work, a sense of personal discipline, and a tenacity that has allowed you to achieve great things these past four years. Everything you have accomplished speaks of your resiliency and grit, all of which will serve you well in the years to come. May our Blessed Mother continue to guide and protect you as you continue your journey.
Year after year, we have the honor and privilege to send roughly 400 new alumni into the world, while preparing to welcome a new freshman class to begin their journey as Chaminade Men. It’s a lot of work for all involved, for the students, the parents, and the faculty and staff at Chaminade. A lot of work indeed, but we get to see firsthand students develop and grow from reticent 13-yearolds into 17-year-old young men ready to go and make a difference in our world. Some days are challenging, I’ll be honest, but every day is rewarding.
In May we hosted the NYSSMA music festival at Chaminade. It took place over two days and involved more than 1,000 students and judges from across Long Island. One of the judges shared this in an email after the event:
Well…another school year in the books! Graduation for the Class of 2023 was wonderful. I am so proud of these young men! This year’s graduation was my 43rd here at Chaminade, including my own. I commented to several parents on graduation day howdespite having attended 43 of these consecutively - the day never gets old for me. I had the same excitement and adrenaline rush this year that I had decades ago!
In my remarks this year just prior to awarding the Chaminade Man of the Year Award, I said to the parents:
When you dropped your sons off on that sunny August morning for the first day of 3-C, your sons became our sons. It has been a privilege and honor helping to raise the boys you dropped off four years ago into the young men who sit before us today. Thank you for entrusting your sons to our care.
And to the seniors who just received their diplomas, I said:
Gentlemen, live lives of consequence! You’re here because someone took care of you, and you now have the responsibility to take care of others and to make a change for good in this world. And I know you can: you have demonstrated hard
I asked one of the Chaminade student volunteers what makes Chaminade so special. He said the care that all the students are given. “Caring” for him was explained further. “They care about our faith; they care about our schoolwork; they care about our mental and physical health.” I felt the care, kindness, and the duty each student had for himself as well for others. There is a feeling of faith and caring throughout the halls of Chaminade. It was an honor and a pleasure to be present, not only to judge but to witness a hope for the future, through faith, love, and devotion to the essentials of life. Chaminade is a special place of learning and growing through a truly Christian education. I felt this through your staff and students.
Now you know why often I say that what we get to do each and every day here is a privilege and a joy! It is an email like this one which reminds all of us of the important mission of Chaminade High School and the reason why we continue to need your support and prayers.
I hope you had a wonderful summer. And please, if you are in the area, drop in to say hello, it’s what families do!
Bro. Thomas J. Cleary, S.M. ’81 PresidentEvery year, Chaminade honors and celebrates the four-year commitment and dedication of the graduating class. The journey that began with those first apprehensive steps on 3-C Week culminates in the confident stride across the stage at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post. The graduates of the Class of 2023 are the newest members of the Chaminade alumni network. On a day of celebration, several Flyers garnered special recognition.
Assistant Principal of Academics Mr. Robert Paul ’92 noted the obstacles this group of seniors has overcome. “The Class of 2023 has truly left an indelible mark on Chaminade High School. Their immense talent, perseverance, and dedication have been evident in every aspect of their academic and extracurricular pursuits. Despite facing disruptions to their learning and activities, they adapted with remarkable agility, embracing online education and finding innovative ways to stay connected and support one another. Their ability to navigate through these unprecedented times showcases their strength of character and determination.”
Aidan Weber received the 2023 Chaminade Man of the Year Award, bestowed upon the most outstanding senior in the graduating class. At the top of his class academically, Aidan was also very active in Parish Religious Education Program, Science Club, and track and field. Mr. Andrew Corcoran ’01, Science Department chairman, noted, “Aidan is a dedicated scholar indeed. However, his positive attitude and willingness to help others separates him from his peers. He sets a fine example in scholarship, dedication, and compassion to others. He truly is the embodiment of the Chaminade Man.”
Salutatorian Anthony Vazquez received the Marianist Excellence Award, given to the second most outstanding senior in the graduating class. He was also recognized with Certificates of Merit in both social studies and mathematics.
Patrick Mulryan was the winner of the Frank “Boiler” Burns Student-Athlete Award, Chaminade’s second-highest award for a student-athlete. Mulryan is one of the most successful runners in Chaminade’s history. Mr. Kevin Beirne ’00, Chaminade’s track coach, remarked, “He set the all-time school record for the 5K in cross-country, ran the third all-time mark in the 1000 indoors, and
the fourth all-time mark for the mile outdoors. On top of all that, he is a very impressive student and a team leader.”
