Schools to lead project on First World War Report by Jim Sharpe SCHOOLS in Maghull will take part in a project about the First World War and its impact on the area, with the help of a £10,000 lottery grant. The project will be led by St Andrew’s CE Primary School which has received the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The school itself was built as a memorial to those who died in the First World War. Staff and pupils will work with other schools in the town and community groups to paint a picture of what life was like in Maghull 100 years ago. A play by Paul Eatock, head of drama at Maghull High School will be performed by St Andrew’s Players and other projects and curriculum packs using expertise from schools, churches, interested members

of the public and Maghull Town Council are being prepared. Town Councillor Bruce Hubbard, a local historian who specialises in the First World War and guides visitors on the battlefields of Belgium and France, will give a talk on ‘Maghull’s Great War.’ He will invite contributions from anyone who has family stories, letters, diaries and other war memorabilia. The talk will include photographs and film footage of key local sites including Moss Side Hospital and Maricourt School. Dr John Rowlands, who has made a study of Moss Side Hospital, used to treat servicemen suffering from shellshock, will also be on hand to answer questions. A public meeting on the project will be held at St Andrew’s School on Thursday, June 26.

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING MOGGIES Report by

Holly Rummens

A MYSTERIOUS rise in the number of cats going missing across Maghull has sparked a warning to owners to be vigilant. Concern over the missing moggies was raised after a resident noticed an increase in the number of missing cat posters being placed around the Lathom Drive and Ennerdale Drive area of the town. Around a a dozen posters and shop adverts have been placed in the area reporting cats that have gone missing within the last two or three weeks. She told the Champion: “It is unusual for this amount of cats to go missing at the same time. What’s more all the cats reported missing are small and black and white, I am not sure if

that is just a coincidence or not. All the posters have said the cats come from either Lathom Drive or Ennerdale Drive which are really close to each other, so it’s not like they are going missing miles apart. “Cat owners need to be vigilant and be aware of the number of cats that have gone missing. It must be really upsetting for their owners.” A woman on Ennerdale Avenue is one of the people whose cat, Alfie, mysteriously disappeared. She said: “Alfie was the runt of the litter, her mother was a feral cat and rejected him, so I decided to take him in until we could find a home. “But we fell in love with him and agreed to keep him. He is such a lovely little character and is only two years old, this is totally out of character for him as he can be wary of strangers.

Some of my neighbours have also had cats go missing, I just don’t know how to explain it.” A spokesperson from Melling–based Carla Lane Animal Rescue said there were various reasons why cats can go missing. She said: “Cats can go astray for many reasons, usually they lose their bearings for some reason and can’t find their way home again. “Some can revert to a wild state and manage to hunt or scavenge food, but most being domesticated animals will struggle to survive. “There are lots of fascinating insects and birds that cats will be curious about in Spring, so they could venture a little further than usual if something takes them by surprise. “A wise precaution for owners is to keep cats in overnight before darkness falls.”
