Dear Knights, Dames, family, and friends,
This is an exciting weekend for me. It is not my first time participating in an Investiture Ceremony in Rome, but it is my first time here as Grand Master, and I would like to thank the Grand Priory of Italy for the warm welcome and support.
We are an Order in transition. Since my Installation as Grand Master last December, we have been working hard in accordance with our vision and pledge to blend chivalric traditions with modern-day innovations.
During yesterday’s cultural event of the Universitas Sancti Cyrilli, my father spoke about the long history of the Order, and of the many familiar faces who have remained loyal and active members of OBSS. You are greatly valued, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with you and learn from you.
However, I also wish to point out the many new faces who have recently joined our Order, and we have many others in the pipeline. These too are very important to us, as they bring new ideas and a fresh outlook. I am grateful to you too.
This year, we are doing a great deal of ‘invisible’ work, including rebuilding our Councils at International, National and Regional levels, where we are re-appointing some of our elders for experience and continuity, as well as nominating youngsters for revival and rejuvenation. As from next year, I plan to give more visibility to the great work that is done by our Knights and Dames in promoting the aims of OBSS, the first of which is the promotion of humanitarian and philanthropic activities. This morning we held our first Magistral Council meeting and I was very pleased to learn about a number of social projects that are in the planning stage. I like to keep my interventions brief, so I will conclude by thanking you all for being here today, and, as I have already said before, I look forward to working with you to make this world a better place.

Cari Cavalieri, Dame, parenti, e amici,
Questo è un fine settimana emozionante per me. Non è la mia prima volta partecipare a una Cerimonia di Investitura a Roma, ma è la mia prima volta qui come Gran Maestro, e vorrei ringraziare il Gran Priorato d’Italia per il caloroso benvenuto e sostegno.
Siamo un Ordine in transizione. Da quando sono stata Installata come Gran Maestro lo scorso dicembre, abbiamo lavorato con grande impegno in conformità con la Nostra visione di fondere le tradizioni cavalleresche con innovazioni moderne.
Ieri, durante l’evento culturale della Universitas Sancti Cyrilli, mio padre ha parlato della lunga storia dell’Ordine e dei tanti membri che sono rimasti fedeli e attivi membri dell’OBSS. Siete molto apprezzati, e sono grata per l’opportunità di lavorare con voi e imparare da voi.
Tuttavia, desidero sottolineare anche i molti nuovi membri che si sono recentemente uniti al nostro Ordine, e ne abbiamo molti altri in arrivo. Anche questi sono molto importanti per noi, per portare nuove idee e una fresca prospettiva. Sono grata anche a voi.
Quest’anno, stiamo facendo molto lavoro ‘invisibile’, incluso ricostruire i nostri Consigli a livello Internazionale, Nazionale e Regionale, dove stiamo riconfermando alcuni dei nostri anziani per la loro esperienza e continuità, oltre a nominare dei giovani per rivitalizzazione e ringiovanimento. A partire dal prossimo anno, ho intenzione di dare maggiore visibilità al grande lavoro svolto dai nostri Cavalieri e Dame nel promuovere gli scopi dell’OBSS, il primo dei quali è la promozione di attività umanitarie e filantropiche. Questa mattina abbiamo tenuto il nostro primo incontro del Consiglio Magistrale e mi ha fatto molto piacere conoscere alcuni progetti sociali che sono in fase di pianificazione.
Mi piace mantenere i miei indirizzi brevi, quindi concluderò ringraziandovi tutti per essere qui oggi e, come già ho detto prima, rimango in attesa di lavorare con voi per rendere questo mondo un posto migliore.
CELEBRATING THE MEMORY OF SAINT CYRIL

