This is my favorite place in Laos because I love the atmosphere of these small quiet shops where the lamps seem to shed light on small life scenes taking place in front of the ancient damaged walls of a theater. A very specific Thakhek mood I love.

That Sikhottabong

The heart of the former Sikhottabong kingdom, the holiest site in the province has long been a place of religious worship and has received several renovations over the centuries. The stupa is said to contain bones of the Buddha and hosts the province’s largest festival during the full moon in February. As the sun lowers in the sky, monks chant in the sanctuary, bringing a profound sense of calm.

With a wealth of limestone mountains nearby, comes an equal wealth of caves. See a few of the most popular within a 20km radius of Thakhek. Tham Xang (Elephant Cave) sits closest to the city and has a formation that resembles an elephant’s head. This cave is quite popular as a shrine for locals.

This geological phenomenon was caused by shifts in the earth’s crust, but locals believed it was built by giants in ancient times. The wall looks strong enough to keep out invaders. Local Christians even use the area as an outdoor chapel.

The limestone mountains of the Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area absorb and filter rainwater, which springs up in clear blue lagoons nearby. Khoun Kong Leng is a beautiful example of this phenomenon and the innermost section is closed to tourists as villagers consider it a holy site. On weekends and public holidays, locals come here in droves to swim and picnic. Local restaurant stalls nearby cater a variety of local foods, so a great place to relax for the afternoon before moving on to your next destination.

SI PHAN DON – THE ORIGINAL RIVER LIFE EXPERIENCE TEXT BY CONNOR BEDARD PHOTOGRAPHS BY BART VERWEIJ / SWISSCONTACT

S

i Phan Don, which literally translates to Four Thousand Islands, is where I came to understand the true meaning of 'sabai sabai' or 'taking it easy'. Since visiting these river islands I've had the feeling that the pace of life in the rest of Laos is a little fast. At the southernmost tip of Champasak Province, on the border with Cambodia, the Mekong River expands to its widest breadth, up to 14 kilometres, until it reaches the South China Sea. As the river falls in the dry season hundreds of islands reappear, some no more than just the top of a tree, to unveil an extensive archipelago. In a landlocked country this is as close to an island paradise as you’ll get. I travelled the two-and-a-half-hour journey from Pakse to Nakasong Pier by taxi and hopped on a small boat to Don Khone Island. As the boat driver navigated our way through the maze of islands I was overcome with a sense of tranquility. There is an innate calmness about this place. Twenty minutes later I was on Don Khone where I checked in to the lovely Sengahloune Resort, took a quick dip in the pool, and headed out to explore the island. I made my way to Li Phi Waterfall, a spectacular site where the mighty Mekong goes vertical. I sipped from a fresh coconut on the beach and watched the sun set over Cambodia, before heading for the nightlife on Don Det. After a short and bumpy taxi ride I ended up at Adam’s Bar, where I enjoyed some good music, a mean gin and tonic and a few games on their foosball table. While getting to know some of the locals, I got the sense that some people just wash ashore here and never leave. The next day, I decided to take a day tour. My options included: a boat trip to see the Irrawaddy dolphins, a visit to Khone Phapheng waterfall (the largest waterfall in Asia by volume), bicycling and kayaking around the islands – all worthy options. However, I opted for something a little off the beaten path: The River Life Experience Tour. This is an authentic excursion that offers visitors a chance to witness daily life in Si Phan Don and to interact and learn from the locals. The tour also directly benefits local tour guides, tour operators and villagers.

I met up with my guide, Mr. Sai, on Don Det and we headed out on the 45-minute boat journey to Don Loppardi Island. Unlike Don Det or Don Khone, which cater to tourists, the island of Don Loppardi seems untouched by foreigners. Wandering through the island, I felt as though I was seeing life as it's been for hundreds of years. We visited a Buddhist temple, with an impressive seven-headed Naga, just as the villagers were bringing offerings to the monks for lunch. Mr. Sai brought me to a local distillery where lao-Lao, the ubiquitous and dangerous rice whiskey, is made. After a shot – or two – I felt brave enough to try my hand at some basket weaving. A local artisan was kind enough to teach me how to weave a sticky rice basket, although

GETTING THERE Nakasong is located 144km south of Pakse. Taxis are available through many travel companies in Pakse. Buses depart daily from Pakse to Nakasong and tickets can be arranged through hotels and travel agencies. In Nakasong, boat taxis regularly depart for Don Det and Don Khone and tickets can be purchased at the pier.