Gavin Creo, winner of the Joseph F. Thomas Student-Athlete Award, the highest honor for a student-athlete, excelled on the field and in the classroom. A four-year football and lacrosse player, Creo augmented his athletic excellence with leadership qualities and unrivaled dedication and sportsmanship.
John Boccio is a face - and voice - that left an indelible mark on the student body. Winner of the Bro. Joseph Fox, S.M. Service Award, Boccio was a constant presence at Chaminade, most notably for his work in the Sports Broadcasting Team. “John was among the most proactive students I have encountered in my 16 years teaching at Chaminade,” said Mr. Patrick Reichart ’01, moderator of the team. “His can-do attitude, work ethic, and concern for others should serve as inspirations to us all. The positive impact he had on the Chaminade community will continue to be felt for years to come.”
Winner of the John R. Lenz “Semper Fidelis” Award, football and baseball player Matthew Dieguez is another member of the class to embody the best of Chaminade. Mr. Michael Dolce ’99, religion teacher and assistant varsity football coach, said, “Matt took on the extraordinary responsibilities of being the quarterback and all that entails. If your best players are also the hardest workers, then you are bound to have success. Matt was all of that for us through his four years.”
Surely the newest alumni of the Class of 2023 will continue to soar and share their talents and gifts from God with the world.

Chaminade’s commitment to fostering a lifelong community of students, parents, and alumni has been steadfast for nearly one century. Standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before us, we honor these pivotal members of our family. They indeed continue to shape the Chaminade experience and live out our mission.
• Victor Ganzi '64, Distinguished Alumnus Award
• Jan and Ed O'Sullivan P '86, Founders Award
• General Peter Pace, USMC (Ret.) and Mrs. Lynne Pace, Founders Award
President Bro. Thomas Cleary, S.M. ’81, explained the genesis of the Legacy of Leadership reception. “When we began to ‘reimagine’ events after COVID shut things down for almost two years, we envisioned one event that honored those who played a significant role at Chaminade or on behalf of Chaminade’s mission. Simply, it’s those who have helped to shape and build the legacy of Chaminade High School.”
Mr. Victor Ganzi was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. A graduate of the Class of 1964, Ganzi has served and is currently serving on the board of directors of numerous corporations, firms, and philanthropic organizations. After graduating from Chaminade, he received his undergraduate degree from Fordham University and later earned law degrees from Harvard and New York University. After serving as a former member of the board of directors of the PGA Tour, including some time as president, and an 18-year tenure at Hearst Corporation, where he served as president and CEO as the company grew into an $8 billion revenue entity, it was his roots at Chaminade that propelled him.
“Chaminade is a special institution. What I've come to realize is that the education that Chaminade gives its students is an asset the rest of their lives. But in addition, the school teaches you how to work with people, teaches you how to persevere in what you do,
teaches you very, very good work habits - things that last for the rest of your life,” remarked Ganzi. More than just a profoundly successful businessman, however, Ganzi has seen that the opportunity to be a part of the mission at Chaminade is available to as many young men as possible. To that end, he and his wife Patricia established the Patricia M. and Victor F. Ganzi Merit Scholarship. As Bro. Thomas remarked at the event, “I know firsthand the number of young lives you both have changed for the better because of your generosity and passion for Catholic education.”
If the Chaminade community is truly a family, then Mrs. Jeanette "Jan" O’Sullivan is the tough but caring grandmother that greets every face that walks in. For nearly four decades, Jan has been the familiar, comforting face at the reception desk for every student and visitor. But more than just a face, she is the source of comfort for the student who forgot something or for the frantic parent picking up her son from the Nurse’s Office.
After her son Mark graduated from Chaminade in 1986, Jan became more involved in the Chaminade community. Her calming presence and humility - her tenderness and reassuring influencehave been hallmarks of Chaminade for the past 37 years. For the last several years, Jan’s husband Ed also worked at school, and together they continued to serve the Chaminade community with the grace that has become her trademark.
“It was a pleasure to meet all of the students and parents over the years,” said O’Sullivan. “I accept this award with tremendous gratitude. When I retire, I will look at this award and remember the great memories my husband Ed and I experienced at Chaminade.” Bro. Tom said, “I was able to tell them both that we had selected them to receive the Founders Award a few months before Ed grew more ill and then sadly passed. His spirit was very much present the night of the event!”
Gen. Pace’s story is one of honor and service, one that is familiar to the Chaminade Family. Before serving as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, an appointment held by the highest-ranking military officer of the U.S. armed forces, he began his career as a young marine 2nd
“Who you honor speaks to what you value.”
lieutenant deployed to Vietnam. In 1968, Gen. Pace would meet a Chaminade graduate he called “the single most influential military person” in his life.