The life of Saint Cyril took place during a troubled period in the history of the Church. Constantine, apostle to the Slavs, known by his monastic name Cyril, was born in 827 in Thessalonica, the main city of Macedonia and today the second-largest city in Greece. Younger than his brother Michael, better known by his monastic name Methodius, Cyril pursued studies in Byzantium, where he received holy orders after turning down a brilliant political career.
After the death of his father, Leo, a high-ranking official in the imperial administration, he moved to Constantinople, where he was raised alongside the future Emperor Michael III. In the Byzantine capital, he learned grammar, read Homeric texts, and studied geometry, rhetoric, arithmetic, astronomy, and music. Under the guidance of Leo the Mathematician and Photius, he learned dialectics and philosophy. Culturally Byzantine, the brothers Cyril and Methodius became apostles to the Slavs. Due to his exceptional abilities and cultural and religious knowledge, Saint Cyril was given important ecclesiastical responsibilities at a young age, including librarian of the archive attached to the great Church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and the prestigious role of secretary to the Patriarch of that same city. Soon, however, he showed a desire to withdraw from such offices to dedicate himself to study and the contemplative life. Around the year 840, he retreated to a monastery on the coast of the Black Sea.
After six months, he was persuaded to accept a teaching position in philosophical disciplines at the higher school in Constantinople, earning the title “Philosopher” for his excellence, a name by which he is still known. Later, he was sent by the Emperor and Patriarch on a mission to the Saracens, accompanied by his brother Michael, his companion in life and apostolate, to discuss the Holy Trinity. The Saracens attempted to poison him, but, astonished that Cyril drank the poison without harm, they showered him with honors and gifts.
After completing this mission, he withdrew from public life. However, once again, alongside his brother, he was included in a Byzantine delegation sent to the Khazars as a religious and cultural expert. During their stay in Crimea, in Cherson, they located the church where Saint Clement, a Roman pope and martyr, had been buried after his exile in those distant regions. They recovered his relics and carried them on their next missionary journey westward, until they were solemnly deposited in Rome and presented to Pope Adrian II. The event that would shape the rest of their lives occurred in 860 when Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia asked Emperor Michael III to send a scholar who could debate with Jews and Saracens and explain the true Christian faith to his people in their language. Cyril and Methodius were chosen, and they immediately set out for Great Moravia, then a state encompassing various Slavic peoples of Central Europe, at the crossroads of influences from both the East and West. There, they undertook the mission of evangelization, to which they devoted the rest of their lives, enduring travels, deprivations, sufferings, hostility, and persecution. They had thoroughly prepared for their task, bringing
with them the texts of the Holy Scriptures, necessary for celebrating the sacred liturgy, which they had prepared and translated into the Old Slavic language and written in a new alphabet they had developed. This alphabet, known as “Cyrillic,” after Saint Cyril, was perfectly suited to the sounds of the Slavic language. With their translation of the Bible, the Missal, and the liturgical rites, they provided the Slavic world with linguistic and cultural unity.
Called to Rome by Pope Nicholas I, they were received by his successor, Adrian II, who not only welcomed the relics of Saint Clement that Cyril and Methodius brought but also fully approved the introduction of the Slavic language into the liturgy. He ordained Methodius as a priest, along with some of their disciples, and placed the liturgical books written in Slavic on the altar of Santa Maria.
In the churches of Saint Peter, Saint Petronilla, Saint Andrew, and Saint Paul, a liturgy was celebrated in the Slavic language.
Considering the deep veneration in which Saints Cyril and Methodius, brothers from Thessalonica (ancient Thessalonica), have been held for centuries, especially among the Slavic nations, and remembering the invaluable contribution they made to the spread of the Gospel among those people, and at the same time to the cause of reconciliation, friendly coexistence, human development, and respect for the inherent dignity of every nation, Pope John Paul II, in the Apostolic Letter Egregiae Virtutis of December 31, 1980, following the path set by Pope Leo XIII over a hundred years earlier, proclaimed Cyril and Methodius co-patrons of Europe. After the Second Vatican Council, as part of the liturgical reform, their feast was set on February 14, the date which, from a historical point of view, marks the ascent to Heaven of Saint Cyril.
In December 868, Constantine-Saint Cyril fell ill and, foreseeing his death, took the monastic habit. He died in Rome on February 14, 869, at the age of 42. He was buried with great solemnity in the Roman Basilica of Saint Clement near the Colosseum, the martyr whose remains he had brought from Crimea in 862, and there they were laid by the same saint five years later. His mortal remains are still preserved there with deep reverence.
This is the story of Saint Cyril, from whom, in 1669, our Universitas originated. It was initially founded as the Imperial Academy of Saint Cyril by the Grand Ducal House of Moscow, of the Rurik Dynasty, to celebrate the 800th anniversary of his death. The Universitas Sancti Cyrilli is an international university with historical and legal characteristics, as it is dynastic because the family that founded it is a sovereign dynasty, formerly ruling over Moscow, which has never renounced its prerogatives nor undergone debellatio; it is patrimonial since it holds honorary and educational titles as part of the fons honorum, and it is a moral entity as it is non-profit. It is a Cultural Institute of International Law, essentially the cultural branch of the Sovereign Dynastic Military Byzantine Order of the Holy Sepulchre. I thank the researchers of the Faculty of Byzantine Studies of our Universitas for their valuable collaboration.