I never got close to the breakneck speed that these ladies work at. We departed Don Loppardi and headed out for the main event of the day, a lesson in traditional fishing methods from a local fisherman. He showed me the different techniques people have been using to catch fish here for hundreds of years and taught me how to throw a fishing net. After a few tries, I caught a silver-scaled fish about the size of my hand – beginner’s luck. Ten minutes later, my catch was roasting over a fire along with some proper meal-sized Mekong fish. We sat together on the beach and ate our fish with sticky rice, jeo (a spicy dip), and papaya salad; a real Lao-style lunch. This tour really highlights what makes Si Phan Don so great: the relaxed pace of life, beautiful untouched nature and genuinely kind people.

WHERE TO STAY Sengahloune Resort, located on Don Khone, recently added a hotel that has some of the nicest rooms on the Islands, complete with fabulous Mekong views and a relaxing pool. Sala Don Khone, as the name suggests, is also located on Don Khone, boasts classic French colonial architecture and floating rooms. Little Eden, located on Don Det, has a tranquil pool, quality accommodation, and one of the best sunset views.

WHERE TO EAT Chez Fred et Lea offers classic French and Lao dishes, give the Mekong fish steamed in banana leaf a try. Mama Leuah restaurant has a peaceful atmosphere and the best German-style meatballs in the South. You’re guaranteed friendly service and good coffee at Mr. Mo’s Restaurant where the fish hot-pot is second to none. Adam’s Bar has wonderful cakes and boasts the best burger on the Islands. T

ake a stroll through the markets of Laos and you will surely see the sinh, the long wraparound skirt which is the national dress for women. A vast array of patterns and colors allows women to be able to match the right sinh to any occasion. Sensing that these beautiful styles lacked a similar male outlet for sartorial expression, local fashionista Phonethida Somsaarth embarked on creating her own clothing brand: Mouvement. “In the past, there were only a few Vietnamese tailors making clothes for men which were rather basic. Now men’s tastes and interests in fashion have changed. Men are increasingly aware of global trends and styles on TV and online, so a simple suit is no longer sufficient,” she said. Before opening, Phonethida enrolled in a short course locally to apprentice and to build her knowledge and skill in men’s fashion. “At the beginning, I was doing everything from measuring, to cutting and sewing. Now I have built the shop up and have many staff, so I can focus more on handling customers and growing the business,” she added. Mouvement now has two locations in Vientiane, aimed at serving discerning gentlemen who wish to be on the cutting edge of male fashion: the main branch in Phonsinouan, and a secondary branch in That Luang. “We are considering expanding to other regions in the country, but we want to make sure that we maximize our reach in the Vientiane market first,” said Phonethida.

MORE INFO Mouvement’s main branch is located on Phonsinouan Street in Ban Dongpalanethong and can be contacted at 020 23 244 339 or facebook.com/ mouvementbrandlaos

The shops have a wide variety of suits on hand to give ideas in selecting the right style, cut, and color. Fabrics in use include imported wools, polyesters, and linen. Phonethida is also inspired by traditional textiles made in Laos, so to bring more focus to local materials she has even begun using locally produced cotton and silk.

“MEN ARE INCREASINGLY AWARE OF GLOBAL TRENDS AND STYLES ON TV AND ONLINE, SO A SIMPLE SUIT IS NO LONGER SUFFICIENT” Staff are on hand in every step of the process to assist and offer advice to ensure the client is completely satisfied. “At Mouvement, we focus on service. We offer free alterations for the lifetime of the suit, so if you gain or lose a few kilograms, we will alter the suit at no charge. If you care for your suit, it can last more than ten years!” adds Phonethida. The tailors in the workshop are also very experienced and able to create artistic pieces in both Lao and foreign sizes. Phonethida mentions, “we have begun getting more and more Westerners to our shop and we are delighted to be able to share a piece of Laos that they can take back to their countries.” SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

