PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Dear Chaminade Family,
I recently got back from a family wedding in Wilmington, NC, for my nephew Kevin and his wife Monica. We had a great time together celebrating family, faith, and friends. As a big Long-Island-raised family, we happily spent a lot of time on Wrightsville beach. I learned a lot about the fascinating history of Wilmington, too much to go into in this letter. I love their motto “Persevere,” which appears on the city seal at City Hall. Wilmington, I’ll be back! (As I was waiting to board my flight home, of course I bumped into two alumni – never gets old.)
But that was my “end-of-summer” moment as we now focus on getting the school buttoned up from all the renovations that took place on campus this summer and get ready to welcome the Class of 2028! A school year ends, a new class graduates and heads off to college, and we prepare to welcome the newest Flyers to campus. I like to call it “the circle of life” here!
Looking back on this past year, it can be exhausting just recounting all that happened on campus. Recently, we graduated the Class of 2024, who started during Covid, with masks, six feet spacing, etc. They not only persevered; they thrived! They grew stronger, closer, and more resilient. As they now continue their journey, I know the world will be a better place as these newest Flyer alumni start to spread their wings.
This past year there were more than 45 alumni events throughout the country –and we attended almost all of them! I love traveling to the “hometowns” of our alumni chapters in the country and being able to share with them in person all that we are doing at 340 Jackson Avenue and where we aspire to go. I especially enjoyed the Athletic Awards Reunion back in April.
Next up – we welcome the Class of 2028 to begin their journey. This is my 43rd start of the school year here on campus. Each year, the same palpable excitement builds around August as we prepare to welcome a new class. From the first day of 3-C Week, they are fully welcomed into an ever-growing family, a family that has been around since 1930.
This summer we renovated the cafeteria, the same space that thousands of students have eaten lunch in for the past 94 years! As the terrazzo floors were being buffed and polished, the gentleman doing the job commented, “These floors have been here for almost 100 years, and they are in amazing shape!” Just think of that; we will be celebrating our 100th anniversary, our Chaminade centennial, in about five years. I am so excited to think of the possibilities of where we will be as an institution when we reach 100. I invite you all to enjoy the runway as we prepare to celebrate 100 years of faith, family, and friendship.
be a better place as these newest Flyer alumni start to spread their wings."
Bro. Thomas J. Cleary, S.M. ’81 President
P.S. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge all of your kind words about the passing of Buster. He was more than just my dog; Buster was a beloved member of our Chaminade Family, and I enjoyed sharing him with you all for 14 years. He will most certainly be missed by all of us.
Sailing Off into New Horizons
CHAMINADE'S CLASS OF 2024
“So in the end, these three remain: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.” Quoting St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians, Bro. Joseph Bellizzi, S.M. ’78, addressed Chaminade’s graduating Class of 2024. Conferring his final class of diplomas as principal, Bro. Joseph offered wisdom on the simple ways God moves in all of our lives. “Faith makes everything possible. Hope makes everything work. Love makes everything beautiful. May you have all three as you begin each day.”
On Sunday, June 2, 2024, on a bright and sunny afternoon at LIU Post’s Tilles Center, the Chaminade Family gathered together to celebrate and honor 374 graduates as they walked across the graduation stage and became the newest class of Chaminade alumni. Families and generations of graduates came together to honor the next step in the legacy of Chaminade’s educational experience.
Salutatorian Quentin Castellano opened the ceremonies by introducing the legacy of Chaminade’s relational formation of young men. “The love that we have for one another is an enduring love,” reflected Castellano in his address. “The love of willing the good of another. As members of the Chaminade Family, it is the trust we keep in Chaminade as an educational and religious institution that we keep close to our hearts. This trust allows us as students to grow academically and professionally.”
Many honors were given for student achievement across all six major subject areas, in service to their school and community, and in extracurricular and athletic activities. John Donald Carroll received the Joseph F. Thomas Student-Athlete Award for being the most outstanding athlete of the graduating class. James Michael Griffin IV
received the Bro. Joseph Fox Service Award for the most outstanding service to the school community.
Timothy Joseph Katz, chosen as the class valedictorian, received the Chaminade Man of the Year Award, the most cherished award of any graduating class, for his dynamic service and dedication to student life at Chaminade. The Chaminade Man Award was given by Bro. Thomas Cleary, S.M. ’81, president of Chaminade.