La vita di San Cirillo si inserisce in un momento travagliato della storia della Chiesa. Costantino, apostolo degli Slavi, conosciuto col suo nome monastico di Cirillo, nacque nell’anno 827 a Tessalonica, principale città della Macedonia e oggi la seconda città della Grecia. Più giovane del fratello Michele, anch’esso più noto con il nome monastico di Metodio, Cirillo segui gli studi a Bisanzio, dove ricevette gli ordini sacri, dopo avere rifiutato una brillante affermazione politica. Morto il padre, Leone, un alto funzionario dell’amministrazione imperiale, si trasferì a Costantinopoli dove venne allevato insieme al futuro Imperatore Michele III. Nella capitale bizantina imparò la grammatica, lesse i testi omerici, apprese la geometria e le nozioni fondamentali di retorica, aritmetica, astronomia e musica. Da Leone il Matematico e Fozio imparò la dialettica e la filosofia. Bizantini di cultura, i fratelli Cirillo e Metodio seppero farsi apostoli degli Slavi. Per le eccezionali doti e conoscenze culturali e religiose San Cirillo si vide affidare ancor giovane delicate mansioni ecclesiastiche, come quella di bibliotecario dell’archivio annesso alla grande Chiesa di Santa Sofia in Costantinopoli e nel contempo, l’incarico prestigioso di segretario del Patriarca di quella stessa città. Ben presto, però, mostrò di volersi esimere da tali uffici, per dedicarsi agli studi e alla vita contemplativa. Cosi verso l’anno 840 egli la interruppe, rifugiandosi in un monastero sulle coste del Mar Nero. Ritrovato dopo sei mesi, venne convinto ad accettare l’insegnamento delle discipline filosofiche presso la Scuola superiore di Costantinopoli, guadagnandosi per l’eccellenza del sapere l’epiteto di Filosofo, con cui è tuttora conosciuto. Più tardi fu inviato dall’Imperatore e dal Patriarca in missione presso i Saraceni, insieme al fratello Michele, suo compagno nella vita e nell’apostolato, per discutere con loro intorno alla SS. Trinità. I Saraceni cercarono di avvelenarlo, ma sorpresi dal fatto che Cirillo aveva bevuto il veleno senza alcun danno, lo coprirono di onori e doni.
Portato a termine tale incarico si ritirò dalla vita pubblica ma nuovamente, insieme al fratello, venne incluso in una delegazione bizantina inviata presso i Khazari, in qualità di esperto religioso e culturale. Durante la permanenza in Crimea presso Cherson, essi individuano la chiesa in cui anticamente era stato sepolto San Clemente, Papa romano e martire, già esiliato in quelle lontane regioni. Recuperarono le reliquie portandole con loro nel successivo viaggio missionario verso Occidente, fino al momento in cui essi potevano deporle solennemente a Roma, consegnandole al papa Adriano II. L’evento che doveva decidere tutto il corso ulteriore della loro vita avvenne nell’ 860 con la richiesta, rivolta dal principe Rastislav della Grande Moravia all’Imperatore Michele III, di inviare ai suoi popoli “un letterato che sapesse discutere con Giudei e Saraceni e che fosse in grado di spiegare loro la vera fede Cristiana nella loro lingua”. Furono scelti Cirillo e Metodio, i quali prontamente accettarono e si misero in viaggio, giungendo nella Grande Moravia, uno Stato comprendente allora diverse popolazioni slave dell’Europa centrale, al crocevia dei reciproci influssi tra Oriente e Occidente. Qui intrapresero tra quei popoli la missione di evangelizzazione, alla quale dedicarono
entrambi tutto il resto della vita, trascorso tra viaggi, privazioni, sofferenze, ostilità e persecuzioni.
Si erano infatti ben preparati al compito loro affidato; recavano con sé i testi della Sacra Scrittura, indispensabili alla celebrazione della sacra liturgia, preparati e tradotti da loro in lingua paleoslava e scritti in un nuovo alfabeto, da loro elaborato e che da essi prese il nome di “alfabeto cirillico”, appunto da San Cirillo, perfettamente adatto ai suoni di tale lingua, offrendo al mondo slavo con la traduzione della Bibbia, del Messale e del rituale liturgico, unità linguistica e culturale.
Chiamati a Roma da papa Nicola I, al loro arrivo furono ricevuti dal successore Adriano II, che non solo andò loro incontro in processione per accogliere degnamente le reliquie di San Clemente che Cirillo e Metodio portavano, ma espresse la sua piena approvazione sull’introduzione della lingua slava nella liturgia, ordinò prete Metodio e alcuni loro discepoli e fece deporre sull’altare di Santa Maria i libri liturgici scritti in slavo.
Nelle chiese di San Pietro, Santa Petronilla, Sant’Andrea e San Paolo fu celebrata una liturgia in slavo.
Considerando la venerazione piena di gratitudine, della quale i santi Cirillo e Metodio, fratelli di Salonicco (l’antica Tessalonica) godono da secoli, specialmente tra le nazioni slave, e memore dell’inestimabile contributo da loro dato all’opera dell’annuncio del Vangelo fra quelle genti e al tempo stesso alla causa della riconciliazione, dell’amichevole convivenza, dello sviluppo umano e del rispetto dell’intrinseca dignità di ogni Nazione, con la Lettera Apostolica Egregiae virtutis del 31 dicembre 1980, riprendendo la linea già tracciata da Papa Leone XIII oltre cento anni prima, Papa Giovanni Paolo II, proclamò i fratelli Cirillo e Metodio compatroni d’Europa. Dopo il Concilio Vaticano II, a seguito della riforma liturgica, la festa fu fissata al 14 febbraio, data che dal punto di vista storico, segna l’ascesa al Cielo di San Cirillo. Nel dicembre dell’868 Costantino-San Cirillo si ammalò e prevedendo prossima la sua fine, rivesti l’abito monastico. Morì a Roma il 14 febbraio 869, all’età di 42 anni. Venne sepolto con grande solennità nella Basilica Romana di San Clemente presso il Colosseo, il martire i cui resti aveva portato egli stesso, dalla Crimea nell’ 862 e qui sepolti dallo stesso Santo cinque anni dopo. Le sue spoglie mortali sono tuttora ivi custodite con commossa venerazione.
Questa la storia di San Cirillo, da cui nel lontano 1669 ha avuto origine anche la nostra Universitas, inizialmente nata come Imperiale Accademia di San Cirillo, dalla Casa Granducale di Mosca, Dinastia Rjurik per celebrare l’800esimo anniversario della sua morte. L’Universitas Sancti Cyrilli è infatti una Università Internazionale che conserva caratteristiche storico-giuridiche, in quanto è dinastica perché la Famiglia che l’ha fondata è una Dinastia Sovrana, già regnante su Mosca, che non ha mai rinunciato alle proprie prerogative né ha mai subito la debellatio; è patrimoniale in quanto ha una dotazione di titoli onorifici e di studio, facenti parte della fons honorum ed è Ente morale perché non ha finalità di lucro. Trattasi infatti di un Istituto Culturale di Diritto Internazionale, praticamente il ramo culturale del Sovrano Dinastico Militare Ordine Bizantino del Santo Sepolcro. Ringrazio i Ricercatori della Facoltà di Studi Bizantini della nostra Universitas per la loro preziosa collaborazione.
‘VINCENZO’S PIZZA’
FOR DIABETIC CHILDREN IN BARI