A century ago, films burst onto the scene and left a lasting visual legacy in many cities in the region. TEXT BY JASON ROLAN & PHIL JABLON PHOTOGRAPHS BY PHIL JABLON

or over a decade, American historian Phil Jablon has been documenting stand-alone cinemas throughout Southeast Asia as a window into the cultural heritage of the past. These were previously the centers of communities and represent fine examples of 20th century architecture. Unfortunately, with the surge in multiplexes in the region, local family-run cinemas have nearly died out – taking along the spirit of community that these once created. His goal is to bring awareness to these treasures in the hope that they can be repurposed and used again to revitalize towns. Of the hundreds of cinemas documented by the project, here Phil presents a selection of cinemas that are easy to visit on your own with Lao Airlines. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

LAO CHALEUN SAVANNAKHET A tourist brochure for Savannaket city dates the Lao Chaleun Cinema to the 1930s. This was the most edifying abandoned theater I've found to date. I was told that it was built with the intention of being the anchor for the entire two rows of commercial and residential buildings that it's attached to, an interesting concept in itself. An entire neighborhood built around a cinema! It is divided into two separate sections. The facade faces onto Kaysone Phomvihan Road, while the main auditorium is in another building in a back alley. A long corridor leads from the front entrance to the auditorium in the rear, while the two sections are connected by a patio bridge.

RACHINEE THEATER LUANG PRABANG It was back in 1966 that the Rachinee Theater first opened to the public, under the stewardship of the Sisaleumsak family. The Rachinee stopped showing films back in 1993, after which it was transformed into a karaoke bar for a period. After UNESCO proclaimed Luang Prabang a World Heritage Site, however, the karaoke bar was deemed out of character with the French colonial heritage theme and was ordered to close. The old Rachinee Theater's most recent incarnation was as the Lao Blossom Residence.

THE SCALA BANGKOK

THOLAPHAP THEATER XIENG KHOUANG Originally, the capital of Xieng Khouang province was a town called Meuang Khoun, which was destroyed during the Indochina War. After Phonsavanh was dedicated as the new capital in the late 1970s, it was given a gift of the Tolaphap Theater by the Lao Ministry of Culture. The Tolaphap was this remote mountain region's lone theater from 1983 until it closed down in the early 1990's. It is now a banquet hall.

Call me naive, prone to exaggeration or whatever you want, but I just can't help but think that the crown jewel of Apex's movie theaters, the Scala, ranks among the finest operating movie theaters anywhere in the world. Stand-alone movie theaters of this grandeur are hard to come by these days. The financial input they require to keep them running smoothly usually out-weighs the revenue they generate. The Scala Theater opened on December 31st, 1969, fully equipped with triple-projection Cinerama, 1,200 seats and the Thai premiere of The Undefeated, starring John Wayne and Rock Hudson. It is currently still in operation, but the lease on the property expires in 2019 and may be forced to close.

SALA CHALERM THANI BANGKOK Also known as the Nang Loerng Cinema, the structure was a two storied wooden building. It had its first screening in 1918. The cinema represented the first time that a motion picture was seen by people in this area, as well as travelers who came to watch movies. In the beginning, the cinema's seats were long benches without fixed numbers. In the early days it showed silent films. A brass band was arranged to play in front of the cinema to draw the attention of the people. The brass band would move inside when the movie was started. Sala Chalerm Thani was in continuous operation until 1993, when it shut down due to the decreasing popularity of Thai films. One of Bangkok's ancient entertainment places has come to an end after serving the Thai people for 75 years. Today, the place is used as a warehouse, in ramshackle condition, waiting to be revived again.

MORE INFO This project is the subject of an upcoming book: Thailand’s Movie Theaters: Relics, Ruins, and the Romance of Escape and a potential documentary. Follow news of the project and learn more about other cinemas at seatheater.blogspot. com.

SANG TAWAN THEATER CHIANG MAI When approaching the intersection of Chang Klan and Sri Donchai Roads, a sense of loss pervades. Here on the southeast corner of this busy intersection rests the colossal remains of Chiang Mai cinemas. The facade of the Sang Tawan Theater boasted an intricate mosaic depicting Lanna culture. Now it's hidden from the public eye behind billboards. It is my hope, with enough public support, that the Sang Tawan could be revived and turned into a mixed-use venue, able to accommodate both film and live events, be it concerts, speaking engagements or plays.

