How are you still doing this? It seems so ... difficult.

No not at all. I guess, I just love the music. Whatever I’m feeling that day, I just love playing the music. It’s the one thing. It’s easy to get out of my head with it. Yeah its easier to get out of my head and lose reality for a minute.

Have you found that your whole life?

Music, I’ve alway found that my whole life. How do I put it? A safe- [ under his breath “ah a safe space?”] It’s my own little lane that I can hang in. It’s almost like being asleep.

It shows in the music, each live set next to the record, it’s all a little different. It’s crazy to hear something in the music

And that’s the way it’s suppose to be ya know. Cuz we never feel the same way the next day or tomorrow. Who knows? Today I feel tired, tomorrow I’ll feel like that. I’m not thinking when I’m on stage ya know, I slip into that deep sleep. Hm, Yeah I don’t know. I’ve never sat and taken account of how things go. You just have to play what you feel. I never think in terms of that. We just go as the moment goes. I think its more, I think, I don’t really think when it comes down to music. It’s more like the weather, you don’t know if it’s going to be rainy or sunny, but it’s gonna go wherver it’s gonna go.

Ya know what, I’m always hearing - there’s always so many different things going on in my head that I hear - It’s just like, I could sit there, and sometimes I could sit in front of people, and if I have a guitar in my hand they could be talking and all of a sudden a song comes. It might be just a rhythm in their voice or a melody. Take Little Richard for example, he was working on the song Luciel and he heard a locomotive and all of a sudden heard duduchadaduduchada and then all of a sudden he started going duduchadaduduchada ya know. I’ll

Do you think you guys have settled in together by now?

About 5 years.

Do you feel yourself getting better still?

Ah, it’s so fun to watch you guys talk to each other up there. How long have y’all been playing togther?

Ah no, no. Music is my high.

Yeah, we’re working on it. Ya know, Im still figuring it out. I’m still figuring the guitar out

Would you care for a hit of a spliff?

I don’t know, I just play music and don’t worry about the labels.

It comes through

Do you consider yourself an artist?

Ya know I’ve never thought about it. I’ve never sat down and thought about it and I don’t know that you really can, think about it. Ya know, music just takes you anywhere. It’s like being asleep, in a dream, until the music stops then you wake up.

“I’m just gonna feel your pulse okay?”

Oh I don’t know if I took over, I’m still the student, I’m still trying to figure out these guys. Ya know, those cats, you won’t hear about them in guitar player magazine. Just because they’re not widely known to the public but everyone heard them.

Well, I’ll start with the first one, because he’s from my hometown, he’s from my neighborhood. He was the great genius of guitar, I’ll have to go with Jimmy Hendricks first. He’s from Seattle. After that, James Brown, Motown, Stax Records the list could go on. Now if I said Guitarist, I would have to say people like Steve Cropper from Booker T and the MGs. Jimmy Nolan who played with James Brown, Catfish Collins who was Bootsy Colins’s brother who play on Sex Machine. Bessie Smith the emperous of blues from the 1920s. BB King Freddy King Albert King, Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, Sam Cook. Most of the stuff I dig ends around 1970 somewhere. I don’t go any farther than about that.

I’ll see, Give me say, a hundred years. I’ll call you and let you know.

hear a washing machine, or a car making a noise, or whatever. Ya know your body makes music anyway. When your heartbeats, or walking down the street and your hear a certain rhythm and you know, I don’t know what that is, but imma find out something about that. So I’m still figuring that out. There’s always things I’m seeing in my head. I try and get all of it out but I’ve probably only got two percent of it out. Ya know, there’s another ninetyeight percent in there I’m trying to figure out. As soon as I figure out the guitar I’ll let you know.

jimmy James is the lead guitarist for the True Lovers. He speaks with thought, honesty, and constant fillers. Often he had no idea how to answer questions about art and motivation. He plays the guitar and apears to seldom think about playing guitar which I can’t help but be envious of. Our interview trailed off as a old drunk man needed serious medical attention.