On 13 September 2024, the Grand Priory of Italy organised a wonderful initiative in collaboration with the ‘Coordinamento tra le Associazioni Italiane Giovani con Diabete’ (AGD Italia), in the pizzeria of our Confrere Gr. Off. Vincenzo Dambrosio in Bari, Italy.
F ifteen diabetic children and over 20 of their parents were invited to “test” the exclusive dough of Vincenzo’s Pizza, which has a very low glycemic and low gluten impact. The pizza was declared “good” and “excellent” on all accounts with a 100% satisfaction rating and, as indicated by the graphs of the children’s blood sugar values over the next 6 hours, we can state that it was also a success from a scientific point of view.
This event was also attended by the President of AGD Italia, Dr Rosanna Lacerenza, and professors from the Department of Medicine of the University of Bari, Prof. Maurizio Del Vecchio and Prof. Antonio Gnoni. Gr. Off. Dambrosio was supported by Comm. Gino Minafra - an Accountant by profession, and Marquis Gr. Cr. Mario Stefanelli - a Chemist, who combined their related experiences and to organise this event.
This is an excellent example of how synergies between OBSS Knights and Dames and their friends can lead to individual as well as collective growth in accordance with the Order’s humanitarian and philanthropic objectives.

‘PIZZA DI VINCENZO’ PER BAMBINI CON DIABETE A BARI

Il13 settembre 2024, il Gran Priorato d’Italia ha organizzato una meravigliosa iniziativa in collaborazione con il Coordinamento tra le Associazioni Italiane Giovani con Diabete (AGD Italia), presso la pizzeria del nostro Confratello Gr. Uff. Vincenzo Dambrosio a Bari.
Sono stati invitati 15 bambini diabetici e oltre 20 dei loro genitori all’evento per “testare” l’impasto esclusivo della Pizza di Vincenzo, che ha un impatto glicemico e di glutine molto basso. La pizza è stata giudicata “buona” e “eccellente” sotto tutti i punti di vista con un grado di soddisfazione del 100% e, osservando i grafici dei valori glicemici nelle 6 ore successive, possiamo affermare che è stato anche un successo dal punto di vista scientifico.
A questo evento hanno partecipato anche la Presidente dell’AGD Italia, Dott.ssa Rosanna Lacerenza, e i Professori del Dipartimento di Medicina dell’Università di Bari, Prof. Maurizio Del Vecchio e Prof. Antonio Gnoni. Gr. Uff. Dambrosio era assistito dal Comm. Gino Minafra - commercialista di professione, e dal Marchese Gr. Cr. Mario Stefanelli - chimico, che hanno unito le loro esperienze e conoscenze per organizzare questo evento.
Questo è un ottimo esempio di come le sinergie tra i Cavalieri e le Dame dell’OBSS e i loro amici possano portare a una crescita individuale e collettiva in conformità con gli obiettivi umanitari e filantropici dell’Ordine. Grazie a tutti i membri dell’OBSS per il loro sostegno.
INVESTITURE in ROME