LIVIN’ LA VIDA LOCA! Ride-sharing app LOCA helps you get around like a local. TEXT BY CAMERON DARKE PHOTOGRAPHS BY PHOONSAB THEVONGSA

N

ot surprisingly, to make my way over to LOCA headquarters for this story, I downloaded and installed the LOCA app. A vehicle was sent to my office to pick me up, and I tracked its progress on my mobile phone until a small, unassuming hatchback pulled neatly up against the curb. A message appeared on my screen; “I am here.” I hopped in the front seat and was greeted with a shy smile from Pui, my designated driver for the trip. Pui says most of her passengers are foreigners already familiar with the ride-sharing concept. They are often business travelers visiting the city for the first time, taking a LOCA trip from meeting to meeting. She is one of the few full-time LOCA drivers who works Monday to Friday. “My family has no idea what I’m doing. They don’t understand exactly what LOCA is. But they are happy that I’m working,” she says, noting that before LOCA she was unemployed. “I worked as a delivery driver a few years ago. I liked the freedom it gave me, so I thought I’d try this. I get to be my own boss and I meet a lot of new people.”

With over 900,000 vehicles on the road and no viable public transport system in sight, traffic in Vientiane is becoming a thing. A thing mentioned in casual conversation, a thing appearing in news reports, and a thing to be battled during the daily commute. Roads are small, cars are big, and people still double park to buy a bunch of bananas. It’s no wonder, then, that local tech firm Bizgital put their heads together and came up with a solution. Arriving at the Bizgital building, I input a special promo code and find 80,000 kip sitting in my LOCA virtual wallet. The trip cost 25,000 kip, leaving me with some extra credit. Pui waits for her next passenger, and I head up the stairs to meet Souliyo Vongdala, Chief Technology Officer at Bizgital, and the man behind the LOCA ride-sharing app. It took six months for the team to draft the driver registration procedures, and Souliyo assures me that all drivers are thoroughly screened. They are provided a training video, and their first few rides are monitored to ensure they adhere to LOCA’s internal safety regulations. “We have systems in place to minimize safety risks, although we can’t be there for every trip. If a vehicle’s insurance policy expires, for example, that vehicle will be automatically sus-

pended until a new insurance policy is taken out.” Cash payment was out initially, says Souliyo, but it was brought back in at a later stage due to high demand. And the problem of cash management turned out to be an opportunity. “If you complete a trip that’s worth 50,000, you can give the driver a 100,000 kip note and ask them to deposit the remainder into your LOCA virtual wallet. That way you’ll have 50,000 kip in your account to use for future trips. The system automatically manages this.” Drivers are paid weekly, and can choose their own working hours. However, being an entirely new concept, many drivers are apprehensive at first, unsure if they will turn a profit. To combat this, LOCA is investing heavily by setting guaranteed payments for drivers in case they don’t get enough traffic. The dearth of public transportation is one of the reasons the LOCA app was created. But Souliyo sees more opportunities for his application with corporate clients, who can now send employees around town without the use of private vehicles. “Your company will have access to a back end system, and you can add employees into your account. LOCA will bill you for trips at the end of the month.

Not only will you know how much it costs, but also where your staff have been. It’s fair for both sides.” When asked if he’s worried about competition from taxis, Souliyo smiles. He knows that LOCA is cheaper than a taxi, and easier to find. And it eliminates discrimination against tourists, who are often charged double by devious taxi drivers. The application now has over two thousand registrants, including over fifty drivers. But surprisingly, the biggest request from local people so far has been an extension of the app to include motorbike taxis. And LOCA is working with insurance agencies to make this happen. “Even me, I want to take a motorbike taxi because it will be cheaper and faster during peak hour,” says Souliyo. LOCA trips can be paid for with Visa or MasterCard, as well as cash, and the developers are working with local finance institutions to bring QR code payments online. So the future looks bright for LOCA, which plans to expand to every major city in Laos within the next few years. When asked about the name of the app, Souliyo gives another knowing smile, and says that all the proposed names were thoroughly researched.

“IT’S FAIR FOR BOTH SIDES”

K

hammouane is home to a striking range of limestone karst mountains. Eroded over eons by rainfall, extraordinary caves lie in many of the hills, perfect for those seeking to get deep into Laos. Most caves are not very developed, so do remember a flashlight!