Guido Farinaro ’67 chose not to go to college, even though nearly all of his classmates did. Lt. Pace and Lance Cpl. Farinaro met and served together in Vietnam. He was the first Marine to die under Pace’s leadership. Gen. Pace has vowed to live his own life in a way to honor Guido’s legacy.
Pace became the sixth Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in October of 2001, the first U.S. Marine to hold that position. In September of 2005, General Pace was appointed the 16th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, again the first Marine to hold the distinguished position. Upon retiring in October of 2007 after more than 40 years of service, he has remained active, holding leadership positions in several corporations in consulting, private equity, and information technology security, as well as holding advisory positions in organizations that assist and support troops and their families. He has visited Chaminade four times since 2007 and has been a steadfast supporter of our school.
His legacy of service to others is in the very spirit that Chaminade’s mission aims to foster. Gen. Pace and his wife Lynne established a $2 million scholarship in honor of Guido. His passing not only served to inspire and refocus Gen. Pace, but it ultimately would serve to connect him to Chaminade. Gen. Pace and his wife hope the Chaminade Men who receive the scholarship are just as inspired by Guido's character and sacrifice.
At the conclusion of the presentation of the awards, a congratulatory video from former President George W. Bush was played, offering his and Laura's best wishes not only to his former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs but to all the honorees that evening.
Legacy of Leadership serves to shine a light on some of the special people who make Chaminade unique in all areas of school life - athletics, academics, alumni, support staff, and more. The evening is a celebration of the selfless devotion of these individuals as well as a recognition of the way they model what it truly means to live the mission of Chaminade High School.

Chaminade High School has been named an Official Charity Partner for the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, November 5. For the first time, Chaminade High School will be among more than 550 official charity partners.
The NYRR Official Charity Partner Program offers an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to raise funds to support their missions and services. Runners representing Chaminade will be raising money
I am running the NYC marathon for multiple reasons: to raise funds to purchase additional AEDs, to implement vital training for coaches and faculty at Chaminade High School, and to honor the staff and teammates that sprung into action at a December basketball practice who saved my son’s life.
Running the NYC Marathon has always been something I wanted to do, and being able to raise money in conjunction with this goal for an institution that was integral in my formative high school years made it a no-brainer to partner with Chaminade and the Torch Fund.
I hope to enable future generations of young men to enjoy the same memories I have from the sports field and classroom during my time as a Flyer.
to support the annual Torch Fund, Chaminade’s program of annual giving, providing critical financial support to students and programs helping to keep Chaminade strong.
Our six runners this year represent alumni, board members, parents of alumni, and Chaminade staff. Check out their stories below on why they’re running for Chaminade and what being a part of this iconic event means to them.
Chaminade has played an integral role in shaping the person I am today. I owe a great deal of my personal and professional success to the teachers and coaches who helped me grow during my time there. I feel it is my responsibility to advance the mission of Chaminade by giving back as much as possible and encouraging others to support my efforts as I run my first marathon.
The skills and values learned at Chaminade have carried over into my private companies and everyday life. I am currently a proud member of the Chaminade staff. I have remained in contact with the Chaminade community since graduating and frequently attend alumni association events. I’m running to raise funds in support of the Torch Fund and pay it forward to the next generation of students. Go Flyers!
Chaminade has helped me earn my college degree, develop a great career, and become a better man. I want to pay it forward to the school that has had such a huge impact on my life. After suffering a torn achilles in 2022, the unofficial Flyer motto to “Be the Best” will be with me when I make my comeback at the NYC Marathon representing Chaminade!
Looking back at my four years at Chaminade, I have so many fond memories of the friendships and experiences that helped shape me into the person that I am today.
Just as a sailor leaves the safety of the dock to go on a journey, if we wanted to become Chaminade Men, we would have to step off the dock.
Forcing myself, with the help of my family, to commute every day from Southampton to Mineola, I found a home in the Chaminade community.
To support Chaminade High School and any of our runners at this year’s New York City Marathon, scan the QR code and make a donation!
Members of the 1930 Legacy Society make a planned gift to Chaminade High School to honor faculty, staff members, administrators or in gratitude for the support they received from the Flyer community.
Ed Smith '89 has a long legacy of commitment to the school, having served for over two decades in varying capacities, including the Alumni Board, the Torch Committee, and as the Varsity Hockey head coach. Ed and his wife Jessica (Sacred Heart Academy '89) made their pledged gift with the idea of providing support to future Flyers and securing a bright future for the school.
Ed said, “Chaminade has been a beacon of light on Long Island, specifically on the Catholic education landscape. I maintain a strong sense of pride in this school and recognize the critical importance of sustaining it.