OnSaturday 20th April 2024, OBSS held a solemn Investiture Ceremony of Knights and Dames at the historic church of San Silvestro al Quirinale in Rome, Italy. The Ceremony was presided by the Grand Master Prof. Leonie Baldacchino with the participation of Prince High Patron Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino.
During the first part of the Ceremony, the Grand Master promoted four Knights and Dames from the Grand Priory of Italy, one Knight from the Grand Priory of Malta, and one Dame from the Grand Priory of Russia to a higher of Grade: Marchesino Giorgio Wiederhofer was raised to the Grade of Knight Grand Cross of Justice, Countess Paola Zanoni was raised to the Grade of Dame Grand Cross of Justice, Donald Brownrigg was raised to the Grade of Knight Grand Officer of Magistral Grace, Stefano Da Rin was raised to the Grade of Knight Commander of Magistral Grace, and Emanuela Deola and Irina Zuenco were raised to the Grade of Dame Commander of Magistral Grace.
Moreover, three senior members were recognised for having dedicated themselves to the promotion and organisation of various activities in their respective Grand Priories, and for the affirmation of the principles and aims of the Order: Baron Gr. Cr. Franco Martone and H.E. Baron Gr. Cr. Christian Wintersteiger were called to take the Oath of Obedience to the Grand Master and High Patron, and of Devotion to the Order, and enrolled in the Category of Professed Knights. Gr. Cr. Mirko Boagno was called to the same Oath and enrolled in the Category of Knights of Obedience and Devotion.
During the second part of the Ceremony, the following Postulants from the Grand Priories of Italy and Malta received their Investiture: Marco Di Bari and Vincenzo D’Onghia were admitted as Knights Officer of Magistral Grace; and Irina Brownrigg was admitted as Dame Officer of Magistral Grace.
The Grand Master and Prince High Patron were assisted by various Dignitaries including the Grand Prior of Italy H.E. Marquis Gr. Gr. Cosimo Mario Stefanelli, the Grand Ceremonist H.E. Baron Gr. Cr. Christian Wintersteiger, and the National Ceremonist for Italy Dame Comm. Emanuela Deola. The religious rites were celebrated by the Regional Prelate of the Bailiwick of Lazio, Rev. Don Riccardo Petroni, with the support of Fr. Micaol, while musical services were provided by the talented young violinist Stefano Mhanna.
The Investiture Ceremony was followed by a Gala Dinner at the Antica Hostaria Roma, organised by Countess Dame Gr. Cr. Paola Zanoni.

Sabato 20 aprile 2024, l’OBSS ha tenuto una solenne Cerimonia di Investitura di Cavalieri e Dame presso la storica chiesa di San Silvestro al Quirinale a Roma, Italia. La Cerimonia era presieduta dal Gran Maestro Prof. Leonie Baldacchino con la participazione del Principe Alto Patrono Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino.
Durante la prima parte della Cerimonia, il Gran Maestro ha promosso quattro Cavalieri dal Gran Priorato d’Italia, un Cavaliere dal Gran Priorato di Malta, e una Dama dal Gran Priorato di Russia ad un Grado superiore: Marchesino Giorgio Wiederhofer è stato elevato al Grado di Gran Croce di Giustizia, Contessa Paola Zanoni è stata elevata al Grado di Dama Gran Croce di Giustizia, Donald Brownrigg è stato elevato al Grado di Grand’Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale, Stefano Da Rin è stato elevato al Grado di Commendatore di Grazia Magistrale, e Emanuela Deola e Irina Zuenco sono state elevate al Grado di Dama di Commenda di Grazia Magistrale.
Inoltre, tre membri anziani sono stati riconosiuti per lodevole attività di promozione e di organizzazione nei rispettivi Gran Priorati, e per l’affermazione dei principi e degli scopi dell’Ordine: Barone Gr. Cr. Franco Martone e S.E. Barone Gr. Cr. Christian Wintersteiger erano chiamati al Giuramento d’Obbedienza al Gran Maestro e al Principe Alto Patrono, e di Devozione all’Ordine, e iscritti nella Categoria di Cavalieri Professi. Gr. Cr. Mirko Boagno è stato chiamato allo stesso Giuramento e iscritto nella Categoria di Cavalieri d’Obbedienza e Devozione. Durante la seconda parte della Cerimonia, i seguenti Postulanti dei Gran Priorati d’Italia e di Malta hanno ricevuto l’Investitura: Marco Di Bari e Vincenzo D’Onghia sono stati ammessi come Cavalieri Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale; mentre Irina Brownrigg è stata ammessa con il Grado di Dama Ufficiale di Grazia Magistrale.
Il Gran Maestro e il Principe Alto Patrono sono stati assistiti da vari Dignitari tra cui il Gran Priore d’Italia S.E. Marchese Gr. Gr. Cosimo Mario Stefanelli, il Gran Cerimoniere S.E. Barone Gr. Cr. Christian Wintersteiger, e il Cerimoniere Nazionale per l’Italia Dama Comm. Emanuela Deola. I riti religiosi sono stati celebrati dal Prelato Regionale del Baliaggion del Lazio, Rev. Don Riccardo Petroni, con l’assistenza del Rev. Micaol, mentre i servizi musicali sono stati forniti dal giovane violinista di talento Stefano Mhanna. La Cerimonia di Investitura è stata seguita da una Cena di Gala presso la Antica Hostaria Roma, organizzata dalla Contessa Dama Gr. Cr. Paola Zanoni.