XIENG LIEP CAVE This cave was named for a legendary monk. Located close to Thakhek, this cave can be visited all year round. In the rainy season, it is possible to travel through by boat.

DRAGON CAVE Located along the famous Khammouane Loop, it is named for the rock formation that looks like a dragon. Due to mineral deposits, some of the formations appear to sparkle here! SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

KHOUNKEO CAVE Another of Khammouane's many caves formed by a river carving a path through a limestone mountain. This one was only discovered in 2012 and is home to some rare cave wildlife such as giant huntsman spiders and centipedes.

KHOUN XE CAVE One of the most remote caves, Khoun Xe is located near the Vietnamese border. A diďŹƒcult dirt path to it is impassable in the rainy season. Explorers can kayak in the cave and visit some immense chambers.

NANG AAN CAVE Located an easy drive from Thakhek, this cave is equipped with facilities, such as lighting and handrails, to assist even the least experienced caver. On its underground lake, you can even enjoy a boat ride.

ine hand-woven silk apparel, delicious mulberry wines, teas, and jams are just a few of the delights to discover at Mulberries Organic Silk Farm in Xieng Khouang, Laos, where a thousand-year-old tradition continues on this plantation just a step away from the mysterious Plain of Jars. This social enterprise, founded in 1993 by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Kommaly Chanthavong, empowers disadvantaged rural women and values environmentally sustainable practices in the community. It’s her belief that women who pass down the silk cultivation and weaving tradition have greatest societal impact through educating their children and providing stability. Mulberries supports work-study students who can attend the local technical college on scholarships. They are mostly young women who would otherwise lack the opportunity for an education beyond primary school and are often at risk. These graduates go on to become leaders by involving their village in all aspects of silk production from cultivating cocoons and harvesting fields to weaving in their homes. On the farm there are several buildings dedicated to various stages of production which take place year round, although the peak season for harvesting is during the late summer and early autumn. In one area, a wall of small silkworm condos houses thousands of cocoons which are needed to meet the high demand for silk. Amazingly, the silkworm creates a single cocoon that produces a 600 meter length of thread. This is extracted in a boiling bath which loosens the thread, and then spun together to make the yarn used in weaving. Visitors can try their hand at various stages of the process of making fine silk products from spinning to weaving, dyeing with natural colors, or observing firsthand the life cycle and care of silkworms which no longer occur in the wild. The trainees who guide guests are cheerful and proud of their work. Visually stunning, these traditional silk products have garnered UNESCO awards for their quality and authenticity. Months are required due to the life cycle of silkworms and weaving symbolic patterns often reflective of Buddhist and animist experiences into a Lao sinh – the customary skirt worn by Lao women. A simple scarf could take at least 12 full days of laboring meticulously

MORE INFO For those unable to visit the organic farm, there is a retail shop in downtown Vientiane, along the Mekong River. Their products are also available online and can be shipped anywhere.

at large looms. This love and care is what makes these products so precious. There are colors everywhere on the farm – from the luscious mulberries used to create shades of pink, red, blue, purple, and grey, to the indigo, annatto seeds, and teak leaves that create vibrant greens, yellows and browns. Visitors can’t help but breathe in the earthy freshness of the surrounding orchards with scenic vistas of rolling hills and fields of flowers filling the senses. To fully enjoy the experience, reserve a farmstay and relax in tranquility. Nothing goes to waste here. Leaves from the white mulberry tree (Morus alba) are feed for the silkworms while the berries are used to make wine, jam, tea, dyes, soaps, and fragrant shampoos. Even the larvae of the moths are sold at the market as snacks. Profits go directly to expanding the project beyond the 300 families already receiving assistance. This venture depends on volunteers, trainees, and donations to operate. SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2018