In his valedictorian address, Timothy encouraged his fellow graduates to take risks in life. “At Chaminade, we have taken many leaps of faith and discovered many ‘nets’ of support,” states Katz. “Regardless, as we move into the future and grow in both age and maturity, we must be able to provide ‘nets’ for others – for our spouse, for our family, for our friends, and for the world at large. In order to support those around us, we must be willing to make sacrifices and even take risks.”
The administration and faculty were present to coordinate the distribution of all degrees and awards in a process organized and implemented in rhythmic progression. After the ceremony, many graduates gathered for photos with faculty, administrators, and proud parents and grandparents to cherish the memory of such an important moment.
“So, my fellow graduates, will we drift in shallow water or venture out into the deep?” asked Timothy Katz as he closed out his valedictorian address. “Will we cravenly cling to what is known or will we bravely soar into the unknown? Will we hoard the treasure that we have been given, or will we spend it generously and expect a ten, 20, even a 100-fold return? I think we all know the answer. Leap, and the net will appear.” Congratulations to Chaminade’s newest graduating class of alumni as they embark on their next journey.

Athletic Awards Reunion
CELEBRATING CHAMPIONSHIPS AND A TRUE CHAMPION
The sun set on a gorgeous day in Mineola on April 20, 2024, setting the stage for what would be an amazing event at Chaminade’s Activity-Athletic Center. The Ring of Honor event was sponsored by Dee and Kevin Conway ’76, Jack Conway ’06, Ryan Conway ’08, and Matt Conway ’11. Approximately 350 people would gather at the second Athletic Awards Reunion to honor the Varsity Baseball Team of 1969, the Varsity Wrestling Team of 1975, the Varsity Lacrosse Team of 1997, and the Varsity Wrestling Team of 2005. Most importantly, legendary wrestling coach George Dlugolonski would be inducted into Chaminade’s Ring of Honor, recognizing his storybook career at Chaminade. Athletic Director John Honnerkamp '93 noted that, “The event is meant to serve as a reunion for all of Chaminade’s sports teams as the entire school community is invited to attend the celebration.”
As guests arrived that evening, the AAC gymnasium had been converted into an elegant dining hall: the entrance was decorated with uniforms of the celebrated teams, along with wallpaper featuring Chaminade’s current athletes. A hologram emblem of each one of Chaminade’s teams served as the centerpiece for each table. Flanking each side of the stage stood an LED video panel that would display all of the evening’s tributes.
Dave Gildea '93 served as emcee for the evening, reading tributes written by Chaminade alumnus and award-winning New York Post sports columnist Mike Vaccaro '85. Each team was introduced to the audience, along with the details of their accomplishments and accolades. They were photographed later in the evening as a unified team once again.
The main event of the evening would soon follow the team recognitions. This year, as coach George Dlugolonski received the Ring of Honor Leadership Award, a heartfelt tribute video produced by Gerry Sievers ’93, founder of Big Head Productions, was shown to a captivated audience. Upon receiving the award, Coach Dugo gave a humble and grateful acknowledgement to the school, his athletes, but above all his family, especially to his wife, Susan. Bro. Tom encapsulated the coach's tenure at Chaminade beautifully. “George was so much more than a coach; he taught the boys sportsmanship, character, discipline, and loyalty. How wonderful it was to witness so many generations of Flyers pay tribute to a man who changed lives forever!”
Current head wrestling coach Scott Cole '95 echoed these sentiments. “Coach taught me so much more than wrestling, lessons which have carried me through my professional career and personal life as well. He has been a true mentor and a great friend for many years.”
Weeks later the only word coach could find to describe this recognition was “overwhelmed.” All Ring of Honor teams and award recipients have also received a permanent spot of recognition on the newly installed digital tribute wall in the Activity-Athletic Center. Current and future Flyers can now study and observe the impact these teams and individuals have had on the Chaminade community. Congratulations to all the recognized teams, especially to Coach George Dlugolonski! This event will be celebrated again on a biannual basis.

Chaminade’s Annual Golf Open
A PICTURE PERFECT DAY
No one could have asked for better weather conditions for Chaminade’s 53rd Annual Golf and Tennis Open with temperatures in the mid-seventies and sunshine throughout the day. Over 580 players across five country clubs enjoyed yet another successful open sponsored by the Chaminade Alumni Association. That success in no small part was due to the hard work of Executive Director Bill Basel ’58, Assistant Director Kevin Parente ’82, Co-Chairmen Dave Gildea ’93 and Chris Palmer ’87, and especially Executive Chairman Ed Smith ’89. Over 90 volunteers make the day a success each year.