On Friday 19th April 2024, Universitas Sancti Cyrilli A.D.1669 – the cultural arm of OBSS – held an Academic Convocation at Villa Aurelia Sporting Club in Rome, Italy. This began with an Opening Address by Prof. Francesco Frezzato, followed by a Keynote Address titled ‘Celebrating the Memory of St Cyril’ by Rector Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino. The keynote text is included on pages 4 and 5 of this issue.
This event also featured a live show by contemporary artist Danilo Calo’, who produced a painting while the speakers addressed the delegation, and then presented it to the Rector as a gift to the Universitas Sancti Cyrilli. This was sponsored by ArtCoin, which General Director Dr Mirko Boagno explained is a token cryptocurrency where the price is designed to be pegged to exchange-traded assets such as works of art.
The Convocation was followed by dinner at the Club’s restaurant, featuring a live performance by the singer Francesca La Colla, winner of popular Italian TV programme Tali e Quali Show. This was organised by Countess Dame Gr. Cr. Paola Zanoni.

Venerdì 19 aprile 2024, la Universitas Sancti Cyrilli A.D.1669 – il braccio culturale dell’OBSS – ha tenuto una Convocazione Accademica presso la Villa Aurelia Sporting Club a Roma, Italia. È iniziata con un Discorso di Benvenuto del Prof. Francesco Frezzato, seguito dal Discorso Principale intitolato “Celebrando la Memoria di San Cirillo” del Rettore Prof. Alfred Josef Baldacchino. Questo evento ha anche visto un ‘live show’ dell’artista contemporaneo Danilo Calo’, che ha realizzato un dipinto mentre i relatori si rivolgevano alla delegazione, per poi consegnarlo al Rettore come regalo alla Universitas Sancti Cyrilli. Questo è stato sponsorizzato da ArtCoin, il quale Direttore Generale Dr. Mirko Boagno ha spiegato è una criptovaluta token il cui prezzo è concepito per essere agganciato a beni scambiati in borsa, come opere d’arte.

EMPOWERING youth THROUGH MUSIC

Aproject proposal that was submitted to the Malta Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation’s Community Development and Innovation Scheme has recently been selected for funding. In this project, OBSS shall collaborate with the Malta Spring Festival Director Mr Karl Fiorini to give percussion lessons to disadvantaged youths, under the guidance of professional musicians and teaching assistants. This shall culminate in th composition of a percussion piece by the youngsters, which they will perform at a theatre during the Festival in April 2025. The Edward de Bono Institute at the University of Malta will also be involved to study the impacts of the project on various outcomes, including the participants’ 21st Century Skills, self-confidence and well-being.

Count Gr. Cr. Anthony Coleiro – Grand Chancellor
It was with a heavy heart that we announced the demise of His Excellency Count Gr. Cr. Günther Hirschmann, Grand Prior of Germany, on 25 August 2024. Count Hirschmann joined OBSS in June 2005 and was instrumental in the growth of the Order in Germany. He was appointed Prior in 2008, promoted to Bailiff in 2009, and then to Grand Prior in 2011. On behalf of our Magistral Council, Our College of Nobles, and the Grand Priory of Germany, we express our deepest gratitude to dear Count Günther for his long years of loyalty and service to the Order. He was much loved and highly respected by all who knew him, and his demise is a huge loss for all of us.
Less than a fortnight later, on 07 September 2024, our Order suffered another great loss as our dear Confrere Knight Off. Oswald Scicluna passed away. Chev. Scicluna was an active member of the Grand Priory of Malta, where his kindness and commitment made him a cherished friend and colleague to all. On behalf of our Magistral Council and the Grand Priory of Malta, we thank Chev. Scicluna for his contributions and will always keep him in our thoughts and prayers. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of Count Hirschmann and Chev. Scicluna. May they find solace in the impact these remarkable individuals had on so many lives.

POTENZIARE I GIOVANI ATTRAVERSO LA MUSICA

Unaproposta presentata al Ministero dell’Istruzione, dello Sport, della Gioventù, della Ricerca e dell’Innovazione di Malta è stata recentemente selezionata per il finanziamento. In questo progetto, OBSS collaborerà con il Direttore del Malta Spring Festival, il Sig. Karl Fiorini, per impartire lezioni di percussioni a giovani svantaggiati, sotto la guida di musicisti professionisti e assistenti didattici. Ciò culminerà nella composizione di un pezzo di percussioni da parte dei giovani, che eseguiranno in un teatro durante il Festival nell’aprile 2025. L’Edward de Bono Institute presso l’Università di Malta sarà anche coinvolto per studiare gli impatti del progetto su vari risultati, tra cui le competenze del 21° secolo, l’autostima e il benessere dei partecipanti.

