leaders from state and local chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, and trade associations with resources, access to experts, and a network of peers to build their capacity to address the most pressing education and workforce challenges.
“It is an incredible honor to be selected for the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Business Leads Fellowship Program. I am excited to further develop my expertise in education and workforce development to strengthen Chandler’s economic growth,” said Carly Wakefield, Vice President of Workforce Development & Government Relations of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce.
Following a competitive application and selection process, Carly Wakefield was selected along with 34 other state and local chamber executives, economic development professionals, and association leaders to participate in the tenth class of this program. The eight-month program, consisting of both in person and virtual meetings, will cover the entire talent pipeline, including early childhood education, K-12, postsecondary education, and workforce development.
“We are thrilled to announce that Carly Wakefield has been selected as a distinguished participant in the prestigious cohort program. Her exceptional skills, unwavering dedication, and remarkable potential have earned her this well-deserved opportunity. The Chandler Chamber continues to be a catalyst and leader in Chandler on education and workforce initiatives,” said Terri Kimble, President & CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce. (continued)
(continued) Upon completion, Business Leads Fellows will join the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s dedicated network of over 350 chambers of commerce and statewide associations from around the nation who regularly engage on education and workforce initiatives.
“We created the Business Leads Fellowship Program in response to the needs of our state and local chamber partners,” says Caitlin Codella Low, Vice President at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. “They, better than anyone, see the critical link between education and economic development, and we are glad to be able to support them as they take on this critical leadership role in their community.”

Kathleen Banister AZ Key Realty
I help people relocating to or from the Metro Phoenix Area. Raised in AZ, I began selling homes in Central Phoenix, followed by a career as a mortgage lender in Scottsdale. Ultimately, I chose to follow my passion for selling homes here in the Greater Phoenix Area. To better serve clients, I’ve enhanced my skills through rigorous professional education, reflected by my membership in the AZ REALTORS® Master of Real Estate Society. I am an Associate Broker, holding numerous national designations and certifications listed at linkedin. com/in/kathleenbanisterazhomes/. I serve on several committees at the local REALTOR® association, and I am a Chandler Chamber of Commerce Ambassador. All this to say, if you need a connection, please ask…there’s a good chance I can help! Find local real estate info at KathleenBanister.com
The Chandler Chamber’s Ambassador Program consist of a group of Chamber Members who are highly visible volunteers in the Chandler Chamber business community. Ambassadors mentor new members, assist in recruiting and retention efforts, and volunteer at Chamber functions such as Ribbon Cuttings, Networking Events and the Ostrich Festival.