Jessica added, “Our pledge to the 1930 Legacy Society is a reflection of our appreciation for the positive influence a Chaminade education has had on Ed and our two sons [EJ '13 and Ryan '17]. Equally important, it is a show of support for the continued evolution of Chaminade High School for future generations of Flyers.”
Ed will be celebrating his 35th reunion next year, and he encourages his classmates and the entire Chaminade Family to consider including the school in their charitable plans as a way of acknowledging the institution that has provided so much for so many. Gifts of all sizes work together to create opportunities for future generations of Flyers.
Mr. Christopher Lynch graduated from Chaminade in 1982 and returned to his alma mater 36 years ago to join the Chaminade faculty. Throughout his tenure at Chaminade, he has represented every aspect of the Chaminade Family as an alumnus, parent, member of CAPA, teacher, and coach. He has touched the lives of thousands of students.
In his remarks at the end of the school year, Principal Bro. Joseph Bellizzi, S.M. '78, explained Mr. Lynch’s renowned impact on the Chaminade Family:
I am not sure how to render a fitting tribute to such a man: the ultimate Chaminade Man. You not only teach how to be the Chaminade Man, you live it! I cannot express to you how grateful Chaminade is, how grateful I am, for the model you have offered to so many graduates and parents over these years. Perhaps I could quote a famous author, “I firmly believe that every person needs a role model. It’s someone who is special enough to look up to for guidance and to inspire us to help achieve our goals.” Well, that describes you perfectly. You have been the ideal model and mentor.
Whether in the classroom, on the field, or on retreat, Mr. Lynch has been such a witness to the importance of faith, family, and friends; what it means to be a good man of faith, a caring father, and a loving husband. So many have come to know him and have truly learned from him how to be a Chaminade Man, including his son Kyle '14.
After a successfully won battle with metastatic stomach cancer, Mr. Lynch wrote a book, Go Make a Difference. The back cover reads, “Stay positive. Trust the people who are helping you. Keep the faith. Live life and spread joy.” Those who know Mr. Lynch know that he has borne witness to this in his talks and, more so, in his life.
Mr. Lynch has also been a true role model to his colleagues of what it means to be a lay collaborator of the Marianist mission of education. Chaminade High School has grown for having him involved. As a result, students and athletes have come to a great appreciation of what it means to be a true son of Mary. Well done, good and faithful servant. May our Blessed Mother continue to be with you and watch over you!
The weather was not entirely cooperative at the onset of this year’s Golf and Tennis Open, as ominous clouds forced the evening cocktail hour indoors. Fortunately, the skies cleared, allowing for the dinner and what proved to be a lively auction to be held under the tent at the Nassau Country Club. Over 600 guests participated in the day’s various activities held at the usual five golf courses: Mill River, Nassau, Brookville, Meadowbrook, and Wheatley Hills. Guests included Chaminade alumni, parents, CAPA members, and friends. New this year was the addition of Mr. Ed Smith ’89 as executive chairman of the event. With the cost of living on Long Island at an all time high, Ed has been tasked with spearheading the fundraising efforts for Chaminade’s marquee event. “The annual open is our largest event of the year in support of the Torch Fund," said Bro. Tom. “I knew that Ed’s experience with our annual appeal and finance committee would serve well in bringing the outing to the next level. He joins an incredibly seasoned team - Bill Basel and Kevin Parente - that has mastered organizing and coordinating the logistics of one of the largest opens on Long Island. I look forward to seeing the event grow in the coming years, ensuring that we keep a Chaminade education affordable.”
The success of this year’s event was in no small part due to live and silent auctions. Tony Spera '85, Rob Sica '99, and Dave Gildea '93 all served as live auctioneers. Most would agree, however, that the highlight of this event was the active participation of General Peter Pace, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Not only did he donate his own 2000 Corvette, but he also volunteered to sponsor two dinners at the Columbus Citizens Foundation, one of which was a spur-of-the-moment decision. The Corvette sold at $26,000 to Kevin Fee '67, a classmate of Guido Farinaro, who served under Gen. Pace in Vietnam. The dinners were purchased at $20,000 each by Kevin Fee '67 and Greg Burke P '16, '18. The General received a spontaneous standing ovation along with the patriotic chant of “USA” in recognition of all he has done for his country and for Chaminade.
Four additional dinners at Meribah were also auctioned at $24,000 each to Dick Kearns '68, Kevin Fee '67, Tom Deierlein, and Greg Burke P '16, '18. A total of 11 items were sold at the live auction, with an additional 81 at the silent auction. This number proved to be the highest number of donations to date for the Golf and Tennis Open. "I am proud to announce that the day netted close to $1 million in support of the Torch Fund and Chaminade's mission," said Ed Smith. "I look foward to continuing my work with Bill and Kevin in growing this great event."
Congratulations to this year’s winners!