Conil cuore pesante abbiamo annunciato la scomparsa di Sua Eccellenza Conte Gr. Cr. Günther Hirschmann, Gran Priore di Germania, il 25 Agosto 2024. Il Conte Hirschmann era entrato nell’OBSS nel giugno 2005 ed è stato determinante nella crescita dell’Ordine in Germania. È stato nominato Priore nel 2008, Bali’ nel 2009, e poi Gran Priore nel 2011. A nome del nostro Consiglio Magistrale, Nostro Collegio dei Nobili e del Gran Priorato di Germania, esprimiamo la nostra più profonda gratitudine al caro Conte Günther per i suoi lunghi anni di lealtà e di servizio all’Ordine. Era molto amato e rispettato da tutti coloro che lo conoscevano, e il suo decesso è una perdita enorme per tutti noi e sarà molto rimpianto.
Poi, meno di due settimane dopo, il 7 settembre 2024, il nostro Ordine ha subito un’altra grande perdita cquando il nostro caro Confratello Cav. Uff. Oswald Scicluna è scomparso. Cav. Uff. Scicluna. Cavaliere Scicluna è stato un membro attivo del Gran Priorato di Malta, dove la sua gentilezza e il suo impegno lo hanno reso un caro amico e collega per tutti.
A nome del nostro Consiglio Magistrale e del Gran Priorato di Malta ringraziamo il Cav. Uff. Scicluna per il suo contributo e lo manterremo sempre nei nostri pensieri e nelle nostre preghiere.
Le nostre più sentite condoglianze vanno alle famiglie e ai cari del Conte Hirschmann e Cav. Uff. Scicluna. Possano trovare conforto nell’impatto che questi straordinari individui hanno avuto su tante vite.

On24th October 2024, the OBSS Grand Priory of Malta marked the 54th anniversary since its inception. To celebrate this special occasion, the Grand Priory announced that it shall be supporting the Challenge for Parkinson’s initiative to raise funds for the recently launched Specialised Parkinson’s Centre. Core members of the Challenge for Parkinson’s team were invited to the OBSS Malta Council Meeting on 25th October to provide an overview of their important work and share insights on how they are helping those affected by Parkinson’s Disease. They were then presented with a donation on behalf of the Byzantium Foundation (the Order’s locally registered Voluntary Organisation) and OBSS Grand Priory of Malta. We thank our members who contributed to making a positive impact in our community.

Per celebrare questa occasione speciale, il Gran Priorato ha annunciato un sponsorizzazione dell’iniziativa Sfida Per Il Parkinson per raccogliere fondi per il nuovo Centro specializzato per il Parkinson. I membri principali della squadra Challenge for Parkinson’s sono stati invitati alla riunione del Consiglio dell’OBSS di Malta il 25 ottobre per fare una presentazione sul loro importante lavoro e condividere approfondimenti su come stanno aiutando le persone colpite dal morbo di Parkinson. Hanno quindi ricevuto una donazione per conto della Byzantium Foundation (l’organizzazione volontaria registrata localmente dall’Ordine) e del Gran Priorato di Malta dell’OBSS. Ringraziamo i nostri membri che hanno contribuito ad avere un impatto positivo nella nostra comunità.

TheGrand Priory of Malta held several National Council Meetings and other activities during 2024. During the meetings various topics were discussed, encouraging innovative ideas. Council meetings are always followed by dinner with members present for the meetings.
During Lent in March, a Sunday morning retreat was organised at the historic chapel of our Saviour in Kalkara. We participated in a Mass, followed by the Eucharistic Adoration and a spiritual presentation by our national Prelate Fr. Brian Gialanze’, who guided the congregation through our spiritual journey. Spontaneous prayers and inspired thoughts were shared amongst the brothers and sisters present.
The Grand Priory of Malta is invited each year by the Parish of Qormi to participate in the Good Friday traditional procession. This year members of the Order attended and were led by our Grand Master H.R.H. Leonie Baldacchino DGC.
In the last weekend of August we organised our yearly summer event . This year it was a set menu set up for our gathering in a beautiful restaurant in the southern part of the island.
On 25 October the Grand Priory of Malta marked the 54th anniversary since its inception. To celebrate this occasion we sponsored the Challenge for Parkinson’s initiative in aid of the Specialised Parkinson’s Centre.
As we write this, we are preparing for our December Investiture which is held every year in Malta.

IlGran Priorato di Malta ha tenuto diverse riunioni del Consiglio Nazionale e altre attività nel corso del 2024. Durante le riunioni sono stati discussi vari argomenti, incoraggiando idee innovative. Le riunioni del Consiglio sono sempre seguite da una cena con i membri presenti.
Durante la Quaresima, a marzo, è stato organizzato un ritiro domenicale presso la storica cappella del Salvatore a Kalkara. Abbiamo partecipato a una Messa, seguita dall’Adorazione Eucaristica e da una presentazione spirituale tenuta dal nostro Prelato nazionale, Padre Brian Gialanze’, che ha guidato la congregazione attraverso il nostro cammino spirituale. Preghiere spontanee e pensieri ispirati sono stati condivisi tra i fratelli e le sorelle presenti. Il Priorato di Malta viene invitato ogni anno dalla Parrocchia di Qormi a partecipare alla tradizionale processione del Venerdì Santo. Quest’anno i membri dell’Ordine hanno partecipato e sono stati guidati dal nostro Gran Maestro S.A.R. Leonie Baldacchino DGC.
Nell’ultimo fine settimana di agosto abbiamo organizzato il nostro evento estivo annuale. Quest’anno si è trattato di un menù fisso preparato per il nostro incontro in un bellissimo ristorante nella parte meridionale dell’isola.

