The Gloaming The Gloaming carves new paths connecting the rich Irish folk tradition and the New York contemporary music scene. From haunting sean-nós to rousing instrumental medleys, they make music that is both ancient and utterly new.

Fiddle master Martin Hayes, guitarist Dennis Cahill, sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, hardanger fiddle innovator Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman) – The Gloaming are five master musicians, each with highly successful individual careers, who have come together to create new music which pairs memorable, yearning melodies with a progressive style.

In early 2011, these five musicians first met to explore their collaboration at Grouse Lodge Studios in Ireland’s County Westmeath. Later that year they went on their first Irish tour, which included a sold out debut show at The National Concert Hall in Dublin.

Most of The Gloaming’s work is based on traditional Irish forms, the basic grammar of which is known as a reel. Reels are performed in simple rhythmic meters (2/2 or 4/4) and repeated in simple configurations. The rhythms and melodies may strike you as eerily familiar. Originating among the Scots and the Irish, reels crossed the Atlantic Ocean during successive waves of British and Irish immigration beginning in colonial times. The sound spread like wild fire in North America, entering the tradition of the Acadians and Quebecers of Francophone Canada and passing through the USA’s New England states. Yet what The Gloaming does with this syntax of Irish music is anything but simple nostalgia. Into these traditional structures, they introduce deep wells of personality and experience.

The resulting musical collaboration is a potent reinvention and reduction of the Irish music tradition. It’s an abstract, exploratory and improvised uprising against formal structures, breaking the conventions down to the kernel within and remaking what is ancient and well-worn, manhandled and widely distributed, into something utterly singular and new. The result is unclouded by sheen or hokey sentimentality.

Definitions Sean-nós – Literally translated from Gaelic as “old style,” it refers both to a form of solo dancing, and a form of unaccompanied solo singing. Melodies in this tradition are long, extremely stylized, melodically complex and include substantial ornament and rhythmic variant from verse to verse. The lyrics are usually about love, devotion or lamentation.

Hardanger fiddle – A traditional string instrument which takes its name from a region in western Norway. Similar to a violin but with up to a half-dozen extra strings – called “understrings” or “sympathetic strings” – which resonate under the influence of the primary four. Often these instruments are highly decorated with animal carvings or inlaid precious materials such as mother of pearl.

Reel – A form of folk dance native to Scotland and Ireland. Also the name of the music that accompanies it.

Martin Hayes’ unique sound, his mastery of the fiddle, his acknowledgement of the past and his ability to place the tradition within a wider contemporary context, combine to create a unique and insightful interpretation of Irish music. He has drawn inspiration from many musical genres, but remains grounded in the music he grew up with in East County Clare where the tradition he inherited from his late father, P. Joe Hayes, was the formative influence on his musical accent and ideas.

He has recorded two acclaimed solo albums, Martin Hayes and Under the Moon on the Green Linnet label and three duet albums with Dennis Cahill: The Lonesome Touch, Live in Seattle, and Welcome Here Again. His latest release is Triúr sa Draighean with Peadar Ó Riada and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh. Hayes is one of the highest regarded contemporary practitioners of Irish music.

Iarla Ó Lionáird

Iarla Ó Lionáird grew up and learned his craft in the musical heartland of Cúil Aodha in the Gaeltacht region of West Cork. Ó Lionáird established himself both as a masterful exponent of sean-nós song and as a pioneer in its renewal and development. Always an artist on his own journey, Ó Lionáird signed to Real World in the mid 1990s where he would go on to make many ground breaking recordings with the multi-million selling group Afro Celt Sound System. His solo career was inevitable and would begin with the acclaimed and powerful Seven Steps To Mercy. He went on to release the soundtrack for I Could Read The Sky followed by Invisible Fields. These two subsequent albums melded electronic soundscapes with sean-nós to stunning effect. He released his latest solo album Foxlight on Real World in 2011. Ó Lionáird is the most renowned living vocalist working in the Irish music tradition.

Thomas Bartlett

Thomas Bartlett, aka Doveman, grew up in Vermont. He began playing ukulele at the young age of three after the wardens at his daycare found him strumming a block and decided he could probably put resonant strings to good use. He began playing piano at age five, and never stopped, dropping out of high school to study in London with Maria Curcio, one of the 20th century’s greatest classical music teachers. Thomas went on to Columbia University for a year but dropped out, again, this time to concentrate on his classical music studies, going back to school until he dropped out (again!), this time to play with bands. He quickly became one of the most in-demand sidemen in New York City. Thomas has played or recorded with Antony & the Johnsons, Nico Muhly, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Glen Hansard, Bebel Gilberto, Arto Lindsay, The National, and Yoko Ono. He makes music under the name Doveman, and his latest release is entitled The Conformist.

Dennis Cahill

Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, a native of Chicago born to parents from the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. He studied at the city’s prestigious Music College before becoming an active member of the local music scene. Cahill’s spare, essential accompaniment to Martin Hayes’ fiddle is acknowledged as a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. In addition to his work with Hayes, Cahill has performed with such renowned fiddlers as Liz Carroll, Eileen Ivers and Kevin Burke, as well as many Irish musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a sought after producer for musical artists whom he records in his own Chicago studio and is also an accomplished photographer. Cahill contributes beautifully controlled and minimal percussive playing that lifts and amplifies The Gloaming’s music.

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Dublin-born Ó Raghallaigh (his first name pronounced “kwa-veen”) plays traditional and contemporary folk music on fiddle, 5-string viola and hardanger fiddle. In 2007, he released Where the One-Eyed Man is King, an adventurous, self-produced EP. Ó Raghallaigh has recently been studying the work of contemporary folk fiddlers from other countries, including Nils Okland, Dan Trueman and Johan Hedin, and has been writing new material that continues to explore that region where Irish traditional music begins to disintegrate. He has recently been involved in two acclaimed recordings, Le Gealaigh/A Moment of Madness with Brendan Begley and Triúr sa Draighean with Peadar Ó Riada and Martin Hayes. Ó Raghallaigh is the youngest member of The Gloaming and contributes much to the uncommon atmosphere of the music, filling it with drones and abstract textures.