THAILAND’S

GOLDEN

BOWL

Ang Thong is often overlooked by visitors, but this diminutive province is home to some of Thailand’s most impressive Buddha images and fascinating traditional craft villages – and it’s all easily explored on a day trip from Bangkok. TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHS BY MICK SHIPPEN

hen a gentle breeze travels across this quiet corner of the central plains and bows the heads of sun-ripened rice, it’s easy to understand why it was named Ang Thong or the “Golden Bowl.” Blessed by the waters of the Noi and Chao Phraya rivers, this fertile basin covering just 968 sq km (373 sq miles) is a beautiful canvas of paddy fields lined with palm trees that reach skyward like strokes from a calligrapher’s brush. In this rural idyll, it’s hard to believe that bustling Bangkok is little more than 100 kilometres away. Originally known as Meuang Wiset Chai Chan, Ang Thong’s low-lying riverside location made it an important frontier outpost of Thailand’s former capital, Ayutthaya, when fending off Burmese invaders. However, several chronicles of the period detail the battle of Bang Rachan in 1767, a noted event in Thai history when the invading army camped out in the area before marching on Ayutthaya and bringing about its downfall. When the capital was relocated to Thonburi, Meuang Wiset Chai Chan also moved to a new site on the left bank of the Chao Phraya River at Ban Bang Kaew and was renamed Ang Thong. In the years that followed, it gained a reputation for producing tons of high quality jasmine rice, and the provincial seal is a bowl of ripened rice ears, the symbol of Mae Phosop, the goddess of rice. For today’s travellers, the UNESCO World Heritage town of Ayutthaya is the main attraction

on the central plains but as many are now discovering, pushing on the extra 30 kilometres to the “Golden Bowl” has its own rewards. Many locals are drawn to a trio of temples which house revered Buddha images; each said to grant wishes to the devout. The most impressive of the three is Wat Meuang, home to Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, the largest Buddha statue in the country and the ninth tallest in the world. This spectacular 92-m high (300 ft) and 63-m (210 ft) wide seated Buddha towers over worshippers as they reach up to grasp its huge fingernails and whisper their prayers. Construction of this monumental golden image began in 1990 and was finally completed in 2008. Today, the faithful make merit here in the belief that they will be more successful in business. The second temple on the Ang Thong pilgrimage trail is Wat Khun Inthra Pramun, home to a 50-metre Phra Non or reclining Buddha image, the second longest in Thailand. Rather fittingly, the temple is visited by those wishing for a long life. This historic site dates from the Sukhothai period (1238–1438) but was sacked by an invading Burmese army in 1569. Ruins of the original temple buildings can still be seen, and the archaeological footprint shows that this was once a huge and significant temple in the region – undoubtedly the most important in Ang Thong. Originally, the reclining Buddha was housed in a viharn or assembly hall but when the temple was burned to the ground, it was abandoned and open to the elements for centuries. Fortunately, it was rediscovered and restored to its former glory. Over the years it has borne witness to several Thai kings paying homage here including King Borommakot in 1753, King Rama V in 1878 and 1908, and the former King Bhumibol in 1973 and again in 1975 when he came to make offerings. With its serene smiling face and body draped in a huge saffron robe, the magnificent white Buddha is a visually arresting sight, and, whether you come as a pilgrim in search of blessings or not, it makes the trip to Ang Thong worthwhile. The final temple, Wat Chantharangsi, houses a 10-metre image of Phra Mongkol Thepmunee, also known as Luang Por Sod, a highly revered monk who passed away half a century ago but still draws the faithful to their knees in the hope that he will bless them with good health.

RURAL CRAFTS In keeping with many rural communities across the country, the rice farmers of Ang Thong province have long been tied to the seasonal rhythms of sow and reap. During the growing season and after harvest when there was little work to do, many turned their hand to crafts. One such village is Ban Phae which has been making traditional drums for temples, processions and celebrations since the 1920s. Although the method of making the drums may have been updated with the use of mechanical lathes, the use of rain tree wood, cured cowhide and time-honoured designs remain unchanged. With more than 50 families still making drums, it’s a fascinating place to watch artisans at work and visitors are free to wander into the many workshops that line the road. Despite the ingenuity and skill of Ban Phae craftsmen and women, other farming communities in the area have found it harder to make ends meet during leaner times; a fact recognised decades ago by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, a passionate supporter of rural crafts. In 1976 she was instrumental in establishing Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Centre with the sole purpose of