To Her Most Noble Grace, Grandmaster Leonie, Distinguished Lords and Ladies, and My Cherished Fellow Knights and Dames,
I extend warmest salutations from the northern realm of Canada, where our Order’s flame burns ever bright.
The dawn of 2024 emerged gently, as we collectively arose from the long shadow cast by the recent pandemic. Our last gathering had been tinged with sorrow, as we bid farewell to our beloved Baron Gr. Cr. Scott Sutherland . Yet from this solemn occasion, we found renewed purpose in strengthening the bonds that unite our fellowship.
This year became one of renaissance for our Grand Priory , dedicated to rekindling the sacred connections among our brotherhood. Monthly gatherings, though informal in nature, became a cherished tradition where those of us still dwelling within these borders shared in fellowship, sustenance, and the timeless joy of companionship.
It is with heavy heart that I must chronicle the passing of our former Grand Prior Baron Gr. Cr. Niall Good who, though distanced from our immediate circle by geography and health in recent years, remained ever present in our thoughts and prayers.
In brighter tidings, we celebrate a historic transition as Prince Alfred has bestowed the mantle of leadership upon his daughter. This enlightened decision heralds a new chapter in our Order’s storied history, and we stand ready to serve Her Grace with unwavering loyalty as she guides us into the future.
Looking toward the coming year, we have crafted a more structured framework for our fellowship. Four cardinal meetings shall serve as our foundational gatherings, while eight additional assemblies shall welcome those who seek to learn of our traditions or share in our brotherhood’s company.
Finally, it brings me great pleasure to present our candidate or a forthcoming Investiture , Eric Brand. Through his service as squire, he has demonstrated the virtues of chivalry, honour, and dedication that are the hallmarks of our Order. I speak with complete conviction of his worthiness to join our ranks.

Invio i più calorosi saluti dal reame settentrionale del Canada, dove la fiamma del nostro Ordine arde sempre viva.
L’alba del 2024 è emersa dolcemente, mentre ci siamo collettivamente risvegliati dalla lunga ombra gettata dalla recente pandemia. Il nostro ultimo incontro è stato tinto di tristezza, poiché abbiamo dato l’addio al nostro amato Barone Gr. Cr. Scott Sutherland. Eppure, da questa occasione solenne, abbiamo trovato un rinnovato proposito nel rafforzare i legami che uniscono la nostra fratellanza.
Quest’anno è stato uno di rinascita per il nostro Gran Priorato, dedicato a ravvivare le sacre connessioni all’interno della nostra fratellanza. Gli incontri mensili, sebbene informali nella loro natura, sono divenuti una tradizione preziosa in cui noi, che ancora dimoriamo in queste terre, abbiamo condiviso la fraternità, il nutrimento e la gioia senza tempo della compagnia.
Con cuore pesante, devo raccontare dell’ decesso del nostro precedente Gran Priore Barone Gr. Cr. Niall Good, che, sebbene allontanato dal nostro immediato circolo dalla geografia e dalla salute negli ultimi anni, è rimasto sempre presente nei nostri pensieri e nelle nostre preghiere.
Con notizie più liete, celebriamo una transizione storica poiché il Principe Alfred ha conferito il manto di leadership a sua figlia. Questa saggia decisione inaugura un nuovo capitolo nella storia del nostro Ordine, e siamo pronti a servire Sua Grazia con lealtà incrollabile mentre ci guida verso il futuro.
Guardando all’anno a venire, abbiamo creato una struttura più organizzata per la nostra fratellanza. Quattro incontri cardinali serviranno come fondamenta per i nostri ritrovi, mentre otto assemblee aggiuntive accoglieranno coloro che desiderano conoscere le nostre tradizioni o condividere la compagnia della nostra fratellanza.
Infine, è con grande piacere che presento il nostro candidato per una prossima Investitura Eric Brand. Attraverso il suo servizio come scudiero, ha dimostrato le virtù di cavalleria, onore e dedizione che sono il marchio del nostro Ordine. Parlo con totale convinzione della sua meritevolezza per unirsi ai nostri ranghi.

We are very pleased to announce that the next Investiture Ceremony of OBSS will be held in the metropolitan City of Palermo in Sicily, on Saturday 22 March 2025
The Ceremony will be preceded by an Academic Convocation of the Universitas Sancti Cyrilli on Friday 21 March 2025.
The events will take place in the historic center of Palermo, at different venues within walking distance of one another.
Hotel Eurostars Centrale Palace, a prestigious hotel built in the 16th/17th century, has been selected as partner for this event, also hosting the meeting of the Universitas. The Gala Dinner will be held in a prestigious palazzo in the vicinity.
The official invitation and programme details will be shared well ahead of the event and we look forward to welcoming many of you to this great event.

La Cerimonia sarà preceduta da una Convocazione Accademica dell’Universitas Sancti Cyrilli venerdì 21 marzo 2025.
Gli eventi si svolgeranno nel centro storico di Palermo, in diverse sedi a breve distanza l’una dall’altra.
L’Hotel Eurostars Centrale Palace, prestigiosa struttura risalente al XVI/XVII secolo, è stato selezionato come partner per questo evento e ospiterà anche la riunione dell’Universitas. La Cena di Gala si terrà in un prestigioso palazzo nelle vicinanze.