Ed Smith stated, “We have raised the bar these last couple of years through the efforts and leadership of a committee strongly dedicated to advancing the mission of Chaminade High School. I am grateful to all the participants, the many volunteers outside the committee, and the student workers who made this event so successful.”
Most athletes and guests totaling well over 600 would eventually converge under the tent at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove for the evening’s dinner, auctions, and festivities. Live and silent auctions combined brought in over
$530,000, shattering last year’s record of $430,000. Auction items of particular note were dinners either with Cardinal Dolan or Gen. Peter Pace USMC (Ret.), and “Games Galore,” which included 60 VIP tickets to seven different NY sports teams and the US Open. Smith wanted to especially thank Peter Doherty ’90 for his “herculean effort” in organizing and executing the auctions.
All told the day’s activities will have raised approximately $1.3 million for the event, by far the largest single fundraiser of the year for the Torch Fund. The Torch Fund bridges the gap between the revenue brought in from tuition dollars and Chaminade’s operating expenses, a gap which this past year totaled over $4.8m.
Bro. Tom encapsulated the day beautifully, “I have attended Chaminade's golf outing for the past 42 years. What amazes me each year is how connected everyone feels towards Chaminade. This is a testimony to the bonds of community and brotherhood that were forged at 340 Jackson Avenue. The brotherhood and shared experience is palpable at every alumni event, particularly the annual golf outing. For me, it is a humbling experience, filled with gratitude.”

The Mission for Life
CHAMINADE'S STEADFAST SUPPORT OF THE SISTERS OF LIFE
For many years, Chaminade’s Marianist identity has formed young men inclined towards giving of themselves for the betterment of others. One of the more wide-reaching ways Chaminade positions students for considerate and meaningful service to the community of faith and the Church is in its support of the Sisters of Life Congregation. Promulgated mainly by Chaminade’s Woodworking Club and other student service organizations, the Sisters of Life and Marianist mission for hospitality, community, and service intertwine in an intentional mission from which all students and graduates benefit. At the helm of such projects is Fr. Garrett Long, S.M. ’62, Marianist priest and skilled carpenter.
The Sisters of Life is a religious congregation of women devoted to the mission of protecting life in all its stages. The Sisters run outreach programs, maternity centers, and serve in ministerial roles throughout the country providing catechesis and witness to the love of God’s beauty and Scriptures. With the support of many alumni who have contributed their time, skills, and resources to the projects, Fr. Garrett has spearheaded the conception and construction of multiple projects at the Sisters of Life property in Montebello in Rockland County, upstate New York. Some of these projects included deer fencing, storage sheds, interior bedroom and bathroom sink top structures, and countless other projects attended to with the precision and care of master craftsmen. Recent graduates like Séamus Breslin '24,
Anthony Tast '24, Riley Trani '24, Michael Donatelli '24, Christian Aron '23, Nicholas Laddamada '23, and Matthew Moskowski '23 have all contributed to the work on a frequent basis.
Service opportunities extend in size and magnitude from day trips with small groups of students and alumni to mission-level excursions over school breaks involving larger groups of student volunteers. Regardless of the size and scale of the job being asked of him, Fr. Garrett curates enthusiasm among students, parents, and alumni who are willing to lend a hand or contribute to the growth of the Sisters of Life mission in New York. Alumni from many professional backgrounds have also lent their services to the cause. Pat Long '67, Bobby Shannon '92, Jonathan Parisi '96, Vincent Randazzo '20, Thomas Posillico '16, Jude Pizzone '21, Sean Hilbert '20, Louis Necroto '86, Michael O’Grady '16, and Brian Johnson '14 have joined work outings on more than one occasion to cover all facets and demands of the projects.
Overall, Fr. Garrett’s work has transformed both the sisters’ livelihood as they adapt to their expanding needs as a religious order in full force in the tri-state area and Chaminade’s definition of what it means to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. “If we have the service and the time, why not use it to do good?” reflects Fr. Garrett. “The students get firsthand experience with labor and craftsmanship while also supporting the mission of the Sisters. It is truly remarkable.”