1

helping the villagers earn a supplementary income. Visitors to the cooperative, which is in a stilted wooden house once common across the central plains, can see ladies making tiny Thai court dolls and ornate clay figures that depict the traditional Thai way of life from a bygone era. It is painstaking work that requires patience and dexterous fingers to create scenes of Thai orchestras performing, floating markets, and elegant Thai dancers, all in miniature. Although most of Ang Thong’s treasures are in the surrounding villages, the town’s San Chao Rong Thong market should not be overlooked. Here, enthusiastic foodies can discover local delicacies and watch tempting treats such as delicious rice flour wraps filled with sweetened grated coconut being deftly rolled on a hotplate.

or a culinary finale to your Lao meal, Naam Vaan is a perfect choice. Arguably the most popular Lao dessert, Naam Vaan is a sweet, thick broth comprising a selection of finely picked fruits and other sweet additions like jelly, beans, and sweet corn in coconut milk. While a typical Naam Vaan tends to privilege a particular fruit as its star, Kualao’s interpretation of the Naam Vaan is all about equal opportunity and thus creates a zesty fruit salad melange with rice balls. This Kualao signature dessert is served in a wonderfully fresh coconut shell with plenty of coconut flesh inside, making for an exquisite way to smoothen the palate after that heavy Lao meal.

ientiane has long been known as a foodie paradise. With its extensive array of restaurants catering to every taste, from local and regional food, to an abundance of international restaurants, visitors to Vientiane, together with those living there, have found themselves with a wonderful range of options. Since its opening in April 2018, however, 3 Merchants restaurant has fast become known as one of the top places to eat here. The restaurant, which is situated next to the Elephant Lounge on the ground floor of the Crowne Plaza, combines elegant dining with an inspired menu of both local and fusion dishes. From the outstanding food, to the colonial décor, this restaurant brings fusion food right up to date. 3 Merchants offers a choice of high quality dishes from Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia, together with a fusion menu blending

Overlooked by portraits of the symbolical Desirée, Serena, and Grace, the 3 Merchants restaurant provides desirable food, in a serene atmosphere, by friendly professional staff who are graceful under pressure. Their philosophy, ‘connecting with people’ is important to everyone in the restaurant and this is reflected throughout the meal. They are keen to provide an experience which brings together energy and heritage. And they succeed. Troy Medynski, the Director of Food and Beverages for Crowne Plaza in Vientiane, began his career at the Sheraton on the Gold Coast in Australia. He is passionate about the fresh flavors found in locally sourced food, and proud of the way his team of expert chefs have brought the fusion menu to life here in Laos and the passion they, together with the other restaurant staff, all have for the food and beverage services they deliver. Bringing techniques previously unseen in Laos, and applying them alongside some of Southeast Asia’s finest cooking traditions, has enabled him to bring this exciting new dining experience to Vientiane. With such attention to detail, the 3 Merchants provides an exquisite dining experience that encompasses the best of Indochina’s flavors with a modern twist.

the best fresh tastes and powerful flavours found in Southeast Asia with those from the west using modern techniques to produce something quite remarkable. From the beef wellington, its mushroom paté infused with the tastes of Vietnam, served alongside an Asian coleslaw prepared at the table and perfectly cooked French fries with 3 Merchant’s signature salt, to the miso glazed barramundi on a bed of black sticky rice, the food surprises and delights. Even the desserts, such as the classic Thai favorite of mango with sticky rice has been given a contemporary feel with an intense mango mousse, passion fruit pearls, and coconut snow. As Tristan Raclet, the restaurant manager explained, the three merchants embody three commodities which are fundamental in the history of Southeast Asia; salt, rice and rice wine. These are represented by the signature salt, infused with lemongrass, ginger, and chili; the rice which is complementary with all dishes; and the “lycheecello”, a 3 Merchants’ creation.

Lao Airlines Offers Assistance to Flood Victims Extreme weather during this rainy season has caused widespread flooding, and led to the unfortunate dam collapse disaster at the Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy dam. This disaster struck Sanamxay district in Attapeu province in July, causing catastrophic damage to property and loss of life. In order to assist those affected by the disaster, Lao Airlines held a fundraising drive and collected items including clothing, medicines, and food amounting to over 135 tons. Lao Airlines exempted ground service fees for transport planes arriving at Pakse Airport from foreign countries to deliver much-needed relief. The exemptions amounted to US$52,720.
